Loss of farmland for houses has reader ‘disturbed’ Eye in the sky photos a reminder of what will be lost: Reader Just a short note to comment about your eye in the sky pictures in the November issue of the Advocate (showing land where Flato Developments Inc. plans to build in Lindsay.)

Any person in their right mind would not appreciate lush green farmland that will soon be flattened and covered with new houses. Only people with nothing but money on their minds can see something good about these pictures.

These pictures show what this land should look like for the rest of time but shortly it will be jammed with houses four feet apart and paved streets.

If only our council and city staff could see the great mistake that is happening.

Missing bridge?

After retiring I was living in Bancroft and then I came to Lindsay for the first time in the fall of 2000 on my way to Stratford with my granddaughter to see a play. On Highway 36 I made a right turn onto Colborne Street and came to the river. My first thought was “there is a bridge over the river missing.” More than 20 years have gone. Any comments or thoughts on this?

I am writing with regards to the drone photography shown in your November 2023 issue, showing where building will take place by Flato Developments. I was so disturbed by the thought of all those gorgeous green fields of production being stripped away to build a community of houses that will be unaffordable to most people.

You know that once it’s gone you can’t get it back. I think if overpriced houses are going to eat up beautiful fertile agricultural land, then where is all the food going to come from to feed people?

And what about other concerns, like doctors, nurses, veterinarians, schools, hospitals, PSWs, palliative care workers, and more. Our hospitals are at the brink now. Wait times at the Ross Memorial Hospital emergency room can be up to nine hours, no fault of the doctors and nurses. They are run off their feet. And they want to build all these homes for more people? It just doesn’t make sense.

And if Wally Nugent thinks for one minute that these inhabitants will add to the community, well I beg to differ.

The next thing you know they’ll be shouting “Costco, Costco” and your small quaint town of Lindsay will have a new name of “Flatoville” and its charm will be lost forever, just like the lush green fields.

Job experiences matter, even as AI enriches our lives Roderick Benns wrote a thoughtful essay in the December edition of the Advocate called “In defence of work” and referenced a discussion with Elon Musk, who foresees a future in which work may not be necessary due to AI. In my lifetime, I have had 17 paying jobs ranging from paperboy in the late 1950s to director of project staffing for an international consulting company until 2018. I benefitted from every job and, I dare say, my employers benefitted from my work.

Today, I would not want the kinds of early employment I had in the past. However, I value each of them for the life experience I acquired. In retirement, I am busy as a writer addressing social and economic causes that matter to me. My use of Copilot (BING AI) to research topics has enriched my work which is the whole point of AI – to increase human productivity and prosperity.

With a 40-year career in IT behind me, I generally embrace technology advances because they have inevitably made life better for most people. While AI may come with some risks in the wrong hands, I believe the net benefits will serve humanity well.

Firm evidence for GO Transit in Kawartha Lakes In “Still waiting for the bus,” December Advocate magazine, the writer is applauded for spelling out a major issue for residents of Kawartha Lakes – namely the lack of access to intercity public bus services connecting to GO Transit.

After my recent trip between Lindsay and Toronto I can fully validate David Rapaport’s experiences, and the hardships encountered to access the GO stop at Highways 35/115 junction from Lindsay.

The recommendation to establish a GO link between Lindsay and other points, such as Peterborough and the GTA, however has merit.

There is firm evidence for establishing bus service but we need the active participation and support of several stakeholders. This includes MPP Laurie Scott, Kawartha Lakes City Council, and the minister of transportation. All of them have a stake in moving people safely, efficiently and sustainably across Ontario to improve the quality of life.

Intercity bus service needed David Rapaport's article on the lack of intercity transportation was spot on. I have written many times to the Advocate about the lack of bus services and tried to encourage everyone to write their MPP and city council.

We drive to Port Perry to GO Transit when needed but we may not be able to do that much longer. I have written many letters to GO Transit because they service a lot of smaller communities. We have students who have needs and we have an older population with needs, as well as many others. Please write to city council and your MPP.

Transit dilemma This issue with transit from Lindsay has been going on for years. I contacted Go Transit years ago about making a stop in Lindsay so our community would be able to travel. Now years later it is worse; there is no way for people who do not drive to leave unless they have family that can take them.

This is shameful that our area has done nothing to improve transit.

Council should be pressuring MPP Laurie Scott on this. Instead of building new houses lets get our transit up and running. I don’t understand why this issue has not been completed. What is the problem?

Glad the Advocate reminds people of the sacrifices soldiers made When I picked up the November Advocate I was surprised to see a picture of my late father, Gordon Gibbins, in the cover story of different people from the area that had joined the armed services many years ago.

My dad was just one of many thousands that had joined up to serve their country. Many were just in their youth and not knowing what they were getting into. A sense of adventure, maybe, or just to get away. Or, as my dad said, to help protect our country against an evil force on the other side of the world.

He never regretted signing up and he was one of the lucky ones that was able to return to our great country and live a full life knowing that he did his part to make Canada a safe and better place to live and raise a family.

I was glad the Advocate did an article like this to keep reminding people of the sacrifices that were made and hopefully are never forgotten.

Public meeting spaces critical to bridge differences Recently I read a theory that humans learned to move together, as one, as a defence against the threat of large animals. We have survived through history by engaging in mutual aid, cooperation and altruism. But something has gone wrong. The present dominant political narrative is one of competition and individualism. Social media algorithms polarize us, making us fear and mistrust one another. COVID isolation has weakened our social bonds.

I do not have the answer on how to turn things around, but my hunch is that it starts by physically bringing people back together to participatory democracy. We need to return to a politics of belonging, a system of bridging different aspects of community, rather than isolating people.

A major barrier to the development of strong, healthy, community relationships in Kawartha Lakes is the loss of affordable public meeting spaces. Many local groups are experiencing great difficulty in finding places to meet over the colder months. Our arenas, churches and community halls are all disappearing. With them go our ‘commons,’ our places to gather as thinking, feeling and caring community members.

These are places where people of different ages, socio economic status, genders, races, cultures, philosophies all come together in community. These places are central to our democracy; it is no wonder that as they disappear so does civil society.

Support for Ross Memorial I’ve had occasion to visit the Ross E.R. twice in the past few months for a recurring issue. The level of service and professionalism I have received on both visits, can only be described as outstanding. I congratulate all the recipients of recent awards and encourage all members of our community to continue to financially support our hospital.

Downtown experience not the greatest, says reader

There may well be some good shopping spots downtown but the experience is not the greatest. It may be interesting for the tourists, but as a senior there is a lot missing. For instance, there are no washrooms (except at the library), and the streets are not very good for walking, especially after bad weather. The stores are expensive and I cannot afford the prices. Shopping online is the only alternative.

As a former cancer patient and emergency services user (due to ongoing cancer treatment side-effects) I’ve always had wonderful treatment at Ross Memorial Hospital. Thank you to all those in the medical field and other support service workers who are indispensable to patient care. You have my deepest appreciation for the challenges you all face.

Lindsay residents honoured by Governor General Lindsay’s Pencho and Tsering Rabgey, with daughters Dr. Losang Rabgey and Dr. Tashi Rabgey, were presented with the Meritorious Service Cross by the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, at a ceremony at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, on Dec. 7.

The Meritorious Service Cross (civilian division) was formally created by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 to recognize Canadians for exceptional deeds that bring honour to the country. The Rabgeys fit these criteria, having devoted decades to promoting cross-cultural understanding and public education.

