Keswickians Sieg and Goldstein are Making Movies Film Cast Includes Local Actress Schuyler Fisk

Hot Air? - Keswick residents and filmmakers Derek Sieg and Jeremy Goldstein finished shooting a new

film, Hot Air, over the summer in Austin, Texas. Their work earned the film a coveted slot in the Virginia Film Festival’s Spotlight on Virginia Filmmakers lineup - a centerpiece of the four day festival which begins November 6th. “It seems like each year we receive more films, and more impressive films, that highlight Virginia filmmaking, and by that I mean films that were either made in Virginia, or by filmmakers with distinct Virginia ties or roots,” said VFF Programmer Wesley Harris. “This year’s crop of Virginia films was exceptionally strong, and we are proud to be able to highlight their work.” Co-writers, Sieg and Goldstein’s Hot Air is the story of a deeply flawed, yet charismatic, aging lothario who fakes his death to escape jail time. At his own funeral, he meets the son he never knew he had. The film stars Jere Burns as Major (the father) and Matthew Gray Gubler as Lesley (the son). Also, the dramedy casts Keswick local Schuyler Fisk who plays the role of Summer in this exciting independent film involving few of our neighbors. Catch Hot Air at a special screening held during the festival here in Charlottesville and stay afterwards for a chat session about the film hosted by Sieg and Goldstein. To get an invitation to the free screening, contact Goldstein at jgoldstein@gmail.com. Patron of the arts types interested in getting involved, reach out in support of the film!

A new 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath home is appearing on Palmer Drive in Keswick. It’s a 2 story with 3,665 sf on the main level and 1,520 sf on the second level. There is also an 1,100 sf garage and a 1,930 sf basement. Speaking of Keswick Estate the two old tear down brick ranchers have now gone and the lots are graded and seeded.

COVER STORY STORY BY ELIZABETH BLYE DELANEY

The Member’s PHOTOGRAPH BY W. GORDON MERRICK

Course Fore for “Full Cry”

It was a beautiful fall morning for the opening of the new Pete Dye designed golf course named “Full Cry” at Keswick Hall. The day began with a breakfast, ribbon cutting ceremony and introductions by Bill Goodwin, the owner of Keswick Hall. Bill said he called Pete and told him he “bought a golf course and could he fix it up?” Goodwin said, “I gave Pete an unlimited budget and he exceeded it!” Thus began a short, light-hearted Q&A before the ribbon cutting. When Dye was asked what was his signature hole? He replied “eighteen.” When asked why, he replied, “no, all eighteen!” Pete and his wife Alice both former amateur champion golfers, decided to go into the design business in their mid thirties. Dye, who grew up in Urbanna, Ohio was from a golfing family. His father was in the insurance business but loved golf. Dye’s father built a nine hole course on land Pete’s grandmother owned that was part of what is now the Urbanna Country Club. Dye was influenced by Scottish course designer Donald Ross and studied Scottish and Irish courses. Over the years he has developed a sixth sense of how a golf course should lay. According to John Maginnes, former PGA Tour player, who has a talk radio show on SiriusXM called “Maginnes on Tap” about golf, “Dye courses are distinct.” Pete says he, “designs courses the pros hate and the members love. When you get that combination you know you have a good course.” Maginnes said, “he accomplishes those two goals with one design. Dye is known as a punishing designer and has been called ‘The Marquis de Sod’”. He messes with the players perceptions on the course. For example, he will put in too many bunkers, that are not all in play, to distract the player. He is known for his small greens and penal or pot bunkers. Meaning that if you get into a bunker, you may not get out! After close to 100 world class golf courses, Pete said he “has 12 more courses he is working on!” Did I mention that he will turn 89 on his next birthday?! ! He walks all of his courses with his crew communicating verbally his likes and dislikes. He said he never learned to draw. For the “Full Cry” course here at Keswick, Maginnes said, “he put a new course in where an old one was.” Maginnes visited during the construction four or five times. When he

