What is a Chanticleer? A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

In his first year at the helm, Jacobs guided the Chanticleer track and field team to a runner-up finish in the Big South Championships as 11 athletes had All-Conference finishes, including three conference champions. Three athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships, and two advanced to the NCAA National Championships, including Mark Johnson in the pole vault, who became first All-American in program history.