Originally from Tibet, the family came to Canada as refugees in 1971 and settled in Lindsay in 1974. Machik, the non-governmental group whose work began with the Rabgeys in 1998, has been promoting civic engagement, gender equity, and social innovation for a quarter century. Since then, Machik has become a bridge between Tibetans inside and outside of Tibet, and to the global public.

“We are truly honoured to receive the Meritorious Service Cross,” Losang Rabgey told the Advocate. “Machik’s work is only possible with the…support of a global community and the Lindsay area has long been at the heart of this community of care. Our gratitude to everyone as we push forward with Machik’s mission."

We all know how social media works.

If I choose to read one article on why Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should resign, then social media will feed me a steady diet of anti-Trudeau content.

(He should resign. I mean, the snow is here…shouldn’t he go for a walk in it to give his party a fighting chance?)

Similarly, if I read an article or two on how Pierre Poilievre is going to save Canada (by voting against dental care, I guess?) that’s all I will get. (In other words, just National Post headlines out the wazoo.)

After you’ve binged, say, five articles on how COVID vaccines contain microchips so the World Economic Forum can keep track of us all, Nana AI kicks in and forces you to audit an online science class or something.

The next thing you know she’s seeing actual articles like the following in her Google News feed: “North West Told Mom Kim Kardashian Her Met Gala Dress Had 'Dollar Store' Vibes.”

(Yes, for those who were blessed not to know this fact, the child’s name is North West. I mean, I’m all for providing kids direction in life but that’s a wee bit literal for me.)

But here’s where I’m going with all this. What if we had a built-in, maternalistic AI system to counter the algorithms? After you’ve binged, say, five articles on how COVID vaccines contain microchips so the World Economic Forum can keep track of us all, Nana AI kicks in and forces you to audit an online science class or something. Or maybe it’s just a gentle voiceover through your computer or phone speakers: “Hey, Jeb, it’s Nana AI. You’ve reached your limit for this news source, and I use that term charitably. Here’s the same topic you’re interested in with a twist; it contains facts.”

(Okay, in my mind Nana AI is whimsically sarcastic.)

TAKE A STEP BACK INTO THE 50'S!

So, it doesn’t matter what you choose to read, because whatever it is you’ll be fed a stream of it, whether it’s politics, music, or Hollywood trash.

Speaking of trash, that’s also how we get so much American content infused in our brains. Let’s say, in a weak moment, a woman clicks on one link about the Kardashians, only because she is shocked – shocked I say! – at the dress Kim Kardashian is wearing. lindsayadvocate.ca

I mean, things could go too far, admittedly. She could start micromanaging too many of our interests – like not letting you buy a latte for budget reasons.

Or she could lock your steering wheel as you try and turn into the Coach and Horses for a drink after work to save your marriage. But honestly, wouldn’t it be great to have something to counter those algorithms? Because God knows we can’t seem to figure out how to do it ourselves.

School boundary changes long overdue Owing to Lindsay’s current – and anticipated – growth, school boundaries are in a state of flux with big changes on the horizon for September. And a lot of parents aren’t happy.

Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) is considering expanding K-6 schools to become K-8 schools over the next two years to better make use of the space at King Albert P.S., Queen Victoria P.S. and Alexandra P.S. – three elementary schools that are not operating anywhere close to capacity. Such a move would decrease enrollment pressure on Central Senior, which has limited classroom spaces available.

In addition to these three schools, there is also surplus space at Fenelon Township Public School and Mariposa Elementary School.

The province has mandated that all schools in the catchment area must be full before another school will be built. That sounds sensible enough to us.

There is no doubt this represents a sea change in local education.

In Lindsay it has been a longstanding tradition to keep elementary schools Kindergarten to Grade 6, with kids then going to Central Senior for two years as a kind of prep school for high school. With the new proposal, Central might instead turn into a Grades 5 to 8 school for French Immersion students only. Many cities and towns across Ontario and across Canada do not have an intermediate school and there is no evidence-based need to keep this model.

Some of the blowback for the board from parents is typical of human nature in general; people do not like change. The prospect of a new school tends to worry parents (usually more than the children) about their capacity to absorb such change.

However, kids are adaptable and there is a strong case to be made for attending a school that is not overcrowded – even if it does happen to be in central Lindsay or the east end. Children benefit from exposure to a broad range of families from all kinds of socioeconomic backgrounds.

These boundary changes are long overdue. As we continue to grow, we must ensure our kids have the best possible education experience, no matter the building in which this occurs.

Lindsay’s growth will mean need for more doctors We have read every one of your editions since the beginning and have enjoyed them all. You are doing a great job and now with no local newspaper your magazine is really our only contact with the community.

We wanted to write after reading your November issue about how some small business owners are concerned about the future rapid growth in our area. We moved here in 2000 and have really enjoyed everything about living in a smaller community, having lived in Markham before and watching it grow very quickly from the mid 70s to 2000.

We too are concerned about the growth, because we are still with our family doctor after all these years of living here but we are getting much older and do not know how much longer we can still drive into Markham and Scarborough to see him.

We have registered with Community Care here in Lindsay to see if we can get a doctor when ours retires, or when we just cannot drive anymore. The concern is that we need many more doctors here now, and with all the new homes being bought and families moving in they will be trying to find one as well.

I wish there was a way of getting these developers to help with this problem, because it is not going to magically go away.

Agree to Disagree Lindsay is growing too fast

Keep the people coming

While there is nothing wrong with gradual, well thought out development, the current plans for Kawartha Lakes to build 6,500 new homes by 2031, and another 11,000 by 2051 largely in Lindsay, causes me to take pause. Will this be too much too fast, with a handful of builders and real estate professionals the only real winners? I say yes.

Let’s be clear: The previous council has a lot to answer for in fast-tracking developments on prime farmland around Lindsay. That said, properly managed growth can be good.

Before the city approves the bulk of these new developments, I need the following questions answered, and real government money committed.

When is the massive addition coming to Ross Memorial Hospital to service this ever-expanding community, and where is the new staff going to come from?

Where are the primary-care physicians going to be found to care for residents in this new Kawartha Lakes that will likely be older on average than almost anywhere else in the province?

Are any families with school-aged children moving to the community and if so, where will their kids go to school?

Where is the provincial money for mass transit links to Peterborough and the GTA? When is the province announcing highway expansion that better services the people of this new city of over 100,000 people?

Who is going to build these new homes? There is no local workforce development plan in place, and skilled trades are in chronic short supply.

Where is the additional ongoing provincial investment in childcare spaces, community and supportive housing, long-term care beds and emergency services?

Until I see fully costed plans in place that address the bulk of the questions above, I say no to much of the development planned for the city over the next two to three decades.

Manufacturing on the scale we knew it in the 1970s is gone, so we need other sources of tax revenue to ensure Kawartha Lakes continues to offer a great way of life.

Some of the people moving into those new houses will be retirees, while others will work at least partly from home, meaning they’ll also be shopping, dining and volunteering locally.

The past decade or so has seen renewed vigour in our downtowns, among local entrepreneurs and in our cultural sector. Why would we object to even more energy and diversity warding off stagnation in Lindsay and our other communities?

No matter how great their ideas or restaurants are, a newcomer’s purpose is not simply to improve the lives of current residents. And whatever we might think of the actions of some developers, new residents aren’t responsible; they just want, like us, a place to live in a wonderful part of Ontario.

We should all be concerned about dog whistles (not, I hasten to add, from my colleague on this page) like “we don’t need those people from Toronto moving up here and changing things.”

