As part of their Trainee Management Development Course the students at Tralee IT were tasked with organising and running an event. They opted for a special ‘whiskey tasting talk’ hosted by the well-known whiskey expert, John Moriarty from The Park Hotel Kenmare. As well as John’s informative and witty presentation the main event was a charity raffle in aid of Angelman syndrome Ireland, with some incredible prizes, which raised a fantastic total of €1,081 for Angelman Syndrome Ireland.

The draw for the Sean Daly & Co 25th annual Christmas Hamper was drawn on 23rd of December. As always the tickets were drawn by Peace Commissionaire Pete Hanley and overseen by James Brosnan. 1st prize of a hamper was won by Vincent O’Leary, 2nd prize of a €50 insurance voucher was won by Dan Keane, Jean Flynn won 3rd prize of a bottle of wine whilst Declan Fitzmaurice was awarded a box of chocolates for 4th prize. Thanks to all those who bought tickets for the raffle. €650 was raised from the raffle and will be donated to the Marymount Hospice.

January – a clean slate – maybe time to try something new?

January is the traditional time of year for change, for self improvement, for leaving our bad habits behind and putting new ones in place. For a lot of people, going back to education is a new beginning, and it involves taking up new habits like attending a class, and making time to read at home. A writer from New York, Gretchen Rubin, has written a great book about changing your habits called Better Than Before, available at Kenmare Library. These are some of her key points:

Kenmare was visited by a host of angels over the Christmas period! Knitted by members of ‘Churches Together’ in Kenmare, and blessed at a special service in St Patrick's, nearly 300 angels were distributed to homes in the Kenmare area. They bore messages of Peace and Goodwill to all.

The Glen Committee, Kilgarvan, have recently installed two defibrillators that have been acquired for the community through the Community Development Fund run by ESBI. These will be located on the side wall of the Top of Coom Pub, and on the side wall at Incheese Hall (Gortlahard). To open the Defibrillator boxes (kindly sponsored by Mark Éire) 1. Break glass on red key holder and remove key. 2. Insert key in key slot and rotate clockwise until handle pops out. 3. Turn handle and open door. Twenty people in the local community recently completed defibrillator and CPR training course in the Top of Coom. In the hopefully unlikely event of you finding yourself needing to use the defibrillator, please ensure that you also ring an ambulance immediately! A defibrillator will improve the chances of survival greatly, but further medical treatment is essential also.

• Make it easy to do right and hard to go wrong, by setting things up in your favour (this could mean putting the biscuit tin on the top shelf, or making an arrangement to give your friend a lift to class to ensure you go each week) • Things often get harder before they get easier – it can be challenging to go back to education, but it can help in so many ways, you’ll be glad you did. • It’s easier to change our surroundings than ourselves – so by changing your environment, you help yourself to change your habits. Why not tidy out a corner of the house to make room for a comfortable chair and a lamp for a private reading corner? • We can’t make people change, but when we change, others may change – when your friends and family see you taking a course and getting on well, it might encourage them in their own studies. • Once you’re ready to begin, begin now. Kenmare Women’s Group

First off a big ‘thank you’ to our committee for giving us a wonderful Autumn timetable which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and our Spring one looks fun packed too! We have several good speakers coming and some different activities planned for all of the members.

We had a great time with recent visitors to our group before Christmas. Thank you to Benoit Lorge, the ladies all enjoyed the chocolate tasting very much. A visit from Geoffroy Meynet was very informative, a great lesson on the anatomy of the eye, eye diseases and problems. Everybody learned something new that day and many took up the chance to go for an appointment to get their eyes checked since. We had a fun packed morning with the wonderful Annie Kelleher who showed her wonderful skills of how to make Christmas Wreaths and table decorations and, along with her great sense of humour, a good laugh was had by all. Our last get together in 2016 was at Davitts for our Christmas meal and it was a great success, the food was wonderful and the mulled wine too, also the care and attention to detail from Mary and her staff was excellent, so thank you to everyone at Davitts from us all, plus the jokes in the Christmas crackers had us all laughing, they were very funny. We have had several new members join us this year and more are joining in January so why don’t you come along and join in the fun in the New Year. We started back since January 11th 2017 at the Adult Education Centre, so call in and see us, and good luck to everyone for 2017

For more information about our group please call Katherine McKenna on 086 069 0169.

