Letter From The Editor Welcome to Out of the Park Advertising! I’m so glad you decided to pick up my first addition to see what it all has to offer. Digital advertising, public relations, and marketing are on the rise. With an industry that is booming, it takes a dedicated company to lay the foundation for business success.

Hellman is that company. Hellman has been around for over 50 years and has been a front-runner for local as well as national businesses in their advertising campaigns. I am here to show my readers the unique aspect that Hellman takes through their ideas and designs that cannot be found anywhere else.

This all stems from the people that work inside the company to allow for collaborative work to flow.

Along with Hellman, Out of the Park Advertising slides into home with a focus on the Build Our Ballpark nonprofit. The company and nonprofit are both ran directly by Bob Hellman. Bob Hellman has dedicated his life to growing this established business and nonprofit that have continued to have immense sucess to this day.

Office Life at Hellman Waterloo, IA

Everyday at Hellman is a unique experience. With a welcoming office front for all clients and employees, the building itself feels like home.

Hellman’s culture is centered around employees from different areas, backgrounds, and career experiences.

That diversity is what truly makes the company what it is today.

Employees work on various projects assigned to them based on what department they’re in.

These can be anything from content made for John Deere, 3M, or many of the other companies Hellman does work for.

Food is a huge part of the daily life of Hellman.

Employees bring in different types of food each week for everyone in the office to enjoy.

Keeping a green office is important to the employees at Hellman. It allows them to stay more motivated and productive with their tasks.

Holiday themed parties are a big deal at the Hellman office. Employees get in the spirit of the different holidays each year to celebrate while taking a break from their projects and work.

Hellman is all about competition. The team members know what strategies and tasks need to be accomplished.

They take every project to the next level to reach the be results for their clients. The trophies to the left showcase Hellman’s hardwork through a variety of sales promotion contests.

Teamwork is utilized throughout the day at Hellman.

Collaboration between everyone is needed to make sure clients are getting the best quality work that the team can produce for them.

Creating the perfect set for a product that needs to be photographed is not easy. The team at Hellman is able to utilize their skills and tools to make some of the greatest photos for their clients to use.

Staying on task is important to everyone at Hellman.

There is always some sort of work to be done and Bob has created an office space to make sure that is done effectively to gain the best results.

The holidays are a time where Hellman creates their personalized Christmas wrapping paper. The employees look forward to the fresh design all year. The office is very festive this time of year.

There are multiple levels to the Hellman building.

Every employee has direct access to one another to continue to be collaborative and make the office an enjoyable place to be during the day.

Hardwork really pays off. In the Hellman office the work takes a lot of time and effort, but the ending products are always worth the struggle to make them as perfect as they can truly be.

There a countless awards here at the Hellman office.

There are so many different opportunities for this office to really display their work and really get credit for it as an office when there is a competition involved with it. This is another trophy won for audio & video at a sales promotion conference that Hellman participated in.

Hellman employees use an extensive amount of technology to complete the work that they are assigned on a daily basis. They are always helping one another out to have their products work the best to make the best content that will be given to their client in a short period of time.

The Evolution of

2007 Hellman Field opens up to the community for area kids to have a quality place to play baseball and learn about the game.

2008 Bob establishes Build Our Ballpark with a $90,000 gift towards keeping up on the development of Hellman Field.

2011 Renovations began on the Waterloo complex with the fields taking a look from the famous Yankee Stadium ballpark.

2012 Burton Field was built in Alden and Iowa Falls, Iowa with a cost of $150,000 to set it all up.

2015 Kruger Hemmen Field took a little over a year to build. It’s a symbolic complex in the town of Dike, IA and had countless sponsors.

2016 Run the bases 5K was created as a fundraiser for gaining more involvement towards gaining money for playing field restoration.

