A LETTER FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT What a great honor it is for me to be elected president of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce this year! I’ve lived in Indianola for almost eleven years now and have fallen in love with this community. I’m proud to raise my children in this town which provides so many amazing events, programs, and opportunities to socialize and become active in the community. We have an incredible school system which is currently making phenomenal changes to better our children. We also have so many valuable treasures including the Des Moines Metro

Plans and directs the activities of the fire department and ambulance service, including establishing a fire prevention program, inspecting buildings and premises, overseeing emergency response and protecting life and property from fires.
The goal of the Indianola Street Department is to make the city’s transportation system safe and free of any type of debris. It maintains pavement for all public right-of-ways, city-owned parking lots, sidewalks, and nearly 90 miles of streets.

The human resources department recruits employees, administers employee benefits and oversees supervision of risk management functions such as workers’ compensation and liability.

IMU ELECTRIC SYSTEM The Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) electric department was established in May 1890 to provide electric service to the residents of Indianola. The electric utility is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees. IMU serves the electric requirements of the citizens of Indianola located within its established territorial boundaries.
The Indianola Public Library promotes life-long learning and enjoyment with free and equal access to information, educational and recreational resources for the entire community. The library director oversees all library activities subject to the general library board of trustees and municipal restrictions. The Community Development Department safeguards the health, property and public welfare through the regulated and orderly development of land and land uses within the city of Indianola. It protects life and property from all hazards subject to structure design, construction, occupancy, repair, removal or demolition. The Community Development Department also enforces the city zoning ordinances.

IMU purchases energy on a wholesale basis but is equipped to provide 47.5MW of electricity with local generating units. Two substations and a loop-feed transmission system provide customers with a redundant supply of power. IMU currently serves 6,300 electric meters with average annual sales of 116,430,000 kWh’s. The current annual peak demand for Indianola is 34.07MW. IMU also offers a variety of energy efficiency incentives for qualifying customers. IMU WATER SYSTEM The Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) water department was established in 1905 and is governed by the same five-member Board of Trustees as the electric department. Indianola’s water is supplied by four deep-water wells that extend approximately 2,600 feet down into the Jordan Aquifer. The IMU water department is responsible for maintaining 90 miles of water mains, 675 fire hydrants and 1,500 valves in the Indianola distribution system. Indianola’s raw and finished water data is available on our website at www.i-m-u.com. IMU NETWORK SERVICES Indianola Municipal Utilities offers access to telephone, internet, video and other network services via a fiber optic network connected directly to the customers’ premise. IMU’s open access fiber system allows private service providers to deliver secure, reliable service with virtually unlimited bandwidth. IMU is also able to tailor network uses of dedicated dark fiber and redundancy solutions to customers’ specifications.

Attractions DES MOINES METRO OPERA Des Moines Metro Opera is a summer festival of opera that has grown far beyond that title. NATIONAL BALLOON MUSEUM The National Balloon Museum dedicates itself to providing the public with a comprehensive understanding of ballooning and its history through its exhibitions and collections. The museum archives more than 200 years of ballooning, hosts 24,000 visitors a year (with 20 countries in attendance) and operates on more than 2,000 volunteer hours annually. Admission to the museum is free. Donations are accepted. The National Balloon Museum is a volunteer organization and is operated solely on donations and free-will offerings.