If you’d prefer Lindsay stay “the same” — read: overwhelmingly white — remember that newcomers have moved here and changed things for centuries. Groups ranging from Roman Catholics to Jews, Icelanders, people of Chinese heritage and others have been made unwelcome, sometimes violently. We can continue to grow and evolve without losing what makes Lindsay and Kawartha Lakes special. What our community will be is up to us.

Time to grow Lindsay’s downtown, says BIA chair Collingwood helps property owners with a 20 per cent break for fixing up and maintaining downtown properties

Wesley Found has a vision for Lindsay’s downtown.

The Lindsay Downtown Business Improvement Association chair imagines property owners, the city and province coming together to create 50-100 new living spaces above downtown Kent Street stores – a move that will breathe new life into Kawartha Lakes’ largest centre.

But Found wants to do more than just envision such a scenario. He’s hoping to spark serious discussion once an inventory of building usage is completed by the Kawartha Lakes Economic Development, expected in early 2024.

After years of neglect, Found says the main residents of the upper floors in downtown Lindsay “are pigeons.”

“I have heard that 40 to 50 per cent of the second-floor spaces are vacant and 70 to 80 per cent of the third-floor spaces are vacant,” he says.

“But I have had the pleasure of viewing some of these empty spaces and they are big, bright and beautiful, with great potential.”

Found believes that filling those empty spaces with permanent downtown residents would be a success story on all fronts.

“Economic growth starts with population growth,” Found says. “Making the growth dense by utilizing existing infrastructure is economically, socially and environmentally better for our community and the downtown.”

The BIA chair notes that a significant increase in residential units downtown would be a “captive audience (for merchants) and would in turn make the downtown more vibrant. Doing so will also be a buffer for any impending big box stores that will inevitably come with growth.”

Found feels a strong bond to Lindsay’s downtown; his own father was born in an apartment above what is now Burns Bulk Food in 1942.

“People used to live downtown and there is absolutely no reason that couldn’t happen again.”

Kent Street property owners take a chance Local entrepreneurs Sandra Falconer and her husband Tom Callaghan took the plunge as property owners and renovators in the downtown when they bought the former home of Yardy’s Office Supply six years ago.

The couple, along with a rolodex of local contractors and

skilled tradespeople, gutted the building top to bottom, creating a new commercial space on the first floor where Falconer runs Appleseed Quilt Works, and two long-term Air BnB units located on the second floor.

The two units were 95 per cent rented last year, allowing many new people to experience Lindsay’s downtown.

“I absolutely support downtown densification,” Falconer says. “Our guests love living in the downtown. There is always something happening.”

While their year-long restoration went as smoothly as could be expected, Falconer describes the reality of what they faced.

“The biggest problem for us was ensuring the building met the fire code,” Falconer says. “Both floors of the building needed to be empty to retrofit for the fire upgrades. We had to gut the building to the studs to upgrade the services. We were lucky the building had been tenanted so there were no development charges levied by the city, and that behind the building there were four spaces which satisfied the city’s

need for providing parking.”

Falconer says to get other landlords to consider conversions someone must give them the incentive. “This costs so much to do. It has taken us six years to recoup our investment in the building.”

Found believes in municipal incentives, too. He said that city money spent on giving landlords a break would “be a net positive investment in the short and medium term both for the property owners and the municipality because if downtown residential tenancy increases, the municipal MPAC assessment goes up which property taxes are levied on.”

He also believes any provincial money spent would have an impact in densifying the general tax base and the provincial levy on property taxes.

The BIA chair says these kinds of big changes scare landlords, and he wants to see the municipality, through its Community Improvement Plan (CIP), assist landlords taking on these projects.

15 minute communities Kay Matthews, executive director of the Ontario Business Improvement Association, supports Found’s goal of downtown densification in Kawartha Lakes.

“We want to see more 15-minute communities where everything is within walking distance of where a person lives.”

Matthews agrees with Found that municipal incentivization has to be part of making downtown densification happen. She suggests the municipality could incentivize fixing up properties as part of their CIP. One of those incentives could be a reduction in taxation on a newly renovated property for five or 10 years. She also says there is “red tape and numerous barriers” that need to be eliminated to make builds quicker by retrofitting the buildings that are already there and hooking up to infrastructure that already exists.

Despite the real costs mentioned by Falconer, when a community gets behind their downtown, anything is possible – at least from the view of cities that have been there before.

Sue Nicholson, the general manager of the Collingwood BIA, is bullish on her downtown.

“We are a designated heritage district (just like Lindsay) and we are seeing many young professionals wanting to live in the downtown core,” Nicholson says. “Condo/commercial developments now anchor both ends of our downtown. People want to live in the city core as it is adjacent to everything they need.”

Collingwood does not have a CIP. Rather they assist property owners with money through their Heritage Committee, including a 20 per cent break on taxes for landlords who fix up and maintain their downtown properties and grants of up to $3,000 a year to landlords for property improvements.

Nicholson says only one building remains vacant in the entire downtown core.

“Densification of the downtown brings customers to local business.

For Kyle Marcus, general manager of the Sudbury BIA, he credits several programs funded by the municipality as key to the densification going on in his downtown.

Their CIP has a residential development program that provides up to $20,000 in municipal money for each unit renovated (and rented).

“People used to live downtown and there is absolutely no reason that couldn’t happen again.”

“While it is not nearly enough it is a start,” he says, noting that Calgary, Alberta runs a similar program and provides $100,000 for each unit renovated.

“We also have a façade improvement fund that will assist with repairs and improvements on any part of the building that is visible to the public.”

Marcus also says it’s about municipal leadership.

“Our old mayor told businesses it is not the city’s job to clean up the downtown,” Marcus says. “Our new mayor (Paul Lefebvre) has made it clear the importance of our downtown and the need for the city to invest in the downtown.”

He is particularly proud of Sudbury’s “Welcoming Streets” program that has two outreach workers available from 8 am to 2 a.m. to assist businesses in the downtown core deal with those struggling with addiction, homelessness and mental illness. These outreach workers, rather than police, respond to crisis situations, helping make the lindsayadvocate.ca

downtown a safer and more attractive place to live.

The cost – and the future When asked by the Advocate about the possibility of new downtown living spaces being created, Kirsten Meehan, communications, advertising and marketing officer for Kawartha Lakes says anyone interested in making changes to their vacant units should “get in touch with our planning team to see how they can move forward.”

But if Lindsay’s downtown will see the kind of development Found is envisioning, the real issue landlords need help with is the reality of having to retrofit neglected buildings – and dealing with the new rules that would apply to the renovation.

“Once a unit is vacant for more than two years, it is no longer grandfathered by the bylaws or building codes that it was built under,” Found explains. “That means converting the old buildings (and their apartments) to match current building (and fire) code, face development charges (during the rebuild) and provide street parking (or apply for a cash-in-lieu minor variance) for each unit before it could be offered to a potential tenant.”

Found also points out that landlords have trouble borrowing the money they need for these new apartment builds because with only the main floor generating income, their property values are significantly depressed.

Banks base the amount they are willing to lend on the operating income of the property.

All that being said, Found is optimistic that with “thoughtful collaboration” this vision for the downtown can happen.

He says downtown Lindsay “is faring better than the Ontario average with healthy shops, low vacancy rate and high demand for space.”

19 Cambridge Street South in Lindsay to have a new lease on life

Shoppers leaving the front doors of Cambridge Mall daily come face to face with a curious-looking building on the opposite side of the street. Pale yellow in colour, with a modified jerkinhead roof, it has seemingly been here forever.