saw it completed, he said, “it looked like it had been here forever [and] that’s a sign of great golf course design.” When asked if this course would put Keswick Hall on the golfing map, Maginnes replied “most definitely!” At the end of the ribbon cutting, we were all invited “to the first tee to witness something never seen in golf.” Those who had signed up for a round of golf were gathered at the tee while the rest of us watched. Then, out of the woods, came Tony Gammell, Huntsman for the Keswick Hunt Club and professional whipper-in Sommers Olinger, walking with their pack of hounds! A few rogue hounds ran through the tent where the breakfast was still laid out and snatched a couple of biscuits! He gathered them together on the first tee for a photo op then on to his morning walk. After all, the course is named “Full Cry”! That is a term used in fox hunting meaning the hounds are in full pursuit giving “tongue in chorus.” Hounds do not bark. They “open”, “give tongue”, or “speak”. Tony, who is responsible for the care, breeding and training of the hounds, walks his hounds daily with Sommers on the roads around the golf course, a total of 3-4 miles this time of year, and in the summer 8-10 miles. His pack of hounds is counted in couples. He has 30 couples or 60 hounds with him every day. It is quite a sight to see. For a moment you are back in the Irish countryside watching a sporting tradition that is very old. Tony, from County Limerick in Ireland, has been with the Keswick Hunt Club for 15 years. When I asked Tony what he observed about the difference between the old course and the new course, he said “it looks like a links course to me.” When asked what he meant, he replied “it’s undulating like the Irish golf courses along the sea.” Perhaps to Pete that is the influence so many years back of Donald Ross, the Scottish designer of over 400 courses in the United States, who died in 1948. With the new Pete Dye golf course now open at Keswick Hall, players are invited to pursue in “Full Cry”... as John Maginnes says, “the hardest game in the world!”

WHAT’S COOKING

Salt & Pepper Chicken Ingredients: Bone-in, skin-on chicken leg/thigh quarters Kosher salt Freshly ground pepper Directions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Let chicken air dry, out of the package, for about a half an hour, pat the skin if needed with a piece of paper towel to get the skin really dry. Sprinkle skin side of the chicken pieces heavily with good kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. Arrange on a rimmed baking sheet so that no chicken piece touches another piece - very important, the chicken cannot be touching! Bake on 425 degress for about 35 minutes on “convection” setting or 45 minutes on a “bake” setting. Don’t peek - keep the heat in! The skin will crisp up to golden brown with the proper amount of salt applied. Serve with the butternut squash risotto recipe below.

Add the garlic and sauté for 1 to 2 minutes, just until the garlic is fragrant and softens, avoid browning the garlic. Add the rice and allow to coat for 1 minute or so, begin to add the simmering stock 1/2 a cup at a time, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Wait until each addition of stock is almost absorbed before adding the next 1/2 cup. Reserve some stock (1/4 cup) to add at the end of the desired cooking tenderness. After approximately 30 minutes or when the rice is tender but not soft, add the reserved broth, sage, butternut squash and the parmesan cheese. Season with some great Maldon salt and freshly ground pepper and serve immediately to a kitchen full of friends!

KESWICK SCENE 12th Annual Keswick Hunt Club Puppy Show T he Keswick Hunt Club welcomed all to the 12th Annual Keswick Puppy (who was also the prime organizer for the entire event) and her team of volShow on Saturday, October 11th; it was a great success! The cute factor was in full force during the Junior Handler Class with a great group of both kids and hounds. While our Judges, Hugh Motley and Jake Carle, evaluated the puppies, the spectators were enjoying the Pimm’s Cup served by Rohn and Connie Laudenschlager and perusing the more than 70 Silent Auction items gathered and organized by Winkie Motley and Susan Rives. Many thanks to our members who donated all the wonderful auction items and even more thanks to everyone who so generously purchased them! The hunt club was beautifully decorated and the younger set had fun activities and goodie bags to enjoy, all due to the hard work of Whitney Gammell

unteers. The evening was capped off by the Adopt-a-Puppy live auction. Clearly, the puppy show wouldn’t happen without our wonderful hounds, so we must thank Tony Gammell, Sommers Olinger and Mike Poindexter for all they do each and every day, plus all their hard work for this event to set up the hunt club, teach and assist our junior handlers and have all the hounds ready to show.

