THE HOT SEATS Regular festival headliners The Hot Seats play string band music with simple intentions: to keep the role of traditional musician as entertainer and commentator alive and kicking. Racing onto the scene at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival, their sell out run at the famous Spiegeltent won them the coveted Herald Angel award for their outstanding contribution. With guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and bass, their material is simultaneously hard to classify and instantly identifiable combining the virtuosic soloing and tightness of bluegrass, the band-driven rhythm of old time, the jerky bounce of ragtime, and the swagger of good old rock and roll. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking initiative broadcasting the best of British theatre to cinemas around the world live, via satellite. It has been a huge hit in the UK and will now be a regular feature from September 2016 at Otley Courthouse.

NEW! NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE The Deep Blue Sea Helen McCrory (Medea and The Last of the Haussmans at the National Theatre, Penny Dreadful, Peaky Blinders) returns to the National Theatre in Terence Rattigan’s devastating masterpiece, playing one of the greatest female roles in contemporary drama. Tom Burke (War and Peace, The Musketeers) also features in Carrie Cracknell’s critically acclaimed new production. A flat in Ladbroke Grove, West London. 1952. When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge. With it comes a portrait of need, loneliness and long-repressed passion. Behind the fragile veneer of post-war civility burns a brutal sense of loss and longing. See our website for details for the latest productions and also sign up to our mailing list for the latest schedule information.

TEN STRINGS AND A GOAT SKIN Young acoustic power trio Ten Strings and a Goat Skin are from Canada’s Prince Edward Isle. Expanding on the Scottish and Acadian roots of PEI’s traditional music, this young up and coming band weave old-school Franco-Canadian, Breton, Irish, and Scottish tunes with wickedly current grooves. Working closely with producer Leonard Podolak of Grammy and Juno-winning eclectic roots favourites The Duhks, Ten Strings and a Goat Skin push their music into new territory, adding pump organ, clever effects and taut vocal harmonies, for a rich sound with a direct, funky edge. Don’t miss the chance to see this highly talented trio, on one of their few UK dates before they head back to their homeland.

Talk

Come and join us throughout the day for guided tours of Otley Courthouse. Find out about its history and how it has evolved since Victorian times. The Courthouse timeline in the cell corridor sets out the history of Otley Courthouse in context with local and national events. New for this year! Lots of information and activities about apples and pears (the Courthouse was built on the site of orchards) for young and old.

ideas in 10–15 minutes and 20 slides. Then it is over to you to ask the questions. Watch the website for new speakers. All welcome, whether you are a beginner, an expert or still at school.

THE 56 “Nobody dies at football matches in fires. It doesn’t happen”. At 3.40pm on May 11th 1985, a small fire broke out in the main stand at Valley Parade football ground during the final match of the season. Within four minutes the wooden structure was ablaze. Fifty-four Bradford City supporters and two Lincoln City supporters lost their lives. This unique theatrical experience provides a truthful retelling of stories of those involved in the Bradford City Fire. Adapted solely from real-life testimonies and interviews with witnesses, this piece of documentary theatre examines the themes of solidarity, strength and community in the face of overwhelming tragedy.

Otley Courthouse is excited to be a part of this year’s Otley Folk Festival sponsored by Black Sheep, in this its 25th anniversary year. The Courthouse will be hosting a number of events across the festival with real ale and food stalls also available.

LUCY WARD

Captured by the lyrics and stories of traditional song Lucy delved into the world of folk music, visiting clubs and sessions up and down the country before playing gigs in her own right. She won the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. In 2013 she was nominated for the acclaimed “Folk Singer of the Year” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, making Lucy one of the youngest people ever to be nominated for this most prestigious award. She now returns with her 3rd album I Dreamt I Was a Bird, for a gig that promises to be a great way to kick off the folk festival weekend!

FAMILY CEILIDH Come and join us for our annual ceilidh which this year is being hosted by South Yorkshire trio “The Rhythm Chaps”. Expect to be dancing to music that is both original and traditional on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar and keyboards, all with a driving rhythm and enthusiasm that makes it hard to stay in your seat. All tickets for these events can be bought from either the Otley Courthouse box office, or the Otley Folk Festival website.

