Kidsmarkets ‘Mumpreneur’ takes on the Cardiff Baby & Toddler Show A Cardiff mum who set up a market business helping parents to ‘cash in from clearing out’ is set to expand into larger events, as she takes over running the Cardiff Baby and Toddler Show at Cardiff City Hall on 17th November. Kidsmarkets developed quickly into regular events across South Wales, taking place in Cardiff, Cwmbran, Cowbridge and Penarth. parenting expert,

Sue Atkins

www.katiebarrettphotography.co.uk

BT&Y spoke recently with Sue Atkins, a parenting expert about the costs that are incurred when having children and what we can do to try and save a few pennies.

029 2061 0987

BT&Y: How can new Mums save money? The best thing to do is to sit down with a cup of coffee and write down a list of the items you think you really need to start with - that way you will be less likely to impulse buy.

fit bump leaflet.indd 1

28/06/2013 10:57

BT&Y: Why do you think that a lot of money is wasted? It’s only natural for parents to get excited and want to buy the very best for their baby, however, this can often lead to parents going out and buying more than they need, purchasing impulse items that they later may not even use.

BT&Y: Do you think baby showers are a good idea or an over extravagance? Who doesn’t want to celebrate the birth or impending birth of a new baby? I think having close friends and family giving new parents presents is a wonderful idea and can really help take some of the stress off new parents. Amazon’s new Baby Wishlist is a great idea for baby showers, because people can buy you gifts that they know you need, avoiding a situation where you can end up with duplicated items, or things that you won’t use. Encouraging friends or family to buy gift certificates can also really help when buying big ticket items like prams and cots, as spending money on these types of things often cause the most worry for parents when planning for a new baby. BT&Y: So what do babies really need? Things you definitely need: Cot (plus mattress, sheets and blankets) Car seat Pram/buggy/travel system Six sleepsuits/ long sleeved suits Six vests/ short sleeved suits Two cardigans/ jackets Changing mat Nappies Bottles/teats/bottle brush (only needed if not breastfeeding) Nursing bra and breast pads Loads of bibs Plenty of towels/ flannels/ muslin squares (for bathing and dribbles!)

Things that are handy: Moses basket/ crib (plus mattress, sheets and blankets) Baby bath Baby box or bag Sling Bouncy chair Baby monitor Changing bag Steam steriliser Breast pump Baby lotion Baby wipes Bath thermometer Nail scissors Nappy wrapper

Loads of kitchen roll and cotton wool pads Brush and comb BT&Y: Is it best to wait till your newborn arrives or buy in advance? It’s a balance really - I went out and bought lots of cute baby gro’s only to discover my son arrived 2 weeks early and was much smaller than I had anticipated! I then had to rush out and buy lots more in smaller sizes, so my advice would be to buy some basics and wait and see. BT&Y: If you could buy a gift for the new royal prince what would it be and why? I’d buy a Silver Tooth Fairy box as a treasure for when the baby is older - lots of people will buy all the usual gifts but I think keeping a memory box of special things is really important to celebrate the happy memories and milestones of childhood. BT&Y: Any tips for those with twins or more when it comes to saving? Do you need two of everything?

10 - BabyToddler&You -

Having twins doesn’t necessarily mean having two of everything. The basics like onesies, blankets, sleepers and nappies will need to be bought in slightly larger quantities than if you were having one child. Some of these items, however, can do double duty. For onesies, blankets and sleepers try to stay away from pink and blue if you are having twins. By purchasing neutral colours, your twins will be able to share these items and your purse won’t feel as much of a crunch. One nappy bag is enough, but make sure it’s big enough to hold double the nappies and other supplies. The cot can double up to start with, but as the twins grow you will find that they will need their own space. One thing I do suggest is to invest in a tandem (front and back) style stroller, rather than a side by side as in my experience of speaking to parents with twins, trying to go through shops doors with a side by side can be stressful! BT&Y: What are the most extreme items that parents have bought for their children that you have heard of? I came across a parent who bought their child a quad bike for his birthday, I did think that was a little extreme! BT&Y: Parents often worry that they don’t have the most up to date and/or expensive toys and clothes and constant comparison to peers can often lead to unnecessary purchases or unhappy children. Have you any words of advice? The best advice I can give is to focus on the love and time you spend bonding with your baby, not worrying about all the material things. Cuddle, hug and talk to your baby, after all, they don’t care whether they are wearing designer clothes so why should you.