ON SCREEN Virginia Film Festival - Stellar Lineup of Films, Events and Special Guests The Virginia Film Festival, presented by the University of Virginia, returns to Charlottesville, November 6-9, with more than 100 films and a stellar lineup of special guests including Hal Holbrook, Jenna Elfman, Barry Levinson, Frank Langella, Richard Roundtree, Katie Couric, Patrick Wilson, and Jasmine Guy. Here is a preview to a wideranging program which includes top global festival circuit titles Wild, Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, and Mr. Turner – plus dynamic new discoveries, powerful documentaries and timeless classics, check www.virginiafilmfestival.org for complete listings:

Opening Night Film: Big Stone Gap Kick off on Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. with the World Premiere of Big Stone Gap, filmed on location in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and based on the popular series of books by noted author and Big Stone Gap native Adriana Trigiani. The film stars Ashley Judd as the small town’s self-appointed middle-age spinster who keeps countless secrets before discovering one of her own that will change her life forever. The Festival is excited to welcome Big Stone Gap screenwriter and director, bestselling author Adriana Trigiani, along with cast members Patrick Wilson, Jenna Elfman, and Jasmine Guy. “We are thrilled to be able to share this world premiere of a film that was made in Virginia,” Kielbasa said, “by Big Stone Gap native Adriana Trigiani, and a film that so wonderfully celebrates the Commonwealth’s unique spirit and natural beauty. It all combines to make this a perfect choice for our opening night, and we are looking forward to a truly special evening.”

Centerpiece Film: 5 to 7 The Festival’s primetime Saturday evening slot has long been home to exciting new films, and the tradition continues this year with 5 to 7, the tale of a “cinq-a-sept” romance, and love’s power to conquer even the most insurmountable of obstacles. The film will be followed by a discussion with special guest Frank Langella, who will be joined by the film’s director Victor Levin along with U.Va. grad Julie Lynn and her Mockingbird Pictures partner Bonnie Curtis, producers of the film.

Closing Night Film: Dead Poets Society Get a behind-the-scenes look at an iconic film of the last quarter century as it celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Dead Poets Society. The screening will be followed by a discussion with its producer, U.Va. alum Paul Junger Witt, and its screenwriter Tom Schulman, who won an Academy Award for the film. The film has won over generations of fans since premiering in 1989, and has further increased in popularity recently due to the tragic loss of Robin Williams, (Academy Award nominee for his performance in the film).

Spotlight Screenings: Buzzard – Director Joel Potrykus will present his

dark comedy about a horror metal slacker who flees a dead-end temp job to hide out in a friend’s basement, armed with a pile of pilfered bogus checks and a nasty temper.

Shaft – Part of a larger tribute to the famed photographer and film director Gordon Parks, this special screening of the film that introduced true cool to the 70’s will be followed by a discussion with its star, Richard Roundtree. Wild – Reese Witherspoon is earning significant

Oscar buzz for her performance as author Cheryl

Dumb and Dumber To – Jeff Daniels and Jim Strayed, who sets out on a grueling thousand-plus-

Carrey are back…and dumber than ever…in this sequel that picks up twenty years from the time we first met their dimwitted duo, and the boys are on a quest to find their long lost children in hopes of finding a kidney.

Fishing Without Nets – This affecting film from director Cutter Hodierne won Best Director honors at Sundance this year and tells the story of a young Somali pirate from the perspective of the pirates themselves.

Foxcatcher – This powerful psychological drama tells the true story of John duPont, chillingly played by Steve Carell, a deeply troubled man who lures Olympic hopeful wrestler Dave Schultz (Channing Tatum) to live and train with him. It was a move that would have tragic repercussions. Hellion – Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul stars in this disturbing, powerful and authentic story about a fractured family’s response to a 13-year-old boy’s spiraling out of control. The film, directed by Kat Candler, was one of the most talked-about films at Sundance this year.