While some residents might shrug their shoulders indifferently, others might fondly recall its previous incarnations as a bus terminal and a restaurant. Still others will wonder what will become of 19 Cambridge Street South, as this property is formally called.

Wesley Found, the owner, has exciting plans for the place – but is keen to preserve as much of the building’s heritage as he can.

The building dates to the late 1800s, when it served as a livery stable. Livery stables served a similar purpose to a modern car rental company; horses and horse-drawn carriages could be hired from such a business while travellers were in town. A row of narrow windows towards the back of 19 Cambridge Street betrays this former function; these openings apparently denote the old horse stalls. A generously-proportioned front entrance, meanwhile, permitted the movement of carriages and horses in and out of the building, which for several years sported a sign advertising “Lindsay & Trotter Livery & Hacks” (hacks being horses that were rented out for riding). The “Lindsay” in this sign referred not to the town, but to Bob and Charles Lindsay, whose business was one of at least five liveries operating in the community during the last quarter of the 19th century.

Sept. 29, 1887 saw Samuel Hughes – later a member of parliament and federal cabinet minister – acquire the property from Charles W. Silver for the grand sum of $700. Here, Hughes published the Victoria Warder newspaper for a loyal readership while also enraging his critics. (Canadian historian Tim Cook, in his book The Madman and the Butcher: The Sensational Wars of Sam Hughes and General Arthur Currie, reports that Hughes once faced an assassination attempt while serving as publisher and editor of the Warder; perhaps it occurred here at 19 Cambridge Street?)

Hughes was long gone by June of 1946, when 19 Cambridge Street reverted to its transportation roots in the form of the Union Bus Terminal. Opened by Ed DeNure, the bus terminal did a booming business through the 1950s and into the 1960s. Complete with baggage checking services, a lunch counter, and waiting rooms, the building saw many residents and visitors pass through its portals upon their departure or 22

arrival in Lindsay. A generation later, the old structure was welcoming diners in a new role as Joel’s restaurant.

From horse-drawn carriages to printing presses to bus passengers to lunch patrons, 19 Cambridge Street has been home to a variety of people and purposes.

That’s a tradition Found would like to continue. The second-storey apartments have been renovated for living, but of special interest is the 3,000 square-foot main floor space.

Found would like to see it used for hospitality, or perhaps a venue for the arts.

Regardless of how 19 Cambridge Street is transformed, there can be no question that it will continue to contribute to downtown Lindsay for years to come.

More options than ever for youth at BGC Kawarthas

Lindsay and area families will soon notice a significant change at the Youth Warehouse, the dedicated space for young people in Grades 7 – 12 operated by BGC Kawarthas at its facility on Lindsay Street. With an historic investment

by Kawartha Lakes in the 2024 operating budget, the warehouse drop-in will open its doors on Saturdays and through the summer.

What exactly is offered now, you might wonder? First and foremost, the Youth Warehouse is a safe, welcoming place to go after school. It’s been in operation for 10 years, but since our construction of a state-of-the-art skatepark, more youth have been drawn to its door.

On the surface, it’s a youth-friendly place where they can hang out, meet other kids, have a snack or a meal, participate in sports or fitness, or maybe explore some music programs.

Underneath, it goes much deeper. Staff who are trained to identify kids’ needs are the backbone of the centre.

They provide early intervention and prevention mental health supports, help young people hone their coping skills, learn the keys to positive relationships, better manage their behaviours and understand the dangers of substance use.

Staff are experienced in life skill coaching – from nutrition and cooking, to wellness, to homework and career planning.

When observing the unique needs of each young person, they help connect them to the right community services.

Just the other day, a grandmother told me that the Youth Warehouse has been life changing for her grandson who had been truly lost before it became part of his daily routine.

So, what is so important about the city’s investment? Without sustainable funding, warehouse drop-in programs have

been constrained to five days per week, and only during the school year. Often, youth are most at risk on weekends and in the summer when they don’t have the routine of school.

That’s when they need mentors most of all.

With a small operating grant from the city, the Youth Warehouse will address this gap. The drop-in will be open on Saturdays and throughout the summer in 2024, bringing services here more in line with youth drop-in programs operated in our surrounding municipalities where programs often operate all year long in city-run facilities.

In years to come, with the support of the city and other local partners, it’s our hope that we can also grow youth services into some other centres in Kawartha Lakes to meet the expanding needs in our growing communities.

Locally, it started with the extraordinary vision of Ron Kennedy who established Kawartha Youth Incorporated in 1970. Barely getting by A living wage in Kawartha Lakes is pegged at $20.60 per hour. But these local residents say there’s no way to live on that, let alone the minimum wage.

Late last year, the Ontario Living Wage Network (OLWN) announced their calculations for the amount of money it takes for an hourly wage earner to “cover their basic expenses and participate in their community.” In our area, the magic number is $20.60 per hour, according to the OLWN. Basic expenses include things like food, shelter, clothing, childcare, transportation, medical expenses, a phone and internet, a modest vacation and one continuing education course. The influences of government transfers and taxes are also accounted for. The living wage calculation does not include home ownership, debt repayments, saving for a child’s education, or retirement savings.

Nikki Judson and her husband Jay Dunn say that number is quite frankly “impossible.”

They have two children under the age of three. Both earn more than the living wage, though she is on maternity leave, currently taking home 55 per cent of what she did when working. She says there is no way they could survive if they each earned $20.60 per hour.

“Cannot be done. Everything has gone up – diapers, clothes, property tax, car insurance, food. Bacon is $8! And there’s no end in sight.”

The couple lives on Galway Road and their somewhat remote location makes for a lot of driving. “We drive farther

to get groceries. And with limits on the number of garbage bags we can put out for pick up, we end up having to drive our extra garbage to the dump. Formula has gone up and it is scarce. You end up driving all over to get it, and have I mentioned the price of gas? We have never had a vacation unless you count going to Walmart.”

Brooke Mahas would agree with that assessment. The 28-year-old personifies being trapped in the gig economy.

At one point the university business school graduate was working five part-time jobs, but she has scaled it back to three now.

While she would prefer to be working in marketing, the expense of living in a city where those jobs are common – say somewhere in Durham Region or Toronto – has deterred her. “Even commuting is too expensive and doesn’t leave time for much of a social life, or to have a side hustle.”

Instead, she holds down a job at a local grocery store, works as a model, and has a fledgling online clothing store found at @doesntevenmatterclothing. After a romantic relationship ended, she moved in with her parents rather than take on a rent payment by herself of $2,500 for a basement apartment in Bobcaygeon.

“I live paycheque to paycheque and it is starting to have an effect on my mental health. With my university debt I just feel like I’m playing catch up.”

Living wage calculations may be off in reality because they are based, in part, on conditions that have swiftly changed.

Some of the information used is from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and from larger centres, the nearest to Kawartha Lakes being Peterborough. There, as of October 2022, one should have been able to rent a two-bedroom apartment for $1,339 – certainly a deal not to be found today.

Another source of information the OLWN uses is the Canadian Rental Housing Index, generated from the Canadian Census individual long-form. Since this includes rental data paid on granny suites, basement apartments and so on, in theory it should be more current. But according to it, in 2021 a Kawartha Lakes two-bedroom would go for $1,300.

Again, a deal not to be found.

