For middle distance runners running in events from Brooks Sprint PR 10.45 400m to 1600m, middle distance spikes offer more protection in the heel than sprint spikes. Middle distance spikes also work well for jumping events such as high jump and long jump as well as hurdles. For the athlete that may be in-between sprints and middistance events, mid-distance spikes work well for either event as they use similar spike plates. This year, The Running Spot features mid-distance spikes from Brooks, New Balance, Nike, and Saucony. Featured spikes include: • Brooks PR MD 46.61 for males and Brooks PR Brooks Sprint PR 11.35 MD 54.26 for females $64.99 • New Balance MD 500 $64.99 • Nike Zoom Rival MD $64.99 For the Elite mid-distance runner, we will have the Saucony Endorphin MD 4 $99.99 For the long distance runners running in events longer than 1600m, a long-distance spike will be the spike of choice. Long-distance spikes will offer the most cushion under the heel. These shoes will generally have fewer spikes than mid-distance or sprint spikes and will be more flexible.

This year, The Running Spot features distance spikes from Brooks, Nike, and Saucony. Featured spikes include: • Brooks PR LD 4:10 for males and Brooks PR LD 4:48 for females $64.99 • Nike Rival D 8 $64.99 • Saucony Velocity 5 $59.99

Food Resolutions By Riley Vollmer January is the one time of year when it is not completely insane to declare a total life revamp and resolve to make a change. It also is the one time of year when it is socially acceptable to pretend like you are going to become this new form of your old self. While I am 100 percent supportive of making positive resolutions and strides towards self-improvement, getting instant results usually doesn’t happen. You most likely aren’t going to go to the gym every day, or alter your entire diet just because it was time to pick out a new planner for the year. Resolutions come in all shapes and sizes. According to USA.gov, the two most popular New Year promises are to drink less alcohol and to eat healthier food. Everyone wants his or her body to look and feel good. We are bombarded with an outrageous amount of information about how Dr. Oz-like doctors think you should conquer the grocery store. Medical news prompts you to look for specific foods and reports how much you need in order to look presentable come swimsuit season. Portion control (its praises as worn out as your couch cushions) provides a valuable understanding of food, but does not account for the mental and emotional side of eating. Your relationship with food is possibly one of the most important aspects to achieving your New Year’s resolution and is also the most complicated. As you begin to make changes towards a new you for 2014, read more on how to revitalize your food mentality. A healthy mind is reflected in a healthy appearance.

From Chemo to 5k

After it was over, I felt very proud. My friend, Karla Tedford, said, “Now what are you going to do?” I said, “Wait for next summer.” She told me I needed to keep going and that I should do Bob Roncker’s Sit to Fit. Walking? Me? I needed a Lay to Sit class.

By Nancy Simpson

Editor Note – One of the beauties of our business is being able to share or experience some significant achievements of others. Here is a letter that I recently received from Nancy Simpson. It’s pretty amazing.

She said, “No! You can do this! I will sign you up, and pick you up, take you there and walk with you.” Well, who could say no to that?

Hi, I’m Nancy Simpson, one of your Sit to Fit-ers. I am 62-years-old and have Stage 4 leukemia. It is, at this point, considered incurable. I get chemo every 12 weeks, just to keep my bone marrow functioning enough to live, but it keeps coming back...more chemo. This has gone on for over a year...lots of chemo. Six-hour drips at Christ Hospital.

I was scared! It was a big deal for me to walk from the parking lot of Kroger into the store! But, I did it. At first, I was dead last coming back to the starting point. But, then after a couple of weeks, I was in with the last group! I was doing it! I was a walker!

I have no energy and mostly live in my bed. I am utterly grateful to be alive. Each day is pure magic to me. I wake up and think I have won the lottery just to be alive. Life is, moment by moment, a magical mystery tour. For me, no matter what it going on, good or bad, it is all holy and so wow! This summer, I decided I would get out of bed and do Yoga in the Park. There were hundreds of people and no one noticed me. It was so hard. I had to just sit for parts of it because I was too tired. But, as the weeks drifted on, I got better and I did some of the poses at home.