Out of the 15,000 disqualified drivers in Ireland, 12,000 of these still hold their driving licenses and are driving on our roads. The current relaxed approach has led to the deaths of 500 people on our roads at the hands of disqualified drivers. I have proposed that the most known dangerous drivers to the Gardai and likely to re-offend should be electronically tagged and stopped should they attempt to drive. consultation by Senate on Amhrán na bhFiann The purpose of the public consultation is to invite submissions from interested parties or citizens to consider the most appropriate way for the State to treat the National Anthem. When copyright expired in 2012, Fine Gael gave a strong commitment to act on the issue. However, despite many attempts by me and other members of Seanad Éireann to force them into acting, they have done nothing to protect this important anthem. The lack of strict copyright in place for the national anthem has left this important state symbol exposed. Other countries have ensured that their national anthems continue to be protected by copyright. It’s important that we take similar measures to protect Amhrán na bhFiann. Senator Daly writes report on impact of Brexit on Northern Ireland As a member of the Implementation of the Oireachtas Good Friday Agreement Committee I am currently writing a report on the impact of Brexit on Northern Ireland and what we want to see in the final agreement between Europe and Britain. Kenmare community takes ‘Dogs for the Disabled’ to their hearts

The Kenmare community really took Irish charity Dogs for the Disabled to their hearts before Christmas when they donated the proceeds of all programme sales from the very successful Small Roads Dining & Theatre Festival to this wonderful charity. The assistance dogs at this wonderful charity really are the gift that keeps giving. Most of the pups start their lives in The Dochas Centre at Mountjoy Prison, before leaving at approximately eight weeks to be homed in communities around Ireland, living with families who socialise them, before moving to Shelton Abbey at approximately 16 months to be trained by inmates, under the supervision of the charity trainers. This gives the inmates valuable life skills and the opportunity to give back to society, whilst being hugely beneficial for the charity as it allows them to train more puppies in a cost effective manner. This unique Charity, the only one of it’s kind in Europe, was the brainchild of Jennifer Dowler who has been providing dogs to children and adults with physical disabilities for over a decade now, after realising she had a natural ability to work with dogs and people with life limiting disabilities. Jennifer, a mother of three young children, has put more than twenty years into perfecting this talent, and has transformed more than 100 lives in the process. As Jennifer said, "Disability can lead to isolation, loss of confidence and feelings of low self-esteem. Not only that but for many people living with a disability being unable to do even a simple task like picking up the post can leave them feeling depressed and dependent. Dogs for the Disabled trains dogs to assist with practical, everyday tasks to help a person with a disability to live life to the full, breaking down barriers to the outside world and helping to improve confidence and stress levels." Over 80% of the charity’s clients are children, between the ages of 6 and 12 years, living with severe physical disabilities which effect their independence and social interaction. These assistance dogs are especially trained to assist the physically disabled to carry out a range of practical tasks in order to achieve greater independence. These everyday tasks

include opening and closing doors, picking up dropped items, emptying the washing machine and helping a child with severe walking difficulties to walk with greater ease and balance. With 210 dogs nationwide and 120 currently out working, it costs the charity €15,000 to train and support each Assistance Dog. Dogs for the Disabled receive no government funding, relying completely on the generosity of sponsorship, donations and fundraising, and the dogs are partnered with disabled people at no cost to the recipient. Each Assistance Dog is trained to help his or her new partner but is also reliant on them to provide for their needs including exercise, feeding, love and care. As a result, encourages the them to become more active and outgoing in their community by taking their assistance dog for walks and engaging with the public at large. Thus increases confidence, encourages them to take up new activities e.g. returning to work or further education. The charities partnerships have found the experience for getting an assistance dog life changing. “Seeing children and adults lives transformed because they can now walk unaided or go out on their own for the first time is very rewarding”, said Jennifer. The charity was recently nominated for two prestigious awards. “The awards are a great boost for all our partnerships,”Jennifer said, “As they recognise the importance of their disability and that they too deserve to live fulfilling lives. It was also a great boost for the charity as we are currently looking for a site on which to build a headquarters so we can move out of our temporary rented base in Abbeyville, Togher, which we are very grateful for but is not suitable for us to train our partnerships in. Dogs for the Disabled is always looking for puppy socialisers, volunteers and fund-raising opportunities as they receive no government funding. If you would like to find out more, or feel you can help change lives, please contact them on 021 431 6627 / info@dogsfordisabled.ie You can find more information about Dogs for the Disabled at dogsfordisabled.ie or you can follow the adventures of their trainee assistant dog Ivy on facebook at Life of Ivy.

