The IVR have just announced their latest product – a Digital Vehicle Tag. Under their RQM banner, the tag works in much the same way as their digital ID/skills card but with vehicle details instead of the individual. The IVR has listened to the industry and its members and has produced a product with many benefits, all of which you can view on page 6.

Over on page 30, Fred has written a vehicle review. It’s something Fred has thought about for some time and has now had the opportunity. If you have a vehicle yourself that you would like Fred to test drive, then please get in touch.

Our friends at Rydam Universal have given us something a little difference in this issue, a factory tour. The Rydam team visited the Novawinch Factory in China recently and have been kind enough to

RQM® Digital Vehicle Tag

Under the Institute’s RQM (Roadside Quality Management) banner the IVR announced the release of the digital vehicle tag at the IVR AGM.

The RQM vehicle tag works in a similar way to the current RQM digital ID/skills card and holds all compliance documents associated with a particular vehicle safely in one place, digitally and at your fingertips.

The tag can hold any compliance document associated with a vehicle, such as vehicle registration (V5) if required, MOT certificate, LOLER certificate, tachograph calibration certificate, etc. This means paperwork can be kept safely in the office and drivers can be furnished electronically with the certificates they need. No more lost or damaged paperwork with quicker and easier vehicle auditing.

Who will benefit from the RQM digital vehicle tag?

Any staff member who needs to externally verify the credentials of the vehicle they drive. A number of drivers can hold the same tag or more can be added at additional cost. A driver can also be allocated to a vehicle remotely.

Following Ernie’s passing back in April 2020 in the midst of the early stages of the Covid Pandemic, it was not possible for the family to hold a public service to commemorate Ernie.

When a technician presents either the physical or virtual tag for checking, the checker will be able to access its full contents including records and certificates with one tap using a smartphone or any device that can read a QR code.

RED REAR FACING WARNING LAMPS WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?

The call for a safer working environment for all our roadside staff is nothing new, and when you consider it’s an unregulated industry it does a fantastic job managing its best practice, training, and general compliance.

As a standalone industry It manages this in a professional way because it’s an industry that must think in the moment, and with every action it performs from the desktop of the control room, or management decisions about its staff, vehicles, to the operator at the roadside, we are all constantly assessing the risk.

I make no apology for saying this again, today’s recovery industry is forever indebted to those pioneers who, over four decades ago saw the need to create an independent organisation of industry professionals that would focus on safety and training within the recovery sector, yes, the Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR).

Without doubt, those decisions, and the decisions of all those involved in the IVR over the past 40 years has saved countless lives. This very same innovative thinking that sits at the heart of any recovery vehicle manufacturer, and over a similar period the design and engineering minds behind our recovery vehicles, has seen driver and passenger safety at the forefront of any design and decision making.

One of the biggest calls to improve the safety at the roadside for the recovery industry came from the Health and Safety Executive HSE back in 1998/9. In simple terms, after a disastrous year where 6 lives were lost working at the roadside the recovery industry was told, in no uncertain terms, to do something to improve roadside safety.

This brought about the introduction of a safe working of vehicle breakdown, recovery and removal operations

There is no doubt PAS 43 has also saved countless lives and is something the whole industry should be proud of. However today it’s coming under some criticism as it is now approaching its fifth year since its last revision and in a time with generational changes occurring on a daily basis, its only right to question those who are said to manage the process.

As good as the specification has been for the recovery industry there has always been a number of shortfalls. A lowering in standards that gives some independent operators and those work providers with their own branded fleet an opportunity to operate at the lower expectation, this could be considered a watered-down version, and rather than accepting all the specification’s full recommendations and applying the verb ‘shall’, some have chosen the verb ‘should’ instead, and therefore avoiding some recommendations.

It’s safe to say it was those shortfalls within PAS 43 that brought about the highly successful sector scheme NHSS17/17B, and good reason why over the years the recovery industry and several of its main industry contracts have adopted NHSS17/17B as the recovery industry’s minimum operating standard. This is because

it takes PAS 43 in its entirety and removes all ambiguity and for the majority of cases applies the verb ‘Shall’. It also focusses on the quality of the training acceptable to this industry.

