ͷ΃ͺ͵ͲΊ͑ͷ΀΀΅ͳͲͽͽ͑ͷͶ·Ͷ΃͑ Howdy Brazos Valley Football Fans, 2012 marks our 21st season to partner with Taco Bell covering local high school football in the Brazos Valley. For years it was only television coverage, then expanded to KBTX.com when the internet came along, and in 2010 Cody Coil launched the expanded KBTX Media Friday Football Fever magazine. In the following pages, fans get a preseason preview of area high school teams with a complete schedule of every game within a 70 mile radius of “KBTX Media World Headquarters”. And, of course, you can’t talk football in the Brazos Valley without the Aggies, Bearkats, Buccaneers, Panthers, Cowboys and Texans.

“Lots of Change” is the best way to describe the 2012 High School football season. Most notable, the new schools that will play varsity football for the first time in the Brazos Valley this fall: College Station High School, Anderson-Shiro, and Harmony Science.

Throw in the UIL’s biennial realignment that has Bryan and A&M Consolidated High Schools leaving Central Texas’ 12-5A for North Houston’s 14-5A. Then, add 9 coaching changes at the 35 schools we cover: Brazos Christian (Brandon Green), Bryan High (Ross Rogers), Burton (Jason Hodde), Caldwell (Kenneth Gilchrist), Crockett (Joe Kettler), Hearne (Clinton Smith), Normangee (Kevin Morton), Snook (Scott Cummings), and Somerville (Scott Pederson), and 2012 is going to be full of adjustments!

A big thank you to the coaches for filling out our questionnaires in detail, giving Cody plenty of material for the 35 previews he wrote.

As for our roster at KBTX, we’re beefing up our coverage as well. Cody Coil will once again bring his Texas Associated Press award winning skills to the Sports Center in the new Kent Moore Cabinets Digital Studios co-anchoring the big show with me. John Wilson will again provide sideline coverage during FFF. Our new addition is Shane McAuliffe. Our skillful feature reporter in news, is moving to the sidelines on Friday nights this fall to give us a fourth seasoned reporter that will help us make Taco Bell’s Friday Football Fever even better in 2012.

The Mustangs put together an up and down season that ended with a trip to the playoffs. BVCHEA won their first two games in impressive fashion, dropped the next two, won three of four, and then dropped their final three. Waco Children’s Home proved to be the thorn in the Mustangs side, beating them in Waco in the regular season finale and then by just two in the playoffs. BVCHEA did show a three win improvement and growth in the second year under head coach Marvin Clement. Clement said, “The best part of the year was watching the prior year freshmen step up and improve their play and being associated with a terrific team of coaches and players. The biggest challenges were teaching the players to be consistent every play, a lack of experience at the quarterback position, working to develop individual leadership in young players, and losing by two points in the first playoff round.”

COACH CLEMENT SAYS: “We will be able to count on consistent play, hard hitting and a never quit attitude… We need to improve on gap containment, downfield blocking, and containment pressure on defense… Fans will see no one superstar player but rather a team of overall good athletes that like to hit hard and play hard… We expect 8 wins and 2 losses and to advance to the semifinals in the playoffs and hopefully to the finals.”

2012 OUTLOOK

A one game stay in the playoffs a year ago should have the Mustangs hungry and looking for more in 2012. Six starters return on offense and five are back on defense. The team will have to fill a void left by all-state running back Tommy Clement, but has plenty of talent to get the job done. Freshman Morgun Brown and junior Josh Bennett, returning from injury, will battle it out for snaps at quarterback. Skylar Harris and Ben Schaums will fill Clement’s shoes at halfback, but only Daniel Chavarria returns on what will be a young offense line. Defensively two starters return on the line, two at linebacker, and one in the secondary. Ben Winkler, whose grandfather Lawrence was a Junction Boy at Texas A&M, should be a force both at linebacker and at tight end on offense. The Mustangs play in a tough district, facing the likes of defending state champion Waco Live Oak Classical, Waco Methodist Children’s Home, and Allen Academy, but if they put it all together the BVCHEA should be back in the playoffs in 2012.

The Tigers extended their playoff streak to seven seasons in their first year under David Raffield, but fell to powerful DeSoto in the bi-district round. A&M Consolidated got off to a slow start, losing their first three games while adjusting from the running attack they had used for years to the spread passing attack Raffield brought from Cy-Falls. However the Tigers would find their stride, winning their next four games before losing two of three to end the season.

Fans will see a high tempo, fast offense and an attacking defense… We expect a district championship, the playoffs, and beyond… Less travel in the new district will help and we are familiar with teams in the district. All the teams are well coached and we are going to have to play to our potential week in and week out.”

2012 OUTLOOK

The Tigers enter 2012 with a year under David Raffield’s fast paced offensive system, and the head coach thinks that will help. “Another year in the system will help us be able to go faster, and the kids are working extremely hard.” Weston Garner takes over at quarterback full-time after seeing action in five games a year ago. He has only three returning offensive starters to work with: Kyle Kavanaugh on the line, Xavier Jones in the backfield, and receiver Daniel Hulse. Two starters return on defense, linebacker Kyle Chism and highly recruited Jimmie Gilbert on the line. The Tigers open the year with one of the toughest nondistrict schedules in the state with games against former 12-5A foe Copperas Cove and Austin Westlake at home and games at a pair of 4A powers moving up to 5A in Waco Midway and five-time state champion Lake Travis. The district schedule will not be a cakewalk either, as Consol will host state power Lufkin and visit The Woodlands. The Tigers may take some lumps early, but will gain experience and should be in the thick of things challenging for a trip to the playoffs for the eighth year in a row.

2011 REVIEW The Rams returned to their winning ways in 2011 under first year head coach Jason Jolly, increasing their win total by five and going two rounds deep in the playoffs. Eventual state champion Waco Live Oak Classical proved to be the thorn in Allen Academy’s side, beating the Rams in the first game of the season and what turned out to be the last game of the season. Classical won the first game by 33, but the Rams battled hard and fell by 18 in the playoffs to show just how much they had improved during the year. Jolly said, “Our chemistry was the best part of the season. We had such a great group of guys that were not just teammates, they were friends. I think that helped us have as much success as we did. The most challenging part was a lack of experience. Of the 12 guys on our roster, seven were either freshmen or new players.”

COACH JOLLY SAYS: “We will be able to count on effort. I have high expectations for my group this next season and they know that. They are mentally prepared for the work that needs to be put in and their toughness and love for the game will carry us through… We need to improve our strength. We have a fairly small team, but that didn't hold us back last season. I hope that we continue to get stronger while not losing our speed… We expect to make it to the state championship. We have the necessary talent, and we will have much more experience than we had last season. I believe in setting high standards for my team, and I also firmly believe that we are capable of reaching those goals.”

2012 OUTLOOK The Rams have some holes to fill but return enough talent to make another run in the playoffs. All-state back Mason Schieffer returns to lead an offense that returns three starters and put up 44 points per game a year ago but is looking for more. “Fans can expect to see high scores,” said Jolly. “With our new offense we feel pretty confident that we will be able to put a lot of points on the board. We will also have a deeper roster so that we can keep guys fresh and play solid defense as well.” Sophomore Jake Georgiades and freshman Cody Vega will compete for snaps at quarterback and try to replace the graduating James Brien.

Three starters also return on defense, two on the line and one in the secondary.

Allen Academy hopes to challenge Waco Live Oak Classical for the district title, and playing the Falcons at home on October 26 could help them get over the hump. The Rams have high expectations, and fans should expect to see them in the playoffs for the fifth year in a row.

2011 REVIEW Anderson-Shiro went a perfect 10-0 playing a JV schedule in their last season before becoming a varsity program. Head coach Dwayne Ross said, “The biggest challenge was keeping kids excited when they knew they could not play in the post season. They already knew when their last game would be played.”

COACH ROSS SAYS: “Our skill positions have been working together for three years, and we feel that they will be the strength of the team… Our offensive line will have to mature quickly… We should be exciting to watch for a first year varsity program… Adjusting to the speed of the game from JV level to varsity will be the biggest change.”