Gone Fishing With

John O’Hare

Last Sunday morning on a television cookery programme a chef was showing how to prepare a fish, the ‘humble mullet’, and in the process mentioned that it was nicer and tastier to eat than sea bass. Now I have to tell you that the mullet to me is always associated with filth and dirt. When I was young the tidal section of the Finnihy up to Cromwells Bridge was teeming with them, reason being that the town’s sewerage system, which was in those days not fit for purpose, ran into the river near the old Lime Kiln. As well as that, all the offal from the then numerous slaughter houses in the area was dumped in the river. Not to forget the washings from the creamery, and domestic waste from the town dump also close to the creamery. There you have it, filth and dirt washing up and down the mouth of the river every day with the tides. It is a wonder to me looking back on those days that there was never an outbreak of some serious illness in the area. All I can remember is the unfortunate death of a young man from Market Street who got stabbed by a rusty nail in his foot near the sewage tanks, took ill from lock-jaw and, as I say, sadly for him modern medicine aid was not available. Big shoals of mullet thrived in the murky river water, if you travelled down to the river bank in Corkery’s Field beside the Tubrid Road any day you could watch them feeding sub surface, pulling at the floating offal, eating it and other unmentionables. It was disgusting. Believe me when I tell you that those feeding habits were not confined to the mullet. A local angler, now in his eighties, but still hale and hearty, fishing a flood in the Priest Falls, caught a handsome sea trout, took it home to his mother saying this will be nice for our tea. She went to clean the fish. My God was she sorry, she cut it open, all this green n muck with a vile stench fell out on the sink, it was curd from the butter

making in the creamery. They nearly had to fumigate their house and, even though it was a hard thing to do, it put him off eating fish for weeks. But back to the mullet, I can’t remember if I mentioned before that the late Florry McCarthy R.I.P. and myself tried every method including worm fishing, spinning minnows, and fly fishing to try, for the sport, to catch a big mullet. We came to the conclusion that the easy pickings were of more interest to them. Now I know they have small mouths and tiny hooks are required, also you will have more success stalking them and guessing their movements, a little ball of cheese or bread or, in the case of fly fishing, a tiny white fly fished on the surface could do the trick. Anyway, Florry and I threw our hats at trying to catch them by normal methods, instead we would shoot them with a stungun as we considered this to be the safest gun to use. Florry’s old black retriever was called into action as he as great at swimming and diving. We tried out this method and it worked a treat. We would wait until a big mullet was tugging at the offal, fire down under the water, it would zig zag, the dog needed no encouragement, in it would dive off the bank, you could see him chase and catch the fish under water and come out on to the back, proud as punch, fish in his mouth and deposit it at our feet. What fun we had. An old man used to follow us, possibly thinking we were shooting rabbits and we might give him one for his pot, but when he saw the shot fish he asked for them instead. Any time we went shooting mullet he followed us and took all the fish. This carried on for several weeks until the novelty wore off. I never heard of the old man’s health being damaged by his meals of mullet, but there was no danger of Florry or myself eating them. Time changes everything, Kenmare has a modern sewerage system, the creamery is no more, the old dump after several moves is now a transfer station, and all these improvements (?) have helped to clean up the mouth of the river. Are the mullet still there following the tide in and out? I am sure they are, cleaner and better too I suppose, but I still would not eat one. The salmon licences for 2017 are now on sale. The good news, despite awful fish returns last year, is that the Roughty is still open for fishing with brown tags to control catches. Prices are the same, no change, and I presume you are aware that salmon fishing in the Kenmare area opens on March 15th.