Quoted from PAS 43: Its requirements are expressed in sentences in which the principal auxiliary verb is “shall”. Its recommendations, which are not mandatory, are expressed in sentences in which the principal auxiliary verb is “should” or “may”.

Most of that reflects the good work the recovery industry and its peers have done, voluntarily creating a far safer workplace for our roadside staff. The key to that success is ‘voluntarily’, no changes in legislation required, just an industry with a mindset to make its workplace safer.

After all that good work the fact remains the rescue and recovery industry add to the KSI register every year, if you don’t already know what KSI stands for, well its ‘Killed or Seriously Injured’.

Unfortunately, we cannot get an accurate reported number of fatalities or seriously injured roadside workers because the reporting mechanism called stats 19, lists recovery drivers and the public they are serving

as pedestrian casualties if they were not driving at the point of incident. After some campaigning, this is something we are assured will change with the next report, let’s hope the numbers are lower than we think.

Set aside all that good voluntarily work, unless someone can tell me otherwise the recovery industry loses an average of two to three roadside staff every year, counting year-on-year from when the HSE stepped in back in 1999, that’s 24 years, times that by our average and that’s somewhere between 48 and 72 KSI’s directly associated with a roadside recovery worker.

Now you can understand why I have called this edit ‘Red Rear Facing Warning Lamps - What are we waiting for?’.

As the years have passed by, the recovery industry has slowly but surely made its own considerable improvements to safety at the roadside. As we did so, we have called for the additional safety of rear facing red warning lights, something that current legislation precludes our roadside staff from having.

Nobody is saying this is the golden challis and if we had the right to use them then the recovery industry would preclude itself from the KSI register. No what

we are saying is that every single roadside recovery worker should be granted the very same protection as any other worker, even if he or she doesn’t work for a government agency, a National Highways Traffic Officer or a Police Traffic Officer, after all the police have the added protection of blue lights as well as red.

This debate has gone on for far too long, The Campaign for Safer Roadside Rescue and Recovery CSRRR and PROF made great representation for the safety of our roadside workers, in fact it gained the support of 42 MPs, and it brought the debate to the House of Commons, read by Tracy Crouch CBE, Conservative Member of Parliament for Chatham and Aylesford since 2010.

The result of that reading by Tracy Crouch CBE on the 23rd July 2019 was for the chair, The Minister of State. Department for Transport’s Michael Ellis, congratulated the recovery industry for all the work it had done with regard its safety standards, however he continued by reminded the recovery industry of the current lighting regulations and added that measures were available for recovery operators to improve the conspicuity of their vehicles beyond

Michael Ellis’ closing statement was as follows: “We will be reviewing this issue over the coming months and will undertake a review of existing policy and report back”.

Coming months, did he really mean coming years?

That was July 2019, so where are we today? Well first we’re at least nine casualties down, two of those were in the January of this year, yes two recovery drivers killed on the A47 Leicestershire both incidents only six days apart. Would red rear warning lights have helped in warning motorists of roadside recovery workers in a hazardous position, could both these recovery drivers still be alive today? I don’t think that warrants debate.

Following the statement made by Michael Ellis, the batton was passed to the DfT, who in turn contracted the consultation and research process to Transport Research Laboratories (TRL).

TRL Limited, trading as TRL is an independent private company offering a transport consultancy and research service to the public and private sector. Originally established in 1933 by the UK Government as the Road Research Laboratory, it was privatised in 1996.

I could go on and list the fiasco of unpublished reviews, each time using this same independent company TRL to carryout review after review, and each time on the same subject, that’s 3 reviews on the same red rear warning light debate, a subject they (TRL) have already made their decision on, we know this because it was minute’d in a SURVIVE Executive meeting in 2017 the statement follows.

“SI (That was Steve Ives of the AA, now retired) advised that TRL we’re no longer supportive of the proposals for the use of red rear flashing lights on breakdown/ recovery vehicles.”

No evidence of why they should make such a statement, just demonstrating a total disregard to the safety of the recovery operator and an opinion that we assume continues to follow them, as we’re yet to see a published report.

