Children’s book teaches life lessons Ranch life as seen through a horse’s eyes By Faith Bemiss fbemiss@sedaliademocrat.com Faith Bemiss can be reached at 660-530-0289 or on Twitter @flbemiss.

C

ombining horses and education, a new children’s book teaches life lessons while speaking through the voice of a lead ranch horse named KTM. “Adventures at Von Holten Ranch KTM” is the first book in a series by Brandy Von Holten, who owns an equine riding facility with her husband David Von Holten in Mora. Brandy Von Holten and her horse KTM look over her first children’s book “Adventures at Von Holten Ranch KTM.” The book is told in the voice of KTM and addresses life lessons. Photo courtesy of Creative Photography by Kim Hansen.

Von Holten was a science teacher for 11 years before devoting herself full time to the ranch and equine competitions. Writing the book is due to her love for horses and education and it comes with an

injection of moral values. “I saw where these horses have personalities and how I could convey that over to character education,” she explained. “It basically hit me like a brick wall, of combining horses and my science knowledge, and education and character education.” Since its publication two weeks ago, Von Holten has sold and shipped almost 300 books nationally and internationally. In the U.S. she has shipped books to Missouri, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Illinois, Maryland and Arkansas. Von Holten hopes to speak at schools and other organizations about the book. Her first event promoting the book was Thursday night at The Avenues Third Thursday event in downtown Sedalia where she brought along the book and KTM. As part of the book’s promotion, she and KTM will be on the cover of Hoof Prints magazine in November. The book has also opened the opportunity for her to attend Equifest of Kansas in February. “It has over 20,000 patrons, each year,” she noted. “They are going to have me in their Kid’s Corral twice a day reading chapter one to the kids. Then, they actually have me bringing KTM so it’s an authentic learning experience.” WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL

Adventures at Von Holten Ranch KTM” addresses the “power of one.”

“It’s about him wanting to make a positive change in something he sees a problem with,” Von Holten explained. “He sets his mind to a goal and then (explains) all of the problems he has to overcome to reach that goal.” Von Holten is planning on writing a five-book series with the next book featuring JoJo the mule, which will address prejudice. “A lot of people don’t allow mules to compete, there’s actually a lot of prejudice against mules because they’re a hybrid animal,” she said. “So, his book is about looking different but still going for your dreams and your goals.” The third book will feature her horse Chalkboard and will talk about dealing with a difficult childhood. “Small but mighty” is the subject of the fourth book featuring Von Holten’s horse, Glamour, who is small. The fifth book looks through the eyes of her dog Katie, who is a protector. The book will address standing for what is right even when one is scared. Von Holten noted events in her book are true. She would wait for an event to take place for KTM so she could write it into the book as a life lesson. At the end of each chapter, she has Reading Recall Roundup, questions and answers about the chapter. It is also illustrated with color photos of KTM and other ranch animals. “I want to get a book into every child’s hand so they say, ‘can you read this to me?’” she added. “Adventures at Von Holten Ranch KTM” is suitable for children ages 8 through 12. For more information, visit vonholtenranch.com, call 660-668-0880 or email vonholtenranch@yahoo.com or visit Von Holten’s Facebook page. Von Holten said the first 1,000 copies of the book will feature KTM’s hoof print and her signature. She has already sold almost 300 books nationally and internationally since the book was published two weeks ago. Photo by Faith Bemiss | Democrat

