The latest results from Britain’s biggest event for shore match anglers

ABERDEEN THISTLE OPEN Aberdeen, 19 anglers ■ Result: 1Mike Horn Kirkcaldy 6.7kg (1); 2 Chris Horn, Kirkcaldy 4.1kg; 3 Mark Summers, 4kg. Heaviest fi sh, Scott Patterson, 1.5kg.

FOUNTAIN OPEN Hythe beaches, 91 anglers Strong winds and at times driving rain greeted the 91 anglers as they set up in readiness for the match. Thankfully conditions eased through the day, and with plenty of whiting and dogfi sh along with thornbacks, dabs pout and rockling showing right from the fi rst cast. Anglers who had travelled from across the country were set for a good day. Result: 1 Jimmy Price, Abergele (9), 827 points; 2 Joe Wales Shoreham (8), 701 points; 3 Saul Page, Deal, 618 points (7). Zone winners were Richard Yates, St Margret’s Bay, 533 points (3) and Mark Rogers Maidstone, 597 points, (3). Biggest fi sh on the day was a ray of 215 points landed by Liam McGrady (Not registered). HASTINGS & ST LEONARDS AA TEAMS & OPEN Sussex, 37 anglers ■ Result:: 1 Neil Marsh Herne Bay, 18 fi sh 9lb 6oz (3); 2 Julian French Brighton, 16 fi sh, 8lb 15oz; 3 Tom Ryder, Worthing, 13 fi sh, 8lb 13oz (2). Zone winners: Mark Rogers Maidstone, 12 fi sh 5lb 5oz (2); Sam Collier, Deal, 13 fi sh, 8lb 9oz (2).

REMINDER Penn Sea League entries will only be accepted from the match organiser or officials of the club concerned at least eight weeks in advance. If results are not returned to Sea Angler within a month of the event, the event will be declared void for Penn points.

NORTH WALES 5 MATCH SERIES, ROUND 3 Pensarn Beach, 72 Anglers ■ Result: 1 Ben Price Haydock 3.61m (7); 2 Shane Russell, Colwyn Bay, 3.59m (6); 3rd Rich Hughes, Anglesey, 2.90m (5). Longest fi sh, Mark Griffi n, Nantwich, 37 cm Flounder (2., Zone winner, Paul Bonner, West Kirby, 2.84m (2).

TRALEE BAY SAC County Kerry, Ireland, Ventry, 30 anglers It was terrifi c fi shing considering as at one time it was possible the event would be cancelled due to the weather. Thankfully the venue was sheltered although gusts of up to 60mph meant it was not a night for the faint of heart. Dogs and Coalies were caught from the off with sandeel and mackerel being the top baits on the day. Paul Whelan led from start to fi nish landing treble after treble to win comfortably almost 1000 points ahead of second place. ■ Result: 1st Paul Whelan, Ballybrack, 37 fi sh 1829pts (3); 2 Ciaran Fogarty, Dunn Brin, 16 fi sh, 800pts (2); 3 Chris O’Sullivan, Tralee, 12 fi sh, 625pts (2), who also landed the biggest fi sh, Bull Huss 100cm. January winner of the Penn prise is; Keith Smith Blyth 30 points

YORKSHIRE FSA WINTER LEAGUE ROUND 6 & OPEN Withernsea, 24 anglers ■ Result:: 1 Adie Cooper, Grimsby, 33 fi sh, 16lb 1oz (2); 2, Lee Smith, Hull, 27 fi sh, 14lb 3/4oz, (1); 3 Simon Drayton, Gainsborough, 32 fi sh, 12lb 1oz.

IRISH WINTER BEACH CHAMPIONSHIPS Country Wexford, 88 anglers The 33rd Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival sponsored by Tronixpro & Inland Fisheries Ireland returned to County Wexford beaches after missing two years due to covid. The 3-day competition saw the 88 competitors divided into 4 zones over three venues: Morriscastle Beach, Clone Strand and Curracloe Strand. ■ Result: 1 Paul Whelan, Ballybrack, (20); 2 Ben Arnold, Brighton, (19); 3 Joe Wales, Shoreham, (18); 4 Bill Lindfi eld, Greasby, (17); 5, and top lady angler, Jane Cantwell (16). Zone winners (3) were Dave Hutchinson, Blackpool; Joe Byrne, (Not registered); David O’Sullivan, Tralee; Paul Tyndall (Not registered); Mike Fox (Not registered); Darren Stevens Bristol (2). Biggest fi sh, 37cm Whiting, Paull Curtice and Chris Isaac (10), Both not registered.

