Unitech Aims at Curbing Crime By James Ibitali The Chief Security Officer (CSO) Mr. Alex Warren and his officers at Unitech in Lae are seriously concern about minimizing crime related issues in the campus.Mr. Warren said that he has a policy of security recruitment every year so that crime rates in the campus can be reduced to the lower level. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MATHESON LIBRARY Compiled by Francisca TOYEN

AT the heart of the University’s academic life is the wellequipped Matheson Library. The only technical library in the South Pacific region outside of New Zealand and Australia. It consists of two stages, the first stage of the library building was completed providing 230 readers seats and shelving for 50 000 volumes. It was officially opened by the Chief Minister Michael T Somare on 9th December 1972. And the second stage of the library structure was approved and construction began in July 1976 to September 1977. And was named in honor of Sir Louis Matheson in 1975 who retired after 10 years serving as member of the council, Chairman of Council and then Chancellor of the University. The Library Project cost K900,000 and the total cost including all furniture

and equipment was around K1 million.

The building was fully air conditioned with a designed capacity to cater for 480 readers and 80,000 volumes. Special features include an 80 seat film theater, the University artifact collection, a display gallery and the PEACESAT Satellite Terminal. It was designed by the Architecture Film – Goodsir, Baker and Wilde, Brisbane, Australia and constructed by Morobe Constructions. The

library was officially opened in 1977. In 1989 they introduced the Catalogue form cards to the computer. The introduction of Broadart (American) as a cataloguing system was in 1990. And in 1991 the Inter – Library Loans started using the internet ahead of the University to gain access to materials from the British Library, the new library system (Athena) introduced to replace the Broadart system was done in 1999. And in 2015 the digitization section was established in the library till today.