THE BASICS OF SAFE HORSEMANSHIP

If

you have owned or ridden horses for awhile you may think that you are a pretty safe rider. However, if you are new to riding you may be thinking, how can I really be safe. I see in some instances people who've ridden and owned horses for awhile, that become complacent or maybe too relaxed about working around or riding horses. And sometimes that complacency can cause us to have an accident. Well, get ready for some basic rules that are always a good reminder. 1. Praise often, punish seldom. Firm gentle treatment will gain your horses respect. Learn appropriate ways to praise and punish. I've heard it said that the horse has a 3 second window for praise or punishment. That is in that three seconds, that's what that horse will remember. This is so the horse associates the praise or punishment with the given behavior. 2. Stop, look and listen. Think about your actions and what's around you when working with horses. Horses are reactive and can be frightened by loud noises and sudden movements. 3. Never stand directly behind or in front of a horse. This may seem obvious, however it has to do with the way the eyes are set on the horses head and how they see. Monocular vision allows a horse to see different things through each eye. Binocular vision allows a horse to focus on things with both eyes at the same time. Because of the way horses eyes are positioned, they have small blind spots directly in front of and behind them when their heads and necks are straight. (Equisearch.com) 4. Horses should never be hand-fed. This can create the bad habit of biting. If you feel the need to give your horse a treat, drop it in a pan or bucket for them to retrieve.

November 2018

8

5. Keep at least one horse length between your horse and the horse in front of you. Crowding the horse in front of you may be irritating and cause the horse to kick out, then causing your horse to be injured or uncontrollable. 6. Check equipment for proper fit before you mount. Improper fitted equipment may cause and accident or injury to horse and/or rider. 7. Always use a halter and lead rope to tie your horse and never tie with the reins. If the horse become frightened and pulls back, its mouth may be injured and the bridle may become broken.

8. Treat equipment with care and always put it away properly. Simply . . . it costs a lot of money. Properly cared for, your tack will be easier to use and last longer. 9. Never wrap or tie anything attached to your horse around your body in any way. Doing this may result in bodily injuring or breakage. I can think of all sorts of injuries associated with this one, and it's one rule I feel we may become too complacent with. 10. Dismount to make adjustments to clothing or equipment. So simple, but if your horse is not expecting movement, they may spook and leave you behind. 11. Dress appropriately for the type of riding that you are doing. Long pants or breeches to prevent sores on your legs, boots (English or Western) with heel to prevent your feet from sliding through the stirrup or feet being injured from getting stepped on.

Be confident and direct in your actions with no hesitation around your horse. Organization and safety awareness can go along way to building a great relationship with your horse and having many good rides. Next month we'll progress to being safe on the ground around your horse, tacking up and mounting. By: Schellie Blochberger CHA Instructor, APHA/AQHA Professional Horsewoman OHSA Judge

A Breath Of Fresh Air

I

often speak to people about how important it is that you keep breathing when you are interacting with your horse. I know that it can be a challenge to do at times when the circumstances can be pushing you into a state of mind that is calling for your attention. Usually in these often-intense situations a reflex that we have is to hold our breath which can cause us to become rigid and we can lose the poise that we normally carry. Have you ever experienced this in your life or am I the only one? Circumstances in life have one thread of common ground to every person. Really to everyone? Yes, to everyone. The choice that we make on how we look at them. We can choose to go with the flow and make our actions and words pleasant for those around us and ourselves or we can grumble and complain and blame everyone and everything and come up with every excuse known to man and few that have never been heard of to justify our unhappiness.

M

y hat is off in appreciation to the group of competitors that came to our 4th annual Halloween trail competition that Cindy and I host at our place. You talk about elements coming at us we had them. Rain forced us into our small indoor, but we joined together and put obstacles up inside and between rain storms we went to my outdoor to work cattle. It was crowded inside, and it was slick outside. Our photographer, Lori Aschbrenner, looking similar to Mary Poppins with her umbrella, protecting her camera from the sudden raindrops, always had a smile on her face along with her assistant; daughter Gabriella.

owever, with smiling faces and spectacular attitudes from all we kept going. Cindy did help to save the day with some of her famous smoked ribs! Thanks a lot Cindy!! The breath of fresh air was that not one complaint was uttered, and we finished the day with both old and new acquaintances and a great time was had by all! The circumstances were effectively felt with the choices that everyone made to just be happy and have some fun. After all isn’t that the reason we ride Horses to begin with?