The Imitation Game – Benedict Cumberbatch

is earning significant Oscar talk as mathematician Alan Turing whose status as a war hero, earned by leading a team that cracked the German Enigma Code and shortened World War II, is destroyed by revelations about his personal lifestyle and the unenlightened reactions of his countrymen.

Low Down –Directed by Jeff Preiss, the film

looks at the life of celebrated jazz pianist Joe Albany through the eyes of his young daughter Amy Jo Albany, who wrote the memoir recounting his battle with a drug addiction in the 1970’s and 80’s on which the film is based.

Mommy – Canadian director Xavier Dolan’s

emotionally-charged story of a widowed single mom trying to manage her explosive 15-year-old ADHD son and a neighbor whose unexpected support adds an unexpected sense of stability, and ultimately, hope, to their lives. The film shared the 2014 Jury Prize at Cannes with Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language.

Mr. Turner – Filmmaker Mike Leigh turns his un-

blinking and improvisational focus to the last 25 years of eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner, whose complicated life and relationships make him at once loved and reviled by the art world, the public, and royalty.

mile hike along the Pacific Trail in an attempt to heal herself from the loss of her mother, a divorce, and years of self-destructive behavior.

Special Guests: Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight!, the VFF welcomes one of America’s most treasured actors, Hal Holbrook, who will give a live theatrical performance of his signature one-man-show Mark Twain Tonight! at The Paramount Theater on Friday evening. Then, on Saturday afternoon, the 89-year-old actor will join director Scott Teems to present the acclaimed documentary Holbrook/ Twain: An American Odyssey. Holbrook first played Mark Twain as part of an honors project at Denison University after World War II. Today it is perhaps the longest-running show in theatre history. This year marks his 60th consecutive year performing Mark Twain Tonight!, for which he won a Tony Award. In 2014, Holbrook will give his 2,298th performance in the role, and continues to change the show, mining over 20 hours of material to fit the times. Barry Levinson – The Natural and The Humbling Barry Levinson, one of the most popular

directors of the modern movie era thanks to hit films including Diner, Rain Man, Bugsy, Good Morning Vietnam, and others, will come to the Festival for the first time to present a 25th Anniversary screening of The Natural on Sunday at The Paramount Theater. In addition, Levinson will offer a sneak peek at his latest directorial effort, The Humbling, which stars Al Pacino.

Katie Couric – Fed Up, University of Virginia grad Katie Couric returns to her alma mater to present and discuss this powerful documentary on America’s runaway childhood obesity epidemic. Couric narrates the film, which she co-executive produced with Laurie David (An Inconvenient Truth). Fed Up features interviews with food and nutrition experts and heartbreaking first-person interviews with children on its way to taking on the powerful “Big Sugar” lobby and questioning many of the basic “truths” we have been told about food and nutrition for the past 30 years.

HORSIN’ AROUND Keswick Horses Winning Indoors and Outdoors

It was a night of ‘old tradition’ at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show as 19 Hunt Clubs, including hounds, huntsmen, and horses, took over the main arena at the Farm Show Complex for Hunt Night, sponsored by Kinsley Construction (pictured above). The competition was steep in the Field Hunters Competitions, in which each horse and rider competed over a course of eight natural-type obstacles. In the Field Hunter 35 & Under class, 34 competitors representing various hunt clubs took part, and it was two members from the Keswick Hunt that took the top placings. For the second consecutive year Jill Wilson and APPLE clinched first place and the Max C. Hempt Perpetual Trophy, while Jordan Sipes and EN VOGUE took second. “It’s great. I’ve been coming up here for a few years and done well, but it’s fun every time,” said Wilson. “Keswick Hunt is fun, it’s good country and good hounds! Wilson and APPLE had a very successful night, and claimed victory in the Ladies Hunter Under Saddle competition in a class of 36 riders, winning the Betty Baldwin Meister Memorial Perpetual Trophy. Wilson was also presented with the ‘Polly’ Gingrich Caswell Perpetual Trophy for winning the prestigious Leading Lady Rider Award, which she has now won six consecutive times. This is my sixth year being Leading Lady Rider, and second year on this horse. It feels awesome! Hopefully next year I’ll be in the professional division, so this may be retirement.” The exciting Hunt Team class is always a favorite for both the riders and spectators. Teams of three horses and riders jump around the course in single file at a ‘safe hunting distance’ until the last obstacle, which they jump over side by side. Some teams were better than others, but all received loud cheers and whistles from team members and fans in the stands. For the first time in 19 years, the Radnor Hunt took the title and the Potomac Hunt Challenge Trophy, beating 18 other teams for the prominent award after a super round in unison.