I am writing to tell you I completed the practice walk! I am writing to thank you for having Sit to Fit for people like me. I don’t lie in my bed all day. Now, I am able to be up and around much more. Thank you for not just focusing on fit runners, but including people such as myself in your vision of helping the community become more active -- no matter what their level of fitness. I love you! GIVE THE GIFT OF POSITIVE BODY IMAGE Lately, we have all been bombarded with social media stories about the extremes the media will go to alter images. Children today are inundated with digitally-altered photographs in magazines and other media outlets that present a warped standard. Seeing these images repeatedly may lead them to be critical of their own bodies. It is important for parents and other adults to counter these media messages, build healthy body perceptions for our youth and ward off destructive body image problems. Children - boys and girls - with negative body images may feel more self-conscious, anxious and isolated while those with positive images are more likely to feel comfortable and confident.

• Watch out for teasing/bullying related to body image • Myth bust the “perfect body” Other ideas: • Set a good example • Help children understand their bodies are changing and growing • Help children focus on abilities and personality (not physical appearance) • Team up with your family doctor • Encourage a positive school environment • Avoid food as rewards/punishments • Engage in physical activity as a family • Help establish healthy eating habits and make meal time positive • Celebrate your child’s unique qualities and praise achievements

According to WebMD the following are signs your child(ren) may have a negative body image: • Viewing self only by physical appearance • Language she/he uses to describe herself/himself • Excessive dieting • Frequent comments about others’ weight • Depression • Low self-esteem Instead of blaming the media, parents and other adults can use the media messages as a springboard for discussing healthy body images with their children. Call attention to images that are healthy and realistic as well as messages that are inaccurate and unhealthy. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggest these five ways to give your child the gift of positive body image: • Check your own body image issues • Focus on health...not weight • Find physical activities that fit your child’s interest/personality (sports, biking, yoga, martial arts, dance, running, etc.)

Taking steps early can prevent self-esteem issues and poor body image. Developing and maintaining a healthy body image isn’t easy for adults and can be even more challenging for our children! If you are concerned about your child’s weight or perception of his/her body, consult your pediatrician. While children can be inspired and affected by teachers, coaches and other adults, it is parents and caregivers who have the ultimate influence in their lives. Give your children the gift of positive body image. Empower them to elevate their critical thinking skills and reduce the impact of negative or unrealistic images on their self-esteem! Love and Muddy Water By Bob Roncker

Jeanne Koopman and Brad Young were married on September 14 after havingmet through the Running Spot Group. They made their first connection at the Mudathlon as members of the Running Spot team. Brad explained that an opportunity came up to run a unique race as a part of the running group, called the Mudathlon, which was a course staged with 40 military type obstacles through a muddy mess. About midway through the course he came across Jeanne who was slipping and sliding through the obstacles and cursing like a sailor. Her frustration make him chuckle and they began to laugh about it together. Soon they found themselves further separated from the larger group and going through the course side by side. They approached one of the last obstacles, which was a hill filled with slides that plunge the rider into a murky, muddy pond. They sped down the slides and splashed gleefully into the muck and stood there knee-deep in the brown water laughing at each other. As if on impulse, Jeanne reached back and drenched Brad with a full armload of muddy water. As he stood there dumfounded with mud-water dripping down his dome the following realization struck him… “Hey, I really like this girl!” They finished the course together and at the end he asked her if she knew the way to the Running Spot tent. At that point she hadn’t even realized he was a member of the running group. They had a good time talking and laughing at the tent and then they parted ways. It wasn’t what he would call a “date” but it was the spark that started the fire that still burns today. Congratulations Jeanne and Brad!

