Student Life Shaking up the Holidays Written by: Anna Donaldson Christmas is always a very magical time of the year, filled with joy and happiness. Knowing this, every family has their own way of celebrating the holiday. Most have holiday traditions that they do each year, like decorating Christmas cookies or roasting marshmallows by the fire, but some families have more unique traditions that you don’t hear of very often. To get a bit more inside of what those unique traditions are, students from around the school shared how they uniquely celebrate the holiday. Cole Welch, a senior, shared, “Usually, my aunts will come up with fun games to play like a scavenger hunt or a riddle with puzzles and problem solving, and the whole family will play.” He then shared that every year his family plays the games at someone else's house and that they pick a theme, like the Grinch or ugly sweaters. This tradition seems like a lot of fun and something that brings the family closer together on the holiday. Cole also told us that the tradition has been going on for around 20 years and that he plans to keep up with it when he is an adult. “I love the tradition and think it is a lot of fun. I would also like to start a tradition of my own someday, but I'm not sure what that would be yet.” Having this tradition is a wonderful thing for his family because it’s something that can be passed down through generations and still be a ton of fun.

Another student, junior Andrew King, shared that he is Italian and every year they celebrate by having a 7 fish dinner, which includes salmon, cod, grouper, clam, crab and more! “I enjoy the tradition because of the history behind it, where my ancestors had to go and catch their food from the sea,” Andrew gladly shared. If you enjoy seafood, this tradition is one that you and your family could try out. Andrew also explained that he has been doing this tradition ever since he can remember, mostly because tradition has been going on for decades. “I would love to start a tradition of my own, kind of like the 7 fish dinner, but have a different theme each year like Mexican or Chinese.” If you're one to mix it up a bit this one could definitely be a ton of fun, and something you could try out as well. This Christmas season with everything that is going on can be a bit stressful. With that in mind, you can enjoy your time and have as much fun with your family as possible. Hopefully after reading this you can also be inspired to start some new traditions this holiday season and do something that you can look back on and remember what an exciting time you had. Who knows, maybe you'll start a tradition that will be passed down through your family for decades to come!
