Alleged serial shoplifter caught at ShopRite: Lyndhurst PD
By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com
ANorth Arlington woman who loss-prevention officials at the Lyndhurst ShopRite had suspected was shoplifting from the store for several Saturdays, was finally nabbed after she allegedly tried to shoplift again this past Saturday, Det. Lt. Vincent Auteri, the Lyndhurst Police Department’s public-information officer said.
According to Auteri:
At approximately 8:22 am, Saturday, Aug. 28, ShopRite loss prevention contacted the LPD to report they had determined a woman, described only as a slim, older female, with a brown and a dark colored backpack, later iden
tified as Juana Rivera, 54, of North Arlington, may have been shoplifting over each of the previous few Saturday mornings.
Concerned the woman could return, ShopRite loss prevention focused their attention on any patron who matched the description of Rivera.
Sure enough, when Rivera

entered the store, loss prevention determined she was their suspect and immediately contacted the LPD.
Officers Mark Rivera (no relation) and Nicolette Villani responded and assisted a member of ShopRite loss prevention in monitoring Rivera’s movement around the store, filling her shopping cart in the process.
When she reached the self-checkout, she would scan some of her items while bypassing the payment scanner with most of the others.
This technique is known as the “pass around.”
She reportedly purchased $92 worth of groceries and other assorted items before attempting to leave without paying for $201 worth of items. As she attempted to leave the store, Rivera was stopped by the loss-prevention officer and placed under arrest without incident by Officers Rivera and Villani.
Rivera was charged with shoplifting and released on a complaint summons.
Charges for the previous shopliftings are pending while they are investigated.
