Thesis Statement: Structural inequality have constricted ethnic communities within the metropolitan fabric marginalizing neighborhoods into inhuman urban spaces. The approach is to nurture the uses of intimate streetscapes where these neigborhoods resided repurposing the civic qualities into the fabric of intimate alley spaces as a method to enable positive urban side effects towards diminishing the negative association to the activities that occur in narrow streetscapes. The urban response is to pave an urban aperture bridging Market and Mission streets as a continuous fabric revealing and reclaiming the lost layers of ethnic neighborhoods.

(1900): Urban planning in San Francisco has organized primary and secondary street grids within the fabric that is apparent in the South of Market site. The inhumane act of pushing ethnic neighborhoods into undesirable urban spaces is a consequence of economic and social laws confining the Japanese community hiding from interfacing with prominent streets of San Francisco.

PROGRAMMATIC NARRATIVE: The programmatic procession aims to reveal the lost layers of the site by offering spaces for ethnic communities to feel protected from facing similar discrimination and marginalization issues that japanese endured during the 1900’s. The building will be a hybrid of a Museum and Immigration Center. The programmatic adjacencies will pair galleries and workshops that will stagger generating new social ecologies within the building intended to blur the ethnical and cultural boundaries by providing spaces to congregate, exchange ideas, and share their experiences with eachother as a means to create a new type of community within the building. The gallery component is inspired by a book The Art of Gaman, which publishes the artifacts produced during the Japanese Internment Camps. This book not only has a deep connection to my family, but also represents the resiliency of an ethnic community that endured the unbearable with patience and dignity. The process of making was the vehicle that allowed this ethnic community to cope with their situation. This building will house a series of ceramic, wood, and sewing galleries with adjacent workshops intended to nuture and cultivate an envornment that educationally informs the people through teaching vocational skills as a tool to generate jobs and opportunities for the tenants of the building.
