Once upon a New York street a man bellowed out from atop an upside-down milk crate. He couldn’t have been much older than twenty-five, with the glint of youth in his dark eyes, yet his voice carried with the authority and assuredness of a powerful leader. This man was Phineas Taylor Barnum, and already he was becoming a household name in New York City as an expert showman, sly businessman, and natural entertainer. P.T. Barnum was nothing if not a promoter. He possessed the ability to exaggerate the truth for the sake of entertaining a crowd. He was infamous for his moral flexibility, often promoting hoaxes that were nothing more than common trinkets as though they were as rare and valuable as solid gold. His very first entrepreneurial endeavor was the purchase of one museum which Barnum renamed Barnum’s Grand Scientific and Musical Theatre. He then quickly

attracted throngs of crowds with promises of greatness. His museum-show hybrid boasted authentic mermaid specimens, the greatest performing midgets the world had ever seen, and many kinds of ferocious man-eating animals. Barnum’s American Museum was so popular that people would spend the entire day there. This would have cut into profits, as the museum would be too full to squeeze another person in. In classic Barnum style, Phineas put up signs that said “This Way to the Egress.” Many customers followed the signs, not realizing that Egress was a fancy word for ‘exit.’ They kept on looking for this strange new attraction, the ‘egress.’ Many patrons followed the signs right out the door. Once they had exited the building, the door would lock behind them, and if they wanted to get back in, they had to pay another admission charge. Barnum was a crafty promoter.

Phineas Taylor Barnum was born in small Bethel, Connecticut. As the son of a store and innkeeper, Barnum had to quickly learn the art of making a sale while working in his father’s businesses.

Barnum sold his family store and moved to New York City where he began his career as a showman by opening his very first live museum and full act: Barnum’s Grand Scientific and Musical Theatre.

Barnum introduces the first major hoax at his museum, the Feejee Mermaid, which he created by attaching the skull of a monkey to a mummified fish tail. He would later recruit acts including an obese child to pose as a “baby giant.” Barnum once explained it: “I don’t believe in duping the public, but I believe in first attracting and then pleasing them.”

Barnum discovered his first major singing act, the one Swedish Nightingale Jenny Lind, while traveling Europe. Thanks to Barnum’s savvy eye for talent and skill for promotion, Lind’s tour of America was a soaring success.

Barnum used his masterful skills of promotion to revive the then struggling theatre culture in the United States, create America’s first aquarium, run the first successful large-scale lottery, and oversee countless popular beauty contests including the ever-popular fattest baby competition.

At the age of 61, after forty years of experience in the promotion industry, Barnum shifted to the circus business and opened P.T. Barnum’s Traveling World’s Fair, Great Roman Hippodrome and Greatest Show on Earth.

Barnum published his third book, The Art of Getting Money, in which he outlined his exceedingly successful methods of entertainment promotion and monetization.

Joining forces with wealthy businessman James Bailey, Barnum & Bailey’s Circus extended to three full rings of action and began traveling the rails to perform in cities all across the country. It included breakthrough acts like the very first elephant to be seen in America, named Jumbo.

He explained that, “It is necessary always to put on the appearance of business in order that the reality should follow... Persons catering for the public amusement must dash ahead and damn the expense.”

Barnum died in his sleep at home on April 7, 1891 and was buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, Connecticut, a cemetery he designed. Weeks before his death, Barnum gave the Evening Sun permission to print his own self-written obituary— even in his passing he wished to make sure the event was promoted in the correct way.

Upon his death, Barnum was hailed as an icon of American spirit and ingenuity, and was perhaps the most famous man in the world at that time.

Upon his passing, Barnum’s circus spectacular was sold to John Ringling (pictured above) and the up and coming Ringling Brothers Circus, but the two acts continued to tour separately under their original names and management.

Due to harsh wartime conditions that included labor shortages and rail travel problems, the two circuses were merged to form the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey’s Circus: The Greatest Show on Earth. Their first performance took place in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Times, and the public’s taste, were changing, and the circus had problems keeping pace. On July 16, 1956, the financially troubled Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey gave its last performance under the big top. LIFE magazine wrote that, “a magical era had passed forever.”

In the decades to come, many attempts are made to capture the spirit of Barnum’s original circus and regain the amazement of audiences across the nation. Some tickets were sold, and acts were watched, but the wonder and magic of the original Phineas Taylor Barnum seems to have wained.

NEW LOGO / In creating Barnum’s new logo, we wanted to embrace P. T. Barnum’s original vision of being the ultimate promoter. However, we also wanted to update the logo and move beyond the bold circus aesthetic of Barnum & Bailey’s early letterpress printed materials, and towards a look for the modern era. We created the new logo to invoke a sense of mystery and intrigue, as any good image consultant business should do. The aesthetic draws from the concept of smoke and mirrors, for successful promotion reveals the best elements while masking the less desirable. The smoke and mirrors motif also offers a nod to Barnum’s career as a circus promoter, therefore maintaining a solid connection to Barnum’s rich past.

Top Right: Our bespoke logo was precisely crafted using a custom grid of equidistant 75 degree lines. This angle was also pulled from the logo design and leveraged as a graphic element to help create a coherent overall Barnum style. Bottom Right: Our logo has a delicate disposition, so it appreciates a little bit of space to breathe between itself and any other text or imagery. As such, its necessary to leave at least the distance equivalent to the height of the logo (referred to as ‘x’ in diagram) along both the top, bottom, left, and right sides of the logo. Idlewild lives somewhere between engineering and design- it is a uniquely industrious typeface, combining space-age optimism with the confidence and composure of a master craftsman. Leveraging the lighter weights, namely the thin for dark type on white backgrounds and the light when reversed out of black, will set the correct tone of authority, innovation, and attention to detail which Barnum maintains across its endeavors.

All body text is to be set in Joanna. Joanna is a typeface which plays nicely with our didonesque logo by mirroring its 20th century modernist tendencies: high thick-to-thin contrast and sharp squared serifs. Joanna also provides necessary contrast with the wide geometric nature and uniform stroke weight of Idlewild. Joanna was designed by Eric Gill in 1930 and named after his daughter and described it himself “a book face free from all fancy business.”

All numbers not contained in the body copy are to be set in Claimcheck. Claimcheck, as its name implies, is modeled after the numbers on claim stubs used by dry cleaners, parking garages, and checkrooms the world over. In the days before digital typography, claimchecks and other ephemera were printed by automatic numbering machines, whose rotating cylinders bore equal-width numbers of an unadorned but memorable style, and Claimcheck’s design recalls that frank but colorful vernacular of ephemeral printing.

1: THE INWARD SELF/ The left side of the divide encompasses all of the clients inward self and personal body. The closer to the mirror is the more tangible corporeal division, dealing with issues of the body itself, such as improved physique. On the second tier out, our cerebral division works to perfect the inner thoughts, through techniques such as life coaching.
