Arcobasso’s serves taste of St. Louis in Northland

Arcobasso’s Restaurant

Restaurant adds Sunday hours, offers thin-crust pizza, other Italian-American fare By Amy Neal Joe and Diane Arcobasso have tried to leave the restaurant business, but after developing a taste for feeding people, they can’t stay out of the kitchen. The couple opened their latest venture, Arcobasso’s Restaurant, in Gladstone last summer and extended their hours of operation to include Sundays in December. Promotional materials describe it as a neighborhood family-style place that welcomes all ages. Diane said they want their customers to consider Arcobasso’s a weekly hangout where they can enjoy a good meal, not a place reserved only for special occasions. “We’re all about family and community,” Diane said. “Everyone comes in and talks to everyone.” The Italian-American menu includes St. Louis-style thin-crust pizza, pasta, chicken entrées, salads, sandwiches, appetizers, beer and wine. There is also a kids menu. “We condensed our menu to have a more medium price point,” Diane said. Joe said the pizza offered in Gladstone wasn’t available at their other restaurants, but their food-preparation techniques are family traditions.

“We do the same things we did when my uncle opened up in 1971,” he said. Since Tom Arcobasso opened a restaurant in North St. Louis County in 1972, several other relatives have gotten into the business, opening Domenico’s in Florissant, Paisano’s in St. Louis, Drassina’s in St. Louis, Concetta’s in St. Charles, Domenico’s at the Lake in Osage Beach, Domenico’s in Jefferson City, Arcobasso’s in South St. Louis, Dairy Delight in Washington, Mo., and T. Arcobasso’s in St. Charles. Joe and Diane Arcobassos’ journey to the Northland began when they sold their longtime St. Louis restaurant about nine years ago. “We wanted to go somewhere new and be close to our kids,” Joe said. The couple’s son lives in the metro area, and their daughter planned to move here. While that hasn’t happened yet, she did help her parents open Arcobasso’s and train its staff. “We instill in (the staff) that this is your home away from home,” Diane said. The restaurant employs about 20 to 25 workers, 10 of whom have fulltime schedules, including Joe and Diane. Restaurant/Page A4

legislation to legalize pot,” Senate Democratic Leader Jolie Justus flatly declared on the legislature’s first day. Justus is one of the leading sponsors of legislation to reduce criminal sentences for first-time, non-violent offenders. The House leader of similar efforts, including legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, also gave the Colorado approach of full legalization little chance in Missouri’s legislature. But Rory Ellinger, D-St. Louis County, has sponsored legislation to reduce the penalty for possession of a small amount of marijuana. “One tiny mistake becomes a lifetime of punishment,” Ellinger said of the current criminal penalties. “Are we really that punitive in Missouri?” But as for full legalization, Ellinger expressed concerns. “I’m not a big promoter of that ... I don’t think the state’s ready for it.” If legalized, Ellinger said it should be regulated like alcohol and banned for minors. “I don’t really know if we want to create an atmosphere where 18-year-olds can go and get marijuana,” he said.

Who says garage sales — like flowers — start popping up in spring? The Friends of the Atkins-Johnson Farm will hold its annual Winter Garage Sale on Saturday, Jan. 18. From 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. that day, the gym at Hillside Christian Church, 900 NE Vivion Road, will be filled with antiques, tools, clothing and household items of all kinds. All proceeds will benefit Gladstone’s historic AtkinsJohnson Farm and museum. The farmhouse and grounds, located in the Big Shoal Heritage Area, can be accessed from the entrance at 6607 NE Antioch Road, across the street from White Chapel Funeral Home. Volunteers will be on hand at the church from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, to accept donations of good, sellable items for the next day’s sale. Donors are asked to have items already priced upon delivery. Tax donation forms will be available. “This will be a truly great way for the public to help the farm, and of course for people to get out and relieve their cabin fever,” said Carol Rudi, president of the Friends of the — Missouri Digital News Atkins-Johnson Farm.

