• Supernatural television drama and horror series by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec based on the book series written by L.J.Smith • Series was premiered on CW in 2009 • Is a series not a serial as the story line continues clearly from each episode • Takes place in Mystic Falls, Virginia, where the main character Elena Gilbert finds her self getting involved with many supernatural creatures. Obviously mostly vampires • The style of series could be Linear and non-linear where the story-line continues in each episode and season, yet multiple times in seasons they will use flashbacks to connect past and present to gradually build a background story • Anti-realist • Open endings always hinting what is going to happen next episode, dramatic endings

• Scene starts with camera tracking main character, letting the audiences eyes follow her every movement; leaving it unknown to the audience where she is heading. • The music here is slow paced, which comforts the audience into letting them think that nothing bad is going to happen, and also reflects the weather. • The picture at this point is quite bright which would not provoke any thoughts of bad things to happen • The camera smoothly pans over to the sign which reads, ‘Mystic Falls Cemetry’. This is an establishing shot to relieve the audience from wondering where she is heading and now wonder why she is entering the cemetery and can only trigger thoughts of bad things to come. • In the scene there a lots of close-ups and slow pans of the area to make it look calm, also to isolate the character and make it look like she is the only one there. • The happy, flowing music and bright weather contrasts the location which makes things unpredictable to know if anything will happen. • When the crow squawks it shows a reaction shot of the main character as if the crow was trying to talk to her. • The crow squawking is cliche in horror films/series to represent death and evil. Also relating to ‘The Birds’ by Alfred Hitchcock, people automatically associate it with danger and being under attack. • Having the mix of her voicing over what she is writing in the diary and speaking out loud makes it appear as if she has escaped her world of being wrapped up in what she is writing and what has happened in her day to distract her and come into reality of where she is. As when she notices the bird the music fades to silence, introducing non-diegetic sound of a high pitched note.

Having the mix of her voicing over what she is writing in the diary and speaking out loud makes it appear as if she has escaped her world of being wrapped up in what she is writing and what has happened in her day to distract her and come into reality of where she is (the cemetry). As when s notices the bird the music fades to silence, introducing non-diegetic sound of a high pitched note. Which may have been made in the studio using the Foley technique. Birds try to fly to higher branches to show status and feel superior, so when the bird flew to a higher level to the character, it was as if it was saying that it had more power over her. Making her appear inferior to it. As a point of view shot when Elena looks back to see who is there, the camera shows the P.O.V of the person spying on her and the camera movement is shaky as if we are seeing it through their eyes. The pace of the music instantly speeds up as she starts running making the audience feel on edge as if the ‘enemy’ is after her.