Here we are almost four years have passed, and still no published research and consultation and that’s despite a statement in December 2020 by Mr Shapps, the then Transport Secretary who said, “Roadside recovery vehicles could soon start to use red lights rather than orange ones, particularly on so-called smart motorways which do not

have a hard shoulder.”

He told LBC radio: “You’re unable to use red lights on your vehicle. I’d like to see if that’s possible to bring in. “There’s been a big call from the recovery industry to say why can’t we, if we’re actually in that location [on a busy road], why can’t we show red lights?”

He added that it “could help with safety because people stop when they see a red light”. Ministers are set to press ahead with the plans after the change was backed by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) which sets policy for the police forces in England and Wales.

This announcement from Grant Shapps followed with a statement sent on behalf of Anthony Bangham, the chief constable of West Mercia Police and the council’s lead for Roads Policing, the NPPC said: “The NPCC view is that improving the safety of those integral to roadside rescue and recovery activity on our roads, is in line with our national strategy and something we would support.”

What is so controversial within these reports, that the DfT are so reluctant to publish them?

This edit highlights the amount of effort the recovery industry has put into making our roadside workers safer. We have signed up to PAS 43 as a specification to manage our businesses in a professional manner and we work to the safety standards set in NHSS17/17B on the strategic road network and in the main the standard set within Police Recovery Contracts. This includes the introduction of a national training scheme to ensure the highest quality,

consistent training for our roadside workers.

The recovery industry has investing millions of pounds in vehicles and equipment and all the time considering the highest standards and best working practices. We have campaigned to ensure that our KSI’s are properly recorded through STATS19, so we can get a clear picture of any casualty’s. We have a central area to record near misses to further improve our practices (IVR website).

A number of industry members give up their time to sit on various working groups and committees in both the public and private sector to ensure the best safety outcome for our workers – usually in a voluntary basis. We have proven that we want to use every tool available to us to reduce those KSIs, including the use of red rear facing warning lights. So, our industry does deserve at the very least answers to our questions but at the most human level it should be granted the same protection granted to others who work roadside - red rear facing warning lamps, what are we waiting for?

Many motor traders and recovery operators are finding it difficult to get appropriately priced insurance right now. Why is that, and how can you help?

There are many dynamics which are currently driving costs within the insurance industry, from the current war in the Ukraine to the cost-of-living crisis, to name but two. The Ukraine war and inflationary pressures are driving up the cost of claims, with replacement parts or building materials costing more today than this time last year. These factors alone increase the cost of insurance for customers.

All three are likely to change how vehicles are recovered and how garages service and repair these vehicles. When you’re not helping us to insure our businesses, what do you like to do with your spare time?

I am a dedicated family man and enjoy spending time with my family and undertaking the odd game of golf (I am not very good, to be honest!), and watching all kinds of sport. My dog also takes up a fair amount of my spare time with long walks – sometimes I wonder who is taking who for a walk!

Demand for recovery of electric and hybrid vehicles is growing quickly in the UK with casualty vehicles often presenting operators with challenging situations. These vehicles are heavy and cannot be rolled or dragged, even the intelligent onboard systems being controlled by the entry fob can prove hazardous to recovery operators dealing with them. With the additional concerns of storing damaged EV’s which may be at risk of a thermal event, the need for appropriate cost-effective equipment is of paramount importance.

In recent years RED have been working closely with the IVR to ensure their range of recovery equipment reflects the latest guidance being provided to recovery operators with regards to the safe recovery and storage of electric and hybrid vehicles. So much of the equipment that is normally used for non-EV recovery is still essential for safely moving these casualties. High Speed towing dollies, carrier dollies and other rolling skates are vital for moving non rolling vehicles to avoid any back charge. RED’s Prestige Brother straps which use interchangeable soft endless loops can be a real asset, as can Wreckmaster Skates to ease a vehicle safely onto a slide bed.

Key Shield Faraday Bags

Key Shield Faraday Bags prevent electronic keys communicating with their vehicles, protecting the Vehicle Recovery Operator from harm by preventing an electronic key fob communicating any pre-set adjustments to the vehicle e.g., changing seat or steering wheel position, lowering suspension, disengaging the handbrake. All of which pose a threat to the VRO. The UK Made, Disklags bag available from RED has been specifically designed with VRO’s in mind – a larger than normal bag to fit multiple fobs and use with a gloved hand. Made from military grade, triple thickness signal blocking material complete with an inner pouch to keep the bag in service for longer. Replacement inner pouches are also available to buy. These bags are police approved with the “Secure by Design” accreditation.