Exciting plans for Kenmare Kenmare Tidy Town Committee and KMEG have been Working closely with South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) and Kerry County Council who are jointly submitting an application to the LEADER fund through The Kerry Local Action Group (LAG) for funding to develop a Socio Economic Plan for the town. We are grateful to SKDP and Kerry County Council for driving this application on our behalf. This application is subject to funding being approved in a competitive process. If approved, the project will take place in two stages. Initially - Stage 1 Consultation & Planning - A process where a consultant will work to identify and assess what needs should be included in the plan. This will take the form of area based analysis and will include sectoral consultations with, statutory and non-statutory agencies, local businesses and community, sporting and special interest groups, and will include public consultation meetings. It is anticipated that this process will take up to 12 months. Stage 2 will be the implementation of the plan which will consist of short, medium and long term objectives and actions as set out within the Socio Economic Plan. The implementation process will be spread over a 5 year period, and will involve those who have contributed to the plan, and others becoming directly involved in the implementation of the actions. The benefit to everyone of a Socio Economic Plan will be an inclusive approach to identifying needs and available resources, and the realisation of completed projects for the benefit of the entire community. We will keep you informed of our progress. Great news for the beginning of 2017! Exercise equipment for Reenagros. We are delighted to announce that four pieces of outdoor exercise equipment will be sited in Reenagros. As the result of a joint venture between the Tidy Towns Committee and KMEG we have secured funding for this project from Kerry County Council. Many thanks to KCC for awarding Kenmare the grant - this facility will be great for everyone and will make exercising outdoors in Reenagros even more fun. It is hoped that the exercise equipment will be installed and ready to use by Spring. We will keep you updated on the progress.

Paying by euro in Antarctica! report by Heike O’Sullivan

The 1st January 2017 marked the 15th anniversary of the launch of the euro. It was a bit of a non-event and I, too, was only reminded of it when a friend’s teenage son interrupted our conversation by asking, “What’s a Punt?” Occasions like this, as when today’s youngsters laugh at the picture of a floppy disk, the huge bricks that were the 1980s mobile phones, or a rotary dial telephone, make me feel very ancient indeed. Everyone will remember when the new euro notes and coins became legal tender on 1st January 2002. The currency changeover created a lot of work for many people: Shopkeepers needed to display dual pricing for all items; a myriad of machines had to be upgraded, from tills to parking meters to vending machines. Every household was issued with a small pocket calculator programmed to easily convert from Punt to euro and back. Much hype was created as to how difficult the changeover would be when in fact the Irish in particular took to the new currency like a duck to water. A Eurobarometer survey revealed that by April 2002, 42% of Irish people thought about prices in the new currency, compared with only 17% across the other Eurozone member states. Mentioning the Eurozone, I was surprised to learn that the euro is the world’s second most traded currency after the US dollar. I hadn’t realised that the euro is also used outside of the EU, not just in 19 EU member states. The former Yugoslavian countries of Montenegro and Kosovo, as well as the microstates of Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City and Andorra use the euro as their sole currency. Further afield, some overseas territories in the West Indies and off Newfoundland have adopted the euro, as has the French-claimed sector of Antarctica although I’m not sure that there are any shops there. Perhaps with view to the euro’s 15th anniversary, the European Commission had a new Eurobarometer survey carried out in October 2016 which was published last month. I was surprised at some of the results, given the outspoken criticism of all EU related things in this country in the last few years. For instance, Ireland topped the table when asked if the euro is a good thing for their own country, with 81% of respondents agreeing, this figure up 6% from 2015. The Eurozone average is 56%. 85% of Irish interviewees thought that the euro has made travelling easier and cheaper, again leading the table compared with the Eurozone average of only 47%. Indeed, the trend for answers by the other Eurozone countries since 2015 is decidedly downward, with a whopping 13 out of 19 countries saying it’s become more expensive. The discontent obvious throughout the EU in recent months, is mirrored in some of the Eurobarometer poll findings: 92% of Eurozone states said their health systems need reform (Ireland is table topper with 97%), 91% labour market, 89% pension and education systems, 87% social security system, 79% taxation. 76% believe that governments need to save more today to prepare public finances for the aging population (Ireland 90%). When asked if the retirement age should be raised to ensure sustainability of the pension system, Ireland

