PHILLIP BLACK

OCCUPATION: I currently lead the strategy team at Omobono a B2B-focused creative agency in the city. I’ve been in the marketing field ever since high school, first as a graphic designer, then as an agency owner, and the past several years focusing purely on research and strategy. I absolutely love what I do because I get to shape brands and impact organizations every day alongside incredible teammates and clients. STATUS: Married to Ashley (7.5 years). We met through the interwebs and dated while she was wrapping up medical school. She’s an incredible lady who kicks ass and saves lives everyday as a Pulmonologist and Critical care doc — all while rocking heels and bright lipstick. (Yes, I married up.)

KIDS? Our daughter, Tahlia is 4 years old. She’s a sweet, smart and bold kiddo who I’m sure will be the president (or a brain surgeon) one day. WHERE ARE YOU LIVING? North Center neighborhood in Chicago INTERESTING FACTS: - My wife met our daughter while doing Ebola response in Sierra Leone. Thus began a painful, messy but ultimately glorious adoption process. - On a lighter note, I still have the vintage British car I had in high school. (’71 MG Midget) Though I am increasingly getting the requisite “get rid of it” nudges from my wife. FAVORITE DRINK: Black Manhattan, Sazerac, Vieux Carre ...or any type of Scotch

MARGAUX MCLAUGHLIN WEBER

After heading west for college at UCLA, I couldn’t get enough of the sunshine and warm weather (I’ve allllways hated the winter), so I stayed in La La Land for 11 years, until funny enough my husband (not from Chicago) got a job offer here, so we figured it was time to head back to the Midwest to be with the fam.

Married for 5 years to a Bostonian and hence a crazy Boston sports fan, Chris Weber (nope, not the basketball

Mom to a sassy 3 ½ year old Cecelia (she clearly didn’t learn it from me😊), and 3 month old Giovanni “Gio” my blonde haired, blue eyed Italian - the loves of my life! We’re still holding out living in the city, my family hasn’t convinced us yet to move to the burbs - they are all still in the western burbs, and my mom still works a few days here and there at HSHS. I know the move is coming soon, so I try to hit up as many restaurants & bars as I can before we make our exit and trips to the city become less frequent. Right now my favorite drink is just about anything now that I am back off the wagon! Other than that, I love teaching Cece old school music and she already loves 80's movies like her mama! Trying to live the dream, one day at a time!

I’ve been in marketing for pretty much all of my adulthood. Sort of fell into it after college, focusing on experiential marketing aka creating compelling experiences for brands to directly engage with their consumers, clients, and employees. I’ve been lucky to work with incredibly creative people and brands like Disney, ABC, National Geographic, Warner Bros, Jameson Whiskey, Absolut (& a lot of iconic liquor brands), eBay, & Taco Bell (I told clients about the good times I have had at the TB on 75th), working on some fun stuff for KFC at the moment - they are such an off the wall, fun brand (see photo with George Hamilton from a few months ago)! I'm even luckier to travel a ton for my job in the US and globally.

player, only one ‘b’ in our last name). We’re already prepping for the Bears-Patriots game in October - my Boston in laws are trying to take over Chicago.

RISA SANCHEZ

OCCUPATION: Director of Marketing Science at PHD Media I’m sure you’re wondering what the heck is Marketing Science. Basically, I work on strategic research solutions & media analytics for our various accounts across the tech, travel, auto, CPG, retail & pharmaceutical verticals. A few of our clients include Google, HBO, VW, Carnival Cruises & Old Navy. I was based in our NYC office for 5 years but was able to move my role to work out of our Chicago office earlier this year.

