L GERRARDS CROSS LOCAL

Dear Readers

H

ello and welcome to the August edition of Gerrards Cross Local.

I’m going to risk it and say what a lovely summer we’re having (that’s usually the cue for three months’ rain), as summed up in our front cover illustration. But this is the magazine for get-someone-else-todo-it enthusiasts and that even extends to barbecues, so why not just pour some drinks and let someone else do the work? Give Crackling Hog Roasts a call - see page 5. Do you sometimes wonder what happens to all our money that goes on Foreign Aid? Well, there’s not much chance of secondhand school books and equipment being misappropriated; these are the items which volunteers at School Aid collect and send to children in Africa. And it looks like they have a great time doing it. If you can spare a few hours why not join the fun - details are on page 48. Please let us know of any charity/community events and, space permitting, we will include these free of charge. Keep Gerrards Local magazine by your phone and whatever your needs...

L HELP FOR YOU

Credit Scoring

C

redit scoring has become a key part of our financial lives. It impacts far more than most people think. It is not just about whether you can get mortgages, credit cards and loans, but can also affect contract mobile phones, monthly car insurance, bank accounts, even if you can pay energy bills the cheapest way. Even if you are accepted, we live in a ‘rate for risk’ world, so credit scoring then dictates what you pay too. Many people come unstuck by this. They apply for today’s record cheap rates, but find they’re charged more. So here’s what you need to know… You DON’T have a universal credit rating - there’s no blacklist. This is a myth. In the UK, there is no universal credit rating or score, there is no blacklist of banned people. Each lender scores you differently and secretly. So a rejection by one doesn’t mean a rejection by all. Their aim is to see if you match their profitable customer wish list. A key part is assessing the risk of non-repayment. If that is high, many won’t lend to you; but some specialist lenders will like you more as they can then charge more. Yet even those who are good risks can be rejected, because the lender thinks you won’t make them money. Or perhaps you’re applying for a credit card, but it wants to cross-sell mortgages, so scores you on how likely you are to get one. What they know about you. Lenders assess you with 3 key pieces of information: 1) Your application form. Many underrate how crucial this is. Be consistent on each application form, eg, job title, salary. Regular inconsistencies can result in rejection as you hit a ‘fraud score’ trigger. 6

August 2014

2) Any past dealings with you. A lender you’ve banked with can interrogate your behaviour far more than others. This can work both for and against you. 3) Your credit reference files. These come from either Equifax, Experian or Callcredit and contain info on the electoral roll, court judgments, what credit applications you’ve made, products you have and if you’ve paid on time. However, they don’t know everything. They don’t know your criminal record, medical history, speeding fines, salary, student loans, declined applications and more – don’t get too conspiracy theorist about it. How to make yourself more attractive. Like people, different lenders find different things attractive. It’s more art than science, but there are some cosmetic changes that work for most. Here are 10 tips. 1) Get on the electoral roll. If not, getting credit’s tough. Check if you’re on it and apply via www.aboutmyvote. co.uk. If you’re not eligible, write a notice on all the credit files that you have proof of residency. 2) Stability is good. If possible, put a landline number, not mobile, on applications. 3) Beware over applying. Too many applications for products, especially in a short space of time, can hurt. So if you’re about to get a mortgage, don’t apply for lots of credit cards just before. One problem though is that often the only way to know what rate you’ll get is to apply, so the system is anti-shopping around.

