News in Brief Arbor Day tree tags quantify trees’ dollar value The Heartland Tree Alliance and its community partners will be hanging tree tags during the month of April in celebration of Arbor Day. The large tree tags are labeled with the annual, estimated cumulative dollar value created by a single tree. The dollar values were calculated using the U.S. Forest Service’s i-Tree Streets software, which calculates the benefits based on a tree’s species and diameter, the land use the tree is closest to, and its location in the U.S. The benefits include energy savings, property value enhancement, carbon dioxide sequestration, storm water retention and air quality. Tree tags are expected to pop up in cities all over the region, including Gladstone, Kansas City, Liberty, Parkville. The tags encourage people to think about the role urban trees have in making communities healthy. Arbor Day is an annual holiday that celebrates the role of trees in people’s lives and promotes tree planting and care. National Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday in April, and each state celebrates Arbor Day on a date that is appropriate for tree-planting in that region. Missouri celebrates Arbor Day the first Friday in April. HTA is a program of Bridging The Gap, the Kansas City region’s leading nonprofit dedicated to volunteerism and sustainability. Donations can be made online through the Tree Fund at www.treesformycity. com. Donors have option of selecting from one of 17 city partners. Once a city’s fund reaches $1,000, HTA organizes a tree-planting workday with them. Last year, residents donated $10,000 to the regional Tree Fund and the Dunn Family Foundation matched every donation, raising a total of $20,000 toward tree-planting efforts in our region.

VICTORY honorees will be announced in June and presented at the Harvest Ball on Nov. 15. Proceeds from the Ball and Adorn Style Show & Brunch Sept. 20 benefit nonprofit organizations that primarily assist people in need in the Northland. Since 1987, HBS has provided nearly $7 million to 60 organizations.

Health Institute. The annual rankings measure health factors including graduation rates, obesity, smoking, unemployment, access to health foods, water and air quality and income. In the 2014 study, Clay County ranked seventh in health factors and 12th in health outcomes. The county ranked seventh and 13th in the respective categories in the 2013 study. Factoring into the health outcome and factor rankings were the county’s top-10 marks in the subcategories of length of life, health behaviors and clinical care access, and social and economic factors. He said he enjoyed being a recruiter and talking about his Army career to potential recruits. Cruz plans to return to Fort Leonard Wood after his tour of recruiting to join his combat engineer family.

“The Army is like a brotherhood, one big family, and the soldiers I have served with at other duty stations, well (we) still talk every week,” he said. Serving, family and off time are important to Cruz. In his down time, Cruz is edging his way to a law enforcement career by pursuing on a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with Post University on the Army’s tuition assistance program. Funding of Missouri veterans homes needs to be addressed AMERICAN LEGION POST 626

Veteran Organizations from all over the state, including Gladstone’s Bennett & Dennis Herrick Memorial American Legion Post 626, sent representatives to participate in a rally called out by the Missouri Association of Veterans Organizations on April 9. The responding organizations included the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League and many others. The mission of this gathering was to bring to the attention of the governor and legislature the need to restore the Veterans Commission Capital Improvements Trust Fund to its original purpose and to restore general revenues to satisfy operating funds for the Missouri Veterans Homes. For the last two years, the governor’s budget and the one passed by the legislature has not had any general revenue funds allocated for operating expenses of the state’s veterans homes. This resulted in the trust fund being used for operating expenses when it is supposed to be used for capital improvements such as major remodels and the construction of new homes. The state is not contributing to its own veterans homes. New money is coming from gaming entrance fees, the VA per

Because of the drain to the trust fund and lack of capital improvements, the wait list for beds is near 1,800 with the list growing at an average rate of 30 per month. A total of $25 million needs to be restored to the Veterans Commission Budget to replace the revenue funds removed by the legislature, and it would still take three to five years to restore the fund after the legislature makes the commitment. At that rate, the waiting list for beds will be approximately 3,000 for 2017 thru 2020. Bennett & Dennis Herrick Memorial American Legion Post 626 calls on its membership

and concerned citizens of Missouri to contact their senators and representatives in the state legislature and urge them to restore the Veterans Commission Capital Improvements Trust Fund to its original purpose and make up the difference through general revenue. With a current membership of 2.4 million wartime veterans, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veteran’s affairs, Americanism, and youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 14,000 posts across the nation.

Gladstone Dispatch A9 FIRST ROBOTICS

Up Next preps for championship event Northland team making impact in competition and community By Ryne Dittmer Fresh off of claiming the FIRST Robotics Competition Greater Kansas City Regional’s top honor, members of the Up Next team are preparing for a trip to the FIRST Championship. In March the team won the regional Chairman’s Award, given to the team that embodies the goals and purpose of FIRST, earning a spot among the 400 teams that will participate in the championship event Wednesday to Saturday, April 23 to 26, in St. Louis. “It was overwhelming. It was such a huge blessing,” said Cullan Fritts of Kearney about winning the award. “We had been working so hard night and day to put it together. You got to see that pay off.” Up Next, composed primarily of homeschooled high school students from across the Northland, was founded in 2010. Each year the team participates in the FIRST Robotics Competition and spends six weeks designing and building a robot capable of completing the season’s assigned game. This season’s game, Aerial Assist, challenged teams to design a robot that can navigate a 25-foot-by-54-foot field and shoot balls through high and low goals.

“We get into three groups once we know what the game is, and each brainstorm and present their ideas. Then we talk though all of that to decide what is the best overall robot. Once we figure that out, it’s all down to logistics,” Jeanette Lawrence of Gladstone said. During the two-and-ahalf-minute matches, teams are placed on alliances of three robots and compete against another alliance to score the most points. Points are awarded by shooting balls through the two levels of goals and completing assists by passing the balls between robots. “The match feels like 30 seconds or so. Before every match we talk with our alliance and have a plan and backup plan,” Joseph Crayton of Gladstone said. Team members said their robot, complete with a spring catapult, is known for its accurate aim and assisting skills. But beyond building and competing, the Up Next students said the program was about giving back to their community, primarily through the Hero Project. “The Hero Project is an initiative we started to help disabled veterans. One of our mentors said he had a disabled friend who needed help leashing and unleashing his service dog,”

Zane Canon of Smithville said. “We’re always on the look for projects, and we pounced at that for something to do, and it’s been a great experience.” Members of the team designed mechanisms that were able to help Ron Gulick leash and unleash his service dog and eat meals independently for the first time in eight years. After helping Gulick, the team worked with John Weinburgh, a veteran from Omaha, Neb., who was wounded in a military training accident, to build a device to help him pick up items. “The device allows him to pick up stuff that is on the ground and that he needs to pick up without calling for someone to pick it up,” Joe Jackson of Liberty said. “That was a very happy moment when we met him and fit the arm. It makes you feel as if what you’re doing isn’t just building a robot, you’re building something that’s changing someone’s life.” Working closely with the Wounded Warriors Family Support organization, Up Next has launched its program on a national scale, connecting other FIRST teams with veterans in their area to help design products to enhance their lives. “It’s great being able to give back a little bit to

The Hero Project will take a primary spot in the team’s presentations at the FIRST Championship later this month. Along with

showcasing their community service, team members said they were looking forward to competing with some of the world’s best robotics teams and being part of the camaraderie of the event.

“When I joined last year, this was the first big team thing I’d done,” Kooper Holbrook of Kearney said. “This is the best program that I’ve been a part of in my high school years.”