2012 OUTLOOK After two seasons of JV football Dwayne Ross and the Anderson-Shiro Owls finally get to take the field as a varsity program in 2012. The Owls have had a lot of success at the JV level, and they hope that can carry over as they begin play at the next level. Anderson-Shiro returns many players who saw time a year ago, and many that have been with the program since it began. John McDonald is penciled in at quarterback, and he has six returning wide receivers and four returning linemen to suit up with in the Owls spread attack. Defensively the Owls have a handful of players coming back on the line, at linebacker, and in the secondary. The transition to varsity football will not be an easy one, but the Owls are confident they can compete at the next level. “We feel that we will be competitive and not just an easy win from what people expect from first year programs,” said Coach Ross. UIL Realignment will make the Owls road warriors in their first season, with district games at Hemphill, Deweyville, and Groveton.

Ross said, “We will have to travel a lot and know that there will not be any easy games.” The Owls will play their three home games this season at Iola.

The Eagles lost in the state semifinals but can legitimately claim to be the second best TAPPS 11-man Division IV team in the state. Hallettsville Sacred Heart beat the Eagles twice, once in the regular season and again in overtime in the state semifinals, then went on to beat Shiner St. Paul (a team the Eagles handled 4219) for the state title. Prior to the regular season ending loss to Sacred Heart, the Eagles had rolled through the year a perfect 9-0, and their only challenge came from Cypress Christian in the season opener. Brazos Christian had eight players earn TAPPS Division IV all-state honors, including seniors Brad Brown and Jaxton McNair who were all-state selections on both offense and defense. New head coach Brandon Green said, “The best part of the season was going to the state semifinals. The most challenging part was learning to stay focused and still strive for excellence when successful.”

2012 OUTLOOK

The Eagles have some holes to fill lost to graduation but expect to be in the thick of things for a district title and a deep run in the playoffs again in 2012. Brazos Christian elevated assistant and five year NFL veteran Brandon Green to the head coaching position this spring. Boyd Brigman shifts to the offensive coordinator role after accumulating a 65-43 record as head coach of the Eagles. The offensive line will be the strength of the Eagles as they start the new season, returning three starters, including Kolby Kahlden and Ryan Baron who earned all-state honors a year ago. Gentry Gale returns as quarterback but loses some of his big-time weapons with the graduation of Brown and McNair. Justin Duewall is the only other returning skill position player. On defense four starters return, and the secondary will have the most experience with Eric Lucas and Kenny Honnas back at corner and Will McCurdy returning at safety. TAPPS will have a new look in 2012, dropping a classification and going with just three divisions. The Eagles will be joined in District 5 by crosstown rival St. Joseph in Division III, along with Sacred Heart, Shiner St. Paul, New Braunfels John Paul II, and San Antonio St. Gerard. Brazos Christian should challenge perennial power Sacred Heart and Shiner St. Paul for the district title and reach the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

In their first year under Jeff Kasowski the Tigers turned it on at exactly the right part of the season and returned to the playoffs. Bremond got off to a tough 0-5 start but won three of their five district games to reach the postseason. Once there the Tigers knocked off Meridian before falling to eventual state champion Tenaha in the Area round. “Overcoming the loss of 13 seniors was tough,” said Kasowski.

“The best part of the season was winning a bi-district championship.” After the slow start the Tiger offense got on track in district and postseason play, putting up over 30 points in four of their final seven contests.

2012 OUTLOOK

Young players got two extra weeks of practice when the Tigers made the playoffs a year ago, and that will only help the 2012 team make big strides this season. Five two-way starters are back on both sides of the ball. Cade Grych saw some time at quarterback and wide receiver last season and will move under center full-time to lead the Tiger offense. He will have three experienced receivers to work with in Harrison Hull, Tyler Wilson, and Colby Wilganowski and returning running back Denovious Scaggs. However the Tigers have little experience back on offensive line and will need some young players to step up. On defense Bremond has two starters back on the line, two in the secondary, and one at linebacker. The Tigers had their ups and downs on defense a year ago, giving up nearly 31 points per game.

They will need to improve there to contend for a district title in what shapes up to be a tough 12-1A Division II. All three Tiger district opponents made the playoffs and won at least one postseason game a year ago, and Lovelady and Normangee move to 1A Division II after playing in Division I the last two seasons. Playing two of their three district games on the road makes Bremond’s road to the playoffs difficult, but the tradition-rich Tigers should be in the hunt to reach the playoffs for the 26th time at seasons end.

The Cubs put together their second consecutive unbeaten regular season and another trip to the playoffs, but came up a bit short of preseason expectations with an upset loss to Ozen in the second round of the playoffs. Brenham, ranked in the top three of the AP poll all season long, could not get the offense going in a 14-10 loss to a Panther team that entered the playoffs with a 5-5 record. Led by Texas signees Tim Cole and Malcom Brown the Cub defense proved to be one of the best in the state, keeping opponents under double-figures in seven games.

The offense averaged nearly 40 points per game.

2012 OUTLOOK Expectations will be as high as ever for the 2012 Cubs, but they have a lot of holes to fill to pull off what could be their third consecutive unbeaten regular season. Ten all-district performers graduated on defense and six players who earned all-district honors will need to be replaced on offense. Brenham solidly has three positions filled on each side of the ball with returning all-district performers Kwadareus Chapel, Austin Schlottmann, and Tyler Watts on offense and Justin Davis, Darrion Johnson, and Desmond Lockett on defense. Senior Robert Stark saw action under center in three games a year ago and looks to be the favorite to replace Dean Havemann at quarterback. Sophomore Earnest Patterson may get the call at running back to try and replace talented seniors lost to graduation in Klartel Claridy, Jerrid Jeter-Gilmon, and Troy Green. After owning 17-4A the Cubs move to 18-4A this season and add district games with Rudder, Huntsville, Willis, and Caney Creek to the remaining core of Montgomery, Magnolia, Magnolia West, and Waller. The October 12 game at Montgomery is one to circle on the calendar as far determining a district champion goes, but win or lose expect the Cubs to be playoff bound once again in 2012.

After a promising 4-1 start to the season injuries caught up with the Vikings and they could not recover. Bryan lost the final five games of the season and missed out on the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The losing record marked the end of Bob Bellard’s six-year run as head coach of the Vikings. He put together a 32-31 record and took the Vikings to the bi-district round of the playoffs four times. The former Bryan quarterback said after resigning, “I will have some huge, great memories of a bunch of kids that I got to coach, teach and follow through life. I have a tremendous amount of appreciation for the guys that I coached with, and the time and effort and work they put in."

Bryan turns to Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor member Ross Rogers to help turn the program around after six seasons under Bob Bellard.

Rogers returns to the sidelines after retiring from Harker Heights after the 2006 season. He will now try to take the Vikings to the heights he did across town in College Station for A&M Consolidated when he led the Tigers to the 1991 4A state title. The cupboard is far from bare, but the Vikings will have a lot of holes to fill after losing a big senior class. Chris Johnson returns from injury and returns as the starting quarterback. The senior, who has verbally committed to Baylor, threw for nearly 500 yards and seven touchdowns and ran for 436 yards and six more scores before an injury kept him out of the Vikings final three games. Running back Bobby Johnson, who broke off some big runs as a sophomore, is the only other returning starter on offense. Zac Slaydon and V.J. Banks are the only two listed returning starters on defense. The Vikings non-district schedule includes a 4A squad and two teams, Midway and Pflugerville Hendrickson, who are moving up to 5A this season. The schedule gives Bryan a chance to build some momentum before beginning 14-5A play at Oak Ridge on September 28. The Vikings and A&M Consolidated move south district wise in 2012, trading games with Waco area schools for schools in the Conroe area. “I like the change of geographic proximity,” said Rogers. The first-year Bryan coach has work cut out for him, but if things go well, as they historically tend to do for Rogers-led teams, the Vikings could contend for a playoff spot in 2012.

Buffalo got off to a great start, blowing out Bremond, Red Oak, Life and Cayuga before suffering their first loss of the season, a close one at eventual 2A Division II state semifinalist Corsicana Mildred. The Bison bounced back to beat Grapeland and rival Centerville (a victory head coach Mark Read said was the best part of the season), but lost three of their final four games and ended up on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.

The Bison have the talent to return to the postseason after a one-year hiatus, and they plan on putting in the work to get there. “We expect this group to get us back in the playoffs,” said Read. The Bison offense returns nine starters, none more impressive that second team all-state running back Jose Dominguez, who ran wild through opposing defenses in 2011. He ran for over 300 yards in game twice last season, going for 325 against Bremond and 321 against Grapeland.