4) Time it right. Problems stay on your file for 6 years, applications for 1 year. So if you can wait until they’ve lapsed to apply, it should boost your score. 5) Never miss or be late on repayments. Small errors can cause big problems. Set up a direct debit to be sure you never miss. Do this even if just for the minimum repayment, then you can call up and pay more on top each month, see it as an insurance policy. 6) Don’t let ‘paid-for credit scores’ overly worry you. In recent years credit reference agencies have started to flog these, but don’t take too much notice. They’re only based on your credit file, not the other info lenders look at, and remember each lender scores differently. One may see cancelling a credit card as good as it reduces available credit, another as bad as it’s closing down a long term relationship. 7) Payday loans can kill mortgage applications. Some mortgage underwriters simply won’t lend to anyone with payday loans. 8) Deal with unfair defaults. First go to the firm that put them there and ask it to remove them. If not ask for a ‘notice of correction’ to be added to your credit file where you can explain briefly why it’s unfair and appeal to the Financial Ombudsman. 9) Check for address errors. An old, active, but unused mobile phone registered to your old address could even cause a mortgage rejection. 10) Don’t withdraw cash on credit cards. This is both expensive and seen as evidence of poor money management - avoid. L @moneysavingexpert

HOW TO SAVE INHERITANCE TAX WITHOUT GIFTING ASSETS? Having advised clients for many years, I come across two opposing attitudes in regard to inheritance tax (IHT). The first view expressed is that the kids are lucky to receive anything and if they have to pay a bit of inheritance tax, so be it. The alternative view is an intense desire to reduce inheritance tax and if one can avoid legitimately writing a cheque to HMRC, this is the favoured approach. Readers of this article might well be interested in the second approach. I am however aware that many clients are concerned about the need to protect their own interests; not wishing to go “cup in hand” to their children later in life for assistance with nursing expenses having gifted them the bulk of their assets. Ordinarily one needs to survive seven years for gifts to be completely exempt from IHT. However a quicker solution is available where an investment need only be held for two years to be exempt from IHT. Accordingly, we have increasingly been advising clients in recent years on investments that can benefit from Business Property Relief (BPR). BPR was introduced in 1976 and is a tax relief to incentivise investment in a trading business. Utilising this legislation, many investments are available which qualify for such relief and enable investment into a range of businesses which should be exempt from inheritance tax once held for at least two years and at the date of death. The underlying businesses can be asset-backed, providing some security through exposure to a variety of trades such as bridging finance, commercial forestry, renewable energy and farming. It may also be possible to structure a BPR investment through an Enterprise Investment

L

Scheme (EIS) where attractive tax reliefs can be obtained such as 30% income tax relief, capital gains tax deferral and even Loss Relief in certain circumstances. Finally, it is also possible to claim BPR on certain shares which are traded on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM). Whilst AIM shares are generally considered high risk in nature, we access a number of AIM fund managers who we believe can preserve and grow portfolio values, though this cannot of course be guaranteed. AIM shares can now be accessed through an ISA which can make this investment even more attractive. In summary, clients can establish a portfolio of investments which should be exempt from inheritance tax after just two years, providing a much quicker IHT solution than the gifting of assets. In addition, by retaining the investments in your ownership, you could access the funds in an emergency rather than having that “awkward conversation” with family members. I can discuss and recommend an appropriate strategy to reduce the potential IHT bill on your estate by understanding your current situation including capital and income requirements, your objectives and attitude to risk prior to making appropriate suggestions. Please note that AIM shares and EIS/BPR investments are often high risk, can be illiquid and can fluctuate in value markedly. You could lose some or all of your investment. Taxation is subject to change and dependent on individual circumstances.

Legal tips for new parents

Reports suggest the cost of raising a child and supporting them through university until the age of 21, is now over £227,000, which includes food and clothing, hobbies and education. Planning ahead and preparing for both the expected and the unexpected is something that the private client practice at B P Collins believes is essential. Senior associate Christine Moore, explains: “We know any parent will be completely focused on their latest arrival, but it’s important they take time out to consider how to protect and s upport their expanding family in the longer term. “There are many things new parents – and grandparents – can do at an early stage to help secure a child’s financial future, for example, by setting up a trust to pay for school fees, or dividing an estate in a particular way. “It’s also important that where there are already children from a previous relationship, careful consideration is given to looking after their best interests in the event of something happening to a parent.”

