2013 Women’s Symposium

Welcome from the Chairs

It is with our greatest pleasure to welcome you to the 8th Annual Missoula Businesswomen’s Network 2013 Women’s Symposium. With our new venue, the University Center on the beautiful campus of the Universityy of Montana, we have the opportunity to provide a full day of twelve very talented presenters and forty eight exceptional exhibitors, all sharing their business and personal wisdom, while utilizing the University’s latest technology. Our keynote presenter, Sarah Calhoun, brings her own wisdom and experiences as she shares how she grew a very small business of crafting workpants for women into a multi-national hub right in the middle of her rural community, White Sulphur Springs, Montana. The MBN Women’s Symposium is a not-for-profit event for women and men. It is the goal of MBN to sponsor this event for the women of Montana, as a day of learning and sharing with each other. We all have our own talents, skills, and experiences to improve the lives of women everywhere, and this is the time and place to share those talents and grow. How fitting that this year our theme is … inspiring

Blossom!

Sarah Calhoun The 2013 Women’s Symposium Committee would like to introduce our keynote speaker, Sarah Calhoun, founder of R Red ed Ants Pants. Sarah has a long list of impressive credentials. Just to mention a few, she is the 2012 National Women in Business Champion for the SBA, 2011 Entrepreneur of the Year for the State of Montana, and has been featured on thee White House website and selected to attend a Forum on Jobs and Economic Development. Sarah Calhoun grew up on a farm in Connecticut and received her degree in Environmental Studies from Gettysburg College. After five years of working outdoor education jobs, including instructing for Outward Bound and leading trail crews, she was fed up with wearing men’s work pants. opy p of of How How to t Start Sta tart rrtt a She moved to Bozeman in 2004, where she purchased a copy Small Business for Dummies. Upon learning what a business plan was, she promptly wrote one, started designing pants, and Red Ants Pants was born. Wanting to live in a rural Montana ranching town, in 2005 she moved to White Sulphur Springs and set up her office and international headquarters, storefront, and distribution center in an old historic saddle shop. In October 2006, she opened the doors to the first ever company dedicated to making work pants for women. Finally … workwear for women! The pants are made in the USA and that will not change. Known for its grass roots marketing efforts, including ‘Tour de Pants’, the direct sales business model is proving effective, even in tough economic times. In 2011, Red Ants Pants put on the first annual Red Ants Pants Music Festival, where 6,000 fans came to dance their pants off in a cow pasture listening to some top bands, including Lyle Lovett. The Red Ants Pants Foundation was formed as the non-profit branch of the project, in support of women’s leadership, working family farms and ranches, and rural communities. With a recent trip to the White House and keynoting at several national speaking events, Calhoun continues to be amazed how this company has become so much more than just a pair of pants. “It’s neat to show that we can do big things in small towns.” she reflects. A new Red Ants Pants ad campaign that profiles kickass women of history uses a tagline that resonates with the culture of the company: “Step into these pants and see what you can do.” Senator Max Baucus, after touring the Red Ants Pants shop, was quoted saying “Sarah Calhoun has courage, grit and a real Montana work ethic - no wonder they chose her as this year’s National Women in Business Champion! Sarah is a role model for young women and has the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that make Montana proud,” said Baucus. “It’s important that we support folks like Sarah and all of our small businesses because they truly are the engines of our economy in Montana.” The Symposium Committee is truly excited to have Sarah be a part of our 2013 MBN Women’s Symposium. We look forward to a wonderful event. www.redantspants.com

“Do These Genes Make My Butt Look Big?” If we do not reverse our current trend, chronic disease will continue to devastate Americans’ health, lead to millions more preventable deaths, and will ultimately bankrupt our health care system. We can change the direction in which our nation is headed if we act now. What this requires is a change not just in perspective but also in practice. We need to move away from our current system that is focused on treating disease to one focused on preventing chronic conditions from occurring in the first place. Join Dr. Anthony on a journey using the science of genetics, lifestyle, and health to save lives, save money, and save health care.

“The Cycle of Renewal” Just as in nature, where the seasonal cycle produces periods of blossoms and dormancy, there is a natural cycle each of us experiences that contributes to us being at our best. During this interactive and engaging presentation, Clare will describe a simple framework that provides insight into: • What contributes to being at our best in our various roles (family, work, personal, community member) • Understanding that periods of “dormancy” are normal and necessary, and how to make the most of them • Ways to contribute to the blossoming of others

JILL MH TABER J grew up on her family’s cattle ranch in Whitehall, Montana – spending weekends and summers riding and training horses, moving cattle, building fence, running haying equipment, competing in rodeos, and having fun with her family. A shy cowgirl at heart, Jill had to, like many people, develop her confidence as she built her professional and personal network in Missoula. She is happily married to her husband, Nick Taber and they had their first child in September of 2012. Jill enjoys reading, the outdoors, spending time on the ranch, sewing, and roping.

