Positive and Negative Space POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SPACE rely on each other when it comes to design. Positive space is where the actual object or subject is while negative space is the area in which lies around the positive space. For example, between the Recreational Center is a little courtyard and a covered picnic area. The two buildings on both the left and right side and the covered picnic area are the positive spaces and the grass areas between all of them are the negative space. Outside the Recreational Center
