INSIDE THE KENTUCKY DERBY & other American icons

Building trust & ADVANCING KENTUCKY

Thhroughout his 45 years in higher education, Eli Capilouto, president of the University of Kentucky, said he’s continually reminded of the transformative power of education.

“Time and time again, I’ve seen the trajectory of a family change after one of its members steps forward and gets a degree,” Capilouto

said. “And I know from data that, any way you look at it, the more education you have, the better your health outcomes, your economic outcomes and your quality of life.”

Each time someone invests in their education, it has a larger, compounding effect, he said, serving to “advance Kentucky.”

In UK’s quest to help Kentuck-

ians succeed, Capilouto said he sees a like-minded partner in KET.

“When I look at KET, it’s like I’m looking in the mirror at the University of Kentucky,” Capilouto said. “We both go after Kentucky’s most intractable problems, whether it be opioid misuse, heart disease, diabetes or Alzheimers. We both want to answer the big questions

and to give Kentuckians more opportunities to improve their wellbeing, both for their families and for their communities.”

KET, he added, serves as something akin to a “central nervous system” for the Commonwealth.

“KET branches out throughout all of Kentucky, and just like our nervous system has different sensory fibers, it listens to Kentucky and speaks to Kentucky with meaningful programming that reaches all age levels,” Capilouto said. “To have an entity like KET – one that’s reliable, objective and able to take the time to do a deeper review of serious subjects – it’s extraordinarily valuable.”

One of the reasons for KET’s impactful reach across the Commonwealth, he noted, is that it’s a trusted institution, one that continually meets the educational needs of Kentuckians at every stage of their lives.

Parents and caregivers trust KET

for its children’s programming, with its age-appropriate, educational content, to enlighten young learners, to give them an “early start” on their numbers and letters, and to help them prepare for kindergarten.

Others trust KET for its health and public affairs coverage, programs such as Kentucky Health and Kentucky Tonight, that offer objective reporting and a diversity of viewpoints.

“I’ve watched a lot of television news programs evolve to where they’re mostly driven by perspectives or ideologies, but not KET,” Capilouto said. “KET is truly nonpartisan. It gives everyone equal opportunity to share their views and to have those views challenged in a serious manner that I think reflects the questions in the minds of so many Kentuckians.”

And KET likewise offers a convenient way to stay informed about the work of the state legislature, allowing Kentuckians to hear what’s being said in committee meetings and on the Senate and House floors, he added.

“To have that kind of rich source of dependable and reliable coverage is invaluable,” Capilouto said.

“We live in an era in which, unfortunately, I think community trust is withering. So it’s important to have institutions like KET that serve the greater good, providing programming and services that connect Kentucky and strengthen communities. Those are the foundations upon which our longevity as a democracy depends.”

KET’s mission is to serve you and all Kentuckians. As Kentucky’s only statewide media, we have a responsibility to not only reach the many communities, both large and small, that constitute this great state, but to capture and share stories that help connect us all.

We do this in a variety of ways. We help preserve our history by telling the stories of our past, including biographies of Robert Penn Warren and Marion Miley as well as explorations of the brave women who served as midwives in Appalachia during the Great Depression, the nation’s first library built to serve an African-American community, and the beauty of our state capitol.

We give voice to those affected in times of tragedy and share stories of perseverance and triumph.

We take in-depth looks at health and other issues that are being combatted, exploring the causes and offering solutions.

And we take every opportunity to celebrate the people, places and events that make this place we call home special. This month, I invite you to go behind the scenes of the Run for the Roses with our new Inside the Kentucky Derby special. And we wrap up the latest season of Kentucky Life with looks at numerous local artists, a butterfly greenhouse, a 1700s mansion that was the home of the prominent Clay family, and more great stories!

What does it mean

be American? It’s a question that continues to be a source of inquiry for historians and documentarians alike. This month, KET explores the subject of America with an assortment of programs that examine our national symbols, our pastimes, our food and our folklore, serving as a gateway to America’s past and present.

