Wagner College has developed a curriculum that unites deep learning and practical application. The Wagner Plan incorporates our long-standing commitment to the liberal arts, experiential learning and interdisciplinary education with our geographical location and enduring bond with New York City. The College’s annual operating budget is $50 million.

LOCATION: Atop Grymes Hill in New York City’s Borough of Staten Island, a neighborhood of historic turn-of-the-century estates and mansions. Once the American home of the Cunard shipping lines dynasty, Wagner’s campus provides a setting that feels far away from the city. CAMPUS: 105 acres of park-like hilltop that overlook the Atlantic Ocean, New York Harbor and Manhattan. We have 23 buildings, including Horrmann Library with over 150,000 volumes. HOUSING: Three residence halls fully equipped with fiber optic phone system including Internet, voice mail and e-mail. 80 percent of our students live on campus.

THIS IS WAGNER COLLEGE As tenacious as any Seahawk, Wagner College enjoys a bucolic perch atop Grymes Hill overlooking Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1883 as a Lutheran proseminary, Wagner has evolved to become an independent residential liberal arts college enrolling a capacity of over 2,000 students. The location of the College above the gateway to one of the world’s greatest financial and cultural capitals was the work of alumnus Frank Sutter who convinced the College’s Board of Trustees to relocate Wagner here from Rochester in 1918. In this, the Rev. Sutter and the trustees were extraordinarily prescient. Their wisdom provided Wagner with a distinct geographical advantage over all other all liberal arts colleges in the country. Wagner is New York State’s southernmost college and its 105 park-like acres represent the highest elevation on the eastern seaboard from Maine to Key West Florida. The College’s signature curriculum – the Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts – capitalizes on the best of a traditional, suburban, liberal arts college campus and the infinite array of educational opportunities afforded by New York City. Students intern in the world’s leading financial institutions. They observe and experience diversity from the sophisticated workings of the United Nations to melting pots of multicultural neighborhoods. They circulate in the city’s unparalleled creative environment of museums, media, and performing arts. This is their laboratory. They immerse themselves and are inspired by the city’s sheer energy.

The contrast between the frenetic life of the city and the almost pastoral setting of the campus is the perfect metaphor for the melding of experiential and theoretical education that is the hallmark of The Wagner Plan. In small learning communities, students and faculty explore the conceptual foundations of the arts, humanities, and sciences. The faculty challenges students to consider new ideas, to master new skills and technologies, and to reflect and draw meaning from what they have experienced in and out of the classroom.

A lush canopy of mature maples and oaks shades Wagner’s 105-acre campus of manicured lawns and gardens; historic and modern buildings; and sweeping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New York Harbor. In early 2009, former U.S. President Bill Clinton recognized Wagner College and President Richard Guarasci, at the second annual Clinton Global Initiative University. Wagner was cited for the Port Richmond Partnership, an innovative program that will focus the school’s community resources in an effort to improve quality of life in a specific Staten Island neighborhood. Movie companies have frequently used the campus as a classic college setting, most recently for a movie titled “School of Rock” starring Jack Black (Shallow Hal). The picturesque campus was also used in a fall 2001 television series, The Education of Max Bixford, starring Richard Dreyfus and as the site of a prospective private military school in the HBO series, The Sopranos.

THIS IS WAGNER COLLEGE Since the adoption of the Wagner Plan in 1997, enrollment has increased by nearly 40 percent and student quality as measured by high school average and SAT scores have improved as well. Once largely a commuter campus, now 82 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls that offer “million dollar” views. Though continuing to serve students from metropolitan New York, the college draws most of its enrollment from beyond the immediate region. By every measure – enrollment, endowment, and national reputation – Wagner is ascending the ranks of America’s strongest small colleges that blend the liberal arts with a commitment to service and preparation for the professions. Campus life includes the array of sports provided by an NCAA Division I program which is housed in a 93,000-square-foot sports center featuring an extensive fitness center, an indoor NCAA swimming pool and a basketball arena. A football and track & field stadium showcases a variety of playing fields throughout the campus including baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer venues. Wagner’s alumni include Broadway Tony award winners, movie stars, film producers, playwrights, and Fortune 500 CEO’s including the chairman of GE Investments, the chairman of Dupont Europe, the chairman Emeritus of The Oppenheimer Management Company and the chairman of the New York Power Authority. Visitors to and residents of New York City alike enjoy access to a rich and diverse array of museums, cultural organizations, arts performances, sports teams, societies and attractions. Some of the best and most famous attractions in the world call New York City home. We encourage you to find out more about them, so that you can plan a visit to what is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world. To get to Manhattan from Staten Island, you can take a ride on the world-famous Staten Island Ferry, a well-recognized icon of New York City transportation, and incidentally, a free ride into the heart of New York City.