“If A Cowgirl from the South End of a NorthBound Cow Can Do It…” Jill Taber grew up on a ranch in Southwest Montana – riding and training horses, trailing cattle, building fence, running haying equipment, and having fun with her family. Though she remains involved with her family’s ranch, she transitioned into her professional career in 2007. As a self-described “shy cowgirl,” she, like many professionals, needed to learn to build relationships and networks in a town where she didn’t know many people, because, also like many professionals, her career depended on it. Jill will share her journey of wanting more – personally and professionally – including the people, ideas, and strategies that helped her along the way. Additionally, in the workshop, participants will work through an exercise to create their own statement of purpose – the starting point for relationship success.

Exercise is Cancer Wonder Drug The latest “wonder drug” for cancer isn’t a drug at all – but exercise. That’s what a British cancer charity had to say in a new report detailing the benefits of exercise for cancer patients. “Cancer patients would be shocked if they knew just how much of a benefit physical activity could have on their recovery and long term health,” Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, said in a written statement. Macmillan’s “Move More” report looked at 60 studies and surveyed over 400 health professionals to show how important exercise was to cancer treatment.

At Tompkins & Peters we do more than just taxes. We are ingrained in every aspect of business, from litigation support to valuing your businesses worth. We can be your team leader in starting your new business or we can assist with your existing business needs. We believe it is our job to help you maximize your potential with the attention you deserve. Celebrating 25 years of exemplary service, Tompkins & Peters Certified Public Accountants and Advisors will teach, direct, and lead you.

Being a M Member Pays Off

The report said doing the recommended levels of 150 minutes per week could reduce a breast cancer patient’s risk of recurrence or dying by 40 percent and a prostate cancer patient’s risk of dying by 30 percent. Exercise also helps curtail side effects like fatigue, depression, osteoporosis, and heart disease for all cancer patients. More physical activity can also reduce the risk of colon cancer by as much as 50 percent, the report said. “’It doesn’t need to be anything too strenuous, doing the gardening, going for a brisk walk, or a swim all count,” Devane said. Macmillan’s chief medical officer, oncologist Dr. Jane Maher, said in a written statement that health care professionals need to undergo a “cultural change” and make exercise an integral part of cancer care. The report found over half of general practitioners, oncologists, and nurses don’t tell their patients the benefits of physical exercise. Maher once counted herself as one of these uninformed physicians. “The advice that I would have previously have given to one of my patients would have been to ‘take it easy’,” Maher said. “This has now changed significantly.” Source: mirror.co.uk, webmd.com and cbsnews.com

Resolution Success

Put some thought into your 2013 New Year’s resolution to ensure success. Take the time to write down the speciďŹ cs of what you want to accomplish, how long it will take, and what to plan for along the way. It’s important to re-visit those resolutions a few times a year to assess what you’ve done, what changes are needed, and where you’re going from here. A great way to plan a new ďŹ tness goal is to think of the acronym SMART. In addition to each of the SMART categories, make sure to address the following: SpeciďŹ c – What exactly do you want to accomplish? Don’t just say you want to be healthier. Write down exactly what will make you healthier. Measurable – Whether it’s a speciďŹ c weight, a faster mile run, or a stronger squat weight - make it measurable in some way. Attainable – Is your goal truly attainable? Make sure you know for certain you can achieve it. Reasonable – Don’t set yourself up for failure with unrealistic expectations. For example, eating 500 calories a day or working out three hours a day is not reasonable. Time-sensitive – Set an assessment date. This will motivate you to work toward a deadline without procrastination.

• First, make sure your goal is positive. Focusing negatively on your downfalls and bad habits will not motivate you or keep you on track. • Break down your one big goal into smaller, easy-to-achieve goals. That way you recognize your progress daily or weekly instead of focusing on the long-term goal that takes months to achieve. • Plan for slip-ups, but also plan to get back on track without dwelling on the past. Nobody is perfect. If needed, modify your resolution. It’s not set in stone and can be altered at any time. • Make sure your resolution is compatible with your schedule and energy levels so that you aren’t setting yourself up for failure. Decide whether going to the gym or working out at home will be compatible with your work schedule, family life , and additional travel time. • Don’t jump right into a workout routine that you aren’t able to maintain longer than a week. Start out slow and steady and reap the smaller rewards that add up to big results. If you feel a little overwhelmed with where to begin, there is hope. Enlisting a friend or spouse to keep you accountable is helpful and free. Simply checking in with a friend every day keeps you in check and focused. Having a group of co-workers or a group ďŹ tness class is another fun way to start a workout program. Regardless how you stay on track, be sure to be honest with yourself and ďŹ nd ways to make it rewarding and enjoyable. Kayla Johnson, Owner Top Notch Training

An Investor’s Best Friend

Your Banking Family.