The two-year lag, compounded by the economic influence of the pandemic, accounts for part of the difference between the stats and what is happening on the ground. But it doesn’t change the fact that in Kawartha Lakes, a living wage – while a vast improvement over Ontario’s $16.55 minimum wage – is still short of what people really need.

Given the minimum wage rate, employers have a significant gap to make up if they want to pay a living wage. The Ontario Living Wage Network certifies employers who have committed to paying its employees a living wage. While there are definitely companies in our area that do pay living wages and more, only one has taken the steps needed to receive the OLWN’s endorsement.

According to Norah McCarthy, president and CEO of Kawartha Credit Union, they sought certification because, “it supports our commitment to be socially responsible and demonstrates that we treat our employees with respect, care, and have their best interests at heart.

Crystal Dayman, executive vice president, adds, “For Kawartha Credit Union, being a living wage employer ensures that our employees are treated equitably and work in safe and fulfilling environments,” and employees feel increased loyalty to the credit union, too.

Craig Pickthorne, communications coordinator for the OLWN, says there are actual cost benefits accrued by paying higher wages. He says employers benefit from greater productivity when an employee is not fatigued from working a second job, and the worker is more likely to remain in the job, reducing recruitment and training costs. He adds that there is a benefit to the wider economy since that extra money is spent in the local economy.

Stephen McConnell, 34, doesn’t believe even the living wage of more than $20 per hour would work for his life, either.

He works as a heavy equipment operator with Buckhorn Sand and Gravel just north of Bobcaygeon. After working several years in the oil patch, he returned to the Kawarthas and has found that his dollar does not go as far here as it does in Alberta, mainly because of housing costs.

Fuel for commuting is a big expense too, he admits, “but that’s my choice to drive a pickup.”

He says it takes a lot more than $20.60 an hour for someone to live and enjoy some social activities and not just “work, go home and eat, sleep then wake up and repeat.”

“It is not surprising to see people working under the table to try and make an extra bit of folding money. It usually gets pumped back into the community anyway.”

The Advocate contacted others for this story, interviews that didn’t end up in this article. They asked for anonymity because they had a second job they didn’t want their main employer to know about, or because their entire income came from undeclared cash. However, it should be noted that all earned more than the living wage, but none could see getting by on that amount.

In fact, several other people we spoke to acknowledged that they were only able to make ends meet by taking on a second job, working under the table, or taking in renters off the books, but didn’t want to go on the record for obvious reasons.

The one constant that most of our respondents brought up as a barrier to getting ahead was the high cost of rent. Living wage calculations include an amount for rent, but even employees who were paid at or above a living wage, were frequently unable to afford a place to live.

McConnell can believe that. When he moved back from Alberta, he realized he wouldn’t be able to manage the housing costs once he took a look around at the local rates.

“I live with my parents and contribute to the household. I get by, but throw in an actual $2,500 a month for rent and I’d be concerned.” LA

Minimum wage, living wage, basic income.

What’s the difference?

A minimum wage is the lowest remuneration that employers can legally pay their employees.

A living wage is an estimation of the minimum income necessary for a worker to meet their basic needs. But there is no legal requirement for an employer to pay it.

Brooke Mahas feels trapped in the gig economy, working as a part-time model (such as in this recent holiday shoot with @inspiredbygriffinphotography) while also working on developing her own clothing line, and working at a local grocery store.

A basic income is a payment to eligible couples or individuals that ensures a minimum income level, regardless of employment status. It is different than social assistance because a basic income can be given to anyone who meets the income eligibility criterion, and so can be given to someone who may be working but earning below the basic income level, with the goal of preventing poverty.

Charlie McDonald, councillor for Ward 7, was elected as the deputy mayor for 2024, taking over the role from Councillor Tracy Richardson.

A lifelong resident and business owner in Kawartha Lakes, McDonald is known to many through his involvement with the Terry Fox Run and as owner of the old Grand Hotel and Grand Experience. He is serving his first term on council.

“I’m very passionate about Kawartha Lakes and want the best for the community. I’ve learned a lot this past year, and I understand there’s a lot more to learn. It’s a hard act to follow after Tracy Richardson, with her compassion and dedication,” said McDonald.

He says his mission is to continue serving as a champion for the rollout of the short term rentals program. As chair of the task force that brought the program together, he believes these rentals “are an important part of our economy, but they need to respect year round residents.”

The new deputy mayor also notes that in October 2024, Kawartha Lakes will host the International Plowing Match.

“This is a great opportunity to support our newly revitalized downtowns. Let’s show off everything we have to offer from tourism to business opportunities,” he said, noting he will continue with former deputy mayor Tracy Richardson’s focus on the “Did You Know” approach to ensure communication and customer service remains at the forefront.

“Residents have shown us they appreciated it and are looking for more ways to stay engaged. I’m looking forward to the year ahead.”

Richardson said she was thrilled with the level of engagement from more than 500 residents regarding the value of the video series she championed.

“I also heard that folks are in the mindset to learn more and engage. We have the tools already, we just need to remind people how to access the tools. Once they (use) Jump In, they will be better informed, and we’ll be stronger with more opinions being exchanged,” said Richardson.

School boundaries set to dramatically change

Massive change is on the horizon for area students as Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) gets set to redraw neighbourhood boundaries.

Every child currently in Kindergarten through to Grade 6 attending public schools in Lindsay will be affected in some way by the proposed boundary changes, scheduled for next September. In a community consultation meeting held at LCVI in late November, about 60 parents gathered to hear about Parkview Public School’s boundary review.

“The biggest concerns I think most parents shared, is that this meeting was not just about the Parkview boundaries but rather all the schools in the area,” says Lindsay Quesnelle, mother of two who was in attendance that evening.

Quesnelle points out the board is looking to change the school model from K-6 to K-8. Currently, Central Senior School is an intermediate school. She says that school is slated to become a French immersion school over the next two years (which) “I know surprised many of us.”

Leanna Segura, mother of four, agrees that the loss of Central Senior as a Grade 7-8 school may be a concern to local parents. “I have always thought it was a great prep school for high school.”

The rapid development in certain neighbourhoods in Lindsay has been a key factor in the overcrowding of three schools.

Parkview Public School, Leslie Frost Public School and Central Senior School are all bursting at the seams with an over population of students. While other nearby schools (Alexandra P.S., King Albert P.S., Queen Victoria P.S., Fenelon Township P.S. and Mariposa Elementary School) are operating at a much lower capacity.

According to the TLDSB website, establishing school catchment areas within specific boundaries will help balance school enrollment and capacity, minimize transportation, and maximize walk zones.

Wes Hahn, director of education for TLDSB, says “we aim to provide all students with the best possible educational experience, and the school boundary review will help us to ensure we are able to continue supporting high-quality educational programming, student achievement, and well-being.”

Segura notes that changed boundaries were “bound to happen at some point with all (the) development.”

Quesnelle says the growth of Lindsay "is not just to the north. It encompasses the entire town. In five years, we will be having to readdress boundary issues. The answer is for a new school to be built.”

case to be made to the Ministry of Education for a new build, all existing schools closest to the development area need to be over capacity and have little ability to accommodate more students. Quesnelle understands this but she feels the board and parents “need to put pressure on the (Ontario) government as this is an urgent situation to address.”

She says Lindsay’s schools are very old “and vary drastically in square footage, yard space and availability of transportation.”

A recommendation on the boundaries for all area schools will be taken to the trustees at a meeting on Tuesday Jan. 23 to determine where students will be learning in the fall.

Segura puts a positive light on the shuffle. “At the end of the day, it’s their education that’s the most important, not the school they attend.”