Build Our Ballpark

2009 Build Our Ballpark teams up with Waterloo and renovates the Tibbitts Fields Complex.

2010 Team B.O.B rides in RAGBRAI and raises over $100,000 for Build Our Ballpark through pledges and donations.

2013 Riverfront Sports Park Complex’s are plotted all over the Cedar Valley area. These fields see a lot of action and will continue for years to come.

2014 This ballpark is located in Atheron, CA. Bob Hellman partnered with MLB legacy Willie Mays to create this ballpark.

2017 All Play is the most recent ballpark with four total fields. This project costed $2.1 million to complete.

2018 This year, Build Our Ballpark is celebrating their 10th year anniversary. There have been nearly 40 playing fields built or restored.

ob Hellman is the founder of both Hellman and Build Our Ballpark. Bob began a passion for drawing and design back in high school then all the way through college into his first job.

That passion grew even further into the drive to establish his very own company from the ground up. Starting back in 1967, his vision to create a graphic design and art studio came to life in downtown Waterloo, Iowa.

He began the company with a net working capital investment of only $400. He was determined to make his mark on the industry while evolving even more into the advertising business through each project the Hellman team took on.

Bob was able to lay a firm foundation for his employees that make up Hellman into the successful company that it is now. From creative designs, sales, and account services, there are so many different ways that employees express their drive and creativity. Bob has hired the brightest employees that are immediately apart of the strong family at Hellman.

An employee’s values mean everything to really care about the position someone holds at Hellman, Bob implemented. At Hellman, they dedicate themselves to doing their best work for clients. Along with the importance of getting client work accomplished, Bob also cares for his employees. His long-term goal while he was running Hellman was to “help people grow in their careers while promoting a “business like” atmosphere.

Today, Hellman provides full-service advertising and marketing opportunities to those who utilize the services provided. Hellman has had tremendous growth in the past several decades while beginning as a small start-up company to eventually having upwards of 400 clients all around the country and in Canada. Bob believes that Hellman really stands out compared to other ad agencies due to the work that is put out to clients and the people who create that work who do it for Hellman.

When asked what his favorite project for a company that he has been apart of is, he said that creating annual reports for Con Edison would be at the top of the list. That company is located in New York and has had tremendous success thanks to Hellman. Con Edison is a one of the largest investor-owned companies in the United States. Bob is still very proud of the work that has been done for this company and the way it publicized everything Hellman truly does. Their self promotion activity that Hellman put on for them has been recognized and rewarded nationally, which brought in even more clients to his business.

The commitment to excellence is something that Bob consistently emphasized in his branding of Hellman. The consistency to only produce the best products and services for clients is what has been the base for the longterm success that this company has had all of these years and will continue to have for years to come.

Bob has gone through a variety of tasks to get to where he is now. Until recently, his main role in the company has been to serve as the chairman of the board to help direct the agency to look at what needs to be accomplished in the future. He also serves as the executive director of Build Our Ballpark. In that role, his main goals are to reach out to communities to bring awareness and funding for a variety of projects to help create ballparks all over.

Bob loves reading books that expand his knowledge on the industry and baseball. As you can see his office is full of them.

When interviewing him, he stated that, “where we are today as a company is all due to evolution. You won’t have success unless you make it yourself.” Bob is proud of how far his company and nonprofit have evolved into a staple piece of the Cedar Valley and beyond. Throughout Bob’s time at Hellman, he has gone through various projects, clients, and companies to get to where he is now. He has seen how they all work and what aspects of them bring in success to their business along with his.

Bob has always been the type of person to help others either with their work projects or by starting up a new ballpark complex for youths in a specific area. Many may wonder where all this drive came from after already becoming an entreprenuer of his own company. Bob’s genuine passion for youth baseball and how it has impacted his life is what made him want to begin the nonprofit that would eventually become the second biggest project of his life.

Build Our Ballpark began back in 2008 right after Hellman Field opened up back in 2007. Once Hellman Field was built, Bob knew he wanted to do more and give back to the community that established he youth. Hellman had a vision to create a safe space for children who wanted to learn the greatest game of our American past time, baseball.