L

If someone in your family is expecting the patter of tiny feet, then prepare for life to change in a big way. As the child grows up, there are many financial and legal considerations to think about alongside the more day-to-day battles, such as persuading them to eat their vegetables or tearing them away from the latest social media trend.

As a new parent, consider the following tips: • Make a will to ensure your children are adequately provided for in the event of your death. You may have additional children in the future, so ask your solicitor for the best way to include them in the will. • Appoint guardians for any children under 18 so, if the worst happens, you know who will take responsibility for looking after them. • If grandparents are keen to help, then talk to them about Inheritance Tax planning. Putting a trust in place now can help with future expenses such as school or university fees. • Although children can demand their inheritance at 18, many parents take the view that they would prefer their children to be older and more responsible before managing a large sum of money. Trusts can be written into wills to ensure that any monies are only inherited at a

later date, although they could potentially be accessed to pay for items such as university fees. • Where there are children from different marriages or previous relationships, it’s important to consider how to treat them fairly, especially if one child is likely to inherit from another source such as a grandparent. A solicitor can help you explore the best way to achieve this. • This can also apply where an individual wishes his or her children to inherit capital from an estate rather than it passing outright to a spouse (particularly if it is a second marriage). Ensuring there are flexible trusts within a will can ensure assets are protected. • When dividing an estate between children, the ability to include lifetime gifts can be a helpful way for parents to help their children out financially, for example, when they are buying their first home.

L TECHNOLOGY

The smart time to buy a smartphone

S

martphones have changed the way we work and play, and even the cheapest ones are incredibly powerful. Phones such as Apple’s iPhone 5S, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and Motorola’s superbly cheap Moto E deliver lots of bang for your buck - but is this the right time to buy one? The short answer is: that depends on what you want. If you’ve got to have the latest, greatest technology then it’s worth keeping an eye on the calendar. Apple tends to bring out new iPhones every September, so there’s no point in buying the iPhone 5S when the iPhone 6 is imminent. A Samsung Galaxy S5 is a safer bet, though, because Samsung’s flagship phones usually come out in the spring. It’s worth checking out sites such as techradar.com to see what’s incoming: there’s nothing more annoying than buying something cutting edge, only to see it superseded a few weeks later. Not everyone wants the latest technology, of course. Many of us just want a good phone for a good price. For that, the trick is to buy the previous version, so for example when the iPhone 6 comes out the price of iPhone 5Ses - and the cost of associated contracts - will drop. The more recent the phone the more of a premium you’ll pay for it, and the more pricey the contracts will be - so for example HTC’s current flagship, the HTC One M8, is a great phone, but it’s significantly

16 August 2014

more expensive than HTC’s earlier flagship, the HTC One.

HTC One

There’s another reason to pay attention to the calendar, and that’s if you’re planning to trade in your old phone. If you’re trading in an iPhone 5 you’ll get more for it before the iPhone 6 comes out than afterwards, and it’s a similar story for other high-end smartphones: you’ll get a better price before upgraders flood the trade-in sites with their existing phones. It’s worth shopping around, though: for example, at the time of writing Carphone Warehouse is offering an extra £100 on top of any phone’s trade-in value on certain new phones.

iPhone 5S

If you want the best value for money it’s a very good idea to eschew Apple and high-end Android devices and look at

Nokia Lumia 1020

alternatives. There are stacks of very good Android and Windows Phone smartphones, and in many cases you can pick them up for a fraction of what you’d pay for a similarly powerful iPhone or Samsung device: for example, while a Samsung Galaxy S5 starts at around £99 up front and £33 per month for a basic contract, the rather nifty HTC One is free on a £25 per month contract. If you’re going to have your new phone for two years, that’s a big saving. It’s a similar story with Windows Phone smartphones. Nokia’s Lumia 1020, a 4G phone with a fantastic camera, is free on contracts costing £25 and up; if all you want is a basic smartphone the simpler Lumia 520 is just £7.25 per month with no up front cost.

