Welcome to The Rings for round 14 of the NBL1 South season as the Hawks play host to the Frankston Blues. The Blues are 4-14 on the season and sit 15th on the NBL1 South Women’s ladder after 13 rounds. The Blues come into this game looking to find some winning form against the Hawks and are led by stars Darcee Garbin who is currently averaging 23.16 ppg, 9.91 rpg, 3.08 apg, 2.00 spg and 1 bpg and Tessa Lavey who is averaging 12.25 ppg, 6.16 rpg, 4.66 apg and 1.58 spg. The Hawks come into this game having won six in a row, including back to back games last week.
The first was a 12-point win against the Dandenong Rangers (58-70). The Hawks were led by Digna Strautmane who had 22 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks, Marta Hermida who had 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and Toni Farnworth who had 12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block. The second win came against the Sandringham Sabres (102-61). In this game, the Hawks were led by Digna Strautmane who had 28 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a block, Zoe Jenkins who had 24 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists, Jacqui Trotto who had 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks, Danni Allen who had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals, Toni Farnworth who had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal and Marta Hermida who had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 17 assists and 2 steals. Welcome to Round 14 of NBL1 South Men’s Basketball and tonight we welcome the 6th placed Frankston Blues. The Blues are clearly one of the most talented teams in the League with NBL quality talent all over the court. The teams leading scorer is the aggressive Lachlan Barker (21ppg) who played his way on to SEM Phoenix and ended up playing a major role last season. Dillon Stith is well known to Hawks fans for his ability at both ends of the court and new import Adrio Barkley has been a nice pick up for the Blues as well. Rugged lefty point guard Lucas Barker is another who plays both ends of the court and sets the tone for his team as does Dan Trist who would be a starter on most teams but is now a huge luxury coming off the bench. Veteran Igor Hadziomerovic is in great form and nailed an impressive 25 last week against Knox but the Blues also have the dangerous Alister MacDonald coming off the bench and providing instant scoring with his scoring mentality.
Last weekend for the Hawks needs to be forgotten but for a team that is still on the play off bubble, tonight’s game is now incredible important. Tim Guers was terrific in both games last week but he will need more help especially from the Hawks Big’s who were unusually quiet. Emmett Naar has been a consistent player since joining the Hawks and Jack Roberts has continued to improve as the season has moved on. The Blues are a fast, high scoring team so the Hawks are going to have to be ready to match it right from the tip off. There is no doubt that this game will be entertaining as both teams have too much on the line not to bring 100% effort which is what it will take to get a win. It’s a special night for another reason as we go back 10 years and celebrate the Hawks 2012 State Championship. We hope to have 10 of the 12 players in attendance tonight with just Americans Sam Belt and Skyler Bowlin unable to attend. We will be making a special presentation to the Players and Coaches right before the tip off of tonight’s game. Welcome back guys, we hope you have a great night remembering the Clubs second State Championship.

*The Aussie Boomers took care of business last weekend with a Gold Medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta. The Aussies beat Lebanon in the gold medal game by 2 in a classic finish. Thon Maker and Mitch McCarron were voted to the Allstar 5 team and NBL1 star David Okwera had a great first National team experience. Tohi Smith-Milner (NBL1 player) led New Zealand to the bronze medal with a 25 point game in their final game. *Despite the weekend from hell the Hawks men endured last week, the closeness of the NBL1 South conference means the Hawks are still in play off contention. There is very little wriggle room though, the Hawks must win at least 3 of their last 4 games to have a shot at post season play. *Marena Whittle and her Commonwealth Games 3X3 team have started their journey for a medal. The girls played Scotland yesterday and tomorrow will face Sri Lanka. Both games the Aussies will go in as favourites. All going well, Whittle will be back for the Hawks double header next weekend.
The Hawks were stinging from a few Grand Final losses in 2009 and 2010 but with the inclusion of 2 great imports in Sam Belt and Skyler Bowlin and also former NBL talent Adrien Sturt, 2012 would be different. The only Hawks Championship was back in 1999 and the pressure was building on the Club to get themselves another Ring, it was not spoken about but it was real.
The team started well whist they awaited the arrival of Bowlin from Europe winning their first 4 games but once he arrived the Hawks went to on a 3 game losing streak. (Bowlin was a late replacement for Daryl Corletto who decided not to join the team right before the season started.) Once Bowlin settled in though, the Hawks went to a level that no other Big V team could match. Matt Snow and Willie Weimer were both playing well and young Shaun Clarke was making an impact. There was depth on the bench too with Max Sutton, Michael Stellar, Chris Flack, Zac Haig and veteran Forward Mark Whitehead but the X factor for the Hawks was the recruitment of veteran Luke Egan who always had an impact , especially in big games. He also provided energy and enthusiasm amongst the team.
With the team coming together they won their last 13 regular season games and went to a semi Final series against a dangerous Corio Bat Stingrays. In the best of 3 series, the Hawks played game 1 at Corio and handled business with a 7 point win and then came back to the Rings to close the series out with a 21 point win in a high scoring game (103 to 82). Sturt nailed 28 points while Bowlin , Belt and Weimer scored 20,19 and 17 respectively. The Hawks had now made their 3rd Grand Final in 4 years and faced the Eltham Wildcats in the Best of 3 Grand Final series. Game one was at Eltham and a massive and unwelcoming crowd was waiting for the Hawks. The Wildcats boasted scoring machine Cameran Tragardh (Leading scorer in the NBL) and now Hawks star Matt Fennell but the Hawks were ready to go. Despite a quick start the Hawks fell behind at half time and looked to be in trouble but Bowlin, Sturt and Matt Snow turned on a classy third quarter to lead by 6 after 3 quarters of battle. Credit a great defensive effort with the Hawks holding the Wildcats to just 61 for a 9 point win. Game two would end up being a classic. Once again Ringwood fell behind at half time and looked vulnerable but with a Championship on the line the Hawks chipped away. Sturt (25 points) and Bowlin (24 points) caught fire early in the last quarter and got the Hawks back to within a few points. The rest was left to two Hawks legends to get the team over the line. The 700 in attendance will forever remember the steal from Captain Willie Weimer in crunch time and then the three point dagger from Matt Snow to close out the Clubs second State Championship. This win was the teams 17th in a row, this team will go down as one of the greatest in all Big V history. Skyler Bowlin was awarded the Grand Final Most Valuable Player for his work at both ends of the floor but Sturt would have also been a worthy winner. The Coaching Staff of the 2012 Hawks was Ken Harrington, Damien Smith, Michael Beer and the Team Manager was Luke Brodie.
POST GRAND FINAL QUOTES 2012 “It was no time to panic. We just needed to increase the tempo of the game and grind them down. Seven down is Ok, we are explosive and can score in a hurry.” Hawks Coach Ken Harrington when his team slipped behind 46 to 39.
“I am so grateful for Kenny bringing me here, I have absolutely loved it and I want to come back nest year if they will have me.” Hawks import Skyler Bowlin who a week later decided not to come back.
“We were not going to walk off the court without pouring our heart and soul in to every possession. This Championship is sweet as we had to earn every inch it.” Matt Snow on ending the Championship drought.
The Eastland Ringwood Hawks Schools and Community Program is back in 2022.