4 WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?

Media research has been my career path since college and one of my dreams was to work for MTV some day (probably because I was so into Real World & music videos). Surprisingly that wish would come true when got a position doing audience research for MTV Networks (later rebranded as Viacom) entertainment channels. Majority of the broadcast and cable networks had their research teams based in NYC or LA so I felt pretty lucky to do research from Chicago on some of my favorite networks: Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, MTV2 & CMT. Before that I was Nielsen working on various media research & analytics projects for major advertisers and networks. Needless to say, TV in particular has been a big part of my career, and it’s been so interesting to see how much the media landscape has changed and how differently people consume it nowadays. STATUS: Married my husband, Gentel, on our 14 year dating anniversary and it’s been 6+ years married. A total of 21+ years together... geez that’s a long time. Sarah Robles actually introduced us over the phone one day

after school Junior year. When we got married, she and LaTanya Stockdale were bridesmaids at our wedding. KIDS: I have a 3 year old son (turning 4 next month) named Devin who is obsessed with Bruno Mars, Thomas and Friends, Hot Wheels, Maroon 5, Drake, dinosaurs and donuts. He loves to sing & dance and just started pre-school. WHERE ARE YOU LIVING: Recently moved back to Chicago after being in the NYC area for 5 years. Unfortunately, my husband has had a reoccurrence of a very aggressive cancer so it’s been really helpful to be closer to family especially during this difficult time. I know this is a not the typical place to ask but it would be great if you can send some prayers & positive vibes to our family. Thank you so much in advance! INTERESTING FACTS: - Back in college, I tried out for a show called Pop Stars (before American Idol was popular), and I was in the same 5 person audition group as Nicole Scherzinger (pre-Pussycat Dolls). - I was a Communication Research Intern at the Brookfield Zoo for a summer, and there I discovered what is now my absolute favorite animal, Otters. I definitely have an obsession with otters, both sea and river otters because they are too darn cute! CURRENT FAVORITE DRINKS: Ice cold water, Avocado freeze with lychee jelly @ Joy Yee in Chinatown, and if I desperately needed an extra jolt in my day, Mountain Dew. For cheap and good iced coffee, I go for a BK Joe vanilla iced coffee at Burger King.

KRISTY KLECKAUSKAS OCCUPATION: I just started my 16th year teaching - all of which has been at the middle school level. It’s really hard to believe it’s been 16 years, but I am fortunate and blessed to have a job (and a career) that I absolutely love!! I taught at Wilkins Jr. High in Justice with Rasa Lisbeth for the first four years of my career, and since the fall of 2007 have been at my current job at Hannah Beardsley Middle School in Crystal Lake. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Spanish and have taught Spanish for a majority of my career, but I’ve also taught language arts, social studies, and English as a Second Language. I love teaching Spanish the most!!

4 Zumba classes a week, teaching full-time, teaching a class in Williams Bay in the evenings, taking my ESL endorsement classes, and tutoring a college student! Talk about being busy! Lol! My life has majorly calmed down since then, but those were definitely some unforgettable, amazing experiences, and I met some great people along the way!!

My experience teaching Spanish also led me to serve as adjunct faculty at Aurora University - George Williams College in Williams Bay, WI, where I taught introductory level Spanish. I loved that experience and not to mention the gorgeous setting of the campus!

KIDS: No kids of my own yet, but I have the most adorable niece Alexandria (daughter of my sister Kari Ann O’Leary and brother-in-law Brent O’Leary) who will be turning 1 in October. She melts my heart!! I also have a sweet, spunky, character-of-a-cat named Chloe who I adopted from the Hinsdale Humane Society in 2008 when I was a volunteer there. And, I’ve always considered my students “my kids” just like (if you went to Gower, you’d probably remember this) a science teacher who I loved named Mrs. Harms considered all of us. Each year, I have the privilege of meeting and working with about 180 tweens and teens. I love seeing all of my students’ creativity and personalities and watching them grow over the years.

I was also a Zumba instructor and absolutely loved it!! When I found out about Zumba and took my first class, I was hooked! I knew I had to get certified and teach my own classes. Teaching Zumba allowed me to combine my passions for teaching, fitness, dancing, and world cultures into one. At one point, I was teaching

STATUS: Not yet married, though I was engaged at one point. Thankfully, God had better plans for me and allowed me to cross paths with Mike, who I met on Match and have been dating for 3.5 years.