Samsung Galaxy S5

There’s another factor you should consider, and that’s whether your current contract entitles you to an upgrade. Many pay monthly contracts do, usually after 18 months to 2 years, and such upgrades can cut the cost of getting a new phone (although it does mean signing up for another long contract with the same provider). Don’t assume that’s the best deal, though. As with most purchases, it pays to shop around. L

What on Earth happened in…

August 1997 E

arly on the morning of Sunday, 31st of August, 1997, I was driving into London on the A40 and the news bulletin came on the radio as I was passing RAF Northolt. Later that day a plane of the Royal Squadron would touch down at that aerodrome, carrying the body of Diana, Princess of Wales. 3rd: Two of the three islands of the Union of Comoros, off the eastern coast of Africa, near Mozambique, began negotiations in an attempt to return to French colonial rule, but Jacques Chirac’s government said “non merci”. Can’t be all bad then, this colonialism, can it? 4th: Jeanne Calment, the oldest person in recorded history, died in France at the age of 122 years, 164 days. Mme Calment lived on her own until she was 110, and is the only person known to have celebrated her 120th birthday.

Be Here Now, the third album by Oasis, became the fastest selling album in UK history, selling over 350,000 copies on its first day.

30th: An 83-year-old Greek man killed his wife because she ‘had a headache’. I don’t know what became of him after that but I like to think he is now with someone more compatible. Diana, Princess of Wales, left Sardinia on a private jet with Dodi Fayed, intending to stay overnight in Paris before flying on to London. 24th: British computer wizard Gordon Spence discovered 2^2976221-1 (the 36th known Mersenne prime). Oh come on, you must know what that means.

Three of the best selling singles were:

L GARDENS

Grow your own take-away L W e all know that homecooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little self-indulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden? No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go! Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry.

Pippa Greenwood

Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stir-fry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches. And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost. Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here aren’t the sprouts though, but the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and a touch of colour as well. Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a Britishbred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-topink inner flesh and spherical

white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time. Spring onions are another classic stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a superyoung onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok. And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your homegrown vegetable stir-fry. Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed. L

L HELP FOR YOU

The Legal Eagle Dean Durham protects your rights

T

hanks to a new European Law known as ‘The Consumer Rights Directive’ our consumer rights have been considerably strengthened. Under the new rules consumers are given higher levels of protection when shopping online (from both UK and EU websites) and on the high street. It is also hoped that the new rules will go some way towards combating rogue traders. So before you spend one more penny online or in store here’s what you need to know: When do the new rules become law? Now What are the changes?

RIGHT TO RETURN GOODS When you buy something online, on your doorstep or anywhere apart from within a retailer’s shop premises the period of time that you have to return the goods with ‘no questions asked’ has been increased from 7 to 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day that you actually receive the goods. Despite the new 14-day rule, if the retailer fails to clearly tell you about your rights to return the goods within 14 days, the return period extends to a year! If you purchase goods online from a trader outside of the UK there is now a standard EU form to complete for your refund, hopefully making the process easier due to the uniform approach. Ebay/online auctions If you buy from a professional seller via an online auction (such as on ebay) you now have the right to pull out after the auction ends, within 14 days. Refunds Sellers must refund you within 14 days of cancellation, including standard delivery costs. However, they can postpone the payment until such time as they have received the goods back from you. Hidden/additional charges Cost traps on the internet are now 28 August 2014