Industrial Infrared Thermometers

Recovery operators can use an infrared thermometer to take regular temperatures across the 5 check points of any electric (EV) or hybrid vehicle’s battery, to monitor any significant rising temperature levels. Using an infrared thermometer to record ambient, ground and battery temperature is an effective way to check for possible issues with an EV/ hybrid’s high voltage traction battery, which could indicate thermal runaway. Use in conjunction with the EV window stickers to clearly record the high voltage battery temperature at the scene of the recovery and during the storage process as per IVR training and protocols.

Alternatively, VRO’s can use an infrared thermometer to take the same 5 battery point, ground and ambient temperatures checks. The thermal imaging camera shows heat-mapped colour palettes and temperature reading, it includes an on-screen cursor to accurately locate minimum/maximum temperature variation is Industrial grade compact, gun-shaped, lightweight and easy to use. Simply aim, then pull the trigger to display the temperature of the item being measured. The LCD display gives a digital read-out of temperature over the range of -20 to 650°C.

Multimeter

Used to check low voltage batteries after disconnecting the low voltage earth lead. The meter includes a clamp for easier and safer one handed use.

Thermal Check Window Stickers

Highly visible, easily removable window stickers to record & monitor change of the high voltage battery temperature. Record temperatures using the stickers to ensure all of those involved in the recovery process have clear visibility of this crucial information.

Record battery and surrounding ambient temperatures:

• Before loading onto a recovery vehicle

• After unloading at storage location

• During storage. This may need to be done several times, if so, use additional stickers or a company temperature log sheet

• Before reloading for onward transport

Gloves

Fully insulated electrical safety gloves, Class 0 rated for 1000v working voltage should be worn to protect the VRO’s.

Vehicle Fire Blanket

For onsite safety when storing electric & hybrid vehicles. The IVR recommends use of a fire blanket in the incidence of identifying that a vehicle could go into thermal event following an impact having been recovered back to the VRO’s yard. VRO’s should only deploy the blankets as a precaution. If a thermal event has taken place resulting in a fire, then the emergency services should always be contacted immediately.

Once deployed, a fire blanket should not be removed until trained firefighting personnel have fully assessed the situation.

JUDGEPOWER undertake the first IVR Level 3 EV/Hybrid High Voltage Isolation Course

Since the launch of the IVR Level 3 EV/Hybrid High Voltage Isolation Module (VR27c) Judgepower have completed the first course run with their customers Boleyn Recovery & Fleet Services and Extreme Rescue. Boleyn required the module due to the number of electric buses they tow in the London area and Extreme Rescue attend incidents on behalf of the Fire & Rescue Services as a Heavy Rescue Specialist Tactical Advisor.

This module has been designed because on most of the electric buses it is not possible to disconnect the drive i.e., the prop shaft or the half shaft. The preferred recovery method of these vehicles is a rear lift but when this is not possible the manufacturer has given specific instructions on speed limits and distances the vehicle can be moved even after a high voltage disconnect has been undertaken.

On the course we delivered we used an electric single and double-decker bus which had two service plugs instead of the usual one. After the high voltage battery was isolated by removing the two service plugs the high voltage cables had to be removed from the electric motors to the integrated controller, they had to be disconnected, insulated and secured safely away from the chassis. Once this criteria had been met the vehicle could then be towed but with restrictions such as staying under 18mph and towed for no more than 12 miles. Further information regarding manufacturer specific instructions on other road scenarios is explained in the course.