WHERE ARE YOU LIVING: I was living in Crystal Lake until just a couple years ago when I moved a couple towns over to Huntley. It’s beautiful! A nice combination of suburbs mixed with country.

CURRENT FAVORITE DRINK: I love sweet tea vodka with lemonade and a good riesling, pinot noir, or malbec is always enjoyable! And, my fave non-alcoholic beverage: crisp, refreshing water.

INTERESTING FACTS: I graduated from U of I Champaign but started my college years at NIU in DeKalb. I roomed with my sister when she was a freshman at NIU and I was a sophomore; I was also an RA for a semester. A part of my heart will always be a Huskie! I’ve done 3 sprint distance triathlons and many 5ks, even though I’m not an avid runner or an endurance athlete and was on the “B” team during the swimming unit in high school. I just love being active and participating in events for a good cause! In January 2015, I did a service trip in the small, rural town of Angostura in the Dominican Republic, and it was an amazing experience! I met some of the most kind, hard-working, and happy people. In July 2012, when I was in Madrid, Spain with my mom, we were walking through Plaza Mayor and stopped to watch a street performer. He then randomly chose me to be part of his performance. Good thing I spoke Spanish!

GWEN LUISI

MY SHORT STORY – typical working mom living in the suburbs

6 WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?

LONG STORY- After college I lived downtown Chicago for a number of years, and although I loved the city lifestyle I took a promotion that relocated me to Southern California. I fell in love with Ventura as soon as I got here. It’s an hour up the coast from Los Angeles, a laid-back beach community that isn’t overly trendy. I’ve been working in the produce industry for the last 15 years. I started in Chicago with Dole selling bananas, was promoted to Regional Manager for Pineapples in California, and after 13 years with Dole I took a position with the world’s largest avocado company, Mission Produce. I now handle national wholesale strategies, and with avocados being as popular as they are, I’m extremely busy. So thank you to everyone who can’t go without their avocado toast in the morning. My husband, then boyfriend, moved to California with me. We have a house in Ventura, 2 little boys (a 4 year old, and a 10 month old), who are full of energy, love, and happiness until it’s time to share toys then their super powers kick in & they turn into Jack-Jack from

The Incredibles. I also have 2 border collies – Cleo & Chloe who used to be my spoiled babies, but have since been downgraded after the people children were born. Last year my mom moved in with us too - yay for free babysitting, and props to my hubby for living with his mother-in-law. Before kids I played beach volleyball obsessively, after work and on the weekends you would always find me & my husband on the courts. After dark, I managed and competed in a weekly Texas Holdem poker tournament… those were good times where I met a lot of new friends in Ventura. Post children, I had to find other inclusive entertainment for the whole family. Play dates, pool time, and sand castles at the beach fill our weekends. We’ve also gone camping a lot this summer, the baby takes the best naps when he’s outside. Call out to Maria Giampoli and Christy Zaide, they stood up in my wedding – you ladies are amazing, wish we lived closer together. That’s me in a nutshell, I’d attend the reunion if it weren’t a flight away. Have fun!

VANESSA HARLAN

OCCUPATION: (Mary)Jane of all trades.. For nine years I owned and operated an urban medicinal cannabis cultivation facility in Oregon, and currently wear a number of hats in the recreational cannabis industry. SIDE NOTE: Non-psychoactive cannabinoids, such as CBD, offer a broad range of medicinal benefits that often exceed those of potentially harmful pharmaceuticals. Research also shows that said cannabinoids have the power to slow, and even halt, the growth of cancer cells. Squeeeee!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m proud to be part of this fast growing field that has so much potential in both medicine and industry! I also own a small vintage jewelry supply business, make custom jewelry, and am an avid craft enthusiast. I plan to use my ties in the local cannabis, wine, and brewing communities, along with my extreme craft wizardess skills, to open a “Craft & Sip”-style studio where people of legal age are invited to scratch their creative itch while imbibing on tasty local libations and/or sample various local cannabis products.