Thanks Sue

Clubs & Classes

Rainbow Club Rainbow babies is a special and very unique kind of mother and baby group. All the parents who come along to this group are sadly connected by the death of a previous child. It has helped me enormously to have the support and understanding of the Rainbow babies group while I navigate raising my son while grieving for my daughter. Unlike other groups I’ve attended with my rainbow son, here there are no questions with awkward answers. No-one asks if this baby is their first, or only child because by default, just by attending this group, we know there is at least one other child. No-one feels awkward about how to answer these questions here, because Rainbow Babies is one place where we can openly talk about all our children without fear of making anyone else feel uncomfortable. Here all our children are equal and acknowledged and that is something very special for a bereaved parent. Caroline Morgan, Mum to angel Belle, rainbow Xander and another on the way!

A confident child means a happy and successful child. Finding self belief and confidence at a young age can help them achieve goals and retain a positive mental attitude as they face life’s challenges. Drama and the performing arts can develop confidence from a young age. Children as young as three can benefit from a drama class. Warming up your voice and body, playing drama games, sharing stories and taking turns at being an audience are all ways in which a group bonds, and fosters an equality. In this feeling of safety the individual can make mistakes and try new things. Some of the benefits from starting drama at a young age are:

Finding your voice In a safe environment young ones can use their voices in a variety of ways to test how it sounds and the control they have over it.

Increase co-ordination Children learn how they can control their body and how much flexibility they have by dancing and miming activities in drama games.

Use your imagination Using puppets in class gives a child the opportunity to speak out loud thoughts and ideas they may be nervous about saying themselves. Role play is a chance to play out situations that may remain unresolved from school or home.

Trust yourself If a teacher can entrust a child to be leader for a game or take their turn in the circle telling a story then that child will learn to trust themselves. “Wow if teacher trusts me to lead this maybe I’m ok at it”

Self belief Confidence comes from believing in your skills. Performing in class or on stage gets a reaction you see straight away in the audience.

Encouragement Drama gives endless encouragement. An audience of peers listen and cheer when a child acts out a story and then the ritual of taking a bow is the performer accepting the praise for the work they have done. All this can lead to a happy confident child that will embrace all of life’s twists and turns. Big Talent hold regular drama classes in Penarth and Cardiff Bay. Little Big Talent specialises in classes for under 7s with performance opportunities throughout the year. To find out more contact The Big Talent School and Agency on 029 20464506 or visit www.thebigtalent.co.uk

Cylch and Ti a Fi offer an important first step for young children and parents when considering this. The Cylch offer a fantastic opportunity for very young children to be exposed to welsh in a fun and friendly environment before school, giving them a head start. “I certainly didn’t know about Cylch or Ti a Fi sessions until my son was 2 and I looked into a play group place for him while I was on maternity leave, I wish I had found out about it sooner! As a non-welsh speaking mother I was daunted to access the welsh parent groups. Cylch Ty’r Cymry were excellent in giving my son the basics to build on before school, also gave us a welcoming environment to be able to access the language. Health

Have you got a well adjusted baby?

Lets get ‘back’ to the basics...

by Michelle Bushell

Michelle Bushell is a Chiropractor based in Whitchurch Cardiff, with a special interest in pregnancy and paediatric care. Here she discusses how Chiropractic may help and can often be a solution for those more testing times of parenting. When I tell people I have a special interest in working with babies and children, it is often met with a puzzled look and a surprised tone, “How can a baby have a bad back?!” they say, “quite easily” I reply. Let’s have a think about this shall we....lets first of all think about pregnancy...nine months of development in a pretty small area. How would we feel as adult’s being curled up in a ball in a large suitcase for

ments may also cause cranial distortions. These distortions can then interrupt the flow of good messages from the brain to the rest of the body, and can decrease the natural flow of the fluid which surrounds the brain and spinal cord and plays an important role in

several months? Pretty stiff and sore afterwards?! Its very likely. Then to add insult to injury, the poor things are forced out head first through a narrow tunnel. If they have trouble doing that then they’re assisted by big metal tongs (forceps) or a sink plunger (ventouse). Not the greatest welcome in to the world really is it?! This kind of explanation usually soon changes that puzzled look I was greeted with to one of concern and empathy! So why could this be significant for the more testing times of parenting?...Let’s have a little anatomy lesson first. We all know that the brain sits in the cranium (skull) and the brain controls everything our body does. In order to get its messages around the body, the brain uses the spinal cord. This sits in the spine and sends out lots of nerves between each vertebrae of the spine, which run to the rest of the body to get those good messages around. In order for our bodies to work effectively, the cranium and spine must be in good condition, not twisted, not squashed, but nice and mobile and free. Unfortunately in babies this isn’t always the

