 January – March: Ndutu Region

The months of January through March are when the wildebeest start to gather in a place to start the Great Migration Safari cycle. Of all the months, January is the most unpredictable month. There’s a lot of movement involved from the south and east of Seronera, animals can be found literally everywhere or nowhere. The month of February is the calving season and almost 8,000 babies (or gnus) get added to the herd population every single day for the entire month of February. As days pass by, in late February or early March, animals tend to congregate at the Ndutu Region. Nudutu Is located in the borders of Serengeti National Park Safari and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

 April – May: Grumeti/Western Corridor

After gathering at Ndutu and feeding on the environment for few months, the herds finally start to move in large number towards north. Leaving Ndutu behind, they venture into the plains of where Simba and Moru Kopjes are located. These are protruding structures coming out of the ground and few meters in height.

Some kopjes are lion territories, so expect to witness some fearless prey-predator action. From your Serengeti Accommodation, columns of up to 40 km can be seen traversing the plains at a time which is truly a spectacular sight. Thousands of zebras, impalas, and other antelopes also join in the herd in this mega event and the herd in its totality grows even larger. The long rain still continues through May and the wildebeest follow the pattern.

 June: Western And Central Serengeti

In the months of June, the herds make it into the western corridor of Serengeti National Park Safari. June is also the month of Grumeti River crossing when wildebeest’s million In numbers cross the river skillfully evading the crocodiles that inhabit the waters. Other animals that can be spotted in riverine areas are hippos, lions, colobus monkeys, hyenas, and elephants.

 July – September: Northern Serengeti

After crossing the river, the herds spread out and move further into Central Serengeti, while some still remain in the Grumeti Reserve. The weather remains dry for most part and it is also the mating season. In the months of August, the herds cross the border and move into the Mara Reserve of Kenya. Fight among males for domination is seen. In the months of September, the remaining herds are left in the Grumeti cross the river and get into Mara.

 October – November: Homecoming

After feeding on the green environment of Mara, beginning from October the herds start to move back into Tanzania. The movement is rather slow as they cover a vast area of Masai Mara Game Reserve. As short rains begin in Serengeti Safari which gives rise to lush grass, most of the wildebeest start leaving Mara.

 December: Ndutu Region

In the month of December, all of the wildebeest are in the plains of Serengeti and it marks the completion of one Great Migration Safari cycle.