For the rescue side of things on the single decker bus the batteries are located on the roof so carrying out temperature safety checks can be challenging. The service disconnect plug is located approximately 4m away from the batteries and run down the

offside rear of the bus from the roof to the previously known engine compartment, where the service disconnect plug or plugs are located and in certain RTC situation’s it is possible for these cables to become damaged. On a double decker bus the batteries are on the back of the bus vertical on the wall so if damaged is sustained to the rear, there is a risk that the batteries could be compromised. Previously there have been preconceived misconception that disconnecting the service plug renders the vehicle safer if there is a risk of electrocution, but to disconnect the service plugs on this particular vehicle and most vehicles, the operator/rescuer would have to enter the bus walking along the length of it to reach the service disconnect plugs making this not practical. However, a

BONIFACE RECOVERER TRIDENT HEADS TO NS CLARKE

It’s just about three years since Staffordshire based NS Clarke Recovery took delivery of their last Boniface Recoverer Trident. Over this time, the business has gone from strength to strength continuing to expand and getting progressively busier with each new contract and work provider added to their customer base. NS Clarke are renowned for having a very modern, clean, state-of-the art fleet and this latest vehicle will be a welcome addition. Based on a new Mercedes Actros 4153 8x4 chassis, this latest Recoverer Trident has been fitted with Boniface Deluxe stainless-steel bodywork and Stealth flyer. As with all Recoverer Tridents, the equipment features two BS EN 14492 compliant heavy-duty hydraulic winches, a heavy duty extending top boom and rear stiff legs with flip over feet and spade attachments which keep the vehicle anchored and stable during heavy winching or lifting scenarios.

ASSET FINANCE ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!

NTDA MEMBERS TURN OUT IN FORCE FOR WHEELWRIGHTS’ MANSION HOUSE BANQUET

On Thursday 11th May NTDA members from the tyre trade and associated UK automotive aftermarket were very well represented at the most impressive event in the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights’ social calendar the White Tie Banquet held at the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London; Mansion House in the heart of the City.

The NTDA is affiliated to the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights, the Company, which is one of the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London and number 68 in the ‘Order of Precedence’. Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1670, the original purpose of the Company was to regulate the manufacture and quality of handmade wooden wheels, (the Ancient Craft of Wheelwrighting), a role it still fulfils to this day by supporting working wheelwrights across the United Kingdom. Today, the Company is primarily a philanthropic and social organisation, with a particular emphasis on providing charitable backing for wheeled mobility and education, as well as supporting the Lord Mayor and the City of London Corporation.

By means of numerous social events, ranging from high-profile formal banquets, (such as Mansion House), and dinners, where guests can experience the historic traditions and customs of the livery companies of the City of London, to inter-livery skiing, sailing, shooting, go karting and golfing events and an annual traditional wheel-making weekend experience, the Company provides a platform for its wide cross section of members, to socialise in true style.

A NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Ever since recovery vehicles have been out and about, the industry has usually been quick to grasp any concept that would make life more simple. The first main-stream recovery assistance was the Harvey Frost Crane with its winding handle which must have found its way onto hundreds long wheel-based Land Rovers and even a variety of other small trucks. This was finally superseded by the new Infinite Spec Lift which is still in regular use to this day.

Alongside the Harvey Frost came the Beaver Tailed Transporter which itself was eventually superseded by the Slide-Back which now forms the backbone of any recovery business. Also, amongst all these we have had the RDT system which has the demountable trolley popping out of the back of a suitable van.

Now we have a new addition which is a bit mixed and matched and called the Light City Recovery System. In some ways it is a coming together of what we already have and have had. Firstly, I must thank Ron Perry of A19 Recovery for taking the time to show me around his latest acquisition, which was originally supplied by Boniface Engineering.

To start with the basic vehicle, in this case it’s an Isuzu Utah crew cab pick-up truck. The vehicle itself remains quite standard with its high and low ratio and an option of two or four wheel-drive over the six speed automatic transmission. 165 bhp is available from the 1.9 turbo diesel which, incidentally, runs without AdBlue. The recovery equipment is manufactured as a kit by FIOMA based

in Barcelona where the chassis is sent for the construction to be carried out, including the fitting of a counterbalance weight to the front. The chassis itself appears to have been strengthened by the addition of front to back side plates before the system is bolted to the original chassis. Incorporated into the build is a rear body which includes the beacon flyer and has two pannier boxes which could be easily used for carrying a selection of spare parts.