Dominguez will be the beneficiary of having four returning starters on the offensive line to block for him, and all four earned an all-district honor in 2011. Tate Hartley and Logan Jones will battle it out for snaps at quarterback. Six starters are back on defense, four in what should be a strong secondary, Dominguez at linebacker, and Ivan Rivas on the line. The Bison move to a tough eight-team district that will make reaching the postseason a challenge. Buffalo will have to play what looks like their toughest district games on the road at Crawford, Centerville, and Riesel, but if they take care of business at home the Bison will be in the mix to get into the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five years.

The Panthers followed up their best season in school history with an even better one in 2011. Burton battled injuries, lost a pair of district games, but got into the playoffs with a win over Holland in the final week of the regular season. Some key starters returned at the right time and the Panthers played some of their best football in the postseason, going on a little bit of a revenge tour. Burton knocked off Granger, who beat them in the regular season, then Falls City, who knocked them out of the playoffs in 2011, in back to back weeks. The season ended at the hands of eventual state champion Tenaha in the state semifinals.

“Dealing with all the injuries was the most challenging part of the season,” said head coach Clinton Smith. “We had to move players to different positions each week.”

The Panthers lost some key players that helped them make a run to the semifinals, but are loaded with plenty of talent that could help them make another deep postseason run. Clinton Smith, who went 39-10 in four years at Burton, moved on to Hearne and top assistant Jason Hodde was promoted to head coach and athletic director for his hometown team. Hodde has seven returning starters to work with on offense and eight returning starters on defense. Sam Gibson, Deitrick Garcia, and Ryan Salinas are back to anchor a talented offensive line and they will be blocking for talented running back Juwon Mathis. The Panthers are searching for a quarterback to replace Xavier Bethany, and whoever wins the job has two very good, very tall receivers to throw the ball to in Brandon Green and Louis Brown. The same group also starts on defense, and will be joined by linebacker Ryan Rollins to form what should be a defense that will be very hard to score on. The chase for the District 13-1A Division II title looks to be a threeteam race between Burton, Milano, and Granger, but on paper Burton should be the favorite to claim the championship and make their third straight trip to the playoffs.

2012 OUTLOOK

Caldwell will be under the direction of a new head coach for the second straight season, as Kenneth Gilchrist replaces the outgoing Chance Locklear. Unlike the change in 2011 when Locklear used many schemes similar to those employed by previous coach Dale Williams, Gilchrist will change things up, mainly on offense where the Hornets move from the old-school Slot-T to a spread attack. Gilchrist comes to Caldwell from Whitney, where he led the Wildcats to a 5-5 record in 2011 and an 11-19 mark in his three-year tenure. Whitney improved from a zero win season before Gilchrist’s arrival to just missing out on the playoffs in his final year at the helm. He will have his work cut out for him in Caldwell too, as the Hornets are looking to get back to their winning ways after a tough 2011 campaign. Seven starters return on defense, led by linebacker Antwan Heath. Nine starters are back on offense, including four on an offensive line that could be the cornerstone to the Hornets new spread offense. Brett Gilchrist saw some time as a freshman at Whitney, and looks to be the Hornets quarterback this year as a sophomore. Caldwell changes from district 23 to district 18 this season, but the competition is very familiar. The Hornets will battle Madisonville, Navasota, Rockdale, and Taylor in a five team district that looks a lot like the one Caldwell played in during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. The Hornets will have some chances early in the season to get some wins against 2A teams Hearne and Franklin, and if Caldwell can pick up a few victories and build their confidence they could challenge for a playoff spot come November.

A very young group of Trojans started slowly, but ended up making yet another deep run through the playoffs. Calvert opened the year with losses to perennial state power Strawn and eventual playoff team Aquilla, won their next two, then lost two more before turning it on and dominating Star, Oglesby, and Buckholts by a combined 149-6 to win the district title. The Trojans then won two playoff games before bowing out to eventual state champion Richland Springs, who also knocked them out of the postseason in 2011. Calvert showed plenty of improvement from early in the season to the postseason while playing a very difficult schedule.

2012 OUTLOOK Young players gained plenty of experience and should have the Trojans back in the mix as one of the best 6-man teams in the state in 2012. The team’s confidence should be high, as many of the football players were part of the Trojans state championship winning basketball team last season. Proving they can win it all could be a driving force for the football team to repeat the feat. Tyrone Huffman is back to lead what should be a potent Trojan offense, and he will have allstate wide receiver Zaccheus Williams and running back Ja’Mikel Brown as weapons. Calvert will need to develop some strength on the offensive and defensive lines to be as successful. Three all-district players return on defense as well, led by nose tackle Jayquail Brown. Taron Gipson and Corey Chopp will tough for opposing teams to throw on at cornerback. The Trojans will play another tough non -district schedule, facing five teams who made the playoffs in 2011. The Trojans new district is spread out to say the least, but Karnack and Trinidad visit Calvert.

The district title should come down to the season finale at Milford, the only other team in the district who made the playoffs a year ago.

Coming off a state championship game appearance a younger, less experienced Yoemen squad got off to a rough start, losing their first four games of the season against a tough non-district schedule made up of all 3A teams. However Cameron turned it around when they needed to, winning their final six, all district games, to win the 12-2A Division II title and return to the playoffs. The postseason run was short, however, as the Yoemen came up a touchdown short against eventual state semifinalist Tatum.

2012 OUTLOOK The young team that lost early in the playoffs a year ago should transform into one of the best 2A teams in the state and be a threat to make a deep postseason run in 2012. With eight starters back on both sides of the ball the Yoemen look to start and finish strong this season. Quarterback Jason Kopriva leads an offense full of weapons at the skill positions and has plenty of talent returning on the line. Senior Keaton Denio should be even better after a solid junior year, and he could put up big rushing numbers behind an experienced line led by seniors Josh Smitherman, Edgar Luna, and Tyler Vrazel. Luna is a force on defense as well and returns after an all-state season. Somari Wright led the team in tackles a year ago as a sophomore and will be expected to be even better in 2012. Wright, Denio, and Michael Gelner make up a more than solid trio at linebacker, and Jalen White and Dylan Riola give the team plenty of experience in the secondary.

The non-district schedule is tough again, as Cameron faces two 3A teams and 2A Division II semifinalist Lexington. Five of the Yoemen’s district opponents are the same (Academy, McGregor, Troy, Marlin, and Florence) and the addition of Lago Vista (10-2 in 2011) and Salado (5-5 in 2011) should only make the competition stronger. Cameron Yoe has the talent to run through the district again, and should be playing football well into November and, if things go well, into December.

The Tigers bounced back from consecutive two-win seasons, won the district championship, and returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. After putting up a 4-1 non-district record the Tigers lost their district opener to Buffalo.

However they put the loss behind them and won their final four district games to clinch the 11-2A Division II title and return to the playoffs. “Overcoming injures was the biggest challenge we faced,” said head coach Kyle Hardee. “Defeating Italy 14-12 in week 10 to clinch the district championship was the best part of the season.” The postseason run was cut short with a loss to Corrigan-Camden, but the Tigers gained key experience that will help the team continue its success is seasons to come.

A senior-laden Tiger squad will have a good shot at a second consecutive district title and back-to-back trips to the playoffs. Eight starters return on offense and six more are back on defense. The Tiger offensive backfield is all back, led by senior quarterback Garrett Chase, senior tailback Ryan Payne, and senior fullback Jamal High who was co-mvp of the district a year ago. Three of five offensive linemen and tight end Dalton Holden will provide the blocking for the potent Centerville run game, and all-district receiver Colt Harris gives Chase a good target when the Tigers go to the air. Linebacker Tyler Brown leads the Tiger defense, which also returns three starters on the line and two more in the secondary. Centerville also returns experience in the special teams department in kicker Adrian Gaucin and punter Ryan Payne, who also returned two punts and one kickoff for touchdowns in 2011. The Tigers move from a six-team district to an eight-team district this season, with plenty of different names on the schedule. In fact rival Buffalo is the only other team the Tigers had in their district a year ago. Centerville and Crawford are the only two teams that made the playoffs as 2A teams a year ago, Moody and Riesel join the district off playoff runs in 1A in 2011. Playing four of seven district games at home and the solid group of returning starters should make the Tigers at or near the top of the list of favorites to win 11-2A Division II.