KIDS: One 8yr old Lhasa Apso called Pabu (meaning “puffball” in Tibetan), AKA Paburrito/Biscuit Smasher/ Smash Master Flex/Nugz/Nuggy Thompson/ Cuteness Everdeen/Professor Fuzzy Bottom/ Pabushka Fuzzishnakov, etc.. I may not have birthed him but he’s my baby nonetheless. And he’s definitely on my honor roll 🏆

DARIEN, IL

INTERESTING FACTS: I very rarely consume psychoactive cannabis products (in the last 15 years, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve taken THC, and only for medicinal purposes). I have a BFA from UIUC in Glass Arts which I don’t really use, even though I was given the “most likely to succeed in glass” award (there were only two of us in my graduating class.. so.. 🤷🏻‍♀️? Mad props to my P’s tho for supporting my creative endeavors! 🤗). Also, I’ve traveled to 17 countries outside the US to date, I’ve never wanted children (sorry mom), I’m a rock hound/gem nerd, mycology enthusiast 🍄, and Astro-traveler.. And I 💯% believe in aliens (👽👾🤖). BTW, my brother and I are the only people in our entire family that aren’t conservative. We somehow managed to escape that insanity. So, if I even make it to this reunion, please don’t try to convince me that you don’t like tacos. You’re lying. And if you want to see my “half-smile/ nod/snap/point/pivot/walk-away” move™️, just mention Fox News (patent pending). FAVORITE DRINK(S..?): Red wine (Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is my shiiiiiiiz!), Pilsner (more IPA for you!), and bourbon (Prichard’s and Blanton’s). I guess I drink water sometimes too..

LOCATION: Since graduating from UIUC I’ve lived in Colorado, Oregon, and California. I’m currently back in Portland, OR after 3 years in the Bay Area vortex. But.. ok.. so, like, Portland is the worrrst! It’s nothing like Portlandia, it rains constantly, and people are assholes.. So you definitely don’t wanna move here. Seriously, stop moving here. We have enuf condos and it’s getting WAY less weird.. 😝 (Dave and Sonya, you get a pass).

32 WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?

TANYING DONG PRASLIČKA

OCCUPATION: Attorney/SAHM. I was a public defender for three years on Long Island right after graduating law school. It was the most fulfilling, interesting, and fun job I’ve ever had and I love public interest law because of it. I live in Pennsylvania but only licensed in New York, so I volunteer for a federal magistrate judge, working on prisoner civil rights cases.

burned out and went to law school, got married, and had three kids while moving from NYC to Long Island to Pittsburgh. I recently began voice lessons again and love performing.

WHERE ARE YOU LIVING: Pittsburgh, PA. We moved here two years ago for my husband’s career as a pediatric anesthesiologist at the UPMC Children’s Hospital. Pittsburgh is wonderful for raising kids and we love it.

Being a public defender helped me gain so much confidence. I had to learn to talk to and negotiate with judges, assistant district attorneys, and most challenging of all my clients, who were from every walk of life and had so many stories. It was a total privilege to represent and advocate for people who could not afford a lawyer, even when not all of them were grateful and looked down on me for being a “free lawyer.” The best part of the job was when I felt I had helped someone and they were genuinely thankful. The worst part was the smell of the lockup area in the courthouse. But the catcalling was fun, believe it or not.

BRIAN WEIDNER OCCUPATION: I run a recruitment advertising firm for healthcare organizations. We primarily support the hiring process for Physical Therapist positions. A special hello to the PTs in our class: Katie Wax and Wendy Pippenger Brunswick. I started the company in 2007, but I get bored every so often and will occasional pursue a side project. For a few years, I owned a business with a couple of guys in Florida…we created a Groupon style business for Sanibel Island. All-in-all it was a waste of time, but I learned a lot in the process. Within these side projects, I love buying domain names. I own about 20 at this point...my current favorites are HiddenGemTravel.com and TestDriveMusic.com. I have partially formed business plans for both…but more than likely, I won’t ever do anything with them. After a few years, I just let the unused domain names expire, such as: MagicMonkeyBrewery.com and VanishBakery.com. (For a while now, I’ve been really keen to develop a business with a magic theme.) Last Fall, after a fun night reliving my college days, I purchased PeoriaSmell.com. (If you’ve ever spent time in Peoria, you’d understand.) I’ll most certainly do nothing with this one.

