A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NAHEED K. NENSHI

October 2018

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NENSHI On behalf of City Council and the citizens of Calgary, I am pleased to bring greetings to all of you. The Kerby Centre Seniors’ Directory of Services is a valuable resource for our community. It provides information about a variety of programs and services available in Calgary that help improve our quality of life as we age. Many of these programs are offered by The City of Calgary while others are available through other levels of government and community agencies. This directory is yet another way that The Kerby Centre supports Calgarians. For over 40 years, the Kerby Centre has offered a warm and caring environment where senior citizens can explore and participate in programs in the areas of continuing education, healthy eating, fitness, and travel—all resources designed to keep our citizens engaged in the community. My family has personally benefited from the programs offered at The Kerby Centre, and I know the positive impact that the Centre can have on quality of life. I hope that readers of this directory find services that will help them take advantage of all that Calgary has to offer. I invite you to discover the possibilities. Sincerely, Naheed K. Nenshi MAYOR 6

DIRECTORY OF SERVICES WILLS AND ESTATES ESTATE:

•• Is all the property and money owned by an individual when they die.

WILL:

• Is a legal document prepared by a person prior to their death that outlines how their Estate will be given out after their death. •• It is always wise to have a lawyer prepare a will to avoid legal problems.

INTESTATE:

• A term used for a person who dies without a valid will. •• Contact a lawyer or Public Trustee 403-297-6541, for instructions on how to handle this situation.

HOLOGRAPH WILL:

• A handwritten will signed by the person making the will. • A witness is not required to sign a Holograph Will; however it is a good idea to have two independent people witness the signature. •• This type of will may not be legal in all provinces.

EXECUTOR:

•• Is the person or persons named in a will to deal with any financial matters related to the person who has died and to distribute the estate.

BENEFICIARY:

• Is the person or organization named in a will who will receive the assets of the estate. •• The executor and the beneficiary may be the same person.

PROBATE:

• Probate is a legal process that takes place after someone’s death. • It involves proving that the deceased’s will is valid, and dividing the property as instructed by the will. • By planning ahead, it may be possible to avoid probate. • Property that is held jointly with a spouse or other person does not need to be probated. • Before any transfer of assets, it is a good idea to get legal advice. • There may be costs and tax to pay. • Probate may not be necessary if the estate is small. • Probate is required when a house or investment is in the deceased’s name only. • A will needs to be probated if any individual such as a financial institution or the land titles office asks for it to be probated. • Applications for probate are usually made by a lawyer however a lawyer is not required. • Probate forms in a package called Surrogate Court Rules can be ordered from the Queens Printer at www.qp.alberta.ca or by dialing 403-310-0000 and asking for 780-427-4952. •• The assistant at the court of Queens Bench (403-297-7281) will give limited information to anybody who wishes to apply for probate without a lawyer.

JOINT LAND TITLES:

• It is a good idea to have both husband and wife listed on a land title to eliminate the need of probate. • Lawyers DO NOT recommend that children or grandchildren be put on a land title. •• By adding another person to a land title, that person receives an equal share in the property and the property cannot be sold without that individual’s permission.

PERSONAL SAFETY CALGARY FIRE DEPARTMENT COMMUNITY SAFETY DIVISION ‘Fire and Fall Prevention: Remembering When’ Call 3-1-1 to book a Fire Safety Presentation for Seniors. • Fire and Fall Prevention: Remembering When is a Fire and Fall Prevention Program for older adults, developed by NFPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible. • Remembering When is centered around 16 key safety messages — eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention — developed by experts from national and local safety organizations. • The program was designed to be implemented by your local fire department, through group presentations, during home visits, and as part of a smoke alarm installation and fall intervention program. •• If you are interested in booking a Community Safety Officer to present on this informative program, please contact 311.

CALGARY FIRE DEPARTMENT, SENIORS SERVICES Smoke Alarm Safety Check for Seniors P: 3-1-1 www.calgary.ca/fire Smoke alarms save lives! •• When properly installed, tested and maintained smoke alarms provide the best early warning system in the event of a house fire. Detection and warning of smoke and fire saves lives and reduces damage to homes and personal belongings. They also cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. What you should know: • Test smoke alarms once a month by pressing the alarm’s test button and replace the batteries of each smoke alarm once a year. • Replace smoke alarms after 10 years. Or, if you discover a smoke alarm is defective or broken after testing, replace it. 43

DIRECTORY OF SERVICES •• Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, including the basement, and ensure there is a smoke alarm in or near every sleeping area. What we do: • Often, older adults are faced with the challenge of meeting the safety requirements surrounding the installation and care of working smoke alarms. The Calgary Fire Department offers a service for our seniors to help with this issue. • Are you faced with mobility challenges? Is your smoke alarm not easily accessible? Examples such as these are cause for concern. By calling 311, you can arrange to have a fire crew or Community Safety officer visit your home and address your smoke alarm issues.