Kelley Farmer took the top spot. Farmer broke her collarbone in a fall on August 3 and had surgery on August 11, and she came back to the show ring two weeks ago in Kentucky. She wanted to make sure she had a show in hand before coming to Capital Challenge. “I was a little bit ahead of schedule coming back to riding,” she admitted. “I was going a little stir crazy being on the ground. But I’m happy to be back.” Kelley Farmer and Scripted took the Grand Hunter Championship title, while Hunt Tosh entered the winner’s circle with Douglas Wheeler’s Gotham in the $25,000 Future Hunter North American Championship. The High Performance Hunter championship went to

Queen Lattifa, owned by Douglas and Kenneth Wheeler and ridden by Hunt Tosh. Tosh and Queen Lattifa received two firsts and two thirds over fences and third under saddle. Since their championship at Capital Challenge last year in the Second Year Green Hunters and a run of tricolors at indoors, Tosh said that Queen Lattifa has shown sparingly. She won the handy hunter class at the Devon Horse Show and competed a handful of times this summer, all in preparation for this year’s indoor circuit. Tosh gave credit to his owners, Douglas and Kenneth Wheeler Jr., for purchasing young horses and having the patience to let him bring them along to the top levels. “They enjoy having young ones and watching them come along,” he said. “The Wheeler family is awesome to have young horses, support me, and believe in them, and wait for them to turn into superstars. It’s nice that they’re so patient to see them come along and what they’ll turn into.”

Janet Pendegrast finished third in the Virginia Field

Hunter Championships in Middleburg, Virginia on October 4, 2014. Pendegrast rode hard against fierce competition from Foxhunters all over the country. Janet is pictured below, photo by Liz Callar Photography.

The Hunt Night Championship closed the evening, with the Keswick Hunt claiming the bragging rights to the Ralph A. Alfano Memorial Perpetual Trophy, while Mr. Stewart’s Cheshire Foxhounds were runners-up.

Indoors, the horse shows finishing out the 2014 season

saw Keswick horses champions (second photo). At the Capital Challenge Horse Show, the top six hunter riders in the country went head to head over three rounds, and

yourself immersed in the sport. Of course it doesn’t hurt that I adore traveling to England and Ireland, but even if I had never been to these countries, Barclay’s vivid and rich descriptions would strike a chord with me. Barclay goes to great lengths to explain the terminology in a very natural way. The title itself comes from the practice of having a change of horses after a few hours into the hunt. There is a pre-arranged location where everyone meets for this exchange and then the hunt continues. This is just one of the interesting tidbits offered up in this lovely book. a book filled with historical perspective and personal anecdotes. See You at Second Horses is an entrancing look at the glorious and elegant world of foxhunting.

In 1999 Barclay had a chance to tour England and Ireland, experiencing the best of foxhunting in those countries. Each day is a different venue and different horses provide interesting challenges for the rider. While I grew up on a horse farm , I was never the foxhunter in the family…I left that to my older sister. I was more of the stall mucker and tail braider, yet I love this book because, whether you have experienced a fox hunt or not you will find

dor of a sport with such an illustrious past. Jumping fences sometimes twelve abreast, these riders face exhilarating obstacles as they join the Quorn, Cottesmore and Fernie Hunts, just to name a few. Sprinkled within all of Barclay’s hunting adventures are beautiful photos of the sport by Trevor Meeks and others. They will truly transport you and make you wish you had been along for the ride. Is anyone up for a cup of whiskey, tea and soft boiled eggs after a long strenuous day of hunting? I’m in! It will make you want to join the hunt as well!