Are Ultra’s Healthy for You? By Marc Tiesmann “You ran HOW MANY miles??? Oh, that CAN’T be healthy for you!” If I had a nickel for how many times I hear this from someone, I wouldn’t have to work at the Running Spot anymore! But, the question does get me thinking. What does one actually gain from running these ultra-long distances? Depending upon to whom you talk, I’m sure you will get many different reasons. Research shows………. THAT I DON’T CARE WHAT IT SHOWS! I believe the best type of research is done by getting out there and experiencing it yourself! I can only speak for me, but I’m almost certain a majority of Ultra runners don’t run these distances because it’s healthy. Actually, I’m pretty sure that it’s unhealthy to run so long because of what it does to our bodies in a physical sense. Sure, there are plenty of research studies that claim Ultras will make you live longer than normal distance runners. But, there also are studies that claim Ultras are not good for your heart and body. Every month, there seems to be new research that shows one or the other. As a beginner Ultra runner, I read all of these articles and took them to heart. But now, I’m learning to say to heck with them! I’m doing it because I LIKE doing it! At the end of the day, if I’m happy because I’m doing a certain activity, then I will continue to do that activity. Runners are a rare breed, especially Ultra runners. Who in their right mind wants to walk like having just ridden across country on a horse for a week? Our feet are blistered and we lose multiple toenails. We have cursed ourselves at mile 30 or 85, saying we’ll never do this again. But as soon as we cross that Finish Line, we’re already thinking about the next one! We find something while we are out there; it’s hard to explain, but there is definitely some self-validation that goes along with it. This probably sounds a little vain, but I like to say I did something that most people haven’t. It does go deeper than just that, though. There’s something to be said about finishing something you start. You find that you’re a lot stronger than you think you are. This applies to many parts of life, not just running. Certain things that seemed hard before, don’t feel so impossible once completed. You put your head down and keep moving forward no matter what. You come to an obstacle and you adjust, coming up with a solution. You continue to put one foot in front of the other. Life is an endurance race! So, if you’re debating on doing an Ultra race and allowing “research” to be a factor in your choice, turn off your computer and do your own research. I guarantee you will be happy with your findings!

Coping with the NYC Marathon Cancellation – Part II

pated toe pain that had not yet subsided. However, I was extremely proud of Hans for the amount of care and concern that he had for my daughter during the entire training/race experience. In a flash, the gun went off and Wave 2 of the NYC Marathon was off into the cold north wind blowing down on the runners who crossed the Verrazano Narrows Bridge!

By Ray Fattore

There are no words to describe the feeling of running through the borough of Brooklyn and down Fourth Avenue surrounded by thousands of local residents cheering enthusiastically. I couldn’t help but say, “Thank you, New York,” a couple of times as well as, “Thanks for keeping us safe,” to the local NYPD who also were cheering on the runners.

Last year, I wrote an article for the Runner’s Spotlite regarding my experience with the cancellation of the 2012 New York Marathon. Since it was to be my 23-year-old daughter’s and my first marathon, we were disappointed in the events that unfolded. After arriving in NYC shortly after the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, I had no doubt that the marathon should have been cancelled. I was able to successfully finish my first marathon (without my daughter) in Charlotte a few short weeks after the cancelled NYC Marathon. The experience was life-changing; it was a focused, emotional journey in the “now,” ranging from anticipation, surges of adrenaline, physical pain, mental boredom, elation and moments of doubt – as random as the order indicates. When it came time for the 2013 NYC Marathon registration, Amanda and I committed to signing up and focusing our efforts on our training programs – although in separate cities. Last year, her boyfriend Hans relocated to St. Louis in order to be near her. Hans asked if he could run with us, pending a lottery slot in the marathon. With some luck, he was able to get an Maickel Melamed official entry. The good news is that they had each other to train, coax and motivate towards the goal of finishing the marathon. As no plot ever goes as planned, Amanda struggled through the 2013 training due to the hot St. Louis summer, a demanding (and variable) work schedule coupled with a persistent toe injury that couldn’t be remedied by different shoes or trips to the doctor. Despite the struggles, she ran through the pain, alternating her training plan to accommodate periods of recovery.