The College Station Cougars play their initial season of football in 2012, led by former A&M Consolidated assistant Steve Huff. Huff returns to College Station after a six year stint at Midwest City, Oklahoma. During his tenure with the Bombers, Huff led Midwest City to a 60-12 record, including a 54-7 record over the last five seasons.

College Station High School opens this year with freshmen and sophomores, and for the first two seasons the football team will not play as part of a UIL district.

Instead the Cougars will play an “outlaw” schedule that includes the Schulenburg, Waco Reicher, Austin St. Michaels, and Gonzales and the Alvin, Caldwell, Taylor, and The Woodlands sub-varsity squads. “We ended up with a tough schedule,” said Huff. “The Aldine school is like we are, all freshmen and sophomores. It should be interesting. The Alvin sophomores are like us as well. We will play some challenging schools and have some tough games.”

College Station will also field JV and Freshmen teams, but Huff won’t really know what he has until two-a-days begin this fall. “We had limited time with the kids in the spring, with only about 45 to 50 minutes a day it’s hard to tell what we have but it is obvious the kids work extremely hard and they’re talented. It’s hard to tell where they’ll end up and where they’ll develop. The bottom line is we’re going into it basically blind. We haven’t seen them in pads, just running around. So far we like what we see. They’ve worked hard in the weight room and in camps, but everything is still such an unknown.”

Despite the challenging schedule, Huff and the team plan on winning every game.

“I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t base our idea of success on winning and losing.

That’s important to the make up of athletics. We can say it’s not our main focus, but for the kids it is and we wouldn’t want it any other way. “ The Cougars will run a spread offense that Huff has used at the various stops in his career, including last season at Midwest City where his Bombers averaged nearly 43 points per game. Midwest City lost in the Oklahoma 6A quarterfinals.

The defense will use a 4-2-5 scheme. Huff’s squad only gave up 18 points per game a year ago and limited five of 12 opponents to seven points or less.

2011 REVIEW

The Bulldogs won two of three games against 3A opponents to open the season, and then ran the table on the 2A competition to close the year. Crockett won their final eight games by an average of 34 points per game, cruised to a district title, and picked up two wins in the playoffs before falling to Tatum by one point in the state quarterfinals. A missed extra point kept the Bulldogs from tying the game late in the fourth quarter. Despite the loss Crockett put together a season to be remembered, as an explosive offense averaged 40 points per game for the year. The Bulldogs won at least ten games for the second season in a row, getting the program back to its winning ways after a 1-9 2009 campaign.

2012 OUTLOOK

The Bulldogs turn to long time Texas high school football assistant coach Joe Kettler to lead them back to the playoffs in 2012. Kettler served as offensive coordinator for the explosive 2011 Bulldog team, and was promoted to head coach when Paul Parsons moved on after putting together a 36-22 record in five seasons at Crockett. Kettler is the son of Junction Boy Elwood Kettler. The Bulldogs new head man has a few holes to fill on both sides of the ball, but lists five starters back on offense and defense. Dominique Wheeler scored 15 touchdowns a year ago, and the Texas Tech signee, who saw time at quarterback and receiver, will be missed. The Bulldog offense looks to be strongest on the line with the return of 320-pounders Tevin Collins and Thomas Hickman. Crockett will need a young quarterback to step up to the challenge, but whoever wins the job will have some talented targets, including Michael McKnight to work with. Linebacker Devin Chambers will lead the way on defense after racking up over 100 tackles in 2011. Kettler will not be able to make his home head coaching debut until the calendar nearly reaches October, as the Bulldogs open the season with four consecutive road games, including a tough opener at 2A power Lexington and games against 3A squads Rusk and Madisonville. On paper Crockett and Franklin look like the teams to beat in the District 11-2A Division I race, but Teague and Palestine Westwood, who drops from 3A to 2A, may have a say as well. Expect the Bulldogs to punch their ticket to the postseason for the third season in a row.

The Lions went toe to toe with some of the best 2A teams Texas had to offer in District 12-2A Division II and earned their fifth straight trip to the playoffs. Franklin began the year with four dominating wins, and put an amazing 152 points on the board in victories over Tomball Memorial and Whitney. Rogers handed the Lions their first loss in their first district game, but Franklin went 4-1 the rest of the way to reach the postseason. Italy and San Augustine proved to be no match in the playoffs, but district rival Lexington beat the Lions for the second time in 2011 23-13 in the regional round. “Playing after Thanksgiving was the best part of the season,” said head coach Mike Hedrick. “The biggest challenge was losing three key players for the season at the midway point and nobody got their head down.”

2012 OUTLOOK

The Lions have arguably the best 1-2 punch in the state in the backfield in tailback Darius Floyd and fullback Chris Morrow. The two combined for 4,099 yards rushing a year ago and had some huge games, including a 433 yard, 7 touchdown effort from Morrow against Whitney. The tandem ran through holes opened up by a very good offensive line a year ago, but, unfortunately, no starters return in 2012. The line and quarterback position are question marks heading into the season. If they develop, the Lion offense could be outstanding once again this season. The Franklin defense should be solid as seven starters return, six that earned all-district honors a year ago. Hayden Luhn leads a group of three returning linebackers, three second team all-district performers are back on the line, and Eric Hawkins will be the rock the Lions lean on in the secondary. UIL Realignment moves the Lions from 2A Division II up a level to 2A Division II and to a district set deeper in east Texas, but the competition may not be as tough. Franklin should battle Crockett for the district crown, as no other team in 11-2A Division I made the playoffs last season.

The Buffaloes got a new head coach in Chris Jones but did not miss a beat, winning seven regular season games and extending their playoff streak to seven seasons. Giddings won their first three games, dropped one to 4A Elgin, then won three more in a row before losing two of three to finish the regular season as 233A runner-ups. However, the playoff run did not last very long. Jones said, “The most challenging part of the year is now trying to get past that first round playoff loss that Giddings has encountered the last three years, which we failed to win again this past season.”

2012 OUTLOOK

Giddings returns quite a bit of veteran talent in 2012 as they look to stretch their playoff streak to eight seasons and get out of the bi-district round of the playoffs.

Joseph Glenn turned in a huge 2011 and, along with backfield mate Deon Hickey, will be counted on again to lead the Buffaloes offense. Adam Dock steps in as the new quarterback, and will have three returning starters on the line to work with in addition to Glenn and Hickey in the backfield. Giddings will have plenty of holes to fill on defense, as only two starters return: Greg Haywood and James Thomas in the secondary. Thanks to UIL Realignment, the 2012 Buffaloes will stampede southwest quite a few times this season as part of their new district.

Giddings moves out of the old 23-3A with the likes of Caldwell, Navasota, and Rockdale and moves into 26-3A with familiar foes La Grange and Smithville, but longer road trips to Gonzales and Yoakum. If the young players on defense can grow up during the non-district schedule, Giddings should join Gonzales, Smithville, and La Grange as contenders to bring home the 26-3A title.

“New coach. New Conference. Same 12th Man,” is the Aggies motto as they make the move from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference in 2012. The much anticipated move will put Texas A&M in the toughest division in college football: the SEC West. Kevin Sumlin replaces Mike Sherman as the new head coach of the Aggies, leaving Houston after four years and a 35-17 record. He and his new staff will have plenty of hard work ahead of them as the Aggies prepare to go toe-to-toe with the league that has produced the last six national champions.

OFFENSE New head coach Kevin Sumlin brings his high powered offense from Houston to Texas A&M, and he feels like he has the weapons to make something different work in the run-oriented SEC. There will be a three-way battle in camp for the starting quarterback job, and all signs point to sophomore Jameill Showers beating out freshman Johnny Manziel and sophomore Matt Joeckel. Whoever wins the starting job will have plenty of weapons to work with, including four starters back on the offensive line in tackles Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews, guard Cedric Ogbuehi, and senior center Patrick Lewis. That line should be able to open plenty of holes for senior running back Christine Michael, who ran for nearly 900 yards before a knee injury cut his season short a year ago. Ben Malena ran for 259 yards and four touchdowns last season and will provide quality depth at running back. Ryan Swope returns for his season at wide receiver, and has an excellent chance to break all-time Texas A&M records for career receiving yards and career receptions. Receiver Uzoma Nwachukwu makes it eight returning starters on offense. He had a career high 50 receptions a year ago and is fourth on the A&M all-time receptions and receiving yards lists.

