It’s a fact.

Open! It’s a fact. More than 500,000 students attend The City University of New York’s 24 colleges and schools. The CUNY School of Professional Studies is a new member of the largest urban university in the United States, open to new programs and methods of instruction that deepen CUNY’s commitment to providing access to and fostering excellence in learning.

CUNY SPS In 2003 CUNY’s Chancellor created the CUNY School of Professional Studies. His aim: to build a center of learning open to the world but focused on working adults seeking the knowledge and skills to advance in a dynamic, global, and technologically sophisticated job market. CUNY SPS has met that challenge with career-oriented online, in-person, and hybrid programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees or to certificates and advanced certificates. Many programs are breaking ground educationally; yet all share important qualities—most prominently, a distinguished, caring faculty that binds theory with practice.

Quotable! It’s a fact. “I am who I am today because of the choices I made yesterday.” A passionate participant in politics for much of the 20th century, Eleanor Roosevelt was a champion of civil rights in America and human rights around the world, becoming the first chairperson of the United Nations’ Commission on Human Rights.

CUNY SPS What are the results for students who chose CUNY SPS? Here’s

what two quotable graduates had to say: “I wanted the prestige of a CUNY degree with the flexibility of an online program–a degree that was challenging and worked with my schedule. CUNY SPS gave me both.” - Shawn Burkley, B.S. in Business, 2011 “I credit CUNY SPS and my phenomenal professors in the applied theatre program with opening up this new and exciting career opportunity that I had never imagined.” - Linda Ames Key, Fulbright Specialist Award Winner for Rwanda Reconciliation Project, Education Director, Vital Theatre Company (NYC), M.A. in Applied Theatre, 2011

Revolutionary! It’s a fact. New York City Free Academy, predecessor to today’s City University of New York, opened new doors to higher education by offering a free education to any student eager to learn. Today, CUNY SPS is offering affordable, flexible learning opportunities to students seeking to earn a college degree or certificate.

CUNY SPS CUNY SPS launched CUNY’s first full accredited online degree—a revolutionary mode of higher education. At CUNY SPS, online degrees in business, communications, health information management, and psychology are well-established. We also offer the nation’s first online bachelor’s degree in disability studies, as well as new programs in nursing and information systems. Our in-person programs include a bachelors in human relations and an ensemble-based master’s degree in applied theatre. Students may apply for prior learning assessment and earn credit for learning gained outside a classroom: on a job, in the military, or through individual effort.

Timely! It’s a fact. With more miles of track than any other subway in the world, New York City’s subway gets you where you want to go 24/7. So does CUNY SPS. Our faculty have designed innovative programs, allowing our students to fulfill the demands of a job and family while studying and preparing for new career opportunities.

CUNY SPS Online courses also provide timely access to outstanding faculty. CUNY SPS professors are drawn from the City University’s more than 20 campuses and schools. We also draw on leading practitioners in the field. Among the faculty at CUNY SPS are the president-elect of the American Sociological Association, an expert on Chinese labor relations, and an immigration lawyer named one of the best by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Whether they teach online or inperson, CUNY SPS faculty take advantage of the latest education and communication technologies to maximize learning.

Investment! It’s a fact. In 1971 the NASDAQ opened as the first electronic stock exchange; today it is the world’s second-largest market for stocks (after the New York Stock Exchange). CUNY SPS was created in 2003; since then it has developed over 40 programs for earning undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, certificates, and advanced certificates.

CUNY SPS CUNY SPS believes in a simple but powerful idea: education is the best investment, particularly when affordable and rigorous programs prepare students for emerging career opportunities. CUNY SPS awards degrees in data analytics, urban studies, labor studies, nursing, information systems, communications and media, business, and disability studies, among others. We offer 25 certificates, including financial management, interactive technology and pedagogy, immigration, and transportation management. What defines our approach across these diverse careers? An emphasis on applied knowledge. As one graduate put it, “You can use what you learn today at your job tomorrow.”

Central! It’s a fact. A typical New York City taxi cab travels 70,000 miles per year, enough to travel around the world 2.8 times. Over 90% of taxi pickups occur in Manhattan. CUNY SPS is housed in a new, technologically sophisticated building in Midtown Manhattan.

CUNY SPS Our location at 119 West 31st Street is central to the homes and workplaces of millions of people as is the Joseph S. Murphy Institute located at 25 West 43rd Street. All our campuses are within easy walking distance of Penn and Grand Central Stations, all subway lines, and the PATH train. Thanks to the Internet, many of our exceptional programs are also available to anyone who is looking to advance professionally, prepare for a new career, or, equally important, grow personally.

Soaring! It’s a fact. In the early days of flight, Elmer Ambrose Sperry began manufacturing gyroscopes of his own invention in Brooklyn to help pilots navigate. Gyroscopes are still used on aircraft—and spacecraft—today. At CUNY SPS we’re inventing new ways to learn in New York City and, via the internet, around the world.

CUNY SPS Education is exhilarating, and CUNY SPS takes pride in the soaring ambitions of our more than 1800 graduates and 2200 current degree and certificate students. We provide a flight map to careers in demand so that you can experience many years of professional growth. We invite you to learn more by visiting our website at sps.cuny.edu or calling 212-652-CUNY.