Tougher Consumer Laws prohibited. These means that sellers must clearly indicate what is included in the price that you are paying and you must be given the opportunity to confirm your agreement to this before pressing the ‘pay now’ button. · If you are not clearly told about a charge you will not have to pay it. So, if the seller adds a delivery charge but does not tell you, they will have to reimburse you. · Pre-ticked boxes are also now prohibited. This means that if you want to buy an additional service from the seller you have to ‘opt in’ by ticking the box, not ‘opt out’ by un-ticking. · Sellers can no longer charge more for credit card payments than it cost them to provide such a payment option. Customer care phone lines Many of the big brands have operated premium rate numbers for their customer care hotlines. This is now banned and instead they must only charge basic rate for such calls. Digital products · Anyone buying digital content will be able to get clearer information, including details on which software and hardware the content works with, as well as information on copyright protections. · Consumers will be able to pull out of purchases of digital content up to the point where downloading or streaming of the content begins. Are there any implications for businesses? Common rules for businesses will make it easier for them to trade all over Europe. Businesses making

sales by phone, mail or online, or away from their premises, will now have a single set of rules to follow. This creates a level playing field and cuts cross-border transaction costs. As regards small businesses and craftsmen, there will be no right to pull out of a contract for urgent repairs and maintenance jobs. Member States can also exempt traders doing repairs or maintenance jobs in customers’ homes for less than EUR 200 from certain information requirements. Are there any exceptions to the new rules? The new rules do not apply to package travel contracts, construction contracts and most financial services. Will retailers/online sellers comply with the tough new rules? Many will, some will blatantly ignore them and others simply will not be aware of the changes. It is now down to you as consumers to complain when these rules are broken and people like me to expose and pull up those that break or ignore the them. Are the new rules good for consumers? There is no doubt about it, these new rules represent the biggest shake-up in consumer laws in recent times. In my opinion the changes are all positive for consumers and on the basis that more and more of us are buying goods online from EU traders it provides a good platform for harmonizing how traders across the borders operate. L HELP FOR YOU

Frequently asked questions Q

We made simple Wills about 20 years ago when the children were very young and we didn’t have much to leave. They are grown up now and have children of their own – also we’ve moved house a couple of times, each time to a more expensive property. Should we be reviewing our Wills?

Q

A

A

Yes, you should – for lots of reasons. Your financial circumstances would appear to have changed and you may now need to consider potential Inheritance Tax issues and general Estate planning for your family. Legislation and tax rules have changed considerably in the last 20 years, which may have an effect on the way your Wills are written. There may be people mentioned in your current Wills who are no longer alive – you may wish to add legacies to grandchildren - you may wish to appoint your children as Executors now – these and many more are reasons to review and update your Wills.

My father died recently and my mother is the Executor of his Will. She’s not sure what to do and my brother and I have been trying to help her with the paperwork – but the bank and building society won’t talk to us. Also, my father had a lot of shares and some life insurance policies. What should we do?

Your mother needs to talk these matters through with a solicitor who specialises in this sort of work. She will probably have to apply for a Grant of Probate to enable her to administer your father’s Estate. She may wish to do this herself, with some professional assistance, or just hand over the paperwork to a solicitor to deal with it all on her behalf to take the burden from her and the family and to ensure everything is dealt with correctly. In the first instance though she should take some professional advice to see what is involved – there is no substitute for a face-to-face meeting and having matters explained to her in plain English.

PARCHMENT PARCHMENT LAW GROUP LLP Solicitors We specialise in:-

• Will Writing • Inheritance Tax Planning • Probate - Estate Administration • Lasting Powers of Attorney • Later Life Planning

Q

My mother has just been diagnosed with the early stages of dementia, although most of the time she is very with it and can cope living on her own. However, we have started to look through her paperwork and have become aware that she is in a bit of a muddle with it all. She has been

paying some bills twice and some not at all. Her doctor has advised the family to get a Power of Attorney put in place. We are concerned that if her condition deteriorates we will have to sell her house in order to pay for care fees. What can we do?

