O

n behalf of the HEROES Model Research Institute and Re:LIFE Incorporated, I am excited to invite you to the Grove School of Engineering of the City College of New York for the inaugural HEROES Model Conference. HEROES represents heritage, education, relationships, opportunities, entrepreneurship and service. These are six crucial areas necessary for children and youth development to be effective. Our theme this year is “Culturally Relevant Pedagogy: Tools to engage and empower children and youth innovatively. As educators and youth service providers, we are passionate about what we do – inspiring and shaping the lives of children and youth. However, there are many challenges that accompany this passion. Many times we experience difficulties engaging our students because we fail to inspire them. While other times we lose inspiration, stifle their creative minds, or lack newer ways to rekindle their interest in learning. As educators or service providers, it is imperative that we constantly seek out innovative ways to keep ourselves, our children and our youth engaged in this ever-changing global economy. It is our responsibility to ensure that we adopt a more comprehensive and holistic approach to augmenting children and youth development. This is our 21st century challenge. This is the essence of the burning desire to inspire and empower. The 2014 HEROES Model conference is an opportunity to reinvent, revitalize and re-brand your passion to empower children and youth. This conference will provide a learning space to garner innovative tools, techniques, services, products and knowledge for anyone with a desire to enhance their craft. We will have discussions and presentations on a variety of topics: social justice, STEM, entrepreneurship, relationships, creating opportunities, conflict resolution and more. Honorable Adam Clayton Powell IV is our special guest speaker. Conference attendees will participate in activities and workshops that will help them build or enhance programs and services; address the multiple needs of a diverse student and youth population; improve the capacity and quality of programming; promote collaborations and partnerships within your communities. Participants will also receive practical information and strategies on implementing the HEROES Model, as well as, best practices that will positively impact development. There is also the opportunity to network with other programs and interact with experienced professionals. In addition, there will be two panel discussions; the social responsibility forum with young professionals, and the youth speak panel with current youth who will discuss what engages or disengages them in our current educational and service provision climate. Sounds fascinating, right? The positive engagement of the mind is the precursor to achieving excellence. Come join us to learn how to positively engage the minds of our youth at the Grove School of Engineering of the City College of New York on Monday, April 14th to Wednesday, April 16th. We need your voice added to this discussion around empowerment.

Sincerely,

Chike Ukaegbu Originator, The HEROES Model 2014 Conference Host