Don’t judge a book by its cover Librarians may not look like social workers, and they’re not. But they’ve become pivotal partners to support and connect those who have fallen through the cracks of the system.

Early libraries in Mesopotamia — now known as Iran — loaned clay tablets to patrons. These tablets were handetched and baked in the sun.

That means libraries have been around for about 5,000 years.

The Persian librarians of that era could not have imagined an evolving library system that encompasses not only paper books but also music, movies, classes, modern tablets, computer technology, and other resources. Moreover, they would not have known that future libraries would step up to respond to societal needs in times of distress.

Jamie Anderson, Kawartha Lakes Library CEO and director, says, post-pandemic, many public libraries across Canada are finding themselves as the triage centres on main streets and downtowns, supporting social services and managing crisis response on the ground level.

He notes librarians are not mental health professionals but are often the first person that somebody would interact with and would be referred to human services.

“So we’re often dealing with people now who kind of fall into the cracks over the years and COVID kind of pushed them over the edge.”

After the pandemic, a sense of connection returned, too.

Conversations spaced six-feet apart through masks were not prohibited at the library. According to Anderson, small bits of interactions were meaningful. “I wouldn’t call it mental health services, but I think just another human being you can talk to,” made a difference.

Libraries have always been important places for families.

Lindsay resident Meg Geraghty and her two boys, eightyear-old Beckett and six-year-old Foster, frequently participated in in-person library programs before the pandemic.

They particularly enjoyed children’s programming, such as reading clubs and craft time. During the lockdown, Geraghty utilized the online catalogue to place books on hold for her family.

“I’ve continued to use this versus browsing as I can quickly find what I need.”

Anderson said the libraries stepped up their children’s programming with take home craft kits along with short YouTube video tutorials made by staff — to show the parent how the craft was done. He adds, “Many authors gave permission for libraries to record a librarian reading their book and posting it online.”

Beyond support for families, though, the library has always been more than just a repository of books, education, and reading material. It has provided a safe, accepting space for connections. Acquaintances, neighbours, friends, family, and library staff would gather to chat, enjoy learning experiences, share recommendations, and perhaps assist each other before going their separate ways. However, with the pandemic, that vital connection was severed, leaving borrowers with a sense of social malaise that could not be remedied by a library card alone.

“The biggest support we could give to people is by being open,” Anderson adds.

“As long as you’re not sleeping and not disturbing other people, (and) you’re following the rules of conduct for everybody, you’re welcome to stay.”

Anderson said for those arriving outside of library hours, the Wi-Fi is strong, allowing people to read the news, check their mail or catch up with friends on Facebook before opening hours.

A library card offered a plethora of downloadable resources, just a click away as well. But for patrons without digital access, or who were not technology savvy, the pandemic highlighted a rift that librarians worked to address by getting physical materials to the public.

People without internet access could phone ahead and place holds on materials or staff would make recommendations and have bundles ready at the door for pickup. Staff also put flyers in books ready for check-out that highlighted newer titles.

While the pandemic closed the libraries, it didn’t stop librarians from serving patrons online or in person.

The Kawartha Lakes library initiated their low-tech storywalk program in 2019, but it really took off during the pandemic. These storywalk pop-ups featured pages of books posted on large yard signs around outdoor trails. The fun, educational activity paired literacy with physical activity and encouraged families to get outside. Since then, many pop-ups have been set up around the city with a grant to install permanent displays at Settlers Village in Bobcaygeon.

“There’s no cost, and we’re not judging you on anything you’re using.”

While most would not consider the library a transportation hub — it is for Lindsay’s Karen Lynn. “The Lindsay library downtown is the only place I know that provides the monthly bus pass.” Since she works downtown, the location is convenient.

For others, the Lindsay library is a stopover point for people going towards Peterborough or from Peterborough to the Durham area. It’s not unusual to see people camped out under the front overhang on Kent Street in front of the children’s library.

“Nine times out of 10, they’re gone by about 8:30 or so in the morning.” Anderson adds, “If they’re a little longer, especially if we’re not kind of recognizing them, we will contact human services just to make sure that they’re kind of in the system or in the process.”

While libraries are known to offer classes and personal help with software and technology, this is more important than ever. Library staff can help format resumes and help patrons brush up on their Word, Excel or Office skills.

Anderson says people like to come in for one-on-one sessions with reference staff if they must take a test or pass an interview.

Library card holders also have access to items to try before making a commitment to purchase them elsewhere.

Crafters can book a lesson and buy basic supplies for the library’s Cricut machine. It’s a digital die-cutting machine that cuts paper, vinyl, and other materials for use in craft projects.

Those seeking a boost of vitamin D during the dreary winter months can utilize the library’s seasonal affective disorder (SAD) light. These special lamps simulate the sunlight that is scarce in darker seasons, potentially alleviating seasonal affective disorder and depression. Anderson mentioned that individuals often stop by to grab a newspaper, spend 30 minutes beside a lamp, and then continue with their day.

Anderson said of the Cricut machine and SAD light, they

give people the opportunity to try them out and see if they are items they want to use and purchase, or just keep coming back to use the ones in the library.

Books on the shelves is still their big business, but what they see now is a growing demand for programming. “Our programming attendance has gone up. We are on target to be a 50 per cent increase over what we did in 2019 for programming attendance pre -COVID,” said Anderson.

He notes a lot of parents really want to get the kids out of the house and away from their screens. There is also pentup demand for adult and senior programs. He doesn’t want to downplay them, but says in a lot of ways, it’s more about the social aspect. “You just want to be able to get together with other people, face to face, and talk to them and see them.”

According to a 2023, three-year study from the Canadian Urban Institute, the funding gap between the growing number of programs and services being provided and the resources to do so, is staggering and growing, but libraries offer great economic return with what they do have.

For every one dollar invested in Canada’s urban libraries, $6 is generated in community economic impact, a return of over 600 per cent.

What does it take to be a hall of famer?

What does it take to truly be considered excellent – so excellent, in fact, that a hall of fame might bestow recognition?

The Lindsay District Sports Hall of Fame, established in 1993, was created to do just that. It honours the legacy of local sports by highlighting area athletes, teams and “builders,” individuals who have made a significant contribution towards sport in the community.

On an annual basis, nominations are brought to the volunteer board for consideration. They evaluate submissions, including supporting letters of recommendation. To date there are over 130 inductees, with memorabilia proudly displayed on a rotating basis within the glass cases of the Lindsay Recreation Complex.

After skating and competing with the Woodville Club through secondary school, the first from the area to win gold levels at many levels in single competitions, she continued to pursue her passion at Seneca College before returning to begin a career in coaching. Once finished, Denise first landed in Cannington and then expanded her reach across the area including at home in Woodville. Coaching brought more to Denise’s life than expected, as she sees it as “so much more than teaching the sport; it’s about helping and guiding these kids through life’s ups and downs, sharing in so many individual skater’s journeys.”

Denise has been incredibly active in the skating clubs, coaching at all levels and skills - from learn to skate to power skating for hockey; co-creating the Kawartha Competition Team; drawing in Olympic skaters for training sessions

Though an inductee wins the invaluable recognition of their efforts, the hall of fame also provides monetary support to a couple students a year who are pursuing sports education at higher academic levels upon graduation from a local high school. Despite a pause in the hall’s activities during the pandemic, the bursary has rolled out more than $25,000 to more than 30 students in support since its inception in 2005.

