Courier Release The Kern County Fire Department has found that individuals and a fire protection company posing as firefighters are performing unnecessary inspections at local businesses. These subjects will enter a business suggesting they represent the department and state that they are going to perform the "quarterly fire inspection". After these fraudulent inspections, businesses would receive an invoice for

services that were allegedly performed. This is then followed by "aggressive and professional collection efforts". The Kern County Fire Department conducts fire inspections in all Kern businesses once per calendar year. Business owners, do not let anyone inspect your fire extinguisher, sprinkler system or alarm system, unless you know they are legitimate or until requested by Kern County Fire Department personnel. Help them combat this fraud in our community.

Social Security office changes hours Courier Release The Bakersfield Social Security office will now be open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a reduction of 30 minutes per weekday. In addition, beginning January 2, the office will close to the public at noon every Wednesday. Most Social Security services do not require a visit to a local office. signing up for direct deposit, replacing a Medicare card, obtaining a proof of income letter or informing Social Security of a change of address or telephone number are conveniently available at socialsecurity.gov or by dialing the toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call the TTY number, 1-800-3250778. The Social Security office that serves the Kern River Valley is located at 2575 Haley Street, Bakersfield.
