ADAPTIVE SNOWBOARD EQUIPMENT THAT PROVIDES FREEDOM AND STABILITY TO THOSE WHO NEED IT.

Snowboarding is a winter sport that is loved by many, but not accessible by all. This adaptive snowboard trainer shrinks that gap by allowing people with physical disabilities such as incomplete paraplegia, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy to learn to snowboard comfortably and safely. To ensure the optimal design was reached, this adaptive snowboard trainer was put through extensive user testing with users who have varying levels of physical disabilities. The rigorous testing phase and ‘problems assessed and addressed’ phase yielded a final model appropriate to the allowed time frame and available resources. This working model, constructed with carbon fibre and aluminum, attaches to standard drilled snowboard mounts. The user uses the poles to compensate for reduced leg control, and may choose to add a rear leg brace to further enhance control and stability.

CHARGE YOUR DEVICES USING KINETIC ENERGY EVEN WHILE TOURING THE MOST REMOTE LOCATIONS.

The Kävellä Hip Pack gives backpackers and hikers the freedom to charge their most important hand held devices wherever they go. It is a portable alternative energy device that converts the user’s movement into electricity. It also provides convenient storage for the product being charged. This working model is the culmination of a three month comprehensive design study based on an in depth design methodology. Students were required to conduct thorough research on an assigned topic, in this case it was portable alternative energy. Once a problem was identified, concepts were produced and the chosen concept was refined. This specific project focused on getting power to wilderness hikers and backpackers. Once the two dimensional conceptualization was completed it was time to produce preliminary mock ups to answer specific questions. The questions focused on both the functional and esthetic qualities of the product, such as how big the charging device should be, where the pouch would sit on the user, and how to keep the appearance minimal. Finally, general arrangement drawings were produced to assist the production of the final model. Complete project time: 3 Months

INTERACTIVE MUSIC FUNGI - FUN FOR USERS, AND PROMOTES HEALTHY TREE GROWTH.

Fungi outdoor speakers can be installed in parks and high-traffic forested areas. Powered by solar panels, these mushrooms use bluetooth technology to connect to portable music players and bring the user’s music out to the open. While the users are sharing their musical interests, the sound frequencies are stimulating healthy plant growth in the surrounding foliage. Not only is this project beneficial for nature, it also promotes a sense of community and encourages people to spend time in parks and share their love for music. This was a group project where students were instructed to conduct ethnographic research and use the findings to create a product for the ‘urban forest’.

Complete project time: 6 Weeks

Vivace is a fruit feeder designed with both the avian and human user in mind. Cedar Waxwings have become more prevalent in backyards containing fruit bearing trees. Vivace’s simple, clean design allows bird lovers to easily attract these beautiful birds into their yard with fresh vibrant fruit year round. The fruit can be easily replaced and the feeder can be removed and cleaned with soap and water. For this project students were required to study a selected bird and create a house or feeder that would be easy to maintain and use by both the human and bird.

Complete project time: 6 Weeks

THE USE CYCLE OF A BIRD FRUIT FEEDER SHOULD BE ENJOYABLE FOR BOTH AVIAN AND HUMAN USERS.

A CHILD’S CREATIVITY IS BEAUTIFUL AND UNTAMED; THE TOUCAM LETS THEM CAPTURE THEIR WILDEST DREAMS.

Toucam is a camera for children that has a friendly cartoon bird appearance. It comes with a USB ‘nest’ that makes uploading photos easy and fun. Extensive end user testing was performed throughout the design process to ensure ease of use and a proper ergonomic fit. For this project students were required to design an electronic device for a specific market using metaphoric design. Modeling clay was used for the final model.

Complete project time: 6 Weeks

Goo is an electronic toy company who caters to the 5 - 12 year old segment. Orb-e is part of their web camera family that works with their educational games. The goal of this project was to successfully create a corporate identity and product package for an electronic product directed at a specific age segment. Requirements included a logo, letter head and business card, a flat illustration of the product box with die-lines, and a card stock model of the box.

Complete project time: 2 Months

FUN PACKAGING AND CORPORATE IDENTITY FOR CHILDRENS EDUCATIONAL COMPUTER TOYS.

THE JACKALOPE LUCKY FOOT - MAKING LONG DISTANCE RUNS COMFORTABLE AND FASHIONABLE. Jackalope is a brand that draws inspiration from the speedy rabbit from the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare, and also the perseverance and tenacity of the Pronghorn Antelope: a land-mammal whose speed is second only the Cheetah, but can maintain that speed for much greater distances. The shoes that jackalope makes are for an equally mysterious and rare breed of human: the dedicated runner. The purpose of this project was to collaborate with fellow designers and create a family of shoes for a specific activity.

Complete project time: 1 Month

WHO KNEW BUILDING LEGO PIECES IN SOLIDWORKS COULD BE SO ENTERTAINING!

LEGO can provide hours of fun and really gets the creative juices flowing, even when building it in Solidworks! The purpose of this assignment was to create specific pieces of LEGO in Solidworks and use them to build an object from an instructional reference. Once the construction was complete students were asked to produce a catalogue shot and a learners report reflecting on the experience.

Complete project time: 1 Month

During an internship at Xandros Corp. my first assignment was to design a general user interface layout for a personal information manager, and design the email section in detail. This project allowed me to use the design process from initial research stages thru to a final product. Extensive user testing was also conducted to ensure proper placement of buttons and logical visual cues. Following this design exercise I was asked to design a touch friendly user interface for an instant messaging client. I was also tasked with creating new views for the client that were unconventional and unique. This project involved a large number of customizations on the user end.

ALCATEL-LUCENT INTERNSHIP - EXPLORING THE WONDERS OF WEB DESIGN AND USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN.

During my internship at Alcatel-Lucent I was tasked with modernizing over 1500 16x16 button icons for the SAM application. This update included setting design and palette standards and building a sense of unity in the icon family. I also took it upon myself to create an icon tutorial since the new theme was going to extend to future applications. Other projects included: designing and implementing icons (16x16 and 32x32) for new application features, a full redesign of the UX intranet website, server rack drawings, updating the application GUI Guidelines, and various in-house graphics (mugs, shirts, posters).

This document explains the artistic guidelines of icons used in SAM/CPAM applications. If an aspect of the icon development process is unclear after reading this document, please bring it to our attention. Existing icons found on the User Experience website should provide a good example of what directions to follow. This document is meant to explain the icons in further detail and to be a useful resource in case of doubt. Also, this document will hopefully provide you with help on what you should change if you have designed an icon and feel it doesn’t seamlessly fit in with the rest of the system. Please keep in mind that a consistency in icon style helps create more sound and complete products.

Brush Settings In Adobe Photoshop, set the Pencil tool to the square 1px setting.

Sizing and Positioning The icons in the SAM/CPAM applications are generally drawn in 16x16 pixel bounding boxes – with the exception of alarm icons which are drawn in 13x16 pixel bounding boxes, these will be covered after. When starting a new icon, open a new file with the following settings (replace width to 13 pixels for alarm icons).
