“Age-related macular degeneration” (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness among Americans over the age of 60. This disease manifests itself in two forms. The “wet” type affects only about 10%-15% of those affected by the disease, but is responsible for approximately 90% of all cases of severe vision loss related to AMD. While there are treatments for this neovascular form of AMD, which is characterized by the formation of abnormal blood vessels in the retina that leak fluid that damages the macula, researchers are looking for ways to prevent the disease. Accordingly, recent research reveals that a fat-rich diet can lead to low-grade inflammation that promotes wet AMD. This finding may lead to new ways to avert AMD.

There is no cure for AMD, but prescription eyewear can sometimes improve vision. Remember, early detection is the most important factor in determining if you can be treated effectively. Proper eye care and evaluations can help prevent vision loss. Comprehensive eye exams can also detect diabetes, retinal holes or tears, and other important treatable medical conditions. To schedule an exam, please call 201-896-0096 to schedule an appointment, or visit us at 20 Park Avenue, Lyndhurst. Our optical shop can be reached at 201-896-0007. P.S. Symptoms of the wet form of AMD, which include visual distortions and reduced central vision in one or both eyes, usually appear suddenly and worsen quickly.