again topped the table at 44% of respondents answering ‘totally agree’. The Eurozone average is 27%. Anyway, all in all, the Irish seem quite happy with the euro as their currency and as a member state of the Eurozone. However, as much as you all like your euro, are you quite sure that you haven’t any old Punt notes hidden away anywhere? As late as last year, the Central Bank of Ireland reported that there is still around €230 million (circa IR£180 million) in “old money” that hasn’t been returned. No doubt, much of this may have been lost in the wash, or gone abroad in a tourist’s purse, or buried in the garden by a secretive person who has since passed away. The Central Bank said though that every year, old notes and coins are found in the most clichéd of places: in stud partitions, under floor boards, in attics, hidden between pages of books or stuffed into vases. Perhaps Irish businesses could succeed where the banks have not by copying some of the marketing schemes thought up by some large German retail chains: The fashion retailer C&A never stopped accepting the Deutschmark as legal tender. Since introduction of the euro in 2002, German C&A customers have spent more than 50 million Deutschmark (circa €25 million) in the country’s more than 500 branches, perhaps knowing that C&A will ask no questions as to the provenance of the bank notes. Similarly, in October 2015, German department store chain Karstadt celebrated its 25th anniversary by accepting Deutschmark in exchange for store vouchers. In January 2016, German grocery giant Kaufland’s more than 640 branches ran a promotion during which they accepted the old German currency, with enormous success. One does not need to take advantage of the nostalgia many Europeans may still feel for their old currencies. Perhaps it would suffice to facilitate those who still own old Irish currency and don’t want to go through the trouble of exchanging notes at the Central Bank. In the traditionally lean business months of January and February, put your famed Irish imagination to work – you never know what you might come up with. There’s €230 odd million out there for the taking...

2017

At the start of this New Year I want to wish everyone a healthy and happy and successful 2017. I want to thank all of my loyal friends and supporters who have helped me so much not just over the last year but over many years, to all of you I will be eternally grateful. My view on politics is that you are there to be a servant to all of the people you represent and I really appreciate the opportunity to represent you locally and nationally.

Aidan O Mahony –Dancing with the Stars

Everyone in County Kerry is extremely proud of Aidan O Mahony in his endeavors so far in Dancing with the Stars. Voting has now opened up and I would encourage everyone to vote for Aidan to keep him in the competition. Aidan has served our County so well in that last number of years and now his deserves our support again. It is great to see the Kerry flag flying by Aidan in RTE.

Lauragh & Tuosist

congregated settings and that everyone should be integrated into the community. I am totally opposed to this because while I readily agree that there are people who have difficulties but who are perfectly able to integrate and live in the community, other people however need the special care and services that can only be given in a place like St Mary of the Angels. St Mary of the Angels have given excellent service back over the years, service users and their families are very grateful for the care and help that they have received however if new young couples who have child who would need this service in the future it will not be available to them unless the policy changes. That is what I am trying to do in Dublin and what I am pressing with Minister Mc Grath, because if St Mary of the Angels keeps going the way it is at present it will close by stealth. St Marys is also very important when it comes to giving respite for people and again services will decline if people are not moving into the Centre, to lose St Mary of the Angels as we know it would be a massive loss to the County of Kerry and I will not be found wanting with regard to this matter

Radio Kerry recently played a great program from the mighty parishes of Lauragh, Tuosist and surrounding areas where they interviewed many great local characters, visited the excellent schools and had entertainment provided by the school children. They also gave a great insight into the history and the heritage of these areas. It was extremely interesting and very well put together.

Minister Finnian McGraths visit to Kerry

I was glad that the Minister fulfilled his promise to me since before Christmas whereby he visited the County on Wednesday the 10th Jan where he officially opened the Employability Kerry new premises in Rock St Tralee, visited the Cara centre in the IT campus Tralee, officially opened the Down syndrome Kerry’s new Centre in Balloonagh Estate in Tralee and very importantly visited St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort. Previous to his visit the long term care of residents who are presently in St Marys is secure, what is in doubt however is the future of this what I would call a centre of excellence for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, quiet simply because they have stopped taking in new residents who need to avail of their services. This is going back to a policy decision that was taken in June 2011 whereby it was decided that there should no longer be any

