Welcome to the Trail The Kemptown Arts Trail extends from the iconic Royal Pavilion to the grandeur of Lewes Crescent, just over a mile away. In between lie a delightful landscaped park and a fascinating variety of houses, flats, shops, cafés and pubs. For every weekend in May and in some cases weekdays too, twenty-two of these have been transformed into Artists Open Houses showing an incredible range of art and craft. To those who live here, Kemptown is variety, creativity and openness. So we invite you to share our trail. This is the first time we’ve produced a fully illustrated trail brochure. It has a two-page spread on each Open House detailing what’s on show. There’s also a map at the back. It doesn’t matter if you start with the low numbered Open Houses and work up, or walk the trail in the other direction, the point is that they’re all worth a visit, as you can see. If your legs begin to tire, many of our Open Houses serve refreshments. We also have some of the best cafés, bars and restaurants in the city. Many of them are our supporters and you’ll see their names here too. And while you’re resting, have a look at the articles we’ve included about the buildings and people who have left their mark on Kemptown and our imagination. Kemptown Arts Trail A Personal History Back in 1996 I was creating colourful ceramics with a wheel and a top-loading kiln squeezed into an old-fashioned walk-in larder in our house in Kemptown. I wanted to show my work but didn’t know where to start. ‘5 at Fiveways’ artists trail had been running for a few years, but at that time the idea of opening up your house was quite a novelty. I thought if I could get a few people together we could do something similar in Kemptown. There were already a few individual houses opening to show work in the area. I wrote a letter to drop through the doors of houses that I knew had opened to show their work the previous May. I asked would they be interested in forming a Kemptown artists trail? The outcome was a small black & white leaflet featuring 7 artists houses and the Kemptown Arts Trail was formed. In 1999 the leaflet was in full-colour. By 2000 we had 27 venues in locations from Rock Gardens to Arundel Road and the Queen’s Park area, up to St Luke’s Terrace and Freshfield Street. The trail is now organised by the Kemptown Arts Association which is a group of artists including some of those people, such as Janice Farrar (see pages 20-21) and myself who have been involved from the beginning. Since 1996 the many individual trails around the city - each with their own history and character - have joined forces under the umbrella of AOH ‘Artists Open Houses’ which now promote around 200 venues every year! Jane Hawkins Jane will be exhibiting in ‘At the Coach House’ at 22 Walpole Rd. 5

A compelling photographic project by Tony Tree which documents the many diverse faith communities in Brighton and Hove. Recently updated, we are delighted to feature this as our exhibition this year. Alongside the photography we have invited poetry submitted on the theme “An Inclusive City”. On 20th May we have a workshop (poems in advance - booking essential) led by Janina Karpinska (MA in Creative Writing, first prize in the Cannon Open. Sophie Wake has worked as a professional artist and illustrator for over 20 years. Her latest work inquires into the nature of reality through the eyes and expressions of her creatures. Beasts & Beings; what is ‘seeing’, who is ‘seen’, and where is the ‘seer’? Lee Needham’s work explores ‘journeys’. Sequences of landscapes follow pathways through nature, and abstract paintings describe the dynamics of people moving through the urban environment. 11am - 5pm 13 14 20 21 27 28 29 OPENING DAYS

All four artists exhibiting here are responding to nature. Where they differ, from each other and from many others working today, is in what they mean by ‘nature’. Nick Philo and Ian Boutell have their eyes on the new reality of sub-atomic particles and an ever expanding cosmos. We now know that space, long of interest to artists, is a flexible field created by the interaction of matter. Nick uses paint on paper, canvas and mirrored surfaces, to show how the spread and flow of paint itself reflect the laws of nature. Ian works with paint and Perspex to show how matter and space, light and energy interrelate. Maggie Philo and Michael Hutley show us something of the human in the new nature. Maggie reminds us that we know nature through surface and that it is surface decoration and defacement that record human experience and time. Her paintings are based on photographs of walls, terrain and other surfaces. She layers egg tempera and pigment on traditional gesso to embody the way the original surface developed over time. Michael’s starting point is the environment including the human form. He is showing paintings, drawings and bronze sculpture that rework nature into art that both stands on its own and maintains a dialogue with its viewer and creator. Refreshments

Trail’s End is back for its 4th round of May madness, and is very pleased to be welcoming old friends and new... 3 of our artists live at number 5 (well, William De Belleroche used to! Willie was notorious in Brighton, a newsworthy character who threw legendary parties. Trawling the archives, it’s tempting to become diverted by the proliferation of snippets from local and London papers (usually concluding on a classy one-liner gifted by Willie), documenting

But there is also a wealth of information about Willie’s serious contribution to the c.20th art scene. His famous family is well documented - as is his 26 year friendship and collaboration with Frank Brangwyn (Willie wrote 3 books about him and collected hundreds of his works); his monumental efforts as Art Director for the Forces during WW2; his decoration by King Leopold of Belgium for his founding of the Brangwyn Museum in Bruges. A pile of correspondence, writing and articles describes his great friendship with Augustus John. And while there is delighted coverage of Willie’s exhibition held at Pruniers restaurant in London, (after which Willie became known as ‘Brighton’s Fish and Chip Artist’), there is little serious critique of Willie’s work. Perhaps this was intentional - Willie shared a reticence with his father (the impressionist painter and lithographer Albert De Belleroche) to promote his own work, about which he was deeply private. But in 1939, ‘VMM’, writing in the Sussex Daily News, could have been describing the then 25 year old Willie’s woodcuts when he wrote: “it seems he has put his finger for a moment on the flowing rhythm of life itself and has diverted that rhythm into his own pictures.”

the more gossip-worthy details of William De Belleroche’s extraordinary life.

