Dental Uniform:
Choose it, use it and save money There’s more to dental uniform than meets the eye. Infection control, branding, comfort and patient expectations are all important. Dental clinicians spend the majority of their day working face to face with patients, and presentation makes a huge impact on the overall impression of your practice. From the moment they walk through the door, your patients are putting their care into your hands and expecting the highest standards in every aspect of treatment delivery. A smart appearance inspires confidence and helps your patients to feel relaxed. So choice of dental uniform is important. Everyday guidelines advise: • All uniform should be short-sleeved and arms should be bare • Uniforms should be changed on a daily basis and washed at 60 degrees C to help prevent cross-contamination • Open-toed footwear is not suitable • Neither uniform nor surgery shoes should be worn outside of the surgery - staff should change in and out of their uniform within the practice. Choosing dental uniform is just like choosing everyday clothes; you want to choose a good brand, comfortable and hard-wearing fabrics with modern, functional design. It needs to look good, feel good and last the rigours of daily use. Style It’s important that the style you choose suits a range of different body shapes and sizes. Your receptionist and other non-clinical staff also need to be considered. Colour is an important consideration; bright colours give a light, friendly impression, whereas more muted colours can give an elegant, professional feel. Comfort Clothing plays a big part in the way you feel. It’s vital that the team feel comfortable throughout the day. Soft and comfortable fabrics are important, to help work at speed and under pressure. Look out for stretch fabrics which can help you to keep cool, even on busy or warm days. Remember, if you look and feel good then the patient will feel good too. Price and Quality Working in a busy dental practice is a constant battle against stains, so it’s understandable that you want to feel assured that your uniform will stand the test of time. Our brands produce uniform specifically for the dental market and are produced with durability in mind. Care For environmental reasons it’s often advised to wash non-clinical wear at 30C. But what temperature should you wash your dental uniform at? The 2009 HTM-01-05 guidelines advise “machine-washing clothing…with a suitable detergent at a minimum temperature of 60C”. The updated 2013 HTM-01-05 guidelines go further to say that “uniforms and workwear should be washed at the hottest temperature suitable for the fabric”. Remember to check the washing recommendations on your uniform, as care guidelines vary by manufacturer and fabric, and washing at too high a temperature can damage fabric, cause shrinkage and may affect the colour of the garment. Finishing touches It’s worth looking at the finishing detail on your uniform before you buy, as small features can make a big difference in the surgery environment: handy pockets, stretch fabrics and rear vents all make life a little easier.