DEFENSE Mark Snyder comes to Aggieland as A&M’s new defensive coordinator, and he will shift the Aggies from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme in 2012. Snyder will only have five returning starters on his defense, two on the line and three at linebacker. The Aggie linebackers should be the strength of the defense, led by seniors Sean Porter and Jonathan Stewart and junior Steven Jenkins. Damonte Moore moves from the Joker position in the 3-4 to an end in the 4-3 and should have ample opportunities to get to SEC quarterbacks. The secondary will be the biggest question mark. Senior Steven Terrell started four games last season and sophomore Howard Matthews started two, but corners Floyd Raven and Deshazor Everett will likely make their first start this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS The Aggies have a huge void to fill left by graduating Lou Groza Award winning kicker Randy Bullock, who hit 29 of 33 field goals last season.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Bertolet will try to fill Bullocks shoes, he was rated the number one kicker nationally by Rivals.com out of high school. Senior Ryan Epperson is back at punter after a solid junior season, but will have to hold off sophomore Drew Kaser to keep his job.

Dustin Harris is a big weapon in the return game. He led the nation with 18.6 yard per return average a year ago, took a punt back for a touchdown against Kansas, and led the Aggies with a 23.4 average in kickoff returns as well.

2012 OUTLOOK OFFENSE

The Bearkats have their sights set on making it back to the Football Championship Subdivision National Title game this season after losing to North Dakota State 17-6 in last season's championship game. Sam Houston has eight offensive starters back from the 2011 team, including junior All-American running back Tim Flanders who was named to the 2012 Walter Payton award watch list. The award is given to the most outstanding offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Flanders led the Southland Conference in rushing last season with 1,644 yards, which is also a school record for rushing yards in a season. He has set 18 Sam Houston football records. Flanders was named the 2011 Southland Conference Player of the Year. The Bearkats also have junior quarterback Brian Bell returning. He threw for 2,069 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Wide receivers Torrance Williams and Richard Sincere are also back for the Bearkats. The dual-threat Sincere was the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year, and, like Flanders, Sincere was also named to the 2012 Walter Payton award watch list. He ran for 979 yards and nine touchdowns while racking up 485 receiving yards and catching four touchdown passes. Williams had 450 yard receiving and 277 rushing, scoring three touchdowns rushing and three receiving. Up front the Bearkats have three starters back in tackles Riley Smith and Kaleb Hopson along with guard Matt Boyles, but they will have to replace Chris Crockett and Travis Watson who both started all 15 of Sam Houston's games last season. Doug Ruse is the Kats' new offensive coordinator, replacing Bob DeBesse who is now the offensive coordinator at New Mexico. Ruse spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Western Illinois.

DEFENSE The Bearkats have nine starters back from last year's team that finished third in the nation in total defense giving up 279.93 yards per game. The unit led the nation in rushing defense giving up 72.9 yards per game and finished second in the country in scoring defense, allowing 14.9 points per game. The Kats have four starters back up front. Defensive tackles Gary Lorance and J.T. Cleveland both started all 15 games last season. Defensive ends Andrew Weaver and Jarrett Brown each started eight games. The Bearkats will have to replace linebackers Will Henry and Kash David, who started every game in 2011 and combined for 61 career starts. Three linebackers are returning letterman including senior Darius Taylor, who recorded 83 tackles last year including nine tackles for loss. The Bearkats have plenty of returning experience in the secondary. Four of the five defensive backs started every game last season. AllAmerican safety Darnell Taylor was the 2011 Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He led the Bearkats with 128 tackles. Taylor recorded 10 tackles for loss and three sacks. Safety Dax Swanson is back for his senior season after leading the Kats with eight interceptions a year ago. Former Conroe Tiger Bookie Sneed is back after a solid sophomore season in which he had 63 tackles, three interceptions and led the team with 12 pass breakups. Cornerback Robert Shaw was right behind Sneed with 11 pass breakups. He also recorded 67 tackles including 10 tackles for loss. Safety Kenneth Jenkins was second on the team in tackles with 95.

SPECIAL TEAMS Sam Houston deep snapper Ken Jones and punter Matt Foster are both back this season. Foster averaged 40.2 yards per punt last season. Kicker Miguel Antonio will try to replace Craig Alaniz. Antonio was 5-12 on field goal attempts last season and converted 28-29 extra points. The Bearkats will need to replace returner Brandon Closner who finished his career with a school record 1,714 kickoff return yards. The Bearkats will try to keep the "Block Party" going in 2012. Last season the Kats had six blocked kicks. Preston Sanders had three blocked field goals. Torrance Williams and Michael Buse both blocked punts. Will Henry blocked an extra point.

2011—9-2, 5-1 SWJCFC The 2011 Blinn Bucs finished the season on a sour note, and the 2012 squad, in their second season under Ronny Feldman, hopes to finish strong. The Bucs spent much of the season as the top ranked team in the nation, but dropped their last two games of the year: in overtime at home to Tyler in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference semifinals and to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the Mississippi Bowl. Blinn had a dynamic offense in 2011, scoring over 30 points in all of their regular season games and putting up more than 50 five times. The Buccaneers will have plenty of returning talent on both sides of the ball to help them get back to the top of the SWJCFC, including quarterback Eric Matthews who threw for 2,388 yards, 20 touchdowns and just two interceptions and ran for 739 yards and 13 more scores. Brelyn Sorrells ran for 390 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago and will be the leading returning rusher at running back. Kyle Aubuchon (31 rec, 548 yds, 4 td) returns as the leading receiver from 2011. He also averaged over 40 yards a punt as the Buccaneer punter a year ago.

Linebacker Brandon Thornton (76 tackes, 2 sacks), a second-team all conference selection, joins safety Tevin Broussard (46 tackles, 1 int), also a second-team All-SWJCFC pick, to lead the 2012 Buc defense that will be under the direction of Mike Mutz, who is in his first year as Blinn defensive coordinator. Kicker Kurt Walker is back after being named to the NJCAA All-American Second Team. He connected on 67-68 PAT and 8-9 field goals, including a 56-yarder. Blinn will once again play a tough schedule, including a season opener at 2011 national runner-up Butler Community College. Navarro, Trinity Valley, and Tyler all joined Blinn in the top 20 of the final poll a year ago and should be the Bucs main competition as they aim to finish this season and claim a conference title.

2011—5-6, 5-4 SWAC Heishma Northern’s first season at the helm of the Panthers was a good one, but could have been better. Prairie View was just one win away from a SWAC West Division title and a trip to the conference championship game, instead home losses to Jackson State and Alabama A&M netted the Panthers a losing record. Being that close and missing out should provide motivation this season, and with 16 starters coming back the Panthers are poised to contend for a conference title. Prairie View returns nine starters on offense, led by preseason All-SWAC wide receiver Spence Nelson (53 rec, 659 yds, 5 td). The player who will get the ball to Nelson is yet to be determined, as sophomores Jerry Locklove and Deauntre Smiley are in a battle for the starting quarterback job. Tre Glover anchors the offensive line and is a second-team preseason all-conference selection. Prairie View led the SWAC in rushing a year ago, and will turn to sophomore Fred Anderson (540 yds, 5 td) and senior Le’Darryae Groover (519 yds, 3 td) to carry the load in 2012. Seven starters are back on the Panther defense, including preseason AllSWAC selections Ryan Love (42 tackles) on the line and Raheem Cardwell (66 tackles) at linebacker. Defensive lineman Jarvis Wilson (31 tackles, 11 sacks) was a second-team preseason All-SWAC pick. The biggest hole to fill on defense will be at end, where Adrian Hamilton is lost to graduation and takes his 22 sacks in 2011 to the NFL. The Panthers were picked second behind Grambling State in the SWAC West this season, and they will have a tough road to try to win the division. Prairie View only gets to play two games at home this season, and will play three neutral site games along with six road contests.

2011 REVIEW The Tigers took some lumps in their first season of football, but put down some foundations they hope to grow on in the coming years. “2011 was our inaugural season so the kids were excited and motivated,” said head coach Eric Flores.

“They were proud to be the first team and build an athletic culture at Harmony.”