Young local dancers perform live in Disneyland, Paris! Dreams became reality this Christmas for 30 talented local children from 7 to 17 years of age as, accompanied by proud parents and mentor Bernie O'Sullivan, they boarded a flight to Disneyland Paris. The Bernie O'Sullivan School of Irish Dancing troupe were chosen from vast competition to perform LIVE on stage in front of a huge multi-national audience in Disneyland Paris' Videopolis Theatre. Their performance, which took many months of hard work, dedication and determination was thoroughly enjoyed and much applauded by the theatre's delighted audience, so much so that Disney management have already invited the team back to perform again in 2017! A wonderful few days was enjoyed in the park by young and old alike and, after much fun, frolics, hot chocolates and adrenaline fuelled roller coasters, the team are already making plans to ensure their next trip will be another roaring success

She has completed courses run by the Mindfulness In Schools Project (MISP) in Dublin and London. She now introduces mindfulness into schools. What is Yoga? Yoga is a physical science which gives us increased flexibility and strength, curing, relieving or preventing injuries, aches and pains and stiffness. Research shows that ageing is directly related to the stiffness of the spine. The more flexible the spine is the slower the ageing process. You don’t have to be flexible to do Yoga. A regular practice improves posture, breathing and detoxifies the body. Yoga is also a mental science, fitness training for the mind .It is a Mindfulness practice. What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds, with kindness and acceptance. Rather than worrying about what has happened or might happen, it trains us to explore and respond skilfully, rather than react, to whatever is happening right now, whether we like it or not. Neuroscience has made compelling discoveries about the brain’s capacity to grow and change, throughout life. Research at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University has shown, using MRI brain scanning technology that eight weeks of MBSR training leads to the thickening of a number of different regions of the brain associated with learning, memory, and emotion regulation. They also found that areas associated with stress and anxiety were thinner after the eight week course. Darina offers 8-week courses to adults, where the focus is on experiential learning in a small group setting. (12 max) Participants have shared how the course has positively impacted their lives. Testimonials can be seen on my website. Yoga and Mindfulness lead to a greater understanding of the body and mind empowering us to connect to peace of mind and inner freedom.

Happy New Year everyone ! Another year over, another begun !….Hope you all had a good mid-winter break and are now raring to get out into the garden again and try and tidy the place up. Good exercise for the body and therapy for the mind ! There are leaves, twigs and branches on the ground, on the lawn, on flower beds and on paths and driveways that all need raking, sweeping and picking up. Damaged and leaning trees and bushes need to be pruned into shape and staked up again to prevent them from rocking in the ground. Don’t do too much walking across the lawn at the moment as it is fairly soggy ! you will do a lot of damage and create a muddy mess by going to and fro too much. Best to leave until it dries out a bit more. No rush !

1. Tidy up the garden whenever you can as mentioned above and take a check on the gutters around the house. …a spring blitz ! 2. The small branches and twigs from your xmas tree can be used as a mulch on ericaceous shrubs like Rhododendron and Camellias. Cut the side branches of the tree into small sections and toss underneath the bushes where they will slowly breakdown and feed the shrubs. The remaining trunk of the xmas tree can be cut up for firewood. 3. Prune back summer flowering shrubs so that new growth in the spring can start from strong sturdy branches. Spring flowering bushes have to be pruned immediately after flowering. Don’t cut them now or you will be cutting off their flowers ! 4. If you are interested in planting a hedge

January in the Garden the WILLOWFIELD WAY

anywhere in the garden, the next 6 weeks is the best time of the year to do this work. A lot of the planting material is field grown rather than container grown which makes them cheaper. Planting up at this time of year is also ideal for quick establishment. 5. Patio containers can be planted up now with a mixture of winter heathers and spring flowering bulbs. Both are strong enough to put up with all the bad winter weather. Primroses and Violas can be added soon when the worst of the winter weather has gone. 6. During February you can start repotting House plants as they will all start making a surge of growth as the light levels and temperature start increasing. Do not repot into too big a pot; just choose a new pot with a diameter just a couple of cm bigger than the existing one…let it grow into this area first and repot again during the summer. 7. The vege garden is practically off limits at the moment and is just a soggy mess ! if you can