A

If your mother’s doctor feels that she currently has mental capacity to make a Power of Attorney, then a Lasting Power of Attorney can be drawn up so that the people of her choice and who are closest to her can be appointed to look after her Property and Financial Affairs (and possibly also her Health and Welfare matters) in the future if her illness becomes worse. This would necessitate a face-to-face meeting with her to explain the document and the process and ensure she understands this. This should be put in hand as soon as possible. If she loses the capacity to deal with her affairs and there is no Power of Attorney in place, then you would have to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order, which is usually more complex, takes longer and can be more costly. These questions and many others like them are the sort of queries we deal with every day. As you can see from the answers – they can all be resolved by seeking good professional advice. The team at Parchment Law Group can guide you through all these types of problems – it’s all in a day’s work for us – and we’re ready to help when you need us. Please note that these replies are brief and are no substitute for full advice, once the detailed facts are known. L

L HEALTH

Children’s Health:

Measles, Mumps and Rubella L

Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

‘C

hildhood diseases’ are often taken lightly, but they can be serious and with fewer children vaccinated, they’ve become more common again. MMR vaccine protects against mumps, measles and rubella, but some children (particularly those unvaccinated) will still catch them. Here’s a quick guide to symptoms and treatment. REMEMBER: Pre-warn your GP surgery before visiting, so they can take precautions against infection and protect pregnant women.

Measles A virus that can be severe. Always confirm the diagnosis with the GP. Symptoms: • Begins like a bad cough and cold; a temperature develops • On day 3 or 4, red raised spots appear, initially behind the ears then spreading to the face, neck and rest of the body. The spots may be blotchy, but not itchy.

DON’T FORGET: Keep your child away from pregnant women and those trying to conceive. If they had contact with any pregnant women (even before they became ill), you must let the women know - they’ll need to see their GP urgently. Incubation period: 7-12 days.

Symptoms:

A contagious viral infection.

• Begins much like a cold.

Symptoms:

• A rash of flat, light pink spots appears on day one or two, initially on the face then spreading to the rest of the body.

• Begins with generally feeling ill and uncomfortable, and a raised temperature. • Pain and swelling on the side of the face and under the chin. Discomfort when chewing. • Headache, stomach ache and joint pain.

Treatment:

• Bathe sore eyelids with warm water, and dim lights.

Confirm the diagnosis with the GP, as symptoms can be similar to glandular fever or tonsillitis. Always see the GP if your child develops stomach ache, is sick or develops a rash of bruises or small purple/red spots.

• If your child is drowsy, has trouble breathing or has a bad cough, see your GP urgently.

• Give your child paracetamol or ibuprofen. A hot or cold compress will ease pain in their glands.

42 August 2014

German Measles (Rubella)

Mumps

• Plenty of rest and drinks.

• Barrier cream to protect the skin around their lips.

Infectious period: A few days before feeling unwell, until the swelling goes down.

Rubella is difficult to diagnose, but you must confirm it with the GP. Rubella poses a significant risk to pregnant women and unborn babies.

Treatment: • Paracetamol or ibuprofen for discomfort and fever.

Incubation period: 14-25 days.

Infectious period: Four days before rash appears until four days after it’s gone.

Your child’s face should return to normal in around a week. Mumps rarely affects boys’ testes but if your child’s testes are swollen or painful see your GP.

• Your child’s eyes may be sensitive to light.

• Give them plenty to drink

• Swollen glands in the back of the neck. • Your child may feel ‘off-colour’ rather than ill. What to do: • Give your child plenty to drink, and paracetamol or ibuprofen if they feel unwell. Incubation period: 15-20 days. Infectious period: From one week before rash appears until at least five days after it’s gone.

