A home is the biggest venture most people make in their lifetime, but a job loss or a health setback can leave them with no way to maintain their investment. That realization led to the development of Gladstone Neighbors Helping Neighbors. GNHN Executive Director Art Hammen, who is a former Gladstone mayor, said a city staff member and a civic-minded resident identified the problem. “GNHN is an organization of all volunteers to help Gladstone property owners with maintenance and upkeep of their homes,” Hammen said. “The program is need-based, either physically or financially.” Gladstone Assistant City Manager Scott Wingerson said the city realized that because of physical and/or financial con-

So, a partnership was formed. The city helps decide what activities can help residents, and GNHN helps raise money for those activities. “The Gladstone Neighborhood Commission has responsibility for approving the grants and makes recommendations to the City Council about overall neighborhood policy,” Wingerson said. “The city does contribute in certain cases to meet neighborhood or community-

These residents could not perform home and property maintenance such as painting, tree trimming, landscape removal and gutter repair. “GNHN was born out of the idea that some people experience hardships in life that require some help,” Wingerson said. Up until about four years ago, Hammen said volunteers and groups would perform home maintenance. Today the work is a mix of contractors and volunteers, according to Wingerson. About three and a half years ago, the Gladstone Neighborhood Commission was formed. “The two morphed into an organization for fundraising,” Hammen said. “Everything we do is by donation, either money or materials.” Wingerson said part of the Gladstone Neighborhood Com-

Bowl to benefit First Downs for Down syndrome Kaden’s Quest will hold its fifth annual bowl-athon on Sunday, June 3, at the North Kansas City Pro Bowl Lanes, 505 E. 18th Ave. This event benefits the First Downs for Down Syndrome organization, a nonprofit that teams with the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line to raise money for Down syndrome organizations,

raises awareness of Down syndrome and assist in creating positive images of those with Down syndrome. Kaden Mead is a boy from Liberty who was born with Down syndrome to Trent and Stacy Mead in 2007. The Meads went to their first FDFDS event that September and decided to organize a fundraiser to benefit the organization. Since beginning the bowla-thon in 2009, they have given more than $40,000 to FDFDS. This family event begins at 2 p.m. and includes lunch, a T-shirt, two games of bowling, shoes, door prizes and awards.

The cost is $120 for a fiveperson team. Several donations have been made for the silent auction and for the door prizes that will be given away. You can go to Facebook.com/kadensquest to request the registration form or call the Meads at 415-4717.

NEIGHBORS: Word of mouth helps to collect donations Continued from Page A1 wide goals.” Hammen said that word of mouth helps raise private and corporate donations for the program. “There is never a cost to the party receiving our help,” he said. In addition, GNHN is under the auspices of the Gladstone Economic Betterment Council, which is a non-profit organization, according to Hammen. As such, donations may be tax deductible. Wingerson said the Economic Betterment Council performs services like accounting but does not have a formal voice in what GNHN does. Total grants from GNHN during 2011 were $19,631, Wingerson said. The viewpoint of the city is that when GNHN helps an individual, then the whole neighborhood is stronger, safer and property values are preserved, Wingerson said. Hammen agreed. “What we do helps our community as a whole,” he said. Hammen, who is a builder, said he has a lot of contacts through his businesses and realized he could take advantage of that fact for the greater good. “This is an opportunity to continue to help folks,” he said. For applications and more information on GNHN, residents can contact City Hall or visit http://www. gladstone.mo.us/CommunityDev/Neighborhoods/ grants.php.

BUSINESS Creative Arts Academy – a Northland tradition Creative Arts Academy has been a small business in the Northland for over 30 years. Once located in the old Antioch Center, the Academy relocated in 2004 to their amazing kids campus on Englewood Road. They now occupy four buildings and sit on seven beautiful acres in the heart of Gladstone. Creative Arts Academy, CAA, is unlike any other kids facility in the Kansas City area. CAA started as a dance and tumbling studio along with one of the Northland’s first educational preschools in the early 1970’s. They built the first gymnastic center North of the river in the mid-1980’s and grew again in the year 2000 with the addition of a unique “Tumble Jungle” preschool gymnastics center. Their new facility, located at 1904 NE Englewood Road, boasts over 20,000 square feet of opportunities for children, including a Kindergarten Prep and Preschool, a state-of-the-art gymnastics center, four dance studios, a stage and much more. “Our success has always been about our staff, not our facility,” says Pam Raisher, owner and founder of CAA, “but now that we’re in our dream facility, it couldn’t be more perfect!” Creative Arts Academy Kindergarten Prep and Preschool offers an extraordinary educational opportunity for pre-kindergarten children. Their daily lesson plans incorporate computers, Spanish, sign language, music, movement, tumbling, large motor skill development and a nationally recognized kindergarten reading readiness program “Pathways to Reading”. They are the only educational pre-kindergarten to offer this program. The Academy takes pride in the individualized care provided by their teaching