get to it over the next couple of weeks, throw on some seaweed or rotten manure so it has a chance to breakdown over what’s left of the winter and early spring. 8. If you are lucky enough to have a polythene tunnel or some area that is protected from the winter weather you can start preparing the ground for the spring. Fertilize the ground and dig it in leaving it fairly rough for the next couple of weeks so that air can get into the soil. It is possible to start off a few seed trays of vegetables by the end of the month and seed potatoes will be ready to start ‘chitting’ ready for planting in early March. Don’t be in too much of a rush to get things started, still very early and a lot of bad weather is still to come ! The early bird doesn’t always get the worm….could often get his feet scorched by frost ! 9. While it is quiet in the garden it is a good time to get your garden equipment serviced…spark plugs, filters, oil change etc should all be seen to so when they are needed in a few weeks’ time they will be all tuned up and ready to go. 10.Garden furniture should be kept inside and dried out as much as possible and treated with paint or coloured stain before it ventures out again in March or April. From the beginning of February out at Willowfield our stocks of trees, shrubs, fruit and flowering plants will be increasing ready for another busy planting season so drop in to us and see what we are getting in each week. See you there ! Happy Gardening !

Sixteen year old Kilgarvan girl Christine McCarthy, a Pobal Scoil Inbhear Sceine student is an upcoming athlete with great potential and promise. From a very young age Christine has been competing in Community Games, winning District, County and National medals. One of her finest National Community Games medals was in Art. Christine also has an All Ireland Community Games gold relay medal. However, it is Track and Field disciplines of High Jump and Long Jump that Christine has excelled in. Being successful in the Kerry underage Championships and School Championships Christine last year won the Munster U15 High Jump Championship and this year placed 2nd in the U16 with a best height of 1.60m. This year Christine won a bronze medal in the All Ireland AAI U16 indoor High Jump which was held at Carlow Institute of Technology. Christine also excels at long jump winning Kerry and Munster Schools Championship medals. Christine’s success at this level has advanced her on to the Munster Elite Squad training sessions which take place regularly at C.I.T. Cork.

John O'Shea from Letter, Moll's Gap, recently ran a fundraiser in New York to help fund the new Centre of Excellence currently being built by Kerry GAA at Currans, near Kerry Airport. John is pictured presenting a cheque for $53,000 to Patrick O'Sullivan, Chairman Kerry County Board during the Kerry teams recent trip to the Big Apple. Also pictured are Jim Mackessy from Tarbert, treasurer of the event, Eamon Fitzmaurice, Kerry Senior Manager and Gerry O'Shea, originally from the Lauragh area who was also a member of the committee. John was especially proud to have three local boys there on the night with the team; Templenoe's Tadhg Morley and Gavin Crowley, as well as Kenmare's Stephen O'Brien. John and his committee are anxiously awaiting the completion of the new 48 acre training facility at Currans and are hopeful that their contribution will help towards getting it up and running sometime in 2017.

This month the club is entering into 4 Galas. The first gala is on in The University of Limerick on the 14th/15th, we have a lot of first time swimmers entering this and they are all very excited. On the 21st /22nd we are off to Blackpool in Cork for the novice gala. On the same weekend, the Gerry Ryan Gala is on at the University of Limerick. The forth gala is in Tralee for grade 1 on the 28th of January. There is lots of excitement in the club in anticipation of the galas. The Kenmare Bay leisure Centre kindly facilitated extra training session which ran over 4 day, to help burn off all those Christmas sweets and prepare for the January galas. Best of luck to all our swimmers. Health benefits of swimming. Swimming is a great workout because you need to move your whole body against the resistance of the water. Swimming is a good all-round activity because it: • keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body • builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness • helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs • tones muscles and builds strength • provides an all-over body workout, as nearly all of your muscles are used during swimming. • being a relaxing and peaceful form of exercise • alleviating stress • improving coordination, balance and posture • improving flexibility • providing good lowimpact therapy for some injuries and conditions

St. Stephen’s Day kick around.

St. Stephen’s Day was the first of our hopefully annual kick around for charity. Over 40 lads and ladies turned out to play in a four team tournament which was played at a very high standard. This year St. Vincent de Paul was our chosen charity and we are delighted to have raised over €400.

Congratulations to our Christmas indoor 5a-side winners

Inter Kenmare Girls U12 team that beat Camp 2-1. Scorers for Inter were Chloe Cremin and Helena Donaghue.