We live in Muskego…it’s a suburb about 20 minutes from Milwaukee. Our town has a couple of lakes and the people here love Water Skiing. In the summer, the Muskego Waterbugs do a water ski show every Wednesday. Hundreds of people come with their lawn chairs and watch the show. Parking is free, the show is free and bratwursts are $1.50. For 10 years Heidi and I spent our winters in Sanibel, Florida. During that time we lived in Wisconsin AprilDecember…and Florida January-March. We’d like to continue snowbirding, but with kids it’s a bit more difficult. INTERESTING FACTS: 1. I’m really skilled at making stove-top popcorn and I developed a unique way of cutting a watermelon that even impressed my mother-in-law. 2. My HSHS id number is often what I’ll use for my password or pin number. Do you remember your id number? It was 6 digits. (And now, I’ll be changing all my passwords and pin numbers.) 3. I never learned how to shave and as a result I typically have some level of facial hair at any given time. If I have enough drinks at the reunion, I’m going to ask David Diane Leon for his advice.

5. Pretty sure that I could still beat Manu Raju at table tennis. CURRENT FAVORITE DRINK: I love my Bialetti Stovetop Espresso Maker. I also quite enjoy Dragon’s Milk by New Holland Brewing…it’s a bourbon barrel-aged stout.

I don’t like getting comfortable, Panera keeps me challenged with new positions every couple of years. I first went to college to be a teacher and I spend all my time teaching now, just not in a classroom. My skills from Speech with Mr. Doherty serve me every single day, I’m “on stage” every day, the tools I learned on the HSHS stage come in handy #Thespian4life STATUS: Married, going on 7 years with 2 munchkins; Duncan is 5 and Maxwell is 3. Stu and I were friends in high school, even though he went to DGS... Dated in college, dated other people after college, and reconnected about 8 years ago. You all would have known me as Leah Muszynski... WHERE ARE YOU LIVING: Downtown Westmont, we LOVE that we can have a little tiny bit of city life in

the burbs (We both lived downtown for years), with a small town, and it doesn’t hurt that our kids won’t go to Central or DGS :) INTERESTING FACTS: Besides all of the above; I was a pastry chef for a number of years. One day I would love to open up my own bakery cafe. My 3-year-old Max was born without an ear canal on one side and wears a hearing aid, he’s also allergic to dairy. Stu and I recently transitioned into a mostly vegan lifestyle to support Max a little differently and just be healthier all over. Learning how to cook food and get similar results without dairy and meat has been super fun for this foodie! CURRENT FAVORITE DRINK: Any Wine is a welcome wine, anything Gin, I love an interesting cocktail PICS: The family last year at the beach, One of my fav pics of Margret Rossipp and I at Graduation, The hubs and I getting married, and my goofball dinosaur Max and I at Halloween last year (he’s still wearing that costume...)

LAUREN KAESEBERG

OCCUPATION: I’m the Legal Director of the Illinois Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization that represents prisoners who are innocent but wrongfully convicted. Most of my cases are from Illinois, but over the years I’ve also helped to exonerate clients from NJ, TX, and a death row client in Mississippi. I also work closely with exonerees on rebuilding their lives after being released from prison and I do a lot of public speaking on issues related to our work. I’m also an Adjunct Professor of Law at NIU Law School.

Prior to my current job, I did criminal defense work and was on the defense team for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s federal trials and appeal. That was a high pressure and crazy experience. I also taught high school in Chicago for a couple years before going to law school.

My hubby Lester is now an Alderman on the City Council so looks like we’re here to stay. ;) I feel lucky to have such great friendships with old friends... Jeff Hazen and I are still thick as thieves and have daughters who are 3 weeks apart in age! Also, living back in Darien has given me the opportunity to strengthen decades-old friendships and it’s so cool see our kids grow up together! Karen Buckels Amanda Hanlon. It turns out I have zero recent photos that include me in them (mom life! gotta work on that). Below is a selfie I shared with a friend while attending my last national conference in February. That said I almost never take selfies, even with friends - I stink at them! Also below is a pic of my sweet Chase at the Mark DeLay Art Fair this spring. CURRENT FAVORITE DRINK: Focusing on health these days so it’s water and herbal tea for me.

