MEN’S HEALTH URBANATHLON
More than 3700 participants proved their mettle as they took part in the 2015 Men’s Health Urbanathlon held at Kallang Practice Track on 1 March 2015.
The gruelling 14km course featured nine obstacles, with the inclusion of 3 new obstacles. It also included a Mystery Obstacle which required competitors climb up to a six-metre structure and to jump off from a two-storey height to end the race. Urbanathletes dug deep into their physical and mental reserves to conquer these challenges.
True Fitness was proud to be the official sponsor of this event and was given branding opportunities for one of their obstacles — BALANCE SHEET. Participants had to balance themselves on a sloping beam that was only 4-inch wide and make their way across the next sets of beams of different heights. This was a true test of their overall balance and coordination.
Our brand ambassador, Paul Foster, together with some of our Personal Trainers, took part in this year’s event. At the end of this 6th edition event, every participant, both men and women, emerged victorious by their own standards, having been tested on their endurance, strength and stamina to complete the event.

CNY LUNCHEON @ SPD
As part of a multi-pronged Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach to give back to the community, the True Group put together a Chinese New Year luncheon at SPD – an organisation that supports persons with disabilities – on 2 March 2015.
The SPD@ToaPayoh clients were treated to a yummy buffet lunch while True Group Founder and Group CEO, Mr Patrick Wee and National Council of Social Service CEO, Mr Sim Gim Guan, gave out oranges in line with the Lunar New Year festive season. They were accompanied by Senior Assistant Director of SPD, Mr Jeffrey Chin, who thanked the True Group for their recent donation of 12 gym equipment to SPD Ability Centre, SPD@Tampines and SPD@ToaPayoh. The equipment from the True Group replaces older machines which the SPD centres have been using. To share our success with the community while reinforcing the message that a healthy lifestyle is vital for one’s well-being, True recently donated over $50,000 worth of fitness equipment to ten volunteer welfare organisations under the National Council of Social Service, which include MINDS, SG Enable, SPD, PERTAPIS and Autism Resource Centre, to name a few.
Using gym equipment for therapy is part of the rehabilitative process for many clients at SPD. The equipment aids in regaining strength and flexibility after a stroke, fracture or spinal-cord injuries, which is what many SPD clients are diagnosed with. We are pleased that the use of our gym equipment could extend beyond our centres and are able to help meet the needs of the less fortunate.
The True Group is more than an organisation which advocates the importance of health and fitness. We are constantly finding ways to give back to society by helping the less fortunate. Having reached our 10th year in 2014, the True Group has embarked on various activities to meet this objective.
We started off with the True Charithon in December 2014 which raised over S$6,500 in donations for the Breast Cancer Foundation. True also embarked on a Water Saving Campaign early this year – by encouraging our members to shorten the duration of water usage, True hopes to save water and has pledged to donate the dollar savings from our 2015 water bill to charity via The Community Chest. In the month of January 2015, True members have already saved over S$4,800!

GET MORE COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR FAVOURITE COMFORT FOODS Do you crave for something sweet, salty or spicy whenever you are feeling your worst or your best? Save yourself from the guilt by going for healthy versions of your favourite comfort food!
We all have our favourite comfort foods. They calm our mind; they soothe our soul. It provides feelings of nostalgia, sentimentality and safety. We turn to them because they make us feel happy or even help us celebrate the fact that we feel happy. According to the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab, we tend to eat comfort foods as a reward, and not when we are depressed. About 86% of those surveyed say they seek out comfort foods while they are in a happy mood, as opposed to 36% who say they eat comfort foods when they were depressed. However, as much as they make us feel good, comfort foods actually do less good for our body. They clog up our arteries, being traditionally creamy, deep-fried and high in fat and calories. But we can still have our cake and eat it too, with healthy versions of our comfort food cravings. Check out these easy-to-prepare alternatives:
INSTANT NOODLES Let’s admit it: we love our instant noodles, in all its sodium glory. Not the healthiest choice around, but that doesn’t mean we need to forgo our comfort. Swap out those fried yellow noodles for bee hoon (rice vermicelli) or tang hoon (glass noodles). Discard the packet of seasoning and toss in some vegetables to make a stock that adds flavour and boosts nutrition at the same time. CHICKEN WINGS Instead of deep-frying chicken wings which strips the chicken of its health benefits as a protein source, brown them in a pan and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. You may also marinate the chicken wings in coconut oil and almond flour to bring out the flavour in the chicken, giving you crispy and delicious chicken wings. LAKSA A guilty pleasure for many Singaporeans, laksa is a dish consisting of thick rice noodles, fishcake, beansprouts, prawns and cockles in a rich, smooth gravy made with fresh coconut milk, dried shrimp and spices. For a low-fat version without losing the flavour, replace the coconut milk with skim evaporated milk or unsweetened soya milk. Substitute cockles with chicken breast fillets and throw in leafy vegetables like pak choy. Reference: http://foodpsychology.cornell.edu

THE CRUNCH ON CRUNCHES You’ve probably heard how stomach crunches are not the most effective way to tone your tummy, so what does it really do for you? What are some alternatives we can feed on, without the crunch?
Each time you perform an abdominal crunch, you are flexing your spine forcefully and repeatedly, which causes it more stress than it is designed to handle. Over time, it puts excessive strain on the part of the lower back that has the most nerves, leading to its wear and tear. According to True Fitness Master Trainer, Wendy Cho, another way of activating the core would be to do stability exercises, as anything that challenges one’s balance would activate the deep core muscles. Wendy says: “One simple exercise I do with clients is just standing on one leg and then taking them through gentle movements still on that one leg. And then increase the level of difficulty gradually.” In fact, sit-ups or crunches only focus on toning the rectus abdominis muscle, a pair of flat, long muscles that run the length of your abdomen, and neglect working your core muscles. These comprise the deep muscles in your back, abdomen and pelvis – what you rely on for daily living as well as sports and recreational activities.
Another way of activating the core would be to do stability exercises, as anything that challenges one’s balance would activate the deep core muscles. - Wendy Cho, Master Trainer at True Fitness.
To more effectively strengthen your abdomen and avoid back pain, try these exercises for a good core workout. •
•
Medicine Ball Slams Hold the medicine ball overhead, then slam it into the ground as hard as you can, while keeping your abs tight and breathing out. Bridges When you exercise your abs, you also need to maintain your low back strength. You can do a low back strengthening bridge by lying on your back, then pushing your hips up towards the sky while keeping your feet flat on the ground.
•
Front Planks Get into a belly-down position with your elbows bent and your body supported by just your forearms and your toes. From here, you can simply hold this plank position, or you can tap your feet or alternate between reaching with each arm.
•
Woodchopper In a standing position, hold a dumbbell, medicine ball, elastic band or cable above your body and to the side of your shoulder, and diagonally rotate with extended arms from above your shoulder, down and across your body to the outside of your hips -- just as if you were holding an axe and chopping a block of wood.
•
Cable Torso Twists In a standing position with your feet firmly planted and knees slightly bent, hold a cable or elastic band at arm's length (keep your arms straight) and twist your body.
