Summer 2019

Edition #007

'Tis the Season for Trail Blazing GO FORTH AND CONQUER YOUR SUMMER TO-DO LIST BECAUSE IT'S THE PERFECT TIME FOR SOME OUTDOOR EXPLORING. THIS SUMMER WE ARE ALL ABOUT UNPLUGGING, DISCONNECTING AND SPENDING SOME QUALITY TIME OUT IN THAT WILD BLUE YONDER WE'RE ALWAYS HEARING ABOUT. WHETHER IT'S A ROAD TRIP OUT WEST OR JUST A QUIET AFTERNOON AT YOUR LOCAL PARK, SOAK IN THAT VITAMIN D AND FEEL THE WIND IN YOUR HAIR BECAUSE IT JUST MAY BE WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED.

Spending time in nature doesn't just feel good, it's actually been proven to be good for you, too! "Shinrin-Yoku" or "Forest Bathing" is the new "it" term for the practice of spending time in wooded areas and researchers are showing it can be beneficial to your mental wellbeing and overall health. Studies conducted on the subject report lower blood pressure and stress hormones post-walk. Additionally, it has been shown to reduce fatigue and can aid in anxiety and depression, too. Some scientists suggest it may even be useful in boosting your immune system! All that from just a walk in the woods— not bad, huh? This Japanese practice of preventative medicine is gaining interest stateside and we couldn't be happier about it. Get ready to see forest bathing retreats pop up across the country that focus on the practice, integrating it with yoga and other wellness activities. It's the perfect excuse to slow down and become one with nature. So put down your phone and get to trail blazing, already!

MAKE THE MOS T OF THE GRE AT OUTDOORS While nature can be beautiful, it can also be wild and dangerous, so it's important to make sure you're taking all the necessary precautions when preparing for your outdoor adventures. Here's a few bits of advice to keep you fueled, focused and enjoying your time outside. Know your surroundings Whether it’s an afternoon hike or setting up camp, it’s critical to be mindful of where you are and know what’s around you to help prevent any mishaps, such as run-ins with wild animals or poisonous plants. Plan ahead The gear you bring will either make you or break you. Do your research ahead of time to be sure you’ve got all the essentials for your adventure. Also, check the weather beforehand to be better prepared! Stay hydrated Because nothing good ever came from not drinking enough water. If you plan on back-

packing for a long period of time, a water filter is essential to collect drinking water from lakes and rivers. Protect your eyes Shameless plug. But seriously, you can’t take in all that the great blue yonder has to offer if you’re squinting because the sun is too bright! Wear the right shoes A pair of comfortable and durable shoes is so important if you wish to glide through trails with a smile on your face rather than gritting your teeth. However, sometime blisters are just inevitable, so for that—pack moleskin which protects your skin from shoe friction! Protect your skin Nothing is worse than a sunburn AND itchy skin. Lather up in SPF and bug spray before hitting the trails. Your skin will thank you. Keep cool Tis' the season of sweat and humidity. Opt for activewear that is breathable with moisture-wicking fabrics.

Affordable Summer Fun When we think of childhood Summers, we think chasing the ice cream truck by day and fireflies by night, frolicking in the sprinklers, and the countless hours of fun that didn’t cost a thing! MAKE GUILT- FREE POPSICLES Popsicles on a hot, summers day is not only the ultimate dynamic duo—it’s a rite of passage. The only problem is that the store-bought kind typically contains tons of refined sugars and artificial flavors. But with warm weather comes some serious ripe deliciousness, so opt for a healthier option by DIY-ing your own popsicles with the seasons freshest ingredients for an even more refreshing taste! It’s as easy as four steps: 1. Simply purée your favorite fresh fruit 2. Combine Greek yogurt for creaminess, berries for texture and honey for sweetness 3. Add mixtures in popsicle molds (with wooden sticks) 4. Freeze for 4-6 hours, and voilà! A quick Google search will gain you endless options of flavors, so we’ll leave the creative part up to you!

FRUITS AND VEGGIES IN SEASON

GO TO THE FARMERS MARKE T Make your summer weekends incomplete without a visit to your local farmers market. Even if it doesn’t sound like your ideal summer activity, you should totes make it a weekly tradish, and here’s why: SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL GROWERS IS ECO-CHIC.

ZUCCHINI PEACHES

Small family farms typically conserve fossil fuels and produce less environmental waste in the form of carbon monoxide, pesticide use and chemical fertilizers. Thank you for coming; class dismissed.

EGGPLANT

IT PUTS YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. Nev-

er tried kohlrabi or squash blossoms before? Us either, but sounds adventurous! THE FOOD JUST TASTES BETTER. Compare a super-

market tomato to a juicy heirloom tomato from the farmers market, and you'll understand. Produce from the farmers market tastes better because it’s picked at the peak of ripeness so it’s ultra-fresh and flavorful when you get it! The more ya know.

are their personal tips, advice, favorite memories and more!

DAWN RUIZ WITH DAUGHTER, JULIETTE, 7 PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

What are your tips for maintaining a healthy work-life balance? DR: Keeping organized! I have a dinner schedule, laundry schedule, cleaning schedule, ect. The burning question every day on my way home is “what’s for dinner?” so, I also do meal prep on Sunday for really busy school nights. Having a routine helps me to be sure everything is done when it needs to be, and I am not overwhelmed trying to catch up or figuring out what to make for dinner. Planning makes things a lot less stressful for me.

What’s something you always say as a parent to your kids? DR: I love you no matter what. I want them to know that whoever they become and even when they make mistakes, I will always be there for them with love and support.

JASON WEHLAGE WITH KIDS, HOLLAN, 12 AND JAX, 10 DIRECTOR OF PRODUCT AND DESIGN

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

JW: When I’m not in the office or traveling, I definitely try to go to all I can…we are usually around each other, so just being around and spending time with them right now is great. I know the next couple years that will diminish as they begin to think we’re less cool with each passing day.

Favorite memory with your kids? JW: Nothing beats the days they were born, that’s a feeling you can’t replicate. Just thankful for all we’ve been able to do and excited for what we’ve yet to do.

MIKE CUNDIFF WITH GRANDSON, LEVON, 8 CEO

What advice do you give Levon about growing up? MC: He's still a bit young but things like mind your Mom and Dad, and wear a helmet when biking!

What about general life advice? MC: Have fun! Make memories and enjoy time with family.

What's something you want your grandkids to know? MC: I would like my grandkids to know how much they are loved and what a gift they have been to their Grandmother and I.

CHARMAYNE JACKSON WITH KIDS, LENNOX, 15 AND CIERRA, 18 ACCOUNTING MANAGER

What is your favorite moment/memory with your kids? CJ: My daughter just graduated from high school and is now getting prepared for college at University of Louisville, so this definitely ranks as one of my highlight moments in her life. My son just recently finished middle school with an excellent track season. A very memorable moment was when he became the national leader for middle school triple jumpers.

What school advice do you give to your kids? CJ: I think focused effort is a key when trying to master any new information or skill. If they can eliminate distractions and place focused energy on the learning and understanding the material I feel they can be very successful in school and other endeavors.
