A Red C poll shows that 73% of those polled are in agreement with the statement “same sex marriage should be allowed in the Constitution”. The poll was presented to the Oireachtas in February in a report prepared for the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform on the Kerry LGBT & Friends Calendar 2012 last Constitutional referendum. In December the first Ciarrai Amach Kieran Rose, Chair of GLEN (Gay & Lesbian Equality Network) said “the poll confirms the openness of Irish people and their support for further progress. “A Constitutional Convention is being proposed which will provide opportunity to build on the progress of Civil Partnership & provide constitutional protection for our relationships including lesbian and gay headed families” said Kieran. Civil Partnership has been very widely welcomed in Ireland, with 500+ couples entering civil partnerships since April 2011, when civil partnership first became available in Ireland. 

Same Sex Civil Partnership Venues in Kerry

Ciarrai Amach launched a pilot project in 2011 providing support to LGBT people. The project called the Phoenix Group is based in Killarney, is now set to run for the foreseeable future. The group meet at the Killarney Cultural Centre in East Avenue Road on the fourth Friday of every month between 7.30pm and 9pm, beginning with tea or coffee and a chat, before the meeting officially starts at 8pm. The group is friendly, open, non-judgemental and respects the right to individual anonymity. Two experienced LGBT people from the Carrai Amach project facilitate the monthly get-together. Since the group started people have been able to share their experiences in a safe, relaxed and confidential environment. Contact Ciarrai Amach 086 078 8260 for further information.