Wagner’s unique location offers students a campus setting that feels hundreds of miles away from anywhere, while actually only a ferry ride away from the cultural riches of the world’s most dynamic city New York City

FACILITIES

Opened in 1999 and part of a $13 million campus-wide improvement, the Spiro Sports Center is a 93,000 square foot student-oriented multi-purpose athletic and recreational facility. Since its opening, it has become a major focus of student activity on campus. The facility, which tripled the existing athletics facilities, is designed to serve the recreational and intercollegiate athletic needs of the Wagner College community. Since using Richmond County Bank Ballpark as their home field in 2008, Wagner has enjoyed unparalled success. The Seahawks, who share the field with the Class A Staten Island Yankees, have posted an 84-48 record (.636), including going 48-33 (.593) in NEC games.

Train: Amtrak, Long Island Railroad and New Jersey Transit trains arrive at Penn Station in Manhattan at 34th Street and 7th Avenue. From Penn Station, take either a cab or the New York City Subway (IRT Downtown #1 or #9 train to South Ferry; IRT #4 or #5 train to Bowling Green; IRT N or R to Whitehall Station) to the Battery Park Ferry Terminal. Take the Staten Island Ferry (no fare) to Staten Island. From the ferry terminal on Staten Island, the College is a short ride via car service, which can be picked up at the terminal.

THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY The Staten Island Ferry is run by the City of New York for one pragmatic reason: To transport Staten Islanders to and from Manhattan. Wagner begins year three of the Jim Carone era with aspirations of reaching the postseason for the first time since the 2010 season thanks to the return of 22 letterwinners from last year’s squad that won 24 games, including 16 during Northeast Conference (NEC) play.

PITCHERS

Carone will have his deepest and most experienced staff since his appointment as head coach for the 2012 season. Wagner brings back all four weekend starters among its nine returners as the group accounted for all but one of the Seahawks’ 24 wins a year ago and 88.7 percent (395/445.1 IP) of the team’s workload. Returning as the Friday night starter is senior RHP Ryan Casey who had a solid season a year ago, going 5-5, including 4-3 during league play, with a 4.33 ERA and four complete games over 89.1 innings of work. Despite striking out just 35 batters, the Garden State native surrendered a miniscule 20 free passes while showing a proficiency for working deep into games. Casey completed least six innings in nine of his 13 starts, including going at least seven frames in five of his seven outings. Complementing Casey a year ago was senior LHP Matt Morris, who went 4-4 with a microscopic 1.97 ERA and four complete games over 50.1 innings while holding the opposition to a .233 average. Morris’ performance further solidified the argument that the Garden State native is one of the top power arms in the league as was evident by his impressive 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings ratio (42 K/50.1 ip). For Wagner to return to the postseason for the first time since 2010, Casey and Morris will have to continue to lead the Seahawk pitching staff. Earning the game-three starting assignment a year ago was sophomore RHP Mike Adams, who won two games with a 6.71 ERA over 57.2 innings. Adams flashed a plus arm while holding hitters to a .247 average in his first-ever foray as a starting pitcher after playing infield and relieving throughout high school. This season he is expected to help solidify the back-end of the bullpen. Last but not least among the returning weekend starters is sophomore LHP Paul Mammino, who garnered Freshman All-America honors a year ago after posting a 6-2 record with a 3.53 ERA and 41 strikeouts over 71.1 innings of work while limiting opposing hitters to a .255 average . Mammino also recorded arguably the finest performance by a Green & White athlete all season when he dialed up a one-hitter against CCSU en route to earning CBI Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Week accolades. Junior Anthony Battaglia is the most experienced arm in the bullpen, having served as the Wagner closer in each of the last two seasons. In 2014, he notched six saves with 28 strikeouts in 32.1 innings of work while posting a 4.73 ERA over a team-best 23 appearances. Classmate Steven Bloodworth also returns after a highly successful sophomore year that saw the Garden State native emerge as the Seahawks’ set-up man. Bloodworth, who throws from the unconventional sidearm slot, recorded a solid 4.88 ERA over 27.2 innings of work. Rounding out the eight Wagner returners from a year ago are junior RHP Max Schmardel, sophomore RHP Nathan Hunt and classmate RHP Ryan Spahr. Also returning after sitting out last season due to injury are senior RHP Nick Pavia and junior RHP Evon Previte. Looking to crack the rotation in 2014 are freshmen Alex Amadeo (LHP), Brad Currao (LHP), Nick DiLeo (LHP), Austin Goeke (RHP), Nolan Long (RHP), Danny Marsh (RHP) and Eric McGough (RHP).