L MOTORING

Porsche Macan P

orsche is set to bolster its position as market leader in the premium SUV sector with the launch of this, its new mid-sized Macan. An impressive range of engines, stylish exterior design and the German marque’s typically upmarket interiors all feature, but will this suave sports utility vehicle carve out a market for itself quite like the Cayenne? We find out... What is it? Porsche will tell you that the new Macan is not a downsized, shrunken version of the Cayenne SUV. They’ll gladly regale you with tales that the Macan’s shape takes great inspiration from the 911 and the 918 hypercar. They’ll even let slip that during the Macan’s testing regime, the 911 was used as a benchmark for the results. The fact is, however, the new Macan is based – loosely, it must be said – on the Audi Q5 and is a new entrant into the hugely profitable and popular compact SUV sector. Judging by the larger Cayenne’s sales history, it will sell by the bucketload. What’s under the bonnet? There’s the option of a 335bhp 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged petrol or a 254bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel. What with its 143mph top speed and combined fuel consumption of more than 44mpg, the latter is predicted to take 60 46 August 2014

per cent of UK sales. The range is topped off with the 394bhp, 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged Turbo – it’s ludicrously fast, but doesn’t put the lower powered V6s to shame as they are equally punchy. What’s the spec like? For now at least, the range is simple. Both the petrol and diesel Macan S cost £43,300 and come well specified with an electric tailgate, part leather/part alcantara upholstery, dual-zone climate control, MP3 connectivity and 18inch alloys. The Turbo at £59,300 adds 19-inch wheels with red brake calipers, sat nav, Bose sound system, leather upholstery with electric front seats and alcantara roof lining. There is of course a healthy options list for those with more to spend. All come with Porsche’s excellent seven-speed PDK automatic transmission. What’s it like to drive? All that marketing hype about this being the first sports car compact SUV is true – it’s a fine-handling thing. The steering is as crisp as it probably could be and thanks to 90 per cent of the car’s power being pushed to fat tyres at the rear, it’s well-balanced, too. Even when Sport and Sport + modes are prodded, the ride is firm but never unbearable. The Turbo is deeply impressive and will reach 60mph in just 4.6 seconds.

The Verdict Just over a decade ago, Porsche caused quite some controversy producing its first ever SUV. The Cayenne wasn’t what you’d call pretty but it successfully married true Porsche handling in a more user-friendly and everyday package. The new Macan takes that to even greater levels. With ample seating for five and loading space of 1,500 litres when the seats are folded, it’s a practical proposition. Its smaller dimensions make it far more agile on the road and it genuinely feels sporty to drive – think of an upscaled, four-wheel drive Boxster and you wouldn’t be too far wrong. It’s even rather good looking in our eyes. In our opinion, you’re looking at Stuttgart’s new UK best-seller. L

Gerrards Cross & District Committee

The Candlelight Ball

H

alf a million reasons to celebrate for Macmillan Cancer Support in South Buckinghamshire. Macmillan’s Gerrards Cross and District Committee, the only Macmillan committee in south Buckinghamshire, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and during that time has raised over half a million pounds. A special celebration, The Candlelight Ball, will be held at Stoke Place, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire on Saturday September 20th 2014. Tickets for this unique evening cost £50.00, which includes fizz on arrival, a three-course meal with wine, coffee and petits fours. There will be live entertainment and a disco. Along with a gift tree and live auction it promises to be an evening to remember which will raise much needed funds and all profits will go to Macmillan. It’s more important than ever that we continue to support Macmillan in our local community. Every day in Buckinghamshire ten people hear the devastating news that they have cancer. Macmillan has invested heavily in the local area with 90 healthcare professionals, either in the community or hospitals and

is committed to further investment to support people living with cancer. Macmillan provides Information Centres, e.g. in Wexham Park Hospital, and Health Care specialists; such as nurses, doctors and dieticians. Macmillan also funds financial advisors throughout the county, and of course the Support Line can be accessed by all. Cancer is one of the toughest fights most of us will ever have to face. All the money raised from The Candlelight Ball will go directly to people affected by cancer. Just £27 could fund a Macmillan Nurse for an hour; £100 could pay for a Macmillan Grant to help someone with their transport costs for daily radiotherapy.