Meet diversification, patience, and consistency. Any investor would do well to call on three friends during the course of his or her financial life: diversification, patience, and consistency. Regardless of how the markets perform, they should be a part of your investment philosophy.

Brian MacDonald

Bill Nolan

Larry Williams Andrew West Steve Bryant Rebecca Babin

Diversification The saying “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” has real value when it comes to investing. In a bear market, certain asset classes may perform better than others. Ditto for a bull market. If your assets are mostly held in one kind of investment (say, mostly in mutual funds, or mostly in CDs or money market accounts), you could be hit hard by stock market losses, or alternately lose out on potential gains that other kinds of investments may be experiencing. So there is an opportunity cost, as well as risk. This is why asset allocation strategies are used in portfolio management. A financial advisor can ask you about your goals and tolerance for risk and assign percentages of your assets to different classes of investments. This diversification is designed to suit your preferred investment style and your objectives. Patience Impatient investors obsess on the day-to-day doings of the stock market. Have you ever heard of “stock picking” or “market timing”? How about “day trading”? These are all attempts to exploit short-term fluctuations in value. These investing methods might seem fun and exciting if you like to micromanage, but they will add stress and anxiety to your life, and they are a poor alternative to a long-range investment strategy built around your life goals. Consistency Most people invest a little at a time, within their budget, and with regularity. They invest $50 or $100 or more per month in their 401(k) and similar investments through payroll deduction or automatic withdrawal. In essence, they are investing on “autopilot” to help themselves build wealth for retirement and for long-range goals. Investing regularly (and earlier in life) helps you to take advantage of the power of compounding as well.

Are diversification, patience, and consistency part of your investing approach? Make sure they are part of your approach. If you don’t have a long-range investment strategy, talk to a qualified financial advisor today. Diversification of your overall investment portfolio does not assure a profit or protect against a loss in declining markets. Provided by Mark L. Sleeping Spaces

Creating Home Spaces to Enhance Wellbeing What are you doing to achieve a healthy indoor climate? Is your home a reflection of your personality or a glorified magazine ad? Do you display highlights from your travels, interests, and loved ones? Everything you do in your home affects your health and wellbeing. This is because we spend a large amount of time in our home. We also complete many different functions and tasks while occupying our home. Whether or not our homes reflect us, our dreams, and our goals, we most definitely reflect the atmosphere of our homes. For example; when sleeping spaces are in chaos, your sleeping patterns reflect that. Calm sleeping habits are promoted by sleeping spaces designed with soft colors, natural materials, and without noise pollution from a television set.

How we sleep affects our day and long-term health. Sleeping spaces provide two important retreat functions: sleeping and intimacy. Good sleep depends on the right bed, soft natural linens, and a soothing atmosphere. Spend the time and money to acquire the right bed for you and consider linens made from natural fibers only. Intimacy and pre-sleep relaxation depends on minimal external disruptions such as a television set or telephone. Attention to creating a truly dark space is required for optimum sleep. This includes removing or covering the small pinpoints of light coming from common electronic equipment. A healthy home is a safe place that protects you from environmental elements both outdoor and indoor. Also, a place that allows you to be the best person you can be in health and spirit. Awareness allows you notice how spaces affect your mood and ability to get task done efficiently with minimal effort. I challenge you to take a fresh look at you home space. There are probably changes you can make immediately. The goal is to make your home a healing environment for you and your family to flourish with health, energy, and a passionate spirit. by Susan Boelman, NCIDQ A certified Interior Designer with 26 years experience. Focused on showing people how to create interior environments that promote their best selves while they live, work, play, and pray. She enjoys sharing knowledge and tips on her blog, DesignInspires.com and manufactures a positive living product line, Designversation.com.

Living Spaces Consider the rooms in your home as spaces used to complete tasks. How does the space and “stuff” you fill it with make you feel, and does it assist you in performing a task or function? Living spaces are for relaxing, entertaining, playing games, and spending time together. Design this space to meet individual needs, not filled with a prepackaged living room set developed as a standard by furniture manufacturers. Highlight individuality and emotional warmth that is specific to you and your family rather then replicating a magazine ad.

Bathing Spaces Our bathing spaces are basically for hygiene and cleanliness. With this in mind, bathing spaces should clean, simple, and healthy. How clean can a person be if the space is dirty, disorganized, smelly, and filled with synthetic materials? Use natural products that dry quickly inhibiting mold and mildew. Look for natural cotton towels and floor mats, seas sponges, and hemp mitts for scrubbing. Clean soap scum with a water and vinegar solution. The atmosphere of bathing spaces should reflect pleasure, health, and relaxation.