18 - BabyToddler&You -

case. The journey through the birth canal places external forces on the baby’s cranium, which is designed to move and ‘squash’ to some degree in order for the labour process to occur. This is usually naturally corrected once the baby is a few hours old. However, factors such as the mother’s position during labour for example, or the baby presenting ‘back-back” can place further unnecessary stresses on the cranium and spine. The use of forceps and ventouse instru-

the nervous system and the healthy functioning of the whole body. Now as we all know, babies cannot communicate to us with speech, so there are a number of signs and symptoms that I’m sure many of you can relate to that maybe due to ‘stresses and strains’ on the immature spine and nervous system. Thorough observation of the baby along with consultation with the parents and physical examination all helps me build my case and

usually get to the bottom of what I think could be causing a problem. For those of you who have seen chiropractors yourself, or heard of the treatment techniques, then panic not! The techniques we use on babies are very gentle and very different to those used on adults! I always explain to parents before treating their precious bundle that the strongest pressure I will use on a baby is the same as the pressure I would use to touch my eyeball! Chiropractors use a variety of cranial techniques and spinal mobilisations as well as gentle soft tissue techniques. I also often give special exercises that Mummy and Daddy can do with baby at home. Many babies find the treatment extremely relaxing and many have been known to fall asleep in my arms during the process. Whilst Chiropractic doesn’t solve all problems, it does provide you as parents and expectant parents with another possible option….an option which doesn’t seem to be very widely known about when it comes to healthcare for children. Many people suffer with unhappy babies for a long time

before visiting a chiropractor as their last resort only to then find that’s what helped their baby’s problem. So next time you’re having one of those days and wondering what’s wrong, then stop! Perhaps all baby needs is a little helping hand. If you are unsure we can help you, please call the clinic to ask or you are welcome to book in at the clinic to discuss any questions free of charge. “I was not met with love, or joy, just nothing... empty” Rachael Dobson tells her story about suffering with PND (Post Natal Depression), the ups and downs and why she started PANDAS. I found out I was pregnant two days after my first wedding anniversary, and I was not met with the overwhelming joy which I thought was meant to happen. I was met with panic, shock and I was scared. I just held on to the fact people would tell me it will be lovely to hold the ‘bundle of joy’ and I will be met with love I have never felt before. My birth wasn’t exactly plain sailing, emergency caesarean and feeling as if I was being attacked followed by a blood transfusion. Sat in a side room on my own, looking over into a cot, I was not met with love, or joy, just nothing... Empty. More and more people came to see me and my sister said I must be so proud. Everyone was telling me how I should be feeling and all I wanted was to just go back in time to just me and my husband. I knew this was selfish, but I wanted do what other people my age did. I blamed this little vulnerable child for taking this away from me. The first few weeks I would cry when my husband walked through the door. This wasn’t what motherhood was meant to be, the tears, the tantrums, and the anger. One day there was an issue and my son wouldn’t stop crying, I was overwhelmed with tremendous anger and I was then met with sadness and horror. I wanted him gone. How could I feel like this towards a baby?

24 - BabyToddler&You -

I rang my health visitor and as soon as I heard her name, I promptly burst into tears.

Feature bring other people down. I genuinely felt like I had been slapped in the face. I was now able to look after our son the odd day on my own but it was tough. I’ll admit that one day I just lost it. I snapped. Our son would not let me put his trousers on and I know it sounds silly but to me was a big deal. The anger came back, the annoyance, the hatred, and I held him

I literally spent three and half hours crying my heart out, the pain, emotion, and heartache. I could finally tell someone. Sarah was shocked as she thought I was such a laid back first time mum. It was easy for me to just smile and put a mask on.

PANDAS Foundation now has 24 support groups across the U.K, a national Help Line, email support, an online community, publications and a website.

After telling them how I felt, I went into a shell. I didn’t want to do anything with my son. My GP signed my husband off work so he could care for my son. I had a CPN (Community Psychiatric Nurse – Mental Health) come to visit me. I tried to explain that when I get really angry I will pull my hair and pinch my arms and legs and will throw a tantrum like a child but also that I feel detached from it, like I am looking at myself. She questioned whether I heard voices and seemed to suggest I might be suffering from a psychotic disorder, which scared me. I had never heard voices and just wanted her advice on how to get better. I decided to go back to work as a temp after 3 months, and people would say to me, don’t you want to be at home with your son. It’s like I was met by the stereotype of what a good mum was. I just wanted to scream at them. I didn’t want to be at home, I wanted to be out of the house! I wanted to say that I am Rachael and I am not just a mum. In August 2010, I met with my new health visitor and I requested to go to a group for Post Natal Depression. I was advised there was a group but I was two pegs above it and would

Now I want to be able to do that for others. I just want people to know that sufferers are not alone. Although each person is different and has a different story to tell, I want to tell people that depression of any kind is an illness. I hope admitting all of this can be a help to just one person or family. This is why along with my husband Stuart, we set up PANDAS Foundation (Pre and Postnatal Depression Advice and Support) to help others so please don’t sit alone, stand together and be supported.

down, hard. He cried. There was no mark on him but I held him tight and balled my eyes out.