Harmony Science dropped their first two games before picking up the first win in program history, a 39-12 win at River City Christian. The team struggled the rest of the season after injuries piled up. Flores said, “Injuries and a lack of depth was the biggest challenge we faced. We had to simplify our playbook and make a lot of changes on both offense and defense.”

2012 OUTLOOK With five players coming back with starting experience hopes are high for the second season of Bryan Harmony Science Academy football. Quarterback Hunter Green has some talented weapons to work with on offense, including Giovanna Ocampo, who will do a little bit of everything. The Tigers will need young players to step on the offensive line, but will have solid experience back at the skill positions. On defense experienced players are back on the line and a linebacker, but the secondary will be a question mark heading into the season.

The Tigers play in a three team district with West Columbia Charter and Fort Bend Homeschool. West Columbia Charter is coming off a 1-8 season and Fort Bend is playing their first year of football, so the Tigers look to be in excellent position to make the playoffs for the first time in only their second season.

The Eagles just couldn’t get over the hump in Ralph Lymas’ final season at Hearne, picking up a pair of wins and suffering some close, tough losses. Hearne won at New Waverly in the second week of the season, but suffered heartbreaking losses in three of their next four games. Hearne fell to Corrigan-Camden by two, got blown out by Cameron Yoe, then lost back-to-back overtime games against Troy and Marlin. Despite the tough luck, the Eagles did not quit and finished up the season with a victory over Florence.

2012 OUTLOOK

Hopes are high in Hearne as the Eagles welcome new head coach Clinton T. Smith to the fold. Smith moves from Burton, where he racked up a 39-10 record in five years and took the Panthers to the 1A Division II state semifinals in 2011. He replaces Ralph Lymas, who went 29-33 in six seasons as the Eagles head coach.

The Eagles will take to the field with six starters back on offense and six back on defense. While only two starters return on the offensive line Hearne has plenty of returning talent at the skill positions, including Jamarcus Johnson at wide receiver. Johnson, who earned first-team all-district honors on both offense and defense a year ago, teams up with Lorenzo Castilleja in the defensive secondary.

Two starters also come back on the defensive line and at linebacker. The Eagles will play in a challenging District 11-2A Division I this season. Buffalo, Centerville, and Crawford look to the be district favorites, but the Eagles are right there with the rest of the group looking to take them down. Riesel and Moody make the jump from 1A, and could be two winnable winnable home games on the schedule for the Eagles. In fact Hearne has six home games this season, and if they can adjust to Coach Smith’s spread attack they could challenge for a playoff spot in his first season.

The Bobcats dominated their opponents by a combined 373-77 on the way to a perfect regular season, and then made a run all the way to the state championship game for the first time in school history. Melissa’s 28-15 victory ended Hempstead’s season on a sour note in the 2A Division I state title game, but the Bobcats 2011 run is one that won’t be soon forgotten in Waller County. The Bobcats defense allowed just 9.2 points per game, shut out four opponents, and held ten of their 15 opponents to a touchdown or less. The offense averaged nearly 33 points per contest.

The Bobcats will have to replace a lot of players who were key to their 2011 run to the state title game, but they feel very good about the players who will do it.

Five starters return on offense and six are back on defense. The defense loses district MVP Ronnie Jones at linebacker and safety Trent Momon, who was the overall district MVP. The offense will need to replace key pieces as well, including quarterback Obie Wilder, running back Archie Taylor, and lineman Joseph Rosemond. The offensive and defensive lines look to be the strong points of the 2012 Bobcats, and there are plenty of potential big-game players at skill positions as well. Hempstead plays a very difficult non-district schedule, including games against 3A Brookshire Royal, 3A Division I state semifinalist West Columbia, 3A Houston Stafford, and 2A Division II regional qualifier East Bernard. Look for the Bobcats to learn from their tough non-district schedule, challenge Rice Consolidated, Hallettsville, and Edna for the district title, and make their fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs.

A streaky season for the Hornets ended with yet another trip to the postseason.

Huntsville lost their first four games (all to teams that ended up with winning records), won their next four, and then lost their final three. The four game winning streak proved to be enough to help Huntsville reach the playoffs for the fourth straight season. “Fighting through adversity with injuries and mishaps we had no control over and making the playoffs was the best part of the season,” said head coach Shane Martin.

With six starters back on offense and four returning on defense the Hornets hope to navigate what looks like a very strong 18-4A and get back to the playoffs.

Huntsville needs to replace quarterback Daniel Hazlewood, and having three starters back on the offensive line will help. Forrest Reedy, one of the best linemen in the Brazos Valley, will anchor that line. The battle for the new Hornet quarterback will be between juniors Malik Brown and Ryan Bristow. The winner will have a pair of talented wide receivers to throw to in Ricky Bennett and Christain Champine (who missed most the season due to injury). On defense the line and secondary return two starters each while young players will have to step up to fill the void at linebacker. Making the playoffs out of the eight-team 18-4A will be tough, especially with games at preseason district favorites Brenham and Montgomery. The Hornets have gotten better as the season has gone on the past two years, and if their young talent can mesh with the solid core of returning starters Huntsville will once again challenge for a playoff spot.

The Bulldogs fought hard but came up just short in a handful of ballgames, and that proved to be the difference in what turned out to be a 2-7 first season under head coach Scott Bishop. Iola started strong, blowing out St. Joseph and winning a close ballgame with Hull-Daisetta to get off to a 2-0 start. However it was downhill from there, as the Bulldogs could not crack the win column in their final seven games. Three defeats came by less than a touchdown. Bishop said, “The best part of last year's team was that a considerable amount of underclassmen saw playing time. I believe that this will fuel us into the next football season. A tough district was very challenging to our boys. I believe that this will actually benefit us in the upcoming season.”

A team considered young a year ago returns this time around with a bevy of returning talent and the drive to get the Bulldog football program back on track.

Six starters return on offense, eight return on defense, and nine of the 14 are seniors. The defense is led by linebacker Bobby Pointer, who is one of three linebackers returning. Three starters return in the secondary, and two are back on the line. The Bulldogs will have to replace Bryan Bradford at quarterback, but the new QB will have plenty of talent to work with. Two starters return on the line, one in the backfield, two at receiver, and big tight end Tyson Tindol. John Kay earned all-district honors at running back last season and is poised for an even better 2012. Iola shifts to a district centered mostly in east Texas, and they will have two long road trips: 130 miles to West Hardin and 134 to Hull-Daisetta. On paper West Hardin (8-3 in 2011) is the district favorite entering 2012, but the Bulldogs will be a contender. Iola beat Hull-Daisetta (4-6 in 2011) last season and Colmesneil (2-8 in 2011) is coming off a losing year. Having to play two of three district games on the road will be a challenge, but if the Iola senior class can put it together the Bulldogs should return to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

The Cougars missed out on making it three straight trips to the playoffs, but did turn the ship around at the end of the year to finish the season on a high note.

“The midseason slump was the most challenging part of the season,” said head coach Keith Sitton. “We had too many turnovers and mental mistakes which led to a four game losing streak. To our kids’ credit, they continued to work and battled out of it the last two games.” Also of note, one of those wins came over rival Buffalo and played a role in keeping the Bison out of the playoffs as well.

We were very young last year, so the experience we gained maybe can propel us to a strong start of the season.”

The Cougars make the move to 1A football with plenty of returning talent and are poised to put together a solid regular season and make a run to the playoffs after missing out in 2011. Coach Sitton said, “We hope to build on a strong finish and very good spring. The drop to 1A has generated a great deal of excitement among our kids and we feel we have the opportunity to be very successful if we stay healthy and have some younger players fill some roles for us.” One of the spots needing filled is the most important on offense: quarterback. Tyler Morris has the inside track at replacing Kirby Watson, who started the past three seasons for Leon. The new signal-caller will have four returning starters back on the line, two that earned all-district honors in Nathan Salazar and Sagar Raja. In Leon’s Wing-T scheme the tight end position is also key, and the Cougars are set there with all-district returnees Drake Jones and Brock Brown. Seven starters are back on defense, five on the line and two linebackers. Although Leon moves from 2A to 1A their district will be a tough one. Axtell (5-6 in 2011), Bosqueville (7-4 in 2011), Mart (12-3, state semifinals in 2011), and Valley Mills (9-3 in 2011) all made the playoffs a year ago.