For 2023, there were four nominees: Claus Andersen, Harrison Carter, Denise Harris and the Bobcaygeon Junior D Hockey Team 1965-66. Not to be overlooked, as without them sport doesn’t thrive, volunteers are recognized annually through the Kelly Doyle Long Term Community Volunteer Service Award. This year’s recipient was Wayne Hunt of Pontypool. Over the next few months, the inductees of 2023 will be profiled to highlight their extraordinary efforts, contributions and achievements in sports.

Denise Harris Denise Harris first laced up her skates in Woodville at the age of seven and has never looked back, the ice remaining a focal point of her life as a skater, coach, instructor and mentor to so many in the area. It’s hard to be a part of any figure skating club in the Kawarthas and surrounding communities and not know Denise’s smiling face.

and performances; and mentoring and influencing the lives of so many skaters in Kawartha Lakes.

Now she shares her knowledge with other coaches across the province through her role with Skate Ontario. Her commitment and impact was evident to the hall, who had never received such passionate testaments for an individual’s contributions to sport.

As a skater, Denise reflects on some of her fondest memories hitting the ice in Woodville when the manager would let her zip around solo on some early mornings. “He would tell me he was going to go to the local restaurant to get coffee. I was alone in the rink.

Just me and the ice.” Those days are behind her, but her presence in Woodville remains strong as she continues to coach at the club.

“So often I think back to those days and I still find it hard to believe I continue to stand out there on the ice.” The figure skating community’s outpouring of support for Denise re-

flects her impact, and she hopes the sport continues to grow in the area across all ages, for “people young and old to have an opportunity to find the joy in skating.”

Follow-up: Central Ontario Wolves live to see another season The AAA hockey association of the area, the Central Ontario Wolves, will remain in place for the 2024/25 season, after a motion from the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) AAA selection committee was struck down by the OMHA board of directors in early December. The committee had proposed transitioning the organization from AAA to AA levels. Further details were not made available by the OMHA, though changes are expected in future seasons. The AAA committee is tasked to augment the competitiveness of hockey at the AAA level and expected to continue to reduce the number of teams across the eastern conference.

Call for Participants: Research on Basic Income in Lindsay

Project Overview: Students of Trent University are Partnering with The Lindsay Advocate to explore the impact of the Ontario Basic Income Pilot program on individuals, families, and communities in Lindsay. This research aims to understand the potential benefits and challenges associated with implementing Basic Income policies.

The Lindsay Muskies U13 Rep team were the undefeated champions of the prestigious Silver Stick hockey tournament in Midland in early December.

Malone Golden is a local high school student and member of The Lindsay Lightningbolts Swim Club. She recently brought home two gold, two silver and two bronze medals from a swim meet in Pickering.

Local climate change action group for seniors starts postcard campaign

changes in the weather and its disastrous impact on the environment. We are fearful of what the future will be like for future generations. A good number of seniors’ climate organizations have formed to push for greater government action. One of them, Seniors for Climate Action Now! (SCAN!), is also pushing the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) to do its part.

As we embark on a new year, those of us living in Kawartha Lakes have not-fond memories of summer last year when the air was so hazardous with wildfire smoke that it was unsafe to be outside. And then there was that dervish of a torrential hail and rainstorm that left flooded streets, downed trees and power lines, ruined crops and a swath of property damage in Lindsay and surrounding areas.

CPPIB is the organization that invests CPP’s funds. It is a crown corporation, separately managed from the CPP and operates at arms length from government. Its mandate is to invest its assets with a view to achieving a maximum rate of return, without undue risk of loss, and to manage the assets in the best interests of the contributors and beneficiaries.

We all know this is climate change – unpredictable and extreme weather, caused by emissions from the production and burning of fossil fuels. Scientists and inter-governmental bodies such as the International Energy Agency have warned that the world is not on track to meet the Paris Agreement of keeping global warming well below two degrees, let alone the 1.5. degree threshold. They have issued urgent warnings on the need to immediately stop fossil fuel expansion, rapidly reduce the use of fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy.

In our lifetimes, seniors have witnessed huge

Although CPPIB has committed to being net zero by 2050, it has no clear plan aligned with the Paris Agreement and refuses to establish targets on how to achieve this commitment.

It has $22 billion invested in fossil fuel companies both in Canada and abroad. It refuses to divest from fossil fuels. Instead, it relies on “engagement” on climate change risks and opportunities with the companies it is invested in.

SCAN! has developed a series of hard-hitting postcards so that current and future beneficiaries can tell the CPPIB to divest from fossil fuels and invest our money instead in climate solutions.

There’s no shortage of exciting investment opportunities that can reduce reliance on fossil fuels. These will also create the jobs and equity supports of a just transition for workers and communities currently dependent on the oil and gas industry. We need green transportation solutions such as electric transit buses, electric school buses and electric trains. We need investments in climate-safe buildings and infrastructure.

It is our money, after all. Let’s tell CPPIB to invest in a world that is safe for our children and grandchildren, for current and future beneficiaries.

behind “planet wrecker in chief” the United States. Our expansion plans equate to opening 117 new coal plants.

The Natural Gas Bake Sale When my mom baked cookies, pies, or cakes for the church bake sale that meant less dessert for us, but it was raising money for a good cause.

That’s the line proponents use in telling us that shipping Canada’s liquified natural gas (LNG) to Asia will help those countries get off of coal, thus reducing their climate-harming emissions. Somebody’s got to do it, and it’s for a good cause.

But that self-interest cloaked in good intentions can’t stand the smell test these days.

New studies show fossil gas (or “natural” gas) is as bad as coal for the environment if you include emissions from not only burning the stuff, but also producing and transporting it. That’s because fossil gas is mostly methane, a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. The latest research by methane scientist Bob Howarth of Cornell University shows that it’s at least 24 per cent worse than coal.

Not only that, but it looks like selling off our fossil gas would bump up natural gas prices here at home. Basic economics: if supply goes down in Canada (because we’re shipping some off shore), the price goes up. That’s what U.S. utilities have been telling regulators and customers. As Rocky Mountain Power explained recently to the Wyoming public service commission in defending a 30 per cent rate hike, “the increased competition (from exports) over domestic supply has driven regional natural gas fuel prices upward.”

Then there’s our own emissions. More export terminals and pipelines increase methane leaks in addition to helping the industry boost production. A recent study calls out the 20 most “planet wrecking” countries, ranked by their plans for fossil fuel expansion from now to 2050. Canada ranks No.2,

The International Energy Agency (IEA) warned in a recent report that demand for fossil fuels will peak on or before 2030. That means all that new infrastructure will soon become stranded assets – and a huge waste of money. Not to mention that the IEA has warned we can’t afford to expand gas and oil production if we want to maintain a liveable planet.

While Canada is a top-10 emitting country, it’s true that we currently contribute less than two per cent to the world’s emissions. But the World Resources Institute puts that in perspective: of the almost 200 countries in the 2015 Paris climate accord, the combined emissions of the bottom 100 contribute only 2.9 per cent.

One final point. The flour mom used to bake those pies and cookies was a renewable resource. Wheat is planted and harvested annually. Fossil fuels are a non-renewable resource that take millions of years to form naturally. We need to conserve what’s left.

When it comes to fossil fuel extraction, we’re digging ourselves into a climate hole that’s more like a cliff edge. So, what can we do about it?

Call Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson (613995-1225) and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault (613-992-6779). Tell them to say no to any new licences or permits for pipelines or gas and oil production.

