Welcome

GIVE A SATURDAY.

The true power of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra lies in our collective ability to create lasting change to ensure all residents have access to the building blocks to a better life: education, income, and health.

AND INFLUENCE

Why is United Way so critical right now? Many people don’t realize that millions of hard-working American families cannot afford or achieve the basic ingredients for a good life. One in four working families cannot earn enough to provide the basics for their families. An alarming 25% of teenagers will not graduate on time. Nearly 50 million Americans lack even basic health insurance. Those are very sobering statistics that require your United Way to be vibrant and effective.

THE CONDITION OF ALL.

We are extremely fortunate to draw upon the talent of experienced staff and volunteer leadership. And we deeply appreciate the donor generosity that makes it possible for United Way to invest in important Partner Agency programs as well as United Way initiatives to help people succeed in our region. Over the following pages, you will find a snapshot of the impact made possible by many generous contributions, a summary of financial information, and a list of our volunteer and staff leadership. We invite you to learn more about United Way by visiting www.uwnns.org to read about some of the many ways that individuals and companies get involved to advance the work of “Give. Advocate. Volunteer.” Now more than ever, your time, expertise, and giving is needed. We thank you. Sincerely,

Karen Barsell CEO and President

WHAt iS united WAY oF nortHern nevAdA And tHe SierrA? United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) is a local, independent nonprofit organization that holds itself accountable not just for action but also for results. We are driven by a commitment to make a real difference in the communities we serve and create lasting positive changes in people’s lives. We are guided by our mission statement:

“We link the community’s will and resources to improve lives.” Building on nearly 70 years of service as a community change agent, UWNNS engages the whole community to: - Identify our most pressing needs - Develop strategies that address these issues - Pull together financial and human resources - Tackle these issues with innovative funding - Produce measurable results that will make a difference and improve people’s lives We advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health. We all win when a child succeeds in school, when a family becomes financially stable, and when people have good health.

united WAY initiAtiveS 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember phone number connecting callers to free information about health and human services available in their community. Because many health and human services providers offer specialized programs and services for those in need, clients were often confused or frustrated about where to turn for help. 2-1-1 can assist with finding resources for: basic human services, physical and mental health, employment support, support for seniors and persons with disabilities, programs for children, youth and families, volunteer and donation opportunities, and support for community crisis or disaster recovery.

THINK OF WE BEFORE ME.

Parents and caregivers of young children understand that the early years are important, yet many aren’t sure how to encourage early learning, or feel they don’t have time to do what it takes to help their child succeed in school. Born Learning is an innovative program that helps parents, caregivers and communities create quality early learning opportunities for young children. Born Learning is designed as a tool for long-lasting community change that supports young children.

eArned income tAx credit

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal income tax credit available to working individuals and families. Eligibility for the EITC is based on income level, marital status, and number of dependent children. United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra participates in a statewide coalition (made up of several public and private organizations) called Project Payback – aimed at increasing awareness and access to claiming the EITC for individuals and families in northern Nevada.

For A better tomorroW. 40% of people in the United States in the last two years have either skipped filling a prescription or reduced doses because the medicine was too expensive. To address this, United Way and America’s Promise Alliance Partners, have come together to organize and coordinate community-wide distribution of free prescription drug discount cards. The goal is to reduce the cost of medicine for people in need by at least $100 million. The FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card enables you to receive discounted pricing on prescription drugs (an average of 30% or more). It can offer immediate savings on prescription drugs at participating pharmacies for people that have no health insurance, during deductible periods and for prescription medicine not covered by health insurance, Medicare and other benefit plans.
