Capstone Spa Design

CONCEPT Water is adaptable and flexible. Water changes state from ice to water to vapor. Customers in the spa will leave in a different state than they came in. They will feel less tense and more relaxed after visiting. They enter the building feeling tight and confined, and when experiencing the spa the visitors will “melt away with the relaxing treatments and procedures. Afterwards they will feel light and airy with their problems being evaporated.

4

SOLUTION

PROBLEM

This capstone project focuses on spa design. The previous semester consisted of programming and research. A detailed report of 158 pages of research was gathered, organized into the following topics:

1. Framing (problems, solutions, goals, clients) 2. Supporting (precedent studies, articles, interviews, observations, codes) 3.Localizing (site analysis, documentation, design process) 4.Conceptualizing (concept development, branding strategy) 5.Referencing Now the schematic design has begun. Focusing on concept integration, beginning ideas were pinned up and critiqued for improvement by professionals at local design firms throughout the phases of development.

A big issue seen with spas today is the lack of appeal to younger generation (ages 18-35) who look for innovation and more personalized experiences and services. Guests are increasingly looking for new ways to connect through shared experiences or group outings.

The space will be designed as innovative and create a unique experience. Guests will be a part of the creative process by choosing the ingredients used in facials and massages, and other aspects.

chill.

Storage

Chill Spa is different than others in that it designed for a younger generation. The customers that like to visit this spa are young members of society ranging from ages 21-37. They seek individuality want to feel like their opinion matters. These millennials believe in an innovative space that promotes self-improvement and relaxation. They like to engage in social atmospheres, therefore group outings to the spa are favorable ways to chat and relax. Chill Spa uses customization and personalization by letting guests choose the ingredients in a face mask and select the type of infused water at the water stations throughout the space. The multiple lounge spaces throughout the spa encourages this interaction.

This building, located in Cincinnati, Ohio currently exists as an old fire house station. The space is being designed into a restaurant. Intermission is a restaurant that acts as a theater where snack foods are served. The design concept of a space within a space was developed from the idea of how the tongue can taste individual flavors like sweet, salty, sour, etc... These are all part of one experience of savoring the food. The film strip embodies the concept with the individual frames that come together as one film. The idea of the concept is integrated throughout the interior through the seating and areas of interest.

In this north facade, branding of the peanut logo is incorporated on the roof over the bar patio on the 2nd floor. The floor levels of the bar mirror the shell of the peanut. These levels create individual spaces with the middle-raised portion being a bar, and the 2 lowered levels as seating. Outdoor seating for the main floor is directly below.

On the second floor, pods run over head the bleacher seating to face the movie screen so that the experience is created for both floors. A skylight is along the pathway of the pods to mimic the night sky that is on the ceiling directly below the skylight. The bar was designed with the same enclosing material, continuing the concept of a space within a space.

This unique vending machine is for customers who want to grab their own snack. There is a touch screen selection menu to choose. After payment, the clear tube travels to the selected snack item and is dropped down to the door where guests can grab their snack.

Praxis is an insurance company in Muncie, Indiana, that asked the Ball State students to compete and create an effective redesign of the first and second floor. Their general office area was too cramped and separated for all the employees to collaborate successfully. After 3 meetings with the client to discuss proposals, the final floor project was presented. Praxis chose this design as the winner because of the utilization of space that met all of their needs. Design solutions on the first floor include the condensed reception area, 3 private booths, 2 offices, spacious general office, 30 workstations, 5 communal workstations along the south wall, coffee bar, 2 storage closets, 1 coat closet, 2 restrooms, and an office supply closet. A lounge is near the entrance from reception for visiting guests

The second floor covers only a portion of the first floor. The employees of praxis hosted events and liked the idea of an area specific to the function of large gatherings. The design solutions include an open kitchen that has a large island and window seating. Hexagon or “beehive” tile is used on the floor along with dark gray stained wood to give the area contrast. The bar consists of a large countertop able to seat 5 people comfortably, along with plenty of storage cabinets behind. There is also lounge seating, 1 storage closet, a unisex restroom, a conference room, and training room. The training room contains individual seating for 1 on 1 activities, and the conference is for formal group meetings.

Education

The Michell Child and Family Center is a part of the YMCA in Muncie. They are desiring a new design of their multipurpose room, preschool classroom, and waiting room. The project began with a site visit and interviews with the client. An issue-based conceptual approach was used for solving current problems and issues through design. A design program was created and then approved to begin the design ideas. Next, the issues were addressed using evidence-based design. Scholarly articles were researched and determined the design of the spaces.

The design of this classroom was developed through evidence-based design research. Based on the articles and research, a bubble plan was made to show the zones in the space. Developing further, block plans define the zones exactly. The articles are referenced to why each design move was made. The main objective in the design was to create designated learning areas in the classroom. The open learning is in the center of the room from the main entrance of the north door. Off to both sides, the child has options of a personal and quiet reading space, or a nature zone where the children can bring out their creativity and connect with nature.

Hussey Mayfield Memorial Public Library (250 N 5th St, Zionsville, IN)

This is a student competition redesigning the east portion of the 1st floor of the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library in Zionsville IN. Teams consisted of 1 junior and 2 sophomores, therefore my role as the junior was to mentor and guide through the deliverables. The Hussey Mayfield Memorial Public Library of Zionsville hosted a large meeting with the interior design students discussing the current issues of the library. To begin the project, public library research was gathered and collected. Next, a document expressing the issues, desires, and needs was conducted and sent to the client for further information and approval.