Tell the Ford government to back off expanding natural gas infrastructure in Ontario.

Remind them that the first rule of holes is to stop digging.

a trip up to the Bobcaygeon area to determine whether it would prove suitable for skiing – especially as the hills around Toronto that year were deemed to be disappointing on account of a mild Christmas season. Eight years later, a meeting was held in the local council chambers to ascertain interest in establishing a Lindsay Ski Club. “A large number of young people in Lindsay have taken up skiing in recent years, and while not enjoying the benefits of a club, they are having a great deal of fun just having small ski parties,” reported the Post ahead of the meeting on Jan. 9, 1936. Another four years would pass, though, before the club was formally organized, on Jan. 10, 1940. It later fell into abeyance but was revived for the 1949-1950 season under the leadership of Steven Saganski, Stan Tozios, and Evan Owens, among others.

Hitting the slopes: Ski hills in Kawartha Lakes

It was an opportune time to be a skier. The Peterborough Ski Club had acquired land about a mile north of Bethany from Harry O’Brian in 1936 and set about developing a ski hill that in later years would be known as The Ranch. A 1948 description of the property praised it as “a skier’s paradise giving every type of slope one may desire; gentle open slopes for the beginner, wooded trails for those who like cross-country touring and steep slalom, or dangerous down hill runs for the more expert.”

It’s a cold day in the middle of winter as you alight from the chairlift and, with your poles, prepare to descend one of the steep hills overlooking the bucolic countryside of Manvers Township. The slopes are busy, and you gingerly begin to glide down from one side of the hill to the other, gazing in awe at the skill of those slicing through the snow on their slick-looking skis and snowboards.

By the time you reach the bottom, these people will be on their way up the lift again, amicably chatting about which hill they will tackle next: will it be an intermediate slope, with a grade of 25-40 per cent, or might it be a “black diamond” hill with a sobering grade of 40 per cent or higher?

You, meanwhile, decide to take a break and adjourn to the chalet for a cup of hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire.

Scenes like this played out over the decades at a ski resort northeast of Bethany that opened for business a little more than 60 years ago by Velfrid Holmberg, an Estonian immigrant. “Known as the Devil’s Elbow, the new setting offers enthusiasts 100 acres of ski area, 1,700 foot double T-bar rope tows and a ski school,” noted a short item in the Feb. 19, 1964 issue of the Lindsay Daily Post.

An institution for more than half a century in Manvers Township, Devil’s Elbow was but one chapter in the story of alpine skiing here in what is now Kawartha Lakes.

As early as 1928, members of the Toronto Ski Club made

Such a venue attracted not only local skiers, but also those flocking to the region from urban centres. Stories abound of Lewis McGill and other Manvers-area farmers bringing Toronto-based skiers to the Peterborough Ski Club’s hill by horse-drawn sleigh, after picking them up at the Bethany railway station. Upon arrival, these intrepid skiers used one of two rope tows to ascend the hill and warmed up in a chalet that had been built around 1939.

Not to be outdone, another ski hill was opened closer to Omemee and was in operation through the 1960s. John Russell, a teacher at LCVI, served as instructor of the junior ski school at this hill later in the decade, while Harry Johnson prepared lunch, doughnuts, and hot chocolate for over 100 children enrolled in the ski school program.

This hill, long since abandoned, is still remembered by former residents of the area. “We met at the Lindsay arena on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. where our wooden skis were tossed into the back of the bus that took us out to the Omemee hill,” recalls Liz Shanks, née McQuarrie. “There was only a long rope tow and four runs at most that came down

to the chalet. I remember very cold days and dry crisp snow and hot chocolate before getting back on the bus at noon for the trip back to Lindsay.”

As they grew older, many of these skiers would migrate to Devil’s Elbow after it opened for the 1963-1964 season. “The chalet at Devil’s Elbow was a popular place and the food there was good,” Shanks says. “By the time we were skiing at this, more popular place, the activities and conversations over lunch were as much a draw as the skiing.”

Devil’s Elbow – the last of the hills between Bethany and Omemee – closed its doors in 2018, forcing local skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes somewhere beyond Kawartha Lakes. For them, though, the thrill of slicing through freshly groomed snow is an experience that will never quite melt away.

This article is dedicated to the memory of Dan Brett (19842022), the author’s cousin and a passionate snowboarder, who grew up in Manvers Township and later relished a good day on the slopes in the mountains of B.C.

The year 2023 was another year of correction in the economy and housing market.

Moving with the Crowd

After pausing interest rate hikes for four months, demand surged in the first quarter of 2023.

Many potential buyers and sellers characterized 2023 as a bad year, opting to wait until 2024.

For buyers, this was a combination of rates topping off along with housing prices coming down from all-time highs in early 2022.

By the numbers 2023 was a slow year, as interest rates continue to limit buyers affordability and sellers holding onto price expectations seen over the pandemic.

When housing prices surge year over year we risk a housing bubble.

The Bank of Canada has been raising interest rates since March of 2022 to stabilize supply and demand in the economy.

The Bank announced on December 6th, 2023 they will maintain their 5% policy interest rate (prime rate 7.2%).

Since raising interest rates, inflation has come down from 8.1% (June, 2022) to 3.1% (October, 2023).

Faith had a passion for teaching from a very early young age. Her career started at age 19 in a one-room schoolhouse in Brantford in 1949 and continued in schools in Markham and North York.

She retired in 1986 but often expressed a desire to return to the classroom well into her 90’s. She left a lasting impression upon her students and her family, and will be sorely missed.

I’m sure my journals over the years would show lists outlining ambitious plans: by 2005 I wanted to own “x.” By 2015 I wanted to be “y.” And yet here I am, in a year that seemed science-fictiony in my youth, with more than a few unrealized goals.

Except for the super high achievers among us, we all experience this to some extent. The same can be said about our communal goal setting.

Climate change is real, and it is increasing at an alarming rate. Of course, it has been allowed to become a political issue.

Take the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Healthy Environment Plan (HEP) for example. Released in 2019 after two years of extensive research and community consultation, the HEP is a very aspirational plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and take other measures to mitigate the effects of climate change within the city.

While very light on policy mechanisms and costing, the HEP is bold in its targets. Aligning with federal and provincial targets, the plan calls to reduce GHGs produced in the city to 20 per cent below 2015 levels by 2030.

The HEP sets a high bar for the political leaders and city staff: “We will be leaders in addressing our changing climate

to ensure a healthy environment and a prosperous community.”

I receive every public-facing communication from the city. Maybe it’s just me, but I am not feeling that envisioned leadership on climate change.

Where are the annual report cards?

How have we done in the five years since the plan was announced? How is our 2030 target (which is a short six years away) looking? Why don’t we have more electric vehicle charging stations? Is the city fleet moving off fossil? Can we spur innovations in agriculture GHGs? Climate change is real, and it is increasing at an alarming rate. Of course, it has been allowed to become a political issue. And there are possibly current councillors that doubt the science of climate change. Thing is, science is not an opinion. Late last month the entire world met at COP24 (the UN Climate Change conference). Items being discussed there include timing the complete phase-out of fossil fuels.

The science is real. Our climate is changing. We must take action now.

And by action, I mean education, local mitigation measures (building codes, transportation), and advocacy where needed to higher levels of government.

It doesn’t matter if a climate change denying bro with a diesel stack lets off a performative smoke show when passing an electric vehicle. That way of thinking will one day be extinct.

Council should ignore that misguided sentiment and start being the leaders they aspire to be.