Christmas Cheer with new Inter gear.

Inter Kenmare are delighted to announce that Kenmare Bay Hotel and Resort have come on board as sponsor for the Inter Kenmare Bay

Academy for the 2016/2017 season. The Kenmare Bay Hotel and Resort are official sponsors for the Academy for this season, and hopefully a long time to come. This is a superb sponsorship package for the club, and means that the Inter Kenmare Bay Academy will be a huge success this season. The Inter Kenmare Academy has more than 120 members, boys and girls from the ages of 5 to 9.

The academy is the foundation of the Inter Kenmare FC club, and is an introduction to football for boys and girls from the age of 5 upwards. The first generation of Inter Academy players have recently graduated to senior football on both mens and ladies teams. Coaching has been going on every Wednesday, with 15 qualified coaches running sessions for groups from age 5 to 9. Having the Kenmare Bay Hotel and Resort on board for the season has meant that all players have been kitted out in stylish training tops and beanie hats. Coaches have had official FAI “Kickstart” training and new training equipment has been put in place. Mark Granville on behalf of Inter Kenmare said “Having a sponsor from the start of the season has been brilliant. We have been able to plan ahead for the year, and the academy has more numbers than ever. Andre Rees, Manager of the Kenmare Bay Hotel and Resort, “We are delighted to sponsor Inter Kenmare FC, and look forward to great success for the teams in 2017. We would like to wish a happy and prosperous New Year to everyone.

Credit Union Car Loan v Personal Contract Plan

34 | Kenmare News

PCP balloon payment looming? Maybe it’s time to burst that balloon.

2017 is set to be a bumper year for car sales with 45% of Irish consumers intending on buying*. It is also the year when a number of first round Personal Contract Plans (PCPs) are ending. Many will simply opt to roll-on their existing PCPs to finance the purchase of a new car. Others will face a final payment, known as a balloon payment, to buy out of the contract. Consumers considering rolling up should read all the small print, and they may find it’s time to burst that particular balloon. Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer, for Killarney Credit Union says, ‘Headline rates on some car finance deals such as PCPs can easily distract from a range of additional charges, and a great deal of inflexibility. With a personal car loan from Killarney Credit Union, you own the car from the outset. If you run into difficulty, you can talk to us about adjusting the repayment schedule and if you are in the happy position of being able to repay the loan early, you can do so without any complications or rescheduling fees." PCPs are among the least flexible forms of finance. Essentially they are lease schemes which makes financing a new car seem affordable due to low monthly repayments. You have, in effect, hired the car for a particular period of time, usually 3-5 years, while you make these repayments. At the end of the agreement, you will have to make the balloon payment in order to own the car. In addition, you need to be conscious of the mileage you are racking up on the car, because the balloon payment, or guaranteed minimum future value (GMFV), of the car will have been calculated with your annual mileage in mind. Crucially, with a PCP you are also restricted with what you do while you are still ‘hiring’ the car. Should your financial circumstances change and you find you can no longer afford the monthly repayments, you cannot sell off the car to pay your debt, as it is not yours to sell. In contrast, with a personal loan from a credit union the consumer simply borrows the money to pay for a car, which they own immediately, and which they can drive as much as they please, and sell on at any time they wish. PCPs can set up a situation where the easiest and simplest option is to roll over into a new car - and a new plan. PCPs are effectively a way of trying to ensure that you will come back and buy another car from the same dealer or manufacturer. All well and good, but what if you don’t like the brand of car or they range they have to offer any more? Helen continued “If you arrange finance with Killarney Credit Union before going shopping for a car, you are in a much stronger position. You are effectively going as a cash buyer to the car dealer, and may well be able to

negotiate a better deal. We also offer car insurance, through the credit union insurance website coveru.ie or Axa Insurance. So if you’re thinking about bursting that balloon payment,

you should consider Killarney Credit Union.” Some things to consider before signing a PCP • To extend the term of a PCP you may be charged a rescheduling fee. • Take note of the cap on the number of miles/kilometres you are allowed to clock up over the period of the contract. • You may be requested to commit to certain car servicing agreements. • Ensure you always enquire about additional fees and charges, you are entitled to a list of all additional charges so ask the garage for this before you sign any agreement.