OPINION Responsibility - Share It BY MARY MORONY

Responsibility, if we didn’t learn anything but this simple concept from the tragic deaths of Morgan Harrington and Hannah Graham, those deaths wouldn’t quite be so in vain. We can’t turn back the hands of time, or do what could have been done, but we can move forward with a resolve to do better by our selves, our friends, our children, and our community. Both girls were separated from their friends. How they were separated, in either case, is not so much the issue, as that they were separated. In nature, the predator’s next meal is, first, separated from the herd. Human predators are no different. When out partying, make it your responsibility to stay with a pack. Relearn the responsibility of friendship. Somehow we have gotten away from the notion—not how we roll these days. Nobody wants to get up in other people’s business. If you alienate a friend because you cared enough to question their judgment, you have given yourself the opportunity to enhance a relationship in the future, furthermore, what you will gain in respect trumps any perceived loss.

As grim as it is, the facts are, you take your life in your hands when you insist on being a rugged individualist. Give your friends a break, when they suggest that maybe you shouldn’t have that next drink, hit, or whatever reality altering choice you are making, don’t fight back. What they are saying is, I care. I care enough about you to risk your censure and I care enough about myself not to let that

stop me from saying what needs to be said. If you can’t be responsible or don’t choose to be, make sure somebody has agreed to be on your behalf. We don’t live in a vacuum. Yes, it’s your life, but what you do with it has an effect on other people. That should be patently obvious, just now, nonetheless, it bears repeating. Like the designated driver, appoint a designated minder. Have one person swear off getting wasted for a night, so that they can make sure that everyone is present and accounted for. Yeah, I agree is sounds awful, who wants that job? As dull as it sounds, it is hands down better than wishing you had done something after some truly heinous event occurs. As much as we want to believe it can’t happen to me, we are fooling ourselves. It can and it has and will continue as long as that attitude prevails. If you are out and see someone in trouble, reach out. You don’t have to make friends, become pen pals; you can simply ask if they need help? If the reply is “no,” but your gut tells you otherwise, call 911, let the authorities deal with it. The police would much rather go out on a thousand calls of this nature than do what they have been doing recently. It is your responsibility as citizen not to shrug and walk off. If each of us took a little more responsibility for what goes on in our world we might well turn it into a better one. What a wonderful legacy to give Morgan and Hannah!

Clive Pates describes himself as a gesturalist: representing his subject with brush and knife work, sculpturally describing the space created between the artist, the landscape and the picture surface. Adamantly unsentimental about the subjects for his paintings, he prefers to be described as an “abstract painter with an ongoing fling for realism.” Virginia Pates digs, invents and uses an ever-changing palette of clays to create her loose, thin and

TRAVEL JOURNAL “...where a man feels at home, outside of where he’s born, is where he’s meant to go...” Ernest Hemingway, Green Hills of Africa BY DONALD J. SKELLY

As a child I was filled with magical stories of Africa, from my lovely godmother, who was raised in the highlands of Kenya, to my Aunt and Uncle who lived in Burundi, and countless other figures filled my mind with enchanting images of a strange land filled with exotic game and historic tribes. So when my buddy Lee Baskerville mentioned that he was trying to get together a group to go to South Africa and hunt and ride in a horse race, my interest was piqued. In addition to being a highly regarded portrait artist, Lee spent a great deal of time in Africa as a child, being the son of Henry Baskerville, proprietor of Safaris Unlimited. In his youth he had befriended Theo Erasmus, now co-owner of Sandymount Park. The 64,000 acre Sandymount, in addition to offering incomparable hunting to sportsmen (and women) from around the world, plays host to the Fauresmith 200. The Fauresmith 200 is the premiere Endurance Horse Race in Southern Africa. Nearly 500 of the most competitive endurance riders from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana race over 200 kilometers of rugged countryside in 3 days.