‘I’m so sorry Mummy let you down.’ I never told anyone at that time… not even my husband. A week later I told my Sure Start support worker. I then had social services at my door, telling me I was a serious risk to our son and that I wasn’t allowed to spend any time alone with him. I felt like I had let everyone down. It took four and a half months to get Social Services to believe I was not going to harm our son. I was so desperate to meet other people who went through the same. I searched on the Internet and when people on social networking sites replied saying that they felt the same and would describe what it’s like, I cried. It felt so good to hear other people say they felt the same and that it gets better.

However, my mood had plateaued; I still had bouts of dizziness, anxiety and some sensory disturbances. The trauma of the depression and its effect on my confidence had left a deep mark. The PANDAS support group proved vital to my full recovery. Meeting with other sufferers was cathartic, because we were able to discuss worries and symptoms constructively in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. We shared tips about things that had helped us get better, such as, exercise, relaxation and complimentary therapies. Understanding the way others were feeling allowed me to perceive the depression as an illness and not a sign of weakness or something self-inflicted. The facilitators of the PANDAS support group were empathetic and calm, providinga great climate for optimum healing.” ANON, Cardiff

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Celebrating your child’s Birthday is such a special moment in the year. Every parent wants their child to have a great time. For some, hosting the event of the year comes naturally however for others it can be quite a stressful time. Just remember there is no need to go over the top as I can guarantee that they won’t appreciate all the effort that is put in! I thought I would pass on a 15 tips to first timers or to those who maybe reluctant to share their house with 20 screaming babies and toddlers!

1

Expectations - My first advice is just don’t be too ambitious. Babies don’t know what is even happening and toddlers are just going to be akward whatever you decide to do! Young children can get very emotional on their birthdays and sugar fuelled children can play havoc with even the best laid party plans.

Numbers- It can sometimes all get a bit too much so keep numbers to a minimum and make sure that you give your child lots of attention. Presents - Expect the wrapping paper to be more interesting than the present itself. Pace present opening and leave some for a few days after. Hint: clothes never go down to well with 3+yrs. Party Games - 0-4yr olds will struggle to play any party games and if they do, expect tears and tantrums. Make sure if you play pass the parcel to have a small gift for everone in each layer (chocolate buttons are a good prize). Timing - Make sure you hold the party when your child is not suppposed to have a nap and find out when the invitees are due naps as well to avoid crying. Decorations - You can decorate the house or venue with so many things and party companies such as www.partydelights.co.uk can send you the whole lot, which is great. However, you will find that this matters more to parents than the children! Avoid balloons. Food - Simple finger food and juice. There is no need for lots. The little ones won’t eat much and as soon as they hit 3, the sweets and chocolate become far

more appealing. Don’t forget the adults especially if the party is over lunchtime! A few nibbles wouldn’t go a miss, maybe a few slices of pizza!

8

9

Cake - Up until the age of 3 children will not really mind what a cake looks like, so don’t go overboard. The local supermarkets do brill cakes or even make your own! Entertainment - there are some great classes which hold parties. Your children may be more confortable with a teacher that they already know.

W derful n o W is The al Min Music mmy(Party u with M ) Music Fizzz Tots Disco or y ens Baby S c y Musi Monke

10

Party bags - sometimes a book or a small soft toy would be more appropriate. The 2+ love chocolate and sweets though.

11

Venue - Whilst your child is young, perhaps have the party in the house or at a venue that she is familiar with to avoid the child being clingy. Keep the party length to a minimum.

12

Safety - If you are having the party at home, don’t forget to put your best china ornaments away and take objects off the floor. Make sure stair gates are up.

13

Pets - Keep your pets out of the way. Your children maybe happy with four legged friends but some may not.

14

Photos - Don’t forget to get a friend or family member to take photos. Or alternatively you could try a cake smash at your local photographer.

And...most of all enjoy! Children grow up so quickly and before you know it they will just want to celebrate going to the cinema with their friends!