AN EVENING WITH THE TWANGLES & LES BARKER Les Barker is an English poet. He is best known for his comedic poetry and parodies of popular songs, but he has also produced some very serious thought-provoking written work. Initially he toured around folk music venues as a solo performer, and later with The Mrs Ackroyd Band (named after his mongrel dog Mrs Ackroyd). Supported by local group and Korks regulars “The Twangles” Kevin Loughran, David Bowie Jr and Phil Snell will provide the music.

PEGGY SEEGER WITH SAM GLEAVES

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE The Threepenny Opera A darkly comic new take on Brecht and Weill’s raucous musical broadcast live from the stage of the National Theatre. London scrubs up for the coronation. The thieves are on the make, the whores on the pull, the police cutting deals to keep it all out of sight. Mr and Mrs Peachum are looking forward to a bumper day in the beggary business, but their daughter didn’t come home last night and it’s all about to kick off… With Olivier Award-winner Rory Kinnear (Hamlet, James Bond) as Macheath, alongside Rosalie Craig (As You Like It, My Family and other Animals) as Polly Peachum and Haydn Gwynne (The Windsors, Drop the Dead Donkey) as Mrs Peachum. This bold, anarchic production is adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Rufus Norris. Contains scenes of a sexual nature, violence and filthy language.

EVERY BRILLIANT THING “You’re six years old. Mums in hospital. Dad says she’s done something stupid. She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world: 1. Ice Cream, 2. Kung Fu movies, 3. Burning Things, 4. Laughing so hard you shoot milk from your nose, 5. Construction cranes, 6. Me You leave it on her pillow. You know she’s read it because she’s corrected your spelling. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own.” Starring Jonny Donahoe, a British comedian, writer and performer, he is best known for his comedy band Jonny and the Baptists who have made regular appearances on BBC Radio 4. In 2014/15 Jonny was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show.

Music

Peggy Seeger is one of folk music’s greatest innovators. Known as the “Queen” of folk, she has won the Women in Music Award (inspirational artist) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the prestigious North America Folk Alliance. The daughter of American composer Ruth Crawford Seeger, half sister of protest singer Pete Seeger, wife of the legendary Ewan MacColl, mother of record producers Calum and Neill MacColl and grandmother of Bombay Bicycle Club’s Jamie MacColl, Peggy is one of the central pioneers of the 60s folk revival in Britain. A singer of traditional Anglo-American songs, she plays six instruments: piano, guitar, 5-string banjo, Appalachian dulcimer, autoharp and English concertina. Her new album “Everything Changes” received great critical acclaim. A genuine “Icon” in an age where the term is often overused do not miss this chance to see Peggy perform live.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS James Hornsby is a veteran of well over one-hundred theatrical performances. In a career spanning thirty-five years he has worked with some of the country’s leading playwrights including Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Dame Kay Mellor, Richard Cameron and for many years with John Godber at the renowned Hull-Truck Theatre Company. After the success of last year’s sold-out performance of Bram Stokers Dracula, James is back and presents one of Charles Dickens’ best loved novels Great Expectations. Performed once again as a ‘one-man show’ this versatile actor will vividly portray a cast of wonderful characters including: Abel Magwitch, The Gargerys, Uncle Pumblechook, Estella, Herbert Pocket, Miss Havisham and of course …Pip. All brought to life in the ‘inimitable’ style of Dickens’ own legendary public readings.

WORDSFEST An exciting afternoon of fun workshops for young people who love writing – everything from graffiti, to writing for comics, short stories and song writing.

Tickets for all these events can be bought from Otley Courthouse or the Ilkley Literature Festival.

PAINTING THE MODERN GARDEN: MONET TO MATISSE

Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, featured in a recent innovative and extensive exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts, has now been filmed for the enjoyment of people outside London. Screened in collaboration with Wharfedale Gardeners Group, in celebration of their 70th anniversary.