staff. Children learn in a structured, nurturing environment that encourages independence and creativity. Students experience daily success and accomplishments, ensuring a love for school and learning. CAA is the only children’s facility in the Northland with two gymnastics centers. Their preschool gym is called the Tumble Jungle. The Tumble Jungle is lcoated in their preschool building and was designed and built specifically for preschool children. It houses rock walls, trampolines, a rope climb, fireman’s pole, a foam pit and so much more. Their new, 6,000 square foot “Big Fun Gym”, is truly one-of-a-kind. It includes an enormous obstacle course-like structure full of climbing, crawling and jumping adventures. “Iti is the “Tumble Jungle” on a grander scale,” explains Raisher. “We designed it to incorporate fitness, fun and gymnastics.” This structure is incorporated in recreational gymnastics classes and is also a big attraction for their birthday parties and special events offered at the Academy. Although recreational gymnastics classes are a top priority, CAA also has a competitive gymnastics team that now has more room to grow. “Ceiling height was a real limitation at our old facility,” explains Karen Burec, competitive coach at CAA. “Now we have 32 foot ceilings, a huge foam pit, a 35 foot tumble trac and new equipment. Our team is growing by leaps and bounds!” Urban Ninja/Par Core classes are a new addition to CAA. This new program combines tumbling, gymnastics, martial arts and safety to create a unique learning experience for both girls and boys.

The dance division at Creative Arts Academy is one of Kansas City’s finest. Under the direction of Pam Raisher and Niesha Tardie the Academy dancers have won hundreds of awards at local, regional and national competitions. The Academy has four dance studios and a staff of professional instructors that make the art of dance both fun and exciting. Dancers start at the age of three and many dance through high school. CAA’s nationally recognized Dance Team consists of over 50 dancers ranging in age from 6 to 18. After winning numerous awards at a regional competition their team will be performing in Branson, Missouri this summer at the Spotlight National Dance competition. Summer fun at Creative Arts Academy includes dance, gymnastics and tumble jungle classes as well as their amazing Summer Day Camps for children ages 3 through teens. These camps are offered Monday through Friday in June and July. The day caps include gymnastics, tumbling, par core, hip hop, arts and crafts, outdoor sports, swimming and tons of fun! Children may attend one week of camp or an entire month. Each week has a different theme. Activities are theme related so each week offers new and exciting adventures. Fantastic Gymnastics Birthday Parties and Ballerina Birthdays are another way to enjoy the facilities at CAA. Let them plan your next birthday party. CAA will provide the tables, chairs, table cloths and all the clean up. All you have to do is book your next event at CAA and let them do all the work. Give them a call at (816) 452-3200 for more information about birthday parties and all of their children’s programs.

Gracemor to open time capsule Gracemor Elementary School students will reveal a treasure trove of memorabilia Friday, May 18, on the school playground at 5125 N. Sycamore Ave. in Kansas City North. The event begins at 2:45 p.m. The trunk has served as a time capsule, holding items that students 10 years ago thought were reflective of their school and student life in 2002. The trunk will be repacked and opened again in 2022.

The opening of the time capsule is part of several events planned as the school year winds to a close. The annual Gracemor Elementary School Parade follows the next day on Saturday, May 19, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Students will walk from the school to the community pool, where the Gracemor-Randolph Community Council has planned activities for their families. Area streets will be blocked off for the event. — North Kansas City Schools

Shon Pernice sentenced to 15 years in wife’s death Shon Pernice, 39, was sentenced to 15 years for causing the death of his wife, Renée Pretz Pernice, on Jan. 1, 2009. Clay County Circuit Court Judge Shane T. Alexander assessed and imposed the sentence on May 11, according to a press release. Pernice was sentenced to

15 years for voluntary manslaughter and six months in county jail for each of two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively. Pernice pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Feb. 22. In his plea, Pernice

said he forcefully struck his 35-year-old wife and she fell down stairs and died. “He ignored her; he let her die, despite his skills as a medic,” Prosecuting Attorney Daniel White said. White said during the pendency of the case, the only positive he ever heard

about defendant Pernice was that he was a highly skilled paramedic, recognized locally and during his deployment to Iraq. “The mother of his children wasn’t given the benefit of a 911 call or a rushed car ride to the hospital. Instead, his wife, the mother of his children,

was wrapped in plastic and thrown in a Dumpster,” White said. The body of Renée Pernice has not been found. White acknowledged defendant Pernice for stepping up and telling what happened. But the prosecutor had strong words for the way the defendant treated

his dead wife’s body. Investigators determined that Renée’s body was within a two- to 10-acre area of a landfill packed up to 50 feet deep with trash and debris. Because of the size of the area, any effort to retrieve the victim’s remains would have been futile, authorities said.
