el-leaf-phant This ‘El-leaf-phant’ is an environmentally friendly elephant. Mostly green and blue in colour. He is rather like the Green Man who is covered in greenery and represents the spirit of nature. Take a look between the leaves, there are birds, animals and little insects, which you may find in a woodland. How many can you spot? El-leaf-phant cares very much about the environment and looks after every little creature it meets.

I wanted to create a design for The Big Trunk Trail using a warm palette of complementing colours. I aimed to show my love of animals and nature within this artwork, by using some of my friendly animal characters integrated with animal patterns, that corresponded with the shape of the sculpture. I hope the artwork will make people smile and it will bring the viewer happiness.

sarah hesketh I’m an illustrator, muralist and art teacher based in the outskirts of London. I love designing anything to do with animals and nature, as there are so many amazing things to be inspired by within this topic! My favourite animals are dogs, but my selection of characters stretches from the tiny bee up to the towering giraffe. My largest artwork to date is a mural I created purely with spray paint and covers the side of a 3 storey building!

flypast Flypast is based on the history of Luton in building airplanes. Many of the street names in Luton are based on the airplanes built from the beginning of the 20th century. Edgar Percival set up his manufacturing company in 1936, where they built Percival Vega Gulls, Percival Proctors and twin engined Airspeed Oxfords. This design shows some of these aircraft as well as aircraft now seen at Luton Airport. At the bottom are written some of the names of aircraft associated with the manufacture at Luton.

materials Acrylic paint.

kathleen smith Kathleen designs and makes objects that are placed on the streets or public places. She has designed and painted many sculptures for trails around the UK. She also makes objects made from metal or 3D printed, that are made into trails based on history, street games or constructs installation.

poppy Poppy was partly inspired by the saying ‘Elephants never forget’. Poppies have been used to remember those we have lost. Although poppies more commonly used to remember those we have lost in war, the symbolism dates back to Greek and Roman mythology. I was moved to design Poppy to remember loved ones but also kept the design bright and cheerful.

you can leave your hat on

art00006

Loosely based on Luton’s history with hat making and The Hatters I wanted to have a bit of fun and create a design that would both celebrate hats but also make people smile. Elephants are very family orientated and I wanted to capture this sense of togetherness and community within my design. I tried to focus on hats that you would find in the UK and attempted to capture the character of my wrinkly friends so they look like they’re having fun.

butterphant With big floppy ears like huge butterfly wings, the Butterphant is not a difficult beast to imagine. But I’ve brought him to life by remodelling the ears and eyes, giving them a fabulous, glistening, metallic acrylic finish. In stark contrast, the body is in shades of grey to emulate his craggy wrinkly hide.

It will include the constellation and star names, and identify the zodiac signs whilst explaining their significance as a place to find planets. At a time when we might be limited in what we can do and where we can go, it’s important to remember the free sky show we have outside, every (cloudless!) night.

e-lephant E-lephant represents the modern age of technology with electric circuits carrying information and data almost as fast as we generate it. In a world that has become increasingly isolated in the COVID age, his circuits are a metaphor for how technology allows us to connect wherever we are, reminding us that we never need be truly alone. Even in the dark, his circuits glow brightly, representing hope and light at a time when we might feel lost and solitary.

nurture and grow The Forget-Me-Not is used as a symbol by the dementia society. It was important to me to combine the symbolism of the flowers with butterflies to create a message about the power of love and the human spirit. The blue flowers transforming into blue butterflies symbolise renewal and the life cycle. The design has hidden butterflies incorporated in the foliage for children to find. I hope it is a design that will give hope and comfort to those who engage with it on whatever level.

we will rise The phoenix celebrates the rebirth of both the town itself and of the individuals who have built new lives here. The dark smoky earth around the elephant’s feet represents the old lives that people have left behind, for whatever reason. The dark colour used is a special paint called Scorched Earth, which was created using ash collected from Kurdish fields in Iraq, where people’s crops were burnt. From these ashes, hope and kindness rise.

one big step It’s one small step to land on the moon, but one big step for an elephant. They weigh a lot more than humans, but it’s a very powerful rocket. Anyway, elephants are much lighter on their feet when gravity’s only one-sixth! So fasten your seat belt and prepare for touchdown. “Come in, Luton. LE1 has landed!”