KRISTINE ROSS CARPENTER

OCCUPATION: Family Medicine/ Obstetrics Physician at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL

After high school, I went to the University of Illinois for undergrad where I studied Biology and Spanish. Four years wasn’t enough for me apparently, so I stayed in Champaign-Urbana for an additional two years to get

FAVORITE DRINK: Right now, water or a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. When I’m not pregnant, I love Summer Shandy or a sweet white wine like Reisling or Moscato.

STATUS: Married (10 years) to Jonathan Carpenter. We met through a mutual friend who invited both of us on a Spring Break trip in 2004. KIDS: Three! Jack, age 5; Ellie, age 3; and Baby #3 on the way! We figured life was already chaotic, so why not add to the craziness! I never imagined I’d be pregnant at our 20th reunion though 😳 WHERE ARE YOU LIVING: Champaign, IL

DARIEN, IL

Class of 1988 • 20 years 103

INTERESTING FACTS: Melissa Ray Houston and I randomly bought houses a few houses down from each other back in 2016. It’s been super fun raising our kids together since they are the same ages and in the same classes!

my Master’s in Exercise Physiology. After that, I headed to Albany, NY for medical school. After braving the snow in upstate New York for four years, my husband and I opted for warmer weather and moved to Durham, North Carolina for my residency in Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. If it weren’t for our family in Illinois, I think we would still be in NC, but we eventually moved back to Chicago for my one year Obstetrics Fellowship in Oak Park at West Suburban Hospital. We then moved to the middle of nowhere (Watseka, IL) and I started a practice there. We lasted there for two and a half years, but small town living really wasn’t for two kids from the suburbs! We moved to Champaign in 2014 because I have a rural health grant from the State of Illinois for loan repayment. My current practice is in Mattoon where I see patients. I am also very involved with teaching medical students, which I love! By next summer, I will be teaching about half of my time and I can’t wait!

KIDS: Andrew (9 yrs) WHERE ARE YOU LIVING: Plainfield INTERESTING FACTS: Since 2011, my family has spent a lot of time in hospitals searching for answers and the best of the best docs. Xoxoxo Enough serious talk- I still love to watch reruns of 90210, Dawson’s Creek, etc.....I found out this year that I’ve been pronouncing Manu Raju’s name incorrectly for over 30 years and called him out for never correcting his Mark DeLay classmates....and I can still do the entire birthday dance routine from my first job at Darien’s Chuck E. Cheese’s. CURRENT FAVORITE DRINK: Sprecher Root Beer

CHRISTY ZAIDE

STATUS: Single, love can be very complicated but with each partner I have, seeing a mirror of myself and knowing what I want in this life KIDS: An adorable, energetic, loving pup with special power skillz of finding the best nooks to cuddle in, having super speed and is a “badass” bred on the west side of the island

DARIEN, IL

WHERE ARE YOU LIVING: Oahu, HI, I was meant to live out a dream and live the Aloha life. If you’ve never traveled to Hawaii put that on your list. The islands are a very special place in the world. INTERESTING FACTS: Through a coworker in Chi-town, I was exposed to the Burning Man culture in 2009 and it changed my life when I was gifted my first set of fire tools. Anywhere I’ve traveled/lived, I sought out the fire and flow communities which have connected me with the most significant, epic humans in the world. One of my passions. Another being, hiking. My crew was recently in the Kalalau, coast of Kauai, and made a 12 mile backpacking hike in the valley. During our journey, the island reached record high of flash floods. We survived the 12 mile hike out, and some endured another 8 miles through landslides and power lines, making it out safely. Our story is on CNN news. Definitely an experience, that reset the switch and not stopping there, will continue to add to my life story.