Flexible Working

Know your rights by Emma Del Torto

Thinking of returning to work or making a request to work part-time under the Flexible Working Regulations 2013? Parenthood undoubtedly provides us with a really rewarding job. I think it also provides us with the toughest challenges and requires us to make tough choices along the way. Our work life and home life are often in conflict, leaving mummy (and daddy) pulled in different directions. Whatever choices you have to make as a parent – whether to return to work or take a longer career break or which child care options

you go for – it is important to consider which options are right for you and your family. Statistically women are still the ones taking extended time off, using the maternity leave entitlement and also making use of flexible working policies to return to work part time (if that is a viable option for your employer). More often than not going back to work after having children is not optional – it is quite often a financial necessity. This presents us with the tough choice of

choosing between childcare options. The right to request flexible working has been part of UK employment legislation for 10 years now. When the Flexible Working Regulations came into force in 2003 they did so with a lot of negativity surrounding its uselessness and ‘lack of teeth’. Essentially, they really are a fairly limited set of regulations that employers have been able to dodge. A year after they came into force statistics showed that only 10% of applications for flexible working were made by men. No real surprise there for all of us working mums. So flexible working became yet another women’s issue. Ten years on and I do think that there have been some significant changes to attitudes and a considerable shift in favour of greater flexibility. There have been incremental expansions to eligibility for the right to request flexible working (to include carers for example). I don’t really think that the regulations have been the cause of this change of attitude, although they may have paved the way for change. Anecdotally, changes to ICT and the global recession, have assisted our ability (and a necessity) to work more flexibly. Some tips when considering your options: Don’t be afraid to communicate with your employer whilst on maternity leave. Consider all your options – do some investigation into various flexible working patterns.

Where do our local Mums go?

Raw Deal for Children in UK Restaurants Britain’s leading restaurants and pubs are giving children across the UK a raw deal with children’s menus dominated by the usual suspects, like nuggets, burgers and sausages, few fruit or vegetables, and not even the provision of children’s cutlery.

have come out on top of the league table, while Burger King, KFC and Prezzo scored the least points. Although average meal price varied from restaurant to restaurant, this did not determine where chains came in the rankings.

Out to Lunch is calling for the restaurant industry to improve standards and make changes to their children’s menus. The investigation shows 66% of parents think the food provision for children in restaurants is not good enough. 21 popular high street restaurants and pubs were surveyed looking at what’s on the menu for children over a three month period, revealing that: 12 out of the 21 restaurants and pubs have children’s menus dominated by nuggets, burgers and sausages

Joanna Lewis, Head of Policy at the Soil Association comments: “Our investigation reveals that most high street restaurants are not even meeting the most basic standards families should expect when they eat out. Most are still churning out children’s menus dominated by the usual suspects – burgers, nuggets and pizzas –turning the table into a battlefield for any parents wanting their child to eat well. With 1 in 3 children now overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school, it’s time for these popular chains to use their influence in a positive way.”

Out to Lunch league table exposes the truth about 21 chain restaurants and pubs children’s menus. Jamie’s Italian, Wagamama and Wetherspoons

“Restaurants need to raise the bar and listen to parents who are saying they want fresh food not ready meals for their children, and the same kind of variety you’d expect as an adult. In the wake of horsegate, it also rings alarm bells that only one restaurant knows where its meat comes from.” The Out to Lunch campaign is calling on all high street restaurants and pubs to: 1. Offer all young diners the choice of a children’s portion of adult meals 2. Serve freshly prepared food, not ready meals 3. Offer free water to families on arrival. 4. Make breastfeeding mums feel welcome Here are some key findings: Almost half of restaurants do not offer vegetables or salad with a majority of their children’s main meals. Eight out of 21 chains don’t include vegeta-

Of the 11, only 4 were making and cooking the majority of their children’s food in the kitchen: Jamie’s Italian, Wagamama, Carluccios and Café Rouge. Post horsegate, only one chain could reliably tell parents where their meat comes from. Only 1 offers children’s cutlery as standard. No restaurants have signage welcoming breastfeeding on their premises. Only 2 chains offer a children’s drinks menu free from sweeteners. Anna Rosier, Managing Director at Organix says: “Four out of 10 parents told us they eat out once a fortnight or more with their families. If restaurants and pubs want to ensure business stays strong and see customers return, they need to start improving what they’re serving to children. “We want families – parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles – to help get behind our campaign to see change. Restaurants will only start improving if we start being more vocal about what we’re seeing and vote with our feet.” menu, and I truly believe that we have a brilliant offering that both kids love and parents can trust. www.soilassociation.org/outtolunch.