STEVE HOWE For nearly 35 years, Steve Howe has been at the forefront of guitar playing in popular music as a lynchpin of multimillion selling prog rock icons Yes and supergroup Asia, amongst many other roles. Actually, simply referring to Howe as just a guitarist is limiting. In addition to being a songwriter, he plays more instruments than just the guitar. If it has strings and a fretboard, Howe has mastered it and recorded with it at some point on one of countless albums he’s been a part of. Howe played an integral role in shaping the sound of Yes and Asia, and has also enjoyed a long and profilic career as a solo artist with more than a dozen studio albums to his credit. The new addition to this amazing back catalogue is Homebrew 6 which as always is as critically acclaimed as the rest of Howes’ illustrious recording history.

KIKI DEE & CARMELO LUGGERI An Acoustic Journey For almost two decades, Kiki and Carmelo have been touring their spellbinding acoustic live show across the UK and Europe. Performing in this stripped back fashion allows each of their exceptional talents to shine through and create a wonderful and warm sense of intimacy for the audience. 2013 marked Kiki’s 50th year in the music industry and has cemented her status as one of the UK’s finest and most revered vocalists. To celebrate, the duo released their critically acclaimed album A Place Where I Can Go which features 11 new tracks including the haunting duet Horses with Scottish singer Eddi Reader. Join Kiki and Carmelo for an acoustic journey of stories and song which include unique covers of songs by artists such as Kate Bush and Frank Sinatra and of course Kiki’s own hits Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, I Got The Music In Me and the stunning Amoureuse.

Music

SALTFISHFORTY From their island home in Britain’s far north, Douglas Montgomery (fiddle, mandolin) and Brian Cromarty (vocal, guitar, banjo) have built a reputation that spreads far and wide, with appearances at many of the UK’s major folk festivals and the top Celtic festivals worldwide. Together, they brilliantly transcend the conventional confines of the duo format with their raw attack, playing traditional, contemporary and original material all developed in the buzzing music scene of Orkney. Although the music has a very definite celtic base, they boldly cross-fertilise it with American and European influences – Celtic folk has never sounded better than in the hands of Saltfishforty, as they head south of the border for a rare English appearance outside the festivals.

WHAT WE CANNOT KNOW WITH PROFESSOR MARCUS DU SAUTOY Are there limits to what we can discover about our physical universe? Are some regions of the future beyond the predictive powers of science and mathematics? Is the universe infinite? Are there ideas so complex that they are beyond the conception of our finite human brains? Can brains even investigate themselves or does the analysis enter an infinite loop from which it is impossible to rescue itself? Marcus du Sautoy takes us to the edge of knowledge to find out what we cannot know.

OTLEY SCIENCE FAIR Join local groups, regional museums and national organisations showing off the best of hands-on science in Yorkshire. SOUTHERN TENANT FOLK UNION

Music

Southern Tenant Folk Union are an Edinburgh based bluegrass band that over a series of albums have produced a thought provoking and arresting take on roots and folk music. Past winners of the ‘Americana Artist Of The Year’ award the band have taken their music onto BBC One’s prime political show The Andrew Marr Show plus Irish TV’s world famous chat show The Late Late Show as well as onto stages at prestigious festivals including Celtic Connections, Belfast Open House Festival, Orkney Folk Festival and many more.

After a massive 40 night tour of the UK in 2014, BRIT-Award winner Beverley Craven is back on the road performing a handful of select venues in 2016 as she continues to promote her acclaimed latest album Change of Heart. Beverley is looking forward to performing her new songs live alongside timeless classics Promise Me, Holding On, Woman To Woman, Love Scenes and many more. With a witty narrative and unforgettable melodies, her poignant sentiments will leave you with a warm glow of nostalgia, or maybe even the odd tear.

BOOKISH Tom Adams and Laura Mugridge are performers who have made a show about a book. Actually they made five. The best thing about this is that you can choose which ones you see! (have a look at our website for the choice). They’ve taken a fresh look at what those books inspire; so whichever book you choose you might get a quiz about cheese, a song about body language or even a confession on a ballroom dancing career. Bookish is a fun, witty, and entertaining evening inspired by books, filled with live music, laughter, words and maybe even a quiz..