The vehicle has an assister air suspension which is self-levelling and becomes active as soon as the ignition is turned, thereby maintaining a standard ride height irrespective of the load. The near-side pannier box houses a control panel which observes the pressure in the rear air suspension. A take-off point is also provided at this location to enable an airline to be used for blowing up tyres etc. The whole back of the vehicle is rather busy with various add-ons, apart from a self-loading swan neck spec lift which looks as if it is a little over-engineered for this chassis. I am sure I have seen a like-for-like on a small Iveco. Nevertheless, the whole spec operation is controlled by an electrohydraulic pump system which provides the ‘in and out’, and ‘up and down’ and works the spec self-loading lift jaws. Just above is an 8000lb electric winch which, apart from loading the casualty, could be used for any other winching task, 25mtrs of rope are available. Either side of the main assembly is a pair of roller skates which can be used to put under the back wheels of the casualty vehicle to provide a full lift. I can’t get excited about these units as they have small hard rubber wheels and small bearings; I think a few hundred yards would be a good day’s work for them. Also, within the rear area are two pairs of aircraft-type wheels which can be fitted under the spec lift to help cope with a too heavy for purpose load. Again, I wouldn’t want to place a bet as to how far this system would travel. But, then again, we have to remember this is a vehicle that in many ways was designed to

get cars out of awkward spaces and it’s claimed that it can work in a multi-story car park. I can see how these bogies and jockey wheels could be brought into play for a short vehicle recovery. One person I spoke to claims a Range Rover has been got out of difficulty using this vehicle and its equipment.

Working with and recovering small cars like the Toyota Aygo or Ford Ka are more its cup of tea and there’s no reason why with plenty about it cannot be a very useful asset to a recovery fleet.

One of the most impressive aspects of the whole vehicle is the control panels - one either side at the rear, which are conveniently positioned and labelled up for use, provided you don’t mind the miss spelling. This is in contrast to the control panel which is also mimicked inside the cab and attached to the head lining between the two front seats about where you would fit an internal light. (I thought that was a bit naff!). All the operations are also on a hand-held remote unit. The vehicle has a GTW of 6,000 kgs which means it must make an excellent tow vehicle and a collapsible tow pole would have been a good asset as a tow ball is included in the rear kit.

Apart from claiming to be useful in the twists and turns of tight city streets, it probably would be very useful in remote rural areas because of its ability to move vehicles in rough terrain. With a few spare parts attached I could see it being a very good road-side assistance vehicle with the ability to get the casualty to a place of safety where it could be taken away by a more robust vehicle. We think about tight side streets as being a problem, but we have all been to remote cottages where the breakdown is two corners around. This piece of kit would just be your saving grace.

Priced at £60,000 for the kit and over £100,000 for a complete vehicle, it’s at the top end of a spend and will need to earn its keep, but given the right conditions I think that might be on.

NOVAWINCH FACTORY TOUR

The Novawinch Factory, last time I was there the factory was very busy, and a lot of improvements were going on but nowunbelievable! The transformation is unbelievable and beyond what we would have expected. This equated to the tune of around 18 million Chinese yen, which equates to around over £2 million sterling.

Walking around the factory with Jason the managing director and his father was the highlight. Jason having been educated in US and Australia is conversant with the western world and has visited us here at Rydam at Rothwell, Leeds. His father does not speak any English, but in true engineer terms, it’s not that difficult to converse when you have the same mental thinking and engineering understanding.

We started off on goods inwards, this is for all the raw materials, either machined or ready for machining in house. The investment in technology for the goods inwards is aerospace technology, parts brought in for machining, are placed in the 3D scanner. This identifies any porous castings, mis-shapes, making sure all the goods inwards for machining are of quality to move forward through the machining process.

The goods pre machined, are put through another process where the latest digital measuring software and equipment is brought into play. The machine self-calibrates on a known measurement, the proceeds when programmed for the particular part to measure all the relevant tolerances. This new system has cut down on faulty parts being processed before machining, and machined parts getting not the build process. The rejected parts are then held in a secure quarantined compound for rejection back to the relevant supply companies.

Some of the batch testing is then subject to heat and cold process tests, they have a machine that can simulate, +70 down to minus -50, Hot and cold enough to test any products or parts. The finished winches are also the finished winches are subject to these tests to prove the assembled winches will perform in the extreme of temperatures.