Coming off a loss in the state championship game in 2010 the Eagles almost made it back to the final game for the second year in a row. Rosebud-Lott upset Lexington in district play, but the Eagles recovered to win quite possibly the toughest 2A district in the state. 2012 OUTLOOK

Five returning starters on offense and eight returning starters on defense will make Lexington a favorite to make another run deep in the playoffs. Quarterback Kogan Garrett is back after a phenomenal junior season and looks to make an Eagle offense that averaged nearly 35 points a game a year ago even better.

Two of his main receiving targets return in Jason Washington and Zach Lay, but only two starters are back on the offensive line. The Eagle defense was solid for the most part a year ago and could be a force, led by all-state defensive end Todd Glass. After playing a brutal non-district schedule (Crockett, Cameron Yoe, Franklin, and Navasota all made the playoffs a year ago and went a combined 37-12) UIL Realignment sends Lexington west for two years to a tough district. The Eagles join Rogers, Blanco, and Schulenburg as teams that made deep playoff runs a year ago. Lexington gets Blanco and Schulenburg at home, and that will certainly be a factor in the Eagles making their third straight trip to the postseason.

The Mustangs went from district champs in 2010 to outside the playoff picture in 2011 after a 3-7 season. Madisonville opened with a brutal non-district schedule and lost to Navasota (3A Division I Quarterfinalists), Coldspring (3A Division II Semifinalists), and Crockett (2A Division I Quarterfinalists) and picked up their first victory over Caldwell. After a close loss to Rockdale the Mustangs won their first two district games, but fell to Mexia, Palestine, and Fairfield to miss the playoffs.

2012 OUTLOOK

The Mustangs return five starters on offense and four on defense as they look to get back to their winning ways and return to the playoffs after a one year break.

Madisonville’s strength on offense will be the line, led by returning starters Ethridge Brooks, Dalton Gilbert, and Julio Camarena. The Mustangs will need skill position players such as quarterback Ryan Clever and tailback Donta Crist to step up to help replace last season’s District 20-3A Offensive Co-MVP Anthony Manns.

On defense the Mustangs return a key leader at each level: J.R. Gibson on the line, Jesse Cuevas at linebacker, and Grant Smith in the secondary. After two years of being in a district with teams along I-45 the Mustangs return to the west where they’ll rekindle district matchups with rivals such as Caldwell, Navasota, and Rockdale. District 18-3A will feature some fierce competition, but the Mustangs should be in the race for a playoff spot at seasons end, and their final game of the regular season at Taylor may very well end up deciding the final playoff spot out of 18-3A.

The Eagles put together the most successful season in years, finishing the regular season 9-1 and picking up a win in the playoffs before falling to Fall City, the same team that knocked them out of the playoffs in 2010. 2011 was Milano’s first ten win season since 1999. Milano got off to a hot start, winning their first nine games. However, Granger came out on top in a 6-0 defensive struggle to claim the district championship. Milano picked up some big wins along the way, including a one point victory over eventual state semifinalist Burton. The Eagles averaged 31 points per game and put up over 40 six times. The defense shut out three opponents and just under 12 points per game. Head coach Craig Jentsch said, “The most challenging part of the season was overcoming injuries to key players.

Going 9-0 and having a chance to win district in the last game of the regular season was the best part of the year.”

Milano looks to get deeper in the playoffs, and they have the returning talent to get the job done. Eight starters return on offense and five are coming back on defense. The Eagles have to replace a pair of first team all-district offensive linemen, John Jentsch and Tyler Ensley, but will have four young, talented starters coming back. Toby Sanders returns under center off an all-district season, and he has a tall and talented target to go to in receiver Dominique Messer and two tailbacks to help carry the load in juniors Chance Pack and Jordan Millar. District 131A Division II co-defensive player of the year Messer leads the way on the Eagle defense and is joined by Millar at linebacker. Pack and Dakota Grandchamp return on the defensive line, but Sanders is the only returning starter in the secondary. Milano joins Granger and Burton as the preseason favorites to claim the district title, and if the younger players can step up to help a talented group of upper classmen the Eagles should soar into the playoffs for the third season in a row.

The Bears made it four consecutive trips to the playoffs after an 8-2 regular season, and then went two rounds deep before bowing out to Vidor in a close ballgame. Montgomery used an explosive offense that put up 40 points or more seven times in the regular season, and a defense that shut out two teams and held two more to just a touchdown. “We overcame the loss of a couple of starters and finished the regular season strong,” said head coach John Bolfing.

The Bears have established themselves as a perennial district title contender and should be playoff bound once again in 2012. To get back to the postseason, however, the Bears will have to fill some holes on both sides of the ball. Nine alldistrict performers are gone on defense and six more graduated on offense. Offensively, three starters return, one in the backfield in Dedrick Linton, who finished second to Tevin House in rushing for the Bears last season, one on the line in Hunter Barron, and the third-leading receiver from a year ago in Bodhi Bell.

Bell took a few snaps at quarterback a year ago, but look for sophomore Josh Bolfing (13-23, 225 yds, 1 td, 1 int in ’11) to take over under center this season.

Jimmy Dominick, who coach Bolfing said “Can do it all,” will see some time at fullback, defensive back, and return punts and kicks. The offensive line will be the youngest unit on the team. Bolfing said, “Our offensive line will have to grow up in a hurry.” Two starters return on defense, and both are in the secondary and earned all-district honors a year ago. Look for Alex Markos to step up at linebacker. Bofling said Marko’s “Could be outstanding. He has really matured over the past year.” Senior Jaylin-Hemphil-Poplar, a player Bolfing said, “Performed very well as the backup nose guard last season and is very quick,” will be the new anchor of the defensive line. Reliable senior kicker Will Fox will once again be a weapon on special teams. The non-district schedule is very tough, as the Bears open against 2011 quarterfinalist Angleton then visit state semifinalist Pearland Dawson before beginning 18-4A play. The district will be tough (the Bears are one of five teams to make the postseason a year ago) but expect Montgomery to reach the playoffs yet again.

You would be hard pressed to find a team as consistent as the Navasota Rattlers, who made their fifth consecutive trip to the 3A quarterfinals in 2011. Unfortunately, like the four seasons before, the year ended with a tough loss in the Texas 3A elite eight. The Rattlers only regular season loss was to 4A Willis in week one.

Navasota followed that loss with eight straigtht regular season victories and a district title before two playoff wins and the loss in a shootout to eventual state champ Tyler Chapel Hill. Head coach Lee Fedora said, "The best part of the season was our chemistry and our fifth straight trip to the quartefinals. The toughest part was suffering injuries to the offensive and defensive lines during the playoffs."

Navasota should once again be one of the best 3A teams in the state. The Rattlers are more than set at the skill positions with Kadarius Baker returning at quarterback after an amazing junior season where he threw 40 touchdown passes and only three interceptions. His top receiver is also back in all-stater Solomon McGinty, who is a threat to go the distance with every catch. The offensive line is another story, as Bo Meece is the only returning starter. The Rattler defense should be able to make big strides with eight returning starters, including all-state linebackers Will Imhoff and Jaylyin Minor and all-state defensive end Jake Bauer. The Rattlers play a tough non-district schedule to open the season against 4A Willis and Austin McCallum, 3A Division II state semifinalist Coldspring, and 2A Division II state semifinalist Lexington. The non-district will not be a cake walk either, but the Rattlers should be the favorite to win it and have a shot at making yet another deep run in the playoffs.