Our next 5 days were filled with adventures. Matt Zacherle, Brooks Honeycutt and myself took avail of the tremendous hunting offered at Sandymount. Leon Fourie and Theo Erasmus, the co-owners of Sandymount, embody the ethos that properly managed hunting has a positive impact on the environment. The more than 37,000 acres at Sandymount, were until the team acquired them, actively ranched and home to few game animals. But now, as a hunting preserve, and thanks to Sandymount’s disciplined conservation and breeding program, they are home to thousands of game animals as well as non-game species such as Giraffe, Weaver Birds, and African Porcupine. The Sandymount model demonstrates that hunting has the potential to restore hundreds of thousand of acres of natural habitat.

Soon Lee had a group of seven foxhunters, along with two spouses committed to making the 8,500 mile trip for the race. Who were these brave and/or crazy souls? Mary Millhiser, Pam Ault, Cheryl Lang, Elaine Honeycutt, Lee Baskerville, Katie Zacherle, and myself.

Hunting is carefully managed at Sandymount. Each of us had to demonstrate our marksmanship at the range before being allowed to hunt. And we were all fortunate enough to enjoy success, hunting under the guidance of Professional Hunter Vella Van Niekerk Brink. In addition to being great company, Vella put me within 300 yards of a very nice Blesbok. While I thought about how far that seemed, Vella reminded me that the day before I’d hit a 3” spinner target from 330 yards at the range. His reassurance was just what I needed and within minutes I was posing for pictures with my first African trophy, living out an adventure I’d dreamed about for more than 25 years.

We all arrived at Sandymount in late June. Our accommodations in the main lodge were luxurious and most comfortable. After cocktails by the pool, absorbing the vastness of the landscape, we set out on a game drive. It is hard to accurately convey the variety and number of animals we saw, Lechwe, Waterbok, Cape Buffalo, Zebra, Blesbok, Kudu and Impala just on that initial game drive of perhaps an hour!

A few days later the Sandymount team took us out on an extended ride on the horses. The ride terminated at an old Boer homesite from the 19th Century. It was a lovely spot with huge old trees overlooking a vast lush valley. They’d created a lavish campsite for us complete with a working bathroom and tents with cots. The highlight was the fully set formal dining table under the tree,... continued on the next page >>

and upon this table was set a fabulous meal prepared by our talented chef, Anneke Louw. It is moments such as these that one fully understands the timeless draw of Africa. The next morning after a great hunt for Springbok guided by the talented Josephus Fourie, we set off on horseback headed for the lodge. As we came to the top of one of the “koppies” or hills, our guide pointed to our right and there were three Giraffes. They were magnificent and not at all scared by us. Our guide explained it was a bull and his two females. After several minutes they grew bored and ambled off leaving the four speechless Americans standing there. As race day approached the increased activity in the small town of Fauresmith was palpable. Along with the 500 or so riders came a small army of support crew. Guiding and leading us in our efforts was Rykie Fourie, herself a greatly accomplished endurance rider. She ensured that we drove the course in advance of the race and familiarized us with the etiquette, rules, and strategies of endurance racing. She had secured horses for each of us to ride in the race, and along with her fellow endurance rider Diana Hoffman, took point on organizing the ‘Team USA’ team, getting us registered, ensuring that we’d have grooms and other waiting for us at every vet check along the way, and generally trying to ensure that we’d be equipped to succeed. Riders had come in for the race from Namibia, Czechoslovakia, Lesotho, the U.K. and of course the U.S.A. Riders who had ridden the race in years past informed us that to finish is an honor as fewer than half of riders finish the race. Most riders are pulled when their horses fail the rigorous vet checks that take place every 25 km which ensure that horses are not injured during the race. Team USA fared slightly less well. However two of our seven riders, finished the race. A real honor for Pam Ault and Katie Zacherle! The other riders were pulled when their horses failed to pass the vigorous mid-race vet checks. Alas, my journey ended when I was thrown from my mounts on day one and suffered a concussion. I was fortunate that South Africa is blessed with excellent medical facilities which nursed me back to health.