THE INFIELD

Leading the way at the catching position is reigning All-NEC First Team selection junior Nick Dini. The two-year starter posted an impressive .364 OBP with 20 extra-base hits, highlighted by a team-leading 14 doubles and four home runs, 46 RBI and 13 stolen bases. Dini, who will also see time at third base, also threw out 29.4 percent (10-of-34) on the basepaths. Joining Dini behind the plate is classmate Jason Gordon, who posted a .278 OBP a year ago, including a .327 mark during conference play, and was one of the team’s most clutch performers. In splitting catching duties with Dini, the Maryland native threw out 22.0 percent (9-of41) on the basepaths. Also looking to garner action behind the plate Is sophomore John Lynn and freshman Brendan Benecke. When Dini is not playing third base, sophomore Ben Ruta will most likely get the start at the hot corner. Ruta led the Green & White in quality at-bats and notched a .409 OBP, including a team-best .442 mark during league play, while showcasing the versatility to play multiple positions. Last season, junior Tommy Mazurkiewicz entrenched himself as the starting first baseman thanks to his outstanding defense while also developing a knack for getting on base. In addition to his solid glove, Mazurkiewicz recorded a .353 OBP with 12 doubles and 28 RBI over 54 starts. Over at second base, classmate Dan Wasilick is penciled in as the opening-day starter after splitting time with current volunteer assistant coach Chase Gray. A year ago, the energetic Garden State native posted a solid .359 OBP and was a menace to opposing pitchers both at the plate and on bases.. Senior Shaun Flynn returns at shortstop for the second-straight season. Last season, he hit .268 with 30 runs, eight doubles, two triples and 22 RBI after transferring in from JUCO ranks. Completing the infield is sophomore Vaughn Champion along with freshmen James Farrell and Nick Mascelli.

THE OUTFIELD

In the outfield, Wagner will have the tall task of replacing First Team All-NEC selection and Seattle Mariners’ draft pick Ian Miller. Miller stole a NEC-record 46 bases while posting a .369 OBP with 46 runs and 30 RBI while starting all 55 games in center. Looking to fill the void in center is senior Chris Smith, who earned Second Team All-NEC accolades while posting a team-best .436 OBP with 32 runs, 11 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 32 RBI. The Sunshine State native also swiped 17 bases and will use his impressive speed in center after serving as a corner outfielder over the last two seasons. Joining Smith in the outfield fray is the aforementioned Ruta, who will see some time in left field when not playing third thanks to his athleticism and strong throwing arm. Looking to crack the line-up this season are juniors Trey Nicosia and Zack Yesko after each seeing limited time over their first two seasons. Nicosia notched a .333 OBP over 18 at-bats a year ago while Yesko saw action in three games. Rounding out the outfielders are freshman Evan Fardella and Pheonix Deschamps.