Eating Spaces Food preparation and dining spaces are a gathering place for the home and are very task orientated. They are where family and friends gather to eat, have discussions, and complete projects. This is one space to really become aware of pollutants such as cleaners, wasteful appliances, cabinets composed of particle board, gases from stoves, and plastics. Have fresh produce, strings of onions, and herbs out for everyone to see, instilling a healthy diet. Keep counters clean, brightly lit, and clutter to a minimum. The space should be well ventilated and have a window that lets in lots of light, as well as offers an air exchange.

Courage to Move through Fear into Success Are you afraid and frustrated? If you are having difficulty turning problems into opportunities, you may be ‘dis’couraged or lacking in courage. You may have a need to build your self-esteem in order to overcome fear, doubts, and frustrations that are impacting the life you deserve to live. Having courage does not mean that you are free of problems. It does mean that you are able to meet life’s challenges and move forward in a more resilient manner. You will become empowered when you recognize and acknowledge your own ability to move through fear into success.

Courage is Movement Forward Any time you take action and move toward a goal, you set a process in place that will overcome negative thoughts and experiences. The Universe rewards those who know what they want and take immediate action. Sometimes, the most courageous thing you can do is to say; “This is a negative place in my life, and I want to change my direction and not remain stuck here.” Making a decision to overcome fear or to just walk through the doubt is frequently the catapult to success in many areas of life

Self-Awareness Quiz • How do you encourage yourself when you are afraid? • Do you recognize that you and you alone own the problem? • Do you have old family beliefs that are holding you back? • Are you sometimes suffering from paralysis of perfection? • What decision will you make today that will move you forward from a stuck place? You are invited to claim a free e-course on overcoming shyness and building self-esteem and courage at http:// www.ConfidenceClues.com. You will be so glad you did. Thanks for joining our community of caring parents, family members, coaches, teachers and mentors who want to help raise a generation of responsible adults who respect others. © Judy Helm Wright, best-selling author and speaker

Encourage Yourself to Take the First Step By making a decision to overcome what may seem overwhelming, you will be moving forward as opposed to remaining in a state of stagnation and paralysis. Many people are stuck in miserable situations because they are waiting for someone or something outside of themselves to decide what to do or to save them from their misery. Others may be vested in keeping you stuck. If you change and move forward, it may disrupt their safety net. While you want to respect their opinions, your life is your responsibility. You may be looking at problems in a restricted and narrow framework. You may be basing your fear and doubt on old beliefs that no longer serve you. You may be replaying old family tapes in your head that keep you from stepping out into the future with courage and daring. Get unstuck in life by making a decision to move forward.

Peel Away Old Belief Systems By getting to the root cause of your fears and doubts, you can examine them in the light and reframe them for the future. This will enable you to function in a more satisfying and rewarding manner. You become what you are through your decisions and choices. It takes a great deal of courage to do self-awareness and become more authentic. Lack of courage is often expressed in the decision not to make a decision. When you choose not to make a decision, you are allowing others to run and rule your life. When you don’t make a choice, you are living in default mode. You deserve much better than that.

Vision Impossible? Finding your life’s calling. At some point in our lives, many of us set out to find our true life work – the calling we are meant to pursue during our time on Earth. But how do we enact this vision, and how do we find our vision in the first place? Here are some thoughts from my experience in this pursuit. First, our vision doesn’t usually come to us all at once, in a flash. We rarely see the big picture, but instead we see one step at a time, and when we take that step, we see the next. Second, developing our calling happens in an iterative way, and it begins with action. We take a small action, and the results of our work lead us to the next piece of our vision and our next act. Vision doesn’t develop by us thinking about it in our heads; it grows and matures as we try different actions in the world and see where they take us. Third, our calling isn’t the one thing we do best or the one thing we can do that is needed most in the world. Our calling takes bits and pieces from all parts of our lives – our work skills, our hobbies, our passions, our flaws – and it melds them together into the unique offering that is who we are. And finally, in order to truly see our life work, we have to be open to all possibilities. It’s easy for our brains to ignore or not even hear options which are different from how we currently perceive ourselves, or which are scary or seem unacceptable to us or our loved ones at first glance. But let’s face it, it isn’t a vision if it’s more of the same of what we’ve been doing all our lives. Any life calling which is worth its salt takes us outside our comfort zone and demands that we grow make wee ca life have ow wa and nd m a e the ak th he most most s w can n off tthe he llif ifee we if w h avve been given.
