LEADERSHIP KENOSHA MISSION The mission of Leadership Kenosha is to develop a diverse group of emerging and existing community leaders by enhancing their community knowledge, civic network, and leadership skills to ensure the continuing vitality of our community. Leadership Kenosha is an innovative community leadership development program designed to strengthen and challenge leadership skills of community members. Participants come from all segments of the business and nonprofit community. Participants meet monthly to engage in leadership development training and explore segments of the Kenosha County community (i.e. local government, law enforcement, human services, health care, education, business and economy, nonprofits). In addition to attending monthly sessions, participants complete a team project to gain practical leadership skills, enhance awareness of community problems, and identify systems and methods to effect change. ABOUT THE FACILITATORS University of Wisconsin-Parkside provided the program development and facilitation for Leadership Kenosha this year. The lead facilitator was Debra Karp, Director of Community Engagement at UW-Parkside. She is a 2007 graduate of Leadership Racine and has served on the Leadership Kenosha Steering Committee since 2014. Amy Garrigan, Community Engagement Specialist at UW-Parkside, served as a cofacilitator and coordinated program day logistics. She is a 2017 graduate of Leadership Kenosha.

You have had quite a journey over the last nine months, from the challenge courses at the Wonderland Camp, to the project presentations today. Hopefully, this experience has given you a deeper knowledge of Kenosha, while exposing you to the civic network and community leaders, along with improving your own leadership skills! You should all be proud of the project work you have completed for non-profit organizations in our community. Your time and dedication is appreciated by not only the organizations, but the people who these organizations serve. You have made a difference! I would also like to thank all the volunteers who have made the Leadership Kenosha program a success this year; the presenters who volunteered their time and shared their expertise, the organizations that opened their doors and offered our participants a place to meet, the employers who sponsored their leaders in the program, and the Leadership Kenosha Steering Committee for offering their own leadership support! 19TH ANNIVERSARY LEADERSHIP KENOSHA CELEBRATES 19 YEARS! Leadership Kenosha was launched in September 1998 with the first class of participants graduating in May 1999. The idea for a community leadership program rose from the need to develop emerging leaders in Kenosha. The Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce, led by Patrick Guard, formed a steering committee to develop a “hands-on� program that would build leadership skills as well as provide an overview of the community and its assets. From the beginning the core foundation for the program has consisted of three components: development of leadership skills, enhancement of awareness of community issues, and participation in small group community projects. Over the last nineteen years over 300 individuals have graduated from Leadership Kenosha. Alumni have gone on to serve in numerous leadership roles in Kenosha County including Kenosha County Board of Supervisors, Kenosha Unified School District Board, CUSH President, Kiwanis President, and KEA Union President.

DAY 1 The Leadership Kenosha Retreat kicked off the program by engaging participants in several team building exercises. Participants also completed the Real Colors® exercise to learn more about their personality temperament.
The community sector was the Creative Economy, where participants learned about the strategic planning process underway for the Creative Economy and the impact of the arts in Kenosha. Participants identified personal values and developed a personal mission. Working in their teams, they then went on a Kenosha City Scoping Adventure, identifying key assets, opportunities and challenges in the community. Participants also heard from the community project sponsors, and selected their team projects for the year.
DAY 2 The Challenge Course involved exciting activities that encouraged participants to work cooperatively and develop skills to solve problems both logically and physically.

The impact of multi-generations in the workplace was presented to increase awareness of generational differences. After a lunch discussion with the Mayor of Kenosha, participants were coached through the project management process for their team projects. United Way of Kenosha County discussed the perspectives of the non-profit sector in Kenosha. 19
After an overview of county government, a panel of local government officials shared the vision and challenges faced by local municipalities, county and city government. Participants engaged in a workshop to increase their knowledge of public speaking techniques and practice their oratory skills. The Kenosha News Publisher presented an informative discussion about the role of media in the local community and the changing role of print media. The leadership skill presented was on the topic of leadership ethics and what it means to be a trustworthy leader.

Following a skill development session on conflict resolution, participants heard about the complexities of the criminal justice and courts system from a panel of law enforcement and judicial experts. They toured the Kenosha Correctional Center and interacted with an inmate panel that discussed the correctional system and re-entry challenges.
Participants got an overview of Uline and learned about the challenges of change and innovation. A panel of local business experts provided insight into current economic development issues in Kenosha. The leadership skill building session highlighted the different ways people experience change and offered participants ideas and skills for leading a successful change process. Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser shared his perspective of Kenosha County’s current economic climate, challenge and successes. 20

Lunch with the KUSD Superintendent offered participants the chance to hear about some of the successes of the public education system in Kenosha and the opportunities for improvement and growth. H. Muir facilitated a session on building on your skills to increase effectiveness and leadership branding strategies.
