Old Age Security (OAS) •• A monthly benefit available to most Canadians 65 years of age or older who have lived in Canada for at least ten years. Those who have lived in a country with which Canada has a reciprocal agreement, may be eligible to receive a pension before the end of the ten-year period. A list of these countries can be found on the website. Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) •• The supplement provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to low-income Old Age Security recipients living in Canada. The amount of the supplement is based on the applicant’s total actual income in the previous calendar year and marital status. In most cases, renewal is automatic with completion of each year’s tax return by April 30. 57