William De Belleroche in his studio, Rustington Manor, 1930s

by Hannah Butters

There’s a lurking quiet about 5 Arundel Terrace, like a conspiratorial wink; a sense that things might happen, and that a lot already has. This is undoubtedly the lingering Bohemian influence of Count William De Belleroche (Willie), who bought the house in 1957, and lived, wrote, painted, entertained and collected here until he died aged only 56 in 1969. Gordon Anderson, who lived here with Willie from 1957 Gordon Anderson 2016 (“the best and most loyal friend I have ever had” - W de B) inherited the house in 1969, and has been here ever since. He is, in no small part, responsible for the preservation of the house’s unique character. Willie’s restlessly prolific paintings (of vegetables, fish, flowers, cats, sea shells, cheese) still cover the walls of No.5.

Alice in Kemptown Did Lewis Carroll’s visits to Kemptown inspire the introduction of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ ? In the period between 1874 - 1887, Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Dodgson) often stayed with his friend the Rev. Henry Barclay at his house at 11 Sussex Square in Brighton. The Regency Society has put up a plaque to commemorate these visits. The beautiful Regency architecture of Sussex Square and its surrounding crescent and terraces enclose gardens called ‘The Kemp Town Enclosures’. At the southern end of the gardens there is a tunnel, partly concealed by trees and shrubs, which leads to a wide terrace with imposing views of the seafront. It is considered by many people in Brighton that this tunnel was Carroll’s inspiration for the rabbit hole which Alice fell down at the beginning of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. Oxford scholars reject the Brightonian view and consider that the ‘Rabbit Hole’ may have been a flight of stairs in Christ Church College’s Hall — in Oxford. We can’t be certain. Carroll’s diaries were lost after his death. Anyone who has read the book and has walked through the tunnel to the seafront cannot help but imagine the haunting presence of the White Rabbit as Carroll himself may have done all those years ago. On a fine day it is even possible, if we were to look “Through the Looking-Glass”, to see the Walrus and the Carpenter savouring their oyster feast on the beach below. Derek Henry 53

Kemptown Arts Trail

“The rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and, burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge. In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again. The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down what seemed to be a very deep well.” By Lewis Carroll from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

I-Spy Kemptown What can you spot?

Kemptown stretches itself towards the east, along the coast, away from the gaudy lights of Brighton Pier. Taking its name from the early 19th century Kemp Town Estate, with its fine Georgian architecture and imposing residences, Kemptown is known as Brighton’s bohemian district. It is home to many artists and actors as well as to a sizeable gay community.

St George’s Church Kemptown’s Neoclassical Gem

St. George’s Church stands, in all its elegant, neoclassical simplicity, right in the heart of Kemptown. Outwardly it has a simple box-like form, with the exterior in warm yellow brick punctuated by regularly spaced circle arched windows with a deep undecorated stucco cornice. The centrally placed entrance on the western face, reminiscent of a Greek or Roman temple, is flanked by ionic columns and pilasters on each side. A white stucco, central tower rises above the entrance, topped by a cupola and a small cross. Each tower face has a clock marking out the time.

a restrained, orderly design with pale transparent colours around the edge and a clear glass centre. A chancel occupies the eastern end; a larger Victorian stained glass window in the high wall gives even more light. The large painted cross with Christ crucified is suspended over the altar. The organ is under the south gallery, and both the north and the south galleries align harmoniously with the chancel. Two steeply curving staircases, rising from the left and right entrance halls, arch inwards and give access to the galleries on the north, south and western sides. Simple fixed wooden pews define the curve of the galleries and further slim white columns rise up to the blue painted, wooden, barrel vaulted ceiling.

What is an Original Digital Print?

An insight into a relatively new art-form. It is often confusing to know what is considered to be an original print. The originality of a handmade print produced by traditional methods is easy to recognise. Artists will usually produce work in numbered, limited editions. Handmade prints, because they are generally made from some sort of plate, screen, block or stone are all originals. The first prints made are more desirable because eventually the plate, screen, block or stone wears out. However, more artists are experimenting with digital technologies using programs such as Photoshop, and the resulting prints are also considered as originals, because they have only ever existed in this medium. (If the print is made by photographing or scanning a painting or another print it is a reproduction. Reproduction prints are therefore much cheaper to buy.) In theory the first digital print is exactly the same as the last print of an edition (unlike the handmade print.)

59

Kemptown Arts Trail

An important thing to establish when considering digital prints is the chemical make up of the printing ink. Most prints made with dye based ink are not archival quality and can be susceptible to fading. Digital prints made with pigment based inks have particles large enough to embed into the receiving paper substrate making them water and fade resistant. The particulate nature of pigment inks ensures their archival superiority. The term ‘Giclée’ has become a generic term for a high quality digital print (borrowed from the French word to squirt) but there are no industry standard. So when buying a digital print it’s important to check that acid free archival quality paper is used, along with pigment inks to guarantee the longevity of the image. As the genre of digital art and photography gains acceptance in the art world, many artists are turning to digital prints to manifest their work. This market is growing rapidly because of the elevated quality of digital pigment prints. As a result, the original digital print is now a definitive fine art medium. If you are considering buying an original digital print and aren’t sure exactly what it is, then do talk to the artist who will be pleased to help.