Normangee got off to a tough start, losing a pair of games to 2A teams, before turning things around and winning seven of their final eight games. The Panthers rolled through 12-1A Division play, putting up nearly 47 points per game on their way to a district championship. Normangee outscored their district opponents by almost 31 points per game to earn a first round bye in the playoffs. 2012 OUTLOOK

Normangee’s highly successful eight year run under Brian Mullinnix comes to and end and Kevin Morton is the new head coach of the Panthers. Mullinnix went 5226 in his time at Normangee but is stepping due to health issues. Morton comes to Normangee after spending the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator at Corsicana Mildred, whom he helped reach the 2A Division II state semifinals last fall. Morton’s offense at Mildred averaged 57 points per game last season, and if he can help the Panthers remotely close to that level in the near future Normangee will be in good shape. This season Normangee will be young, especially on offense as only one senior starter, lineman Dylon Isom, returns. Isom is one of three starting offensive linemen coming back, but plenty of production will have to be replaced due to graduation, including first-team all-state quarterback Colin Reed, who ran and threw for a combined 3,400 yards and 38 touchdowns, and all-state selections Dominique Barton and Darius Darnell. The Panthers will have an experienced upperclassman back at each level: Justin Craigo on the line, Justin Hailey in the secondary, and linebacker Tyler Fletcher, who was a first-team all-state selection as a junior. UIL Realignment places the Panthers in what looks like a very tough District 12-1A Division II. Bremond, Chilton, and Lovelady all made it to the playoffs a year ago and won at least one postseason game. Normangee opens the year on the road at Leon before five straight nondistrict games at home. If the young Panthers can get some experience in front of the home fans, they should be in the mix to make the postseason for the sixth time in the last seven years.

Rockdale got off to a slow start in losing their first two games, won three in a row to wrap up non-district play, but dropped four of their final five contests to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The Tigers had a hard time putting points on the board at times, getting held to two touchdowns or fewer in seven of their ten games. Despite the scoring woes the Tigers did find their passing game in 2011. Head coach Jeff Miller said, “The best part of the season was our ability to throw the football. We set season passing and receiving records. The worst part was dropping to 4-6 and missing the playoffs.”

2012 OUTLOOK

Although the Tigers are coming off a losing season, things are looking up in 2012.

Rockdale returns a solid group of leaders on both sides of the ball and should be Navasota’s biggest competition to win District 18-3A. Seven starters return on offense, led by senior quarterback Ethan Brinkley, who led the Tigers the quarterfinals of the State 7-on-7 Division II championship bracket this summer. He has a pair of talented junior receivers to throw to in Austin Caffey and Clayton Gibbs and solid young tailback to hand the ball to in Dailynn Ramey. The Tiger offensive line may be the question mark as only two starters return. Tackles Josh Pelzel and Pedro Ibbars will team up with tight end Patric Trejo on the outside, but young interior linemen will have to step up this season. The Tiger defense has six starters back, led a solid trio at linebacker in juniors James David and Caffey and senior Markus Hayes. Gabriel McQuinn is the only starter back on the line, while Gibbs and Ladontice Coats return in the secondary. Noe Zelaya is back as a second-team all-district performer at kicker. Rockdale plays a tough non-district slate, and if they can build some momentum they should be in prime position to make their fifth trip to the playoffs in the past six years.

2011 REVIEW

After just missing out on the playoffs in 2010 hopes were high for the Rangers to reach the postseason for the first time in 2011. However, a young team had to deal with numerous injuries, including the loss of Rice signee and team captain David Wilganowski when he collapsed with a previously undiagnosed heart condition in the fourth quarter of the second game of the season against Leander Rouse. The game was called and ended in a 14-14 tie. Rudder struggled from that point forward, losing their final eight games to end the year 1-8-1. Despite the record head coach C.M. Pier says the best part of the season was, “The kids overcoming adversities.” He added, “Our biggest challenge was a lack of size.”

The Rangers took a step backwards in 2011, and they hope to right the ship and make their first playoff appearance in 2012. Six starters return on offense, led by two seniors and a junior on what should be a very good offensive line. Tre Guyton had some huge runs a year ago and is the main weapon on the Ranger offense. Rudder will need a new quarterback to replace Jamarcus Davenport, and senior Llewyn Boswell has the inside track at the job. On defense two starters are back at linebacker, two on the line, and one in what will be an inexperienced secondary. Linebacker Kendall Lewis earned all-district honors as junior last season and looks to step up and lead the Ranger offense this year. The Rangers also have a weapon in all-district kicker Colton Bayer. Rudder changes districts this season and it is for the best. Instead of road trips west to the greater Austin area Rudder joins the nine-team 18-4A with opponents a whole lot closer to Bryan.

That does not mean it will be easy, however. Rudder will have to battle with state power Brenham and 2011 playoff teams Huntsville, Magnolia West, Montgomery, and Willis to have a shot at reaching the postseason for the first time in school history.

After a winless 2010, the Blue Jays broke into the win column twice in 2011 and showed marked improvement across the board. Despite a lack of depth, Snook battled into the fourth quarter with a shot to win in most of their games and lost two of them by less than a touchdown. Phillip Pearce, who helped Snook reinstate the football program, stepped down at the end of the season, but did a solid job in his four years in getting the sport on track for the Blue Jays.

2012 OUTLOOK

The Blue Jays welcome Scott Cummings (who is no stranger to the Brazos Valley having served as an assistant at A&M Consolidated, Navasota, and Cameron Yoe) to the fold as the new head coach and he will bring a whole new system with him. He served as offensive coordinator at Harker Heights last season and will install a spread offense at Snook to replace the Wing-T system used by the outgoing Phillip Pearce. Robert Lewis saw plenty of time at quarterback a year ago and will be the trigger man for the new-look Snook spread. Lewis will have five returning starters on the line and district tri-newcomer of the year Jermaine Foster to work with, but will need young receivers to step up when the Blue Jays go to the air. Nine players who started on defense a year ago and gained experience return, which is good news for a unit that gave up nearly 33 points per game in 2011. Still without a home stadium the Blue Jays will play eight road games and two “home” games at Stephen F. Austin Middle School in Bryan this season.

Cummings says his Blue Jay’s district will be as tough as ever. “Burton and Milano will still be tough teams. Somerville is moving down and has a lot of experience coming back. Bartlett and Granger traditionally have been tough in football.

It will be a test each week.” If Snook adapts well to their new coach and a different way of playing, they should be well on their way to more wins than they had in 2011 and a shot a playoff berth.

The Yeguas improved by one game in what turned out to be the final season under Pete Martinez. Somerville jumped out to a 2-1 record and took a 3-3 mark into district play, but could not overcome Thrall, Moody, and Normangee to miss the playoffs for the fifth season in a row. The Yegua defense struggled at times, giving up more than 50 points in three games and 48 another. However the offense showed marked improvement over the 2010 season, averaging over eight more points per game at 29.6.

Scott Pederson is the new head man in Somerville, making the move from the offensive coordinator position at Slaton. He takes over a Yegua program that is looking to get back on track and reach the playoffs for the first time since a run to the state quarterfinals in 2006. Pederson will have quite a bit of returning talent, as eight starters are back on each side of the ball. Nathan Coronado is back at quarterback, and has three linemen, three receivers, and a returning running back to work with. On defense two starters are back on the line, three at linebacker, and three in the secondary. Somerville moves from 1A Division I to Division II, but the competition will still be very strong. Burton, Granger, and Milano all made nice playoff runs a year ago and look to be the favorites in 13-1A Division II. The Yeguas get to play three of their five district games at home, and if things come together under Pederson, Somerville could well challenge for a spot in the postseason.

The Eagles went through a tough season in 2011, winning just one game on the way to a 1-10 mark. However, St. Joseph did return to the playoffs for the fifth year in a row and got some extra practice time for what was a young team.

Through the first half of the season the Eagles were shut out twice and held to just a touchdown two more times, but picked up the scoring in the second half of the year and averaged nearly 27 points per game in their final five games. The defense had a rough go of it all season, however, giving up 46 points per game.

2012 OUTLOOK

The Eagles look to make big strides and put a few more marks in the win column this year than in seasons past. Nine players who started a year ago return on offense, including quarterback Luke McClure, who will be more experienced and confident after playing last year as a freshman. A young quarterback’s best friend is the line, and the Eagles return four starters there. McClure will also have a trio of talented junior backs to work with in Nicky Damon, Tres Todd, and Ben Rios and receiver Thomas Marvin. Eight starters return on defense, led by linebacker Matthew Krause and Todd at safety. The secondary has four starters back, and may be the strength of the defense. TAPPS will have a new look in 2012, dropping a classification and going with just three divisions. The Eagles leave a district last season that featured Division III state runner up Austin Regents for one that includes Division IV champ Hallettsville Sacred Heart, Division IV runner up Shiner St. Paul, and Division IV semifinalist, and crosstown rival, Brazos Christian. Needless to say, it will be tough, but if the Eagles can turn the lessons they learned a year ago into successes on the field this season, they will contend for a playoff spot for the sixth year in a row.