Another machine in the product testing is a vibration test, again finished winches are subject to a vibration test. Not just any vibration test, this can again simulate the highest of frequency variations which are hard to hear or see but can affect parts that are not suitable, to the shuddering and shaking of the roughest roads on earth.

A lot of this after build testing is for the military winches that Novawinch produce, being the biggest military supplier in the far east. The military winches Novawinch produce are the only ones that actually pass the stringent military standards, where a lot of other winch manufacturers claim their winches are for military use, but in reality are definitely not.

We then moved on to parts distribution to the assembly lines, the incoming parts are loaded into trolleys and distribution bins, then distributed to the relevant assembly lines, and machine shop departments. At this point it was apparent the place was like an operating theatre, spotlessly clean. Dedicated cleaners, with sweeping and scrubbing machines working tirelessly all the time to keep the production departments spotless!!

Walking around discussing points with Jason’s father by sign language and a piece of paper, to show what I meant and Jason translating it was apparent he was very happy for someone else to understand the engineering and what had gone into the factory these last few years. A lot of people who visit the factory who have never been involved in production facilities, therefore would not appreciate the quality of the factory, and the work undertaken, making the state of the art, R&D, design, testing and production facility.

Quality control is paramount in this factory, you can see all the workers have pride in their work, there are special processes for winch manufacture from winding the rope on the drum, to checking the drag on the winch drums when pulling the winch rope out. A lot of this specialist systems are with dedicated built machines by the company, as they have built test beds to test the process to the maximum ensuring the minimum of warranty and rejections.

Moving on through the factory to the winch drum welding machine, again another specialty machine that auto picks all the components by robot, assembles then in the correct procedure, Then, drops them into a welding machine which welds both sides of the drum simultaneously to stop distortion, finally dropping it out into a stillage, all finished ready to send to the cleaning station. All these processes are robot or machine operated with minimal human intervention, allowing greater quality control, and speed of operation.

The CNC machine shop, rows of the latest CNC machines ensure absolute accurate machining of the tested parts. From gears, to winch drums, motor flanges, housings all machined to the highest tolerances, with latest software programmed machines. All parts again quality checked, and then moved to the washing stations so all parts are thoroughly cleaned before being sent to the production lines, of which there are 6 production lines.

Next shop was injection moulding, there were three injection moulding machines producing cover’s, knobs, dials etc for the various winches. To speed up changes and react to new designs, the factory even have their own engineers making machine dies with the spark eroding machines on site. Now that was quite a conversation with Jason’s father to explain spark eroding machine from English to Chinese!!!

Again, throughout the factory cleanliness, beyond all expectations but just the norm in this factory. Hydraulic winch testing, every hydraulic winch has a testing programme, either with rope fitted or just the test rope fitted for testing. This is quite unusual, testing every hydraulic winch, but again this comes from the very comprehensive

military winch production and testing, which is extended to all hydraulic winches.

J&J EUROTECH DELIVERED TO DEVON & CORNWALL POLICE

J&J Conversions were delighted to hand over a new lay flat twin deck transporter to Devon & Cornwall Police recently.

A collaborative and successful tender between Hendy Group (Exeter) to supply the 16 T EuroCargo chassis and J&J Conversions to build the conversion has resulted in an incredibly versatile vehicle that the Force is truly, “over the moon with”.

J&J’s steel Eurotech slide bed with a lay flat top deck is designed for longevity, minimal maintenance, and maximum capacity.

The build specification included a 2,500kg top deck, spec lift to the rear, D shackle, snatch block, skates and ramps and trolley jack along with 12/24V jump system with battery equalizer.

The completed vehicle returned an impressive 6600kg pay load and is based at Devon & Cornwall’s Police workshop.

Last September Tears Recovery were call out to a Recovery of a 55 ton excavator that fell 20 meters of a cliff edge and landed on its side at a Quarry in the Yorkshire Dales. Tears Recovery attended three days prior to liaise with the contractors on method of recovery and carried out full risk assessment and method statements.

The contractors prepared the site for us by removing 40 dumper loads of material in front of machine and constructing platforms for recovery vehicles. The recovery took two days with three operators, two heavy recovery vehicles and was supported with sites own dozer and excavator.