Expect to hear some exciting new material performed by the collective alongside the best of their extensive back catalogue as they continue to tour with a thrilling live show that engages the audience, talks and tells stories, discusses issues, is informal and also one that displays the fully eclectic and interesting music from across the band’s career to date.

THE LEEDS & LIVERPOOL CANAL: CELEBRATING ITS 200TH ANNIVERSARY After 2 Acts of Parliament, six engineers, countless ‘navvies’, more than 90 locks, 220 bridges, 2 tunnels and 46 years of construction, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was finally completed on the 22nd October 1816. At 127 ¼ miles long it is the longest single canal in Britain and, when combined with the Aire and Calder Navigation, provided a connection from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Come and join Bill Froggatt, Heritage Advisor at Northwest Waterways, who looks at the history of the canal, considers why it was built and looks at some of the challenges that were overcome to build it.

40 years after he recorded his first album, Golden Vanity, in 1976, Martin is known as a guitarist of formidable talent. Equally at home playing English traditional folk, American folk and blues and his own compositions, he is consistently named as one of the very finest fingerstyle guitar players in the world. Whether interpreting material from tradition or singing his own potent self-penned songs, Simpson is a remarkable storyteller: captivating and profoundly moving. His own song writing produced the poignant Never Any Good, from Prodigal Son, 2007’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Album of the year. He has had the most nominations of any performer in the 15 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, an astonishing 31 times, 12 of those as Musician of the Year, winning that particular accolade twice. A virtuoso player without question, Martin Simpson conveys his diverse treasure trove of material from the heart, performing with rare subtlety, intensity and honesty.

AN EVENING WITH GERVASE PHINN Comedian, author, poet, broadcaster, lecturer, educational guru, after-dinner speaker and born raconteur – Gervase Phinn is perhaps best known for his best-selling series of five Dales books for Penguin. Affectionately dubbed ‘the James Herriot of Schools’, Gervase has written a wide range of academic books, children’s poetry and fiction and is a columnist on the Yorkshire Post and The Countryman. A natural storyteller, he combines the timing of the professional comedian with palpable warmth and the ability to deliver a message that is more than just a series of jokes. Phinn will have you on the edges of your seats, as he shares his hilarious and sometimes poignant tales of life as a schools inspector in the Yorkshire Dales.

Film

VERTIGO Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo has recently been voted into the top position of “the greatest film of all time” by the BFI’s magazine Sight and Sound panel, which meets once a decade. This has replaced Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane which held the spot for 50 years. It’s the story of retired cop (James Stewart) with a fear of heights, who is asked to investigate the strange activities of an old friend’s wife (Kim Novac), all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her … and most importantly, the film features a bell tower! The peal of eight bells of All Saints Parish Church have been ringing out since 1748. The bells are renowned for their beautiful sound, and are a part of the heritage of the town. They are now in need of considerable refurbishment if they are to continue ringing for celebrations such as weddings and funerals and special events like the Tour de France and Tour de Yorkshire. Presented by Otley Film Society with all profits in aid of the Parish Church bells.

The New Year Quiz returns to test your general knowledge. Have fun pitting your wits against Bob and Gill, our regular quiz inquisitors, and enjoy a fish n chip supper in the interval. You might even win a prize! To avoid disappointment book your table early. Max of 6 people per table. The bar will be open from 7pm.

John’s walking has taken him to many parts of the UK and abroad but he still reckons the Yorkshire Dales is one of the finest walking areas with its vast variety of scenery. In the past year alone, after the release of their most recent record, Ionia, they’ve been featured in the line-up of prestigious affairs such as The Shetland Island Folk Festival, the Stagecoach Music Festival in California, and the Bluegrass Jamboree all over Germany. Describing their music as eclectic Americana, there is something for everyone in the band’s exhilarating and passionate live performances with songs that range from bluesy works of wonder to blistering bluegrass beauty. When their album was released in the UK, reaction was instantaneous. “Fantastic” declared Marie Crichton as she played them on her BBC show.
