rom simple to quite extensive procedures, one of the aims of many dental treatments is to maintain periodontal and bone integrity. Bone replacement is therefore a major benefit that can be obtained from dental therapy. All forms of bone loss, vertical or horizontal, eventually require some form of transplant to prevent tooth loss. In the event of inevitable loss of teeth, the socket needs to be preserved and bone loss corrected for effective replacement of teeth to be possible. Bone grafting, whether synthetic or natural, is one of the ways by which bone loss is corrected. However, this requires autologous grafts or synthetic material, which may be rejected by one’s body. An easy alternative for good grafting is with the application of plasma-rich fibrin (PRF). It is a simple process that involves the collection of a sample of blood with no anticoagulant. This is then immediately centrifuged to separate red blood cells from the plasma. A natural coagulation process results in the easy collection of a plasma-rich fibrin clot that can be directly applied to the affected area/surgical site. PRF has been scientifically proven to enhance an individual’s self-healing and regeneration process as well as help to achieve better post-operative results. Rather than the use of products from bovine or cadaver sources, the remarkable regeneration abilities of one’s own body are employed. This is much more safe and beneficial, does not require the use of artificial chemicals or products, and is relatively inexpensive. With the use of PRF, there is always a decreased chance of post-operative complications. PRF is versatile in its dental application and can be used in sinus lift procedures, ridge augmentation, socket preservation, and correction of intra-bony defects, among others. It is also great for ridge preservation after tooth loss.
