How we’re serving you better

When we created the Advocate magazine 32 issues ago, we knew we would use it not only to tell important stories, but also to create change that would benefit the community.

For example, we led the fight to save Lindsay’s hospital from amalgamation with Peterborough’s; we helped put basic income on the national radar; we pushed for a national pharmacare program; we rallied for I.E. Weldon’s International Baccalaureate program, which gives our area a competitive edge; we pushed LifeLabs to make changes to support our senior population; we regularly write in support of small businesses. (And they, in turn, are the lifeblood of the Advocate in our community.)

We pride ourselves on being the only independent and 100 per cent local news media outlet that also publishes in print. We also have more contributors than any other media outlet in Kawartha Lakes. (And we don’t make you register when you read our online articles.)

Our flagship and heart of this operation may be our print magazine, but our online Advocate is dynamic and jam-packed with breaking news and features about city council, education, special events and more. We write so much that we can’t possibly fit it all into our print magazine, and so we’re thankful for our thousands of readers online, too. Our social media presence is an actively moderated discussion on local issues. As well, Jessica Topfer recently joined our team as digital content manager, thanks to a grant from Pinnguaq, and is doing amazing work. The Advocate attracts co-op students, too — young people we are eager to work with.

Early in 2020 we launched the third component of the Advocate. The Advocate Podcast: Stories of Kawartha Lakes, is like a radio show you’d hear on CBC. You log onto lindsayadvocate.ca, scroll down a little, and on the right side you’ll see the Advocate Podcast image. Just click and listen — it’s that simple. (Warning: Once you listen to one episode, you’ll be hooked.)

Host and producer of the show, Denis Grignon, is a former writer and onair presence at CBC Radio in Ottawa and has lived here for more than 20 years. All of this is made possible only because Wards Lawyers in Lindsay is sponsoring this great community program, which our thousands of listeners appreciate.

Earlier this year we asked you to support us with a small monthly donation — and many of you did. Thank you. We have put this money toward paying writers to do more stories and to improving the Advocate overall. If you’re able to make a small monthly donation to us to help keep the Advocate going and keep improving it, visit lindsayadvocate.ca. In the right corner in red text find Support Us. Or call 705-341-1496 or email kawarthalakespublisher@gmail.com.

We hope you find we’re bringing you the most professional, authentic and worthwhile media experience in Kawartha Lakes.

From all of us at the Advocate, we wish you and your family a safe and happy Christmas and the best of the holiday season.