Bob has always been a life-long baseball fan. Once that opportunity arose to build his first ballpark, he knew he could and should focus on creating fields to give back to the game that gave him so much.

The first single ballpark project was built from the ground up near Cunningham School for Excellence, which is located on the East side of Waterloo. This had great significance to Bob as this is the area where he first began to play ball himself as well. When Bob Hellman had first started the nonprofit, there were roughly 1,100 boys and girls playing baseball or softball in the Waterloo, Iowa area.

Build Our Ballpark strongly promotes teamwork, character strengthening, building pride, and teaching life skills. Bob wanted every kid who steps onto one of his fields to feel each of those qualities whether they hit a homerun or give it their best shot on the plate. There are numerous complexes spread out in the Cedar Valley along with one in California area at this time.

Bob always has endless support from his wife who consistently pushes him to be the best he can be.

The one field that is located in California is actually dedicated to Willie Mays, who is an MLB hall of famer that decided it would be a great idea to continue to spread the ability of creating ballparks even in different parts of the country for kids. The Homer Field is located in Atheron, California has been up since 2008 and is a great way to show how Build Our Ballpark is really making a name for itself all over the place. This was a huge milestone for the team members of Build Our Ballpark and Bob as well. They never thought that their nonprofit could ever become this big and change so many lives of kids who use these fields.

Right now there are fifteen in Waterloo, thirteen in Dike, eight in Parkersburg, and two in Iowa Falls. There are also many more in surrounding towns in the area that are either under construction or in the works to be made here in the future. There are a total of 48 ballpark and sports complexs that were created to help continue to love of baseball in the Cedar Valley area alone.

Today, there are about 1,900 boys and girls playing baseball or softball in the area thanks to continuous generousity of Build Our Ballpark “Bob has had a lifelong love affair and all those who with baseball.”- Tony Luetkhans, support it.

Hellman Employee There is still many more ballparks and sports complexes to be made, which comes with time and money from supporters of the cause. Bob will continue to work with Build Our Ballpark for as long as he can to continue to make genuine impacts in the lives of the kids who use the fields and sports complexes that he has helped establish since he began the nonprofit over ten years ago.

Bob Hellman also creates blogs for followers of the nonprofit to see what new events have been taking place along with what he is currently working on for future projects. This is a great way to stay up to date on all things that Bob is working on to expand Build Our Ballpark even more.

The company plans to continue to complete the work that Bob and the rest of the Hellman employees alike have accomplished since it first began over 50 years ago.

Bob believes that VGM Group is great company to take over everything he has put into with Hellman. They represent his company the best and he knows they will do great work to continue his legacy. Bob mentioned in his interview that keeping and growing client connections is what they’re the best at, so that will be something he looks forward to seeing here in the futrue with the way he company goes.

VGM Group also has a company culture with success parallel to Hellman’s that will be needed to continue to grow the company even further than it already is now. Bob would like to see Hellman be taken to a more digital presence as VGM Group begins to transition and shift the company in the way they’ve strucutred it. A stronger sales force is also something he thinks that is necessary to help expand the company through VGM even more as well.

This fall, after consideration of where Bob was at with the company, he decided it would be in the best interest of Hellman to retire and sell it to continue the excellent work that he has put into it. In October of 2018 Hellman became acquired by VGM Group, local company stationed in Waterloo with other branches alike.

Bob Hellman’s dedication to the game of baseball has continued to be a big part of his life to this day.

Bob says what he will miss the most is Hellman’s sense of humor that each and every single one of the employees have. The building, which is over 113 years old has been the center of what makes Hellman, Hellman. It has been a second “home” for his family as well as his employees who have enjoyed the workspace of such a historic building.

The holiday company parties were big highlights for Bob, especially during Christmas time. He know they were a great way to keep the spirit alive to take a break from tough projects and deadlines that were in the way of enjoying the season that brings so much joy.

This board was created when Hellman Field’s construction was underway and prior to Build Our Ballpark was established.