26

This phase consisted of a PowerPoint presentation and presentation board, expressing new design ideas with a concept board, prototypical sketches, bubble diagrams, and matrix, The clients deliberated and chose the top 6 groups that would continue in this competition of 13 teams. This design was one of the winners that was chosen. From this point, all the students’ designs will be collected as marketing tools for the library.

Phase

1

This phase was presented as informal pin-ups. Designs were developed further creating a floor plan, ceiling plan, elevations, renderings, materials, furniture, and code analysis. . The floor plan was color coded by zones and cross referenced to a sheet that had all the FF&E information. This made it easy for the client to understand how the space would be used. The design selections were chosen focusing on the incorporation of sustainability used in the materials and finishes.

Entering the lobby, the visitor is directly led to a community gathering area with a variety of seating options. There is a doublesided fish tank , shelving, and bulletin board for posted events or information. On the ceiling of this community gathering area is a projected skylight from Sky Factory that will completely refresh the interior. The front desk is clearly visible with overhead way finding and promoting branding in the use of the library’s logo colors in different zones.

3-form was used in the self serve café so that the limited natural light could reach through to the employee circulation space. The brick accent wall has track lighting to give texture and floating shelves behind the coffee cart. The café has bench seating, access to the outdoor garden, and compressed ceiling height with the use of wooden beams.

In the circulation department, there are many shelving and storage options that meet the needs of their work activities. These shelves are in the wall to create a cleaner look. There is also a lounge/ break area for employees that includes their mailboxes and coat racks for jackets or other personal items.

Upon entering the building, the visitor is led into a vestibule and then the space completely opens up to a bright interior. The floor plan is very open and glass walls with tall ceilings make the space even bigger. Natural light flows through the space well. There is a straight path from the entrance which gives clear wayfinding and keeps the visitor’s interest going from left to right. The front desk is clear to see upon entering which is next to the restrooms and vending. There is a children's’ area on the opposite side, followed by private seating with charging stations. Walking near the back of the library there is a small quiet lounge corner surrounded by study tables and bookshelves. I noticed that as you walk in it starts as public areas leading down to more quiet focus areas. Circulation between these areas were very clear which made it a good experience for someone that was new to the library.

MATERIALS STUDY: At Williams College, a collaboration zone and a collections zone uses curved rails made from plywood. The high-density Maple plywood was used on the atrium for its design elements, subtle grain pattern, and light color. The wood brings warmth to the space. The light reflectors structural skeleton and ribs were shaped from heavy steel. The curved wood railings were conceptualized as nesting units. One advantage of Maple is dimensional stability. Crossbanded layers and balanced construction mean that hardwood plywood won't shrink, swell, or warp as much as lumber. It is in thin

plies, lying at right angles to each other, as well as the various types of core materials available. It produces uniform strength both with and against the grain.

NKBA Kitchen Design

In this NKBA Student Design Competition, the instructions were to create a kitchen layout within the given shell to fit 4 or more people. The design of this space is inspired by a modern take on a cottage style kitchen. The cottage aspects are implicated in the brick backsplash, lighting fixtures, range hood, and the gray earthly wood tones repeated in the flooring, drop ceiling, and window trim. The space is based off of a gray tone color palette. With all stainless-steel appliances, the cabinets are maple wood with a gray glaze finish from Merillat, and chrome Wilsonart countertops. The west wall features a window seat that can sit 3 people at the table, with two seats on the other side. This built in seating allows for a more open space. The kitchen can accommodate 5 people in the eating area.

The Gathering (9512 N Walnut St, Muncie, IN)

36

A church in Muncie, IN called The Gathering, reached out to the Ball State interior design department for new ideas for their church. The client’s primary goal in this project was to increase the number of classrooms for and utilize the space to meet their needs. To begin the project, a couple site visits took place where we measured the existing space to put into Revit. This also gave us time with the client to ask questions about the facility and the types of activities that are held. From gathering this information, the design solutions to the floor plan include the addition of a wall to separate the kitchen from the current storage area, adding the traditional staircase along kitchen wall for easier transportation of equipment to the second level of storage, addition of a half wall in kitchen for catering events, addition of egress on the East wall leading to playground, and the addition of 3 classrooms. Demolition Plan

The existing theme in the sanctuary correlates with nature using green tones and natural woods. The client asked to keep this style which is why we chose to utilize the structural columns and create a tree design shown below. For easier identification, the classrooms are organized by color and a type of nature theme. For example the orange room represents a desert, the blue room is themed based off of the ocean and underwater aspects, the green room represents trees and plants, the red room is ladybugs, and the yellow room is the sunshine room. Each of these rooms will have 1 color accented wall, carpet tiles with a hint of the theme color, and some furniture.

The exploded view shows the interior with an understanding of the walls and ceilings. Lastly, a walkthrough was made focusing on certain views while walking through the building. This was done in Revit first as a realistic quality walkthrough, and then a high quality rendered walkthrough. The final rendered walkthrough was then imported into Adobe Premiere, adding voice overs to highlight certain areas within the space.