Iconic America: Our Symbols & Stories with David Rubenstein

In this eight-episode documentary series, David Rubenstein explores America’s 400-year history through a close examination of our most iconic national symbols, including the Hollywood sign, Fenway Park, American cowboys, the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge and others.

Join host Chip Polston as he celebrates some of the Commonwealth’s most interesting people, places and pastimes. During May, Chip explores the life and works of renowned Kentucky author and activist bell hooks, who championed the experiences of Black and workingclass women; revisits Empress Chili in Alexandria, the restaurant that started the Cincinnati Chili craze in 1922; and discovers the work of Lexington-based artist Robert Morgan, who creates sculptures out of discarded family items.

This four-part romantic comedy reimagines Henry Fielding’s classic novel, giving a new twist to the tale of an illegitimate young man’s love for a beautiful heiress. Tom Jones is the handsome protagonist whose uncertain parentage makes his infatuation with the wealthy Sophia Western in 18th-century England all the more complicated, treacherous and, ultimately, delightful.

The Coronation of King Charles Highlights Special

KET Saturday, May 6 • 9/8 pm

Watch the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony, which will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and is projected to last about seven hours, will be available to watch live on KET on May 6 beginning at 2:30/1:30 am. Or tune-in for a 90-minute highlights program of the coronation later that evening, beginning at 9/8 pm on KET.

This breathtaking natural history series explores three iconic Scandinavian landscapes: the hauntingly beautiful coast, the magical seasonal forests, and the volcanic and arctic extremes. Enjoy a show-stopping performance from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater presenting a revue of milestone shows and songs from 1973 to 2023. Performed by a cast of veteran Broadway stars as well as a new generation of up-and-coming talents, the concert celebration is a living testament to why musical theater continues to resonate so powerfully.

NOVA: Your Brain

Fanny: The Right to Rock

Sometime in the 1960s, in sunny Sacramento, two Filipina-American sisters got together with other teenage girls to play music. Little did they know their garage band would evolve into the legendary rock group Fanny, the first all-women band to release an LP with a major record label. Despite releasing five albums and drawing critical raves, the band largely had been written off, that is until its bandmates reunited 50 years later with a new record deal.

The doctor is back in, begrudgingly

Everybody’s favorite phlegmatic physician is coming back with new episodes!

The public television syndicator announced that the final two seasons (seasons 9 and 10) of the popular British series Doc Martin will be available to American audiences this fall.

To prepare viewers for the doctor’s return, KET will re-air season 8 of Doc Martin this summer in anticipation of the arrival of season 9 in early fall.

Additionally, both seasons 8 and 9 of Doc Martin will be available for streaming with KET Passport in July, with season 10 becoming available for streaming in the fall.

Doc Martin was first introduced to KET audiences in 2008, and it became an immediate hit. The series stars Martin Clunes as Dr. Martin Ellingham, the brusque general practitioner for the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn.

Empowering teachers with technology

KET recently participated in the Kentucky Society for Technology in Education (KySTE) conference in Louisville, which seeks to aid educators with resources that enhance technology in the classroom. KET’s education team was on hand to consult with teachers, helping them incorporate KET and PBS resources into their lesson plans. And participants also had a chance to get their photo taken with mascots from some PBS KIDS programs, such as Zeke (above) from the new Work It Out Wombats! children’s series.

Pulaski County workshops encourage creative learning in homes

KET education consultants recently hosted a series of four workshops in Pulaski County to encourage families with children ages 3-8 to cultivate handson learning experiences in their homes. The workshops use creative play and exploration to introduce children to a variety of social and emotional learning skills, such as self-awareness, self-confidence, gratitude and empathy.

Students showcase technology skills at Rupp Arena

In April, thousands of students and educators descended upon Rupp Arena in Lexington for the Kentucky Department of Education’s 2023 Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship. The annual event, which gives students an opportunity to showcase their science and technology skills, was filmed by KET and is available for viewing on-demand at KET.org/STLP