EAST ANGLIA TEAMS OF FIVE AND OPEN, ROUND 4 Sizewell, 67 anglers Round 4 of 6 took place on Sizewell beach, a well-known local winter match venue. Fishing was very patchy, zone anglers found the fi sh easy to come by however sections 2 and 5 were very hard, with only a few fi sh needed to win. ■ Result: 1 Mark Pinder, Ipswich, 19 fi sh, for 3lb 9.5oz (6); 2 Graham Adams, Shotley, 17 fi sh for 3lb 7.5oz (5); 3 Jason Banham, Ipswich, with 18 fi sh for 2lb 14oz (4). Zone winners were: Section 1, Matthew Frost, Woodbridge, with 2lb 8oz; Section ,2, Norman Bickers, Ipswich,1lb 10oz; Section 5, Brayden Aldous, Ipswich, 1lb 9oz, all (2 points). Biggest fi sh, Chris Spall, Westleton, whiting of 33cm (2).

JAMIE RICHARDSON MEMORIAL MATCH Skinning Grove Beck to south pier Bridlington, 166 anglers ■ Result: 1 Phil Arliss, Filey, 5lb 6oz (16); 2 Dave Ireland, Scarborough, 4lb 11oz, (15); 3 Andy Bates, Louth 4lb 2oz (14); 4 Paul Medd, Peterborough, 3lb 3oz (13); 5 Brian Harland, Whitby, 2lb 15oz (Not registered).

WELSH FSA EAST REGION SHORE LEAGUE ROUND 1 & OPEN Aberthaw and Boverton, 81 anglers Fourteen teams fi shed the fi rst leg of the Welsh East Region 2022 Shore League. Weather conditions where perfect for the Bristol Channel. However, in general, it had not been fi shing very well for a number of weeks. On the day, fi shing improved considerably with 64 out 81 anglers catching fi sh totalling 98kg made up of 11 diff erent species as follows; dogfi sh, bull huss, three bearded rockling, shore rockling, pouting, conger eel, blonde, spotted, thornback, small eyed rays and pollock. ■ Result: 1 Lloyd Summer, Caerphilly,7.56kg (8); 2 Shaun Tucker, Neath, 7.5kg (7); 3 Adam Farmer, Penarth, 5.63kg (6). Biggest fi sh went to Shaun Tucker with a blonde ray for 5.07kg. THE AMBLE SAC OPEN Seahouses harbour to Lynemouth Pipe, 487 Anglers Result: 1st K Smith, Blyth, 11lb 6.2oz, (30); 2 Paul Smith, South Shields, 10lb 8.8oz, (29); 3rd P Douglas (Not registered,)10lb 8.6oz; 4 Tony Rutherford, Gateshead, 8lb 13oz (Not registered); 5 David Goward, Amble SAC, 8lb 8oz (Not registered). Biggest fi sh was a cod of 5lb 9.4oz caught by A O’Neill (Not Registered).

SAMALITE CHESIL LEAGUE ROUND 1 OF 12 Abbotsbury, 44 anglers Fishing was patchy with some good bags and others struggling for a bite. Light winds, calm and clear water greeted the 44 anglers fi shing round one. With a bit of cloud cover stopping the temperature from dropping too much conditions were favourable for a decent match. The predominate species caught were; dogfi sh, conger, pout and whiting. ■ Result: 1 Dave Chidzoy, Bridport, 22lb 12oz, 17 dogs, 2 pout. (4); 2 Ben Bradstock, Honiton, 17lb 3oz, 12 dogs, 1 conger (3); 3 Jason Brown, Bridgewater, 14lb 9oz, 10 dogs, 1 pout, 1 whiting (2). Heaviest fi sh, Ben Stockley, conger of 3lb 2oz (2).

HOW IT WORKS

■ With £10,000 in tackle prizes spread over the two divisions, points, based on

entries, are awarded to the top three, section winners and captors of the largest fi sh caught in each designated Penn match. Penn also awards a prize of a Spinfi sher fi xed-spool reel to the angler scoring the most points in matches shown in each issue. If there is a tie, the winner will be the angler whose total is from the greatest number of results and is then chosen on merit by the editor. An angler can win only one reel during the year.