Stoke Place is a prestigious, privately owned Queen Anne style manor house built as a family home in the 17th century, set in 26 acres of grounds landscaped by Capability Brown with a six acre lake and has been specially chosen for the occasion. The Candlelight Ball is sponsored by Yaldens, Hansford Sensors Ltd, Daiichi-Sankyo UK Ltd Pharmaceuticals, Nunn Hayward LLP, B.P.Collins LLP, Fairweather Insurance Ltd and Sytner High Wycombe. Are you an animal lover? Do you have a few hours to spare? Why not join our busy team of volunteers and help with the welfare of local animals.

Rabbits! L R Kerry White, South Bucks RSPCA

abbits, Guinea Pigs & Hamsters all make lovely pets and South Bucks RSPCA have many that are looking for loving homes. In fact, we have so many that some that have been in are care for well over a year. This is very sad for them and they are desperate to find their forever homes. Until we can find homes for some of these delightful animals we cannot rescue others that are in desperate need of our help. L

Confessions of a Cat Sitter L

Chris Pascoe

I

It’s been an exciting week, though it started sadly. The worst aspect of having a customer base of scores of cats is that every now and then one of them leaves us. My old friend of many years, Oliver, passed away at the start of the week, and as Oliver has always been one of my all-time favourite cats, it was hard to take. The only consolation was that he’d had a long and very good life, living in a giant house with a giant garden, next to open fields and miles from any busy roads. It made me smile though that one of his very last acts was to deliberately pee on a pricklyand-knobbly floor mat that he’d hated all his life – way to go Oliver! So, a bad start to the week indeed. And things got ever so slightly worse when another client rang to say they were emigrating and had to leave their lovely cats, Smithy and Charlie, behind. They’d been let down by prospective new owners at the last minute and Smithy and Charlie were off to the RSPCA that very evening. Did I by chance know of anyone who could re-home them, the owners

asked. I was suddenly on a few hours’ deadline. It was obviously much too early for Oliver’s feline-loving owner, Liz, to consider adopting again, but I did know of an old client who had lost her cat six months previously. I rang her straight away. ‘Hi Fiona, it’s Chris, your cat-sitter. I’m trying to rehouse a lovely pair of cats, and just wondered if you’d be interested?’ ‘Hi Chris, um, I’m not sure it’d be a good idea at all. He’s not very sociable is he? He can get quite nasty.’ ‘Who?’ I asked, wondering if their was perhaps a side to Fiona’s seemingly amicable husband, William, that I hadn’t noticed. ‘Freddy.’ ‘Who’s Freddy?’ ‘My cat - Freddy? You’ve been looking after him for three years…’ With slight horror I realised I’d called completely the wrong Fiona. There followed a grovelling apology and disconnection, and then, just seconds later, Liz called. When we’re meant to find cats, we find them, don’t we? Or they find us. But it’s always meant to be. I couldn’t resist telling Liz all about my embarrassing call to the wrong Fiona. But Liz wasn’t really listening;

56 August 2014

I’d lost her right at the start of my story – at the reason I’d called Fiona in the first place. Needless to say, Charlie and Smithy now live in a giant house with a giant garden, next to open fields and miles from any busy roads! Just a footnote with regard to this month’s column. I happened to read a lovely piece online recently, about an eight-year-old child who gave the best reason ever for the sad fact that cats don’t live as long as we do: ‘We’re put here to learn how to love people and be loved, and to brighten up other people’s lives, aren’t we?’ she said, ‘Well, cats already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long...’ Can you give a cat a home? Please take a look at the next page. L

e It doesn’t seem possible but our charity is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year! On average we home two cats every week, more if we have kittens. So that’s over 2,000 new homes found - no wonder we are always so busy! If you are thinking of adopting a cat we have many waiting hopefully for new homes. We still have some lovely pairs of cats waiting for a new start in life and a lap to sit on. Hobnob and Cookie - mother and daughter - are very pretty tabbies; Rooney and Ronaldo

are grey and grey tabby, brothers who are devoted to each other. We also have several other bonded pairs. L
