Have you seen the display in Fellowship Hall announcing our effort to help fund a new house with Habitat for Humanity? Phil Gray has made a roof for us to raise indicating where we are in our $1,000 goal. It takes $60,000 to build a Habitat house, so we are joining with other Disciples churches in the Tulsa area. We will not only help raise money, but we can also pitch-in to help with the construction when the time comes this Spring. But before we start, we need to raise the money. Our Chili Cook-Off Sunday at 5:30 p.m. is how we'll start. Six talented cooks have already signed up to bring their favorite chili. We'll get to taste them and decide which we like best. A basket will be along side of each chili to take your donation or “vote for that chili. The chili raising the most money will be the winner and the cook will be crowned "Bethany Chili Champ for 2013." Allison Fate has a fitting award to present. All the money will go toward buying the bricks in our display as we "raise the roof" on our Habitat house. Some may want to write their name on a brick with a $50 gift or more to raise the roof even higher. It sounds like a delicious way to help a needy family find a place to live, so come join us. You can bring something that goes with chili, or just come and have a great evening. See you this Sunday, January 20th! Outreach

What does civil conversation look like? I like theologian Bernard Lonergan's words. He names "transcendental imperatives": rules without which genuine conversation and understanding are not possible. "Be attentive, be intelligent, be responsible, be loving, and, if necessary, change." (Method in Theology, 1972, p. 231) In my opinion, civil conversations require rules such as these. We've accepted 9 proposals for presentations of 25 minutes each, to address the conference question, What should people of religious faith do to contribute to civil discourse in the United States? Visit the Re-Mind & Re-New Speaker page for the selected speakers and their topics. In between the presentations, participants will engage in conversation. The conversation moderator will be the Rev. Dr. Gary Blaine. Blaine is a pastor, educator, writer, and is currently the leader of a new worship community in Wichita and serves as a hospital chaplain. He has taught several courses for PTS in the past as well. - Gary Peluso-Verdend

 

Getting an annual flu vaccine can reduce the risk, and severity of the illness. It is usually offered in the fall and through the winter. Ask your doctor if the flu vaccine is right for you. The flu can be passed through coughing, sneezing, and contaminated surfaces, so washing your hands or using a hand sanitizer such as PURELL® regularly can help reduce your risk. Exercising regularly can help the immune system better fight off the germs that cause illness. Other healthy habits include eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and keeping your stress in check.

 If you do experience flu-like symptoms, the first thing you should do is contact your doctor. This will ensure that the best course of treatment is started early.