Appellate court to convene at William Jewell For the fourth consecutive year, the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District will convene court at William Jewell College in Liberty. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, the court will hear oral arguments in Room 221 of the Yates-Gill College Union. A three-judge panel consisting of Western District Judges Cindy Martin and Gary Witt and Missouri Supreme Court Judge Zel Fischer will sit on the four cases on the docket, according to a press release. Martin will serve as presiding judge. All three judges are William Jewell graduates. Fischer also teaches a course — American Jurisprudenc — at the college during the fall semester. Chief Judge James said the cases would be appeals from previously held trials in area circuit courts. The judges will hear attorneys argue whether the trials had errors that should cause them to be retried or the trial court’s judgment

reversed, he said. The judges will take a break between cases to answer questions about the court system in Missouri. Although the court convenes regularly at its courthouse in downtown Kansas City, it also convenes frequently in other locations within the Western District, which includes 45 counties in central and western Missouri. “It is important for the court to convene oral arguments outside of Kansas City,” Martin said. “This gives individuals an opportunity to observe a part of the judicial system they normally do not see. We hope those attending will gain a better understanding of the court’s function.”

Tara Prosser is the lunch lady. She works at the Middle School. Leaving after lunch, she heads back to her modest ranch home and her Weimaraners.

Some days she stops at the local EMT offices to say a quick hello to her husband, Jeff, the Chief Paramedic Officer, a giant, friendly man. They live here, in Joplin, Missouri, a town of 50,000 squatting in the southwest corner of the state, in Jasper County. Joplin has a Walmart, a Home Depot and a Target. But there’s also the quaint downtown strip of antique stores and soda fountains, vestiges of a time when the little city sat as a jewel on the long, winding belt of historic Route 66. The people of Joplin are country music people, ball cap people. The hardworking folks that keep cities like Joplin on the map for nearly 150 years. To Tara and Jeff Prosser, Joplin is home. Tara lets the screen door slam shut as she is greeted by the dogs, Daisey and Lily, two great, grey leaping balls of energy, all glossy coats and blue eyes. Tara has two children, but these dogs are her babies. She lets them bounce around her and smack slobbering kisses across her cheeks. “Four on the floor,” she tells them, though she’s smiling. “Four on the floor.” Daisey is a new dog, fairly young and still very green, but Lily, Lily is her champ. Five years earlier, the Prosser family visited a pet shop on a quest to buy a

CHAPTER 1: Meet Lily and Tara lizard for daughter Ava. There, Tara locked eyes with a Weimaraner puppy. The pup had soft, grey fur and melt-your-heart blue eyes. Floppy ears gave her a comical appearance, and she looked like she would never grow into those paws. Tara fell in love. She knew, though, that a family dog was not a decision to take lightly. As much as she had fallen for the little, grey pup’s baby blues, she knew it was best to take an evening with the family to consider if this was the right thing to do. After all, lizards are much less work and trouble than a wound up ball of fur. The morning light brought assurance to Tara’s gut feeling. She wanted that dog. She called the pet store and was shocked to learn that the Weimaraner pup was gone! The store chain was opening a new shop in Springfield and had sent the little dog there for the grand opening. Tara’s heart plummeted. She had seen something in those eyes. Some kind of intelligence. A connection. She just had to find that dog. She begged the pet store to ship the puppy back to Joplin. Thankfully, it obliged. “Lily,” Tara called her. There was never any other name. First, Lily’s paws grew. Then her legs became long, her nose grew large, her snout expanded. And always those big, floppy ears. “She’s going to get big,” Tara told Jeff.

“We’re going to have to do something with her!” And so, the pair signed up for obedience classes. Tara immediately saw Lily’s incredible intelligence. Lily mastered “sit,” “stay,” all of the basics, but Tara thought that maybe, just maybe, this dog could be something more. Author Carolyn Mueller has written two children’s books, “Bubbles the Dwarf Zebu: A Story about Finding a Home at the Saint Louis Zoo” and “Lily the Rescue Dog: A Story of Courage and the Joplin Tornado.” She lives in St. Louis. His latest book is a study of the Dust Bowl in 1930s America. He lives above a flower market in East London. Learn more at foghornhayes.co.uk.

Dig A Little Deeper! Lily is a Weimaraner. The American Kennel Club has information on this breed of dog. Visit akc.org/ breeds/weimaraner and summarize the information you learn. Where did the breed originate? What physical markings and personality traits are specific to this breed? What type of family would best suit this dog?