JIM CARONE Head Coach #14

Third Season | Monmouth, 2003 Jim Carone enters his third year as head coach at Wagner College in 2014. Carone oversees all aspects of the program, including but not limited to the pitchers and catchers, after previously serving as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for three seasons at Villanova. No stranger to Seahawk nation, Carone was the pitching coach of the 2006 Wagner team that featured two-time American League (AL) All-Star and current Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Andrew Bailey as well as former Washington National and Baltimore Oriole farmhands Joe Testa and Andrew Huebner. In his second year on Grymes Hill, Carone helped tutor Paul Mammino to one of the finest seasons by a rookie pitcher in school history. The crafty lefthander was named as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball after going 6-2 with 41 strikeouts and a 3.53 ERA over 71.1 innings of work. Mammino also fell just two outs short of hurling a no-hitter against CCSU en route to being named College Baseball Insider Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Week. Also under his guidance, Ian Miller hit .329 with a NEC-record 46 stolen bases, before being drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) FirstYear Player Draft As a first-year head coach in 2012, Carone helped Ryan Van Spronsen cap his career with a Second Team All-NEC accolade as the senior hurler went 8-1 with a 2.07 ERA and 65 strikeouts over 100.0 innings of work. Over his three seasons with the Wildcats, Carone helped revitalize the pitching staff while spearheading Villanova’s nationwide recruiting efforts. During his time in Pennsylvania, four of his pitching pupils were selected by Major League teams, highlighted by right-handed pitcher Kyle McMyne, who was selected in the fourth round by the Reds in the MLB Draft. In 2010, Carone’s pitching unit posted the school’s lowest earned run average (ERA) in over a decade while ranking 32nd nationally at 4.37, despite the fact that 10 of the squad’s 14 hurlers were either freshmen or sophomores. Additionally, two of his pitchers, Mike Francisco and Brian Streilein were selected in the MLB Draft. Over his three years with the Wildcats, he also served as the school’s Baseball Camp Director while assisting with fundraising, academics and alumni relations Prior to working at Villanova, Carone had two successful seasons with Rider, capped by a storybook season that saw the Broncs win the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship after entering the four-team playoff field as the fourth seed. During their run to the MAAC Title, his pitching staff yielded an average of less than three runs per game over the three victories in helping the Broncs to the school’s first NCAA Regional berth in 14 years. Three of his pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft, including James Hayes, who Carone helped craft into the league’s 2008 Relief Pitcher of the Year. Carone garnered his first Division I coaching job at Wagner, helping the Seahawks to a then school-record 15 Northeast Conference (NEC) victories and a spot in the conference tournament. All three members of the Seahawks weekend rotation (Bailey, Testa, Huebner) during his lone season on Grymes Hill would go to the professional ranks and were aided in their development by Carone, who helped the pitching unit record a school-record 342 strikeouts. However the top moment of the year came in the season’s final week as the Green & White won three-straight by a combined total of just four runs while holding Monmouth, the league’s top offensive team to a total of just seven runs, in earning an unlikely playoff berth. Wagner’s three-straight wins knocked the perennially successful Hawks out of the NEC Playoffs for the only time in the last 14 years. No stranger to NEC as a player, Carone prepped for Monmouth under legendary skipper Dean Ehehalt as a student-athlete, earning four letters from 2000-2003. On the mound, he collected 17 victories while posting a 3.67 ERA over 245 innings. The highlight of his career came as a junior in 2002, when the crafty righthander went 10-3 with seven complete games and a 2.21 ERA en route to garnering NEC Pitcher of the Year accolades. Carone also served as the pitching coach for the Concord Quary Dogs in the prestigious New England Collegiate Baseball League during the summer of 2006. While with the Quary Dogs, he mentored 2007 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and 2008 St. Louis Cardinals draft pick Zack Pitts. After graduating from Monmouth, Carone began his coaching career at then Division II NJIT in 2004 before moving on to Stevens Institute of Technology in 2005. Carone and his wife Stacy reside in Hightstown, NJ. What they are saying about Carone: Wagner College Athletic Director Walt Hameline “We are real excited to announce the hiring of Jim. He has outstanding credentials, having been a full-time assistant coach over the last six years, highlighted by a three years at Villanova.” Boston Red Sox Reliever, Two-Time AL All-Star and former Seahawk Andrew Bailey “He’s a baseball guy that knows the game very well and enjoys being on the field and around the guys. He already made a name for himself in his first stop at Wagner and will make a great college head coach. I’m excited that he landed back at the college. I can only see the program to continue to sail in the right direction with the addition of coach Carone.” Villanova Baseball Coach Joe Godri “Wagner is getting one of the top young coaches in college baseball. On behalf of the entire Villanova Baseball family and everyone that has worked with Jim here I can say that we are all ecstatic that Jim is being given the opportunity to begin his head coaching career. There is no question in my mind that Jim is the right person to move the program forward.” Rider Baseball Coach Barry Davis “Being named the head coach of a Division I program is the summit for most coaches when they begin their coaching careers. Jim put himself on this path immediately after his playing career, paying his dues at various levels. He is a lifelong learner and will continue to grow as the leader of the Wagner College baseball program and is a solid person who deserves this opportunity.” Rutgers Assistant Baseball Coach Joe Litterio “Jimmy has a lot of experience in the NEC Conference as a player and a coach. I wish him the best of luck and know he will do a great job.” Monnmouth Baseball Coach Dean Ehehalt “I am really happy for Jimmy. He has been successful at every stop as an assistant and now he gets an opportunity to lead his own program. I am certain he will do a great job. He is a quality person in addition to being a very good baseball person.”

CHRIS COLLAZO Assistant Coach #5

Third Season | Monmouth, 2009 Chris Collazo will enter his third season as an assistant coach at Wagner in 2014 and will again be responsible for the Seahawk hitters and infielders while also serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Collazo arrived on Grymes Hill from Seton Hall where he had served as an assistant since the fall of 2011 after previously working in the same capacity at Felician College. In the spring of 2011, Collazo helped the Golden Falcons to 24 wins while overseeing the development and maturation of two All-Conference performers in the infield. At the conclusion of last year, he was tabbed to coach in the New Jersey Division I/II/III Senior All-Star game at Kean University. While with Felician, Collazo was also responsible for coordinating all recruiting efforts, player training and the development and execution of practice plans while monitoring each player’s academic progress. Collazo also was in charge of creating scouting reports and spray charts for each opponent while constructing offensive and defensive strategic plans. In 2010, Collazo served as the assistant varsity baseball coach for Rumson Fair-Haven Regional High School, where he worked with the infield and outfield, coordinated team practice and also was the first base coach. Collazo was also the head coach of the New Jersey Niners Baseball Club in Farmingdale, NJ for several seasons, personally handling player recruitment and travel arrangements in addition to managing the team. A resident of Wall, NJ, Collazo is a 2010 graduate of Monmouth University where he helped the Hawks to a pair of NCAA Regional Berths, highlighted by earning NEC Tournament MVP honors in 2009 en route to a berth in the Mississippi Regional. A two-time All-NEC honoree at second base, Collazo left as the school’s all-time leader in hits while posting the school’s top fielding percentage mark at second base.

JOE MERCURIO Assistant Coach (#24)

Second Season | Maine, 2010 Joe Mercurio begins his second season as an assistant coach for Wagner and will be responsible for working with the Seahawks’ catchers and outfielders, while also assisting with recruiting. Mercurio comes to Grymes Hill after spending the 2011 campaign at Elon as the Phoenix’s volunteer assistant coach / director of operations. He worked primarily with the catchers, outfielders and hitters while also coaching first base for a Phoenix team that won 33 games. Additionally, Mercurio assisted with scouting reports and was in charge of the program’s summer camps. He began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010 at High Point University, assisting with the team’s catchers and outfielders. Mercurio also served as a first and third base coach and was in charge of the team’s travel and daily maintenance of the program. Prior to working with the Panthers, Mercurio spent a summer coaching the Glens Fall Golden Eagles in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, and previously was an assistant coach for the World Yacht Clippers during the summers from 2007-2010. The Brewster, NY, native was a three-year letterwinner at Maine, before graduating with a degree in communications in May of 2010. As a senior with the Black Bears, Mercurio hit a blistering .363 with 12 home runs, 19 doubles and 58 RBI en route to earning America East All-Conference and All-Tournament accolades.