The first nine miles were encouraging as we kept an even pace and fueled with water/Gatorade as needed. Between miles 9 and 10, I could see the pain in Amanda’s face. When asked, she confirmed that her feet were in a lot of pain but she kept on going. However, I noticed that she frequently looked at her left hand, and I would find out later the reasons why. Miles 10-13 were a blur, as Amanda wrestled with her emotions and physical pain. I was a bit out of sorts myself, not knowing exactly what to do or say. What would I do if she decided to drop out? If she continued to run, would I stay with Amanda despite her desire for me to chase my own PR? I decided that I was not going to leave her behind. Plenty of emotions flowed, as I was conflicted on what role I needed to play for her - a father, friend, running partner? As a father, I wanted her to stop, as it was difficult to watch her struggle with the pain. As both a friend and running partner, I wanted to provide encouragement and support to chase her dream of finishing the NYC Marathon. I decided on the latter. I simply ran with her and spoke very little. When she sped up, so did I. When she slowed down, so did I. Without words, we stayed connected and weathered the ups and downs together. It was a powerful experience for me.

We arrived in NYC two days before the marathon and the experience was in sharp contrast to the one felt the year before. Gone was the devastation of the city and its people caused by Sandy, although it effects are still felt by many. The people of New York were both gracious and energetic in their welcoming of the 46,000+ runners -- not counting family and friends. Despite the tragedy and the setbacks encountered, New Yorkers are tenaciously resilient and remain optimistic about their city and those around them. This was made apparent by the overwhelming turnout at the actual race event.

After we crossed the Queensboro Bridge, I knew that she had a good shot at finishing. I was in awe of her determination as she plowed up and down the hills with not a hint of complaint. At the 20-mile mark, I simply said, “You got this.” I noticed her breathing was slow and rhythmical. Despite the pain, her stride was strong and confident. As we hit Central Park, I saw a glimmer of Amanda’s own awareness that she was going to finish! It was reinforced at mile 24, when she looked over at me, smiled and said, “Looks like we’ll be going to Tiffany’s after all.” (During a rough period in her training, I had promised her that a NYC commemorative charm was hers if she finished.)

Since it was Hans’s first marathon, we all agreed that it was important for him to run his own race and that Amanda and I would stay together due to the antici-

The final 2.2 miles (Hans finished during this time) was more of a celebration, and we both finished the last .2-mile uphill with strength and satisfaction in our

16

stride. We crossed the Finish Line together, holding hands and celebrating the realization of completing one of our dad/daughter dreams together. I originally finished this article at 3 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, as I was unable to sleep after the day’s events. As I learned later during the day on Monday, the final paragraphs were yet to be written. While sitting at LaGuardia waiting for our flights home, Amanda sprung from her to chair to greet a gentleman and two others who had walked by us. As the conversation continued, my curiosity could no longer wait. I went over to introduce myself.

TRUNK SHOW Merrell • Keen • Teva

To my surprise, Amanda introduced me to Maickel Melamed. He is the gentleman from Venezuela who had been featured recently in many news articles for his feat of finishing the Chicago Marathon. Despite being the last to cross the Finish Line, his determination and courage is more than motivational. Maickel was born with a rare condition significantly limiting his muscular strength, which makes it very difficult for him to walk. Amanda hugged him and said that he was one of the reasons she kept running despite her pain early in the race. Unbeknownst to me, she had written on her left hand five reasons why she wanted to finish the NYC Marathon. One of them was to acknowledge and celebrate Maickel’s ability to overcome pain and fatigue. Needless to say, it was a very touching moment and explained her odd hand behavior earlier in the race. I have never been more proud of her as she congratulated Maickel and explained what an inspiration he was to her. The extended exchange was both touching and heartwarming. It reaffirmed my strong feelings that a special group of caring and determined individuals make up our running “village.”

Do You Keep Pace? By Bob Roncker Do you know that the Running Spot has its own Pacing Team? Coordinated by Chris Cavanaugh and Brian Nash, this group helps interested runners maintain a pace compatible with their ability. We are pleased to have offered this opportunity for several years, working with a number of local races. The Running Spot Pacing Team will pace runners during the upcoming Heart Mini Marathon and Flying Pig Marathon, specifically for the longer distances in each event. There is no preregistration or entry fee to be a part of our team. Simply arrive at the starting line and look for the elevated signs indicating the pace that you would like to follow. Once you find your group, get on board and

hitch a ride. Does this work? Most definitely! I’ve been at the finish line of the Flying Pig Marathon and I have witnessed the various pacing groups consistently coming in within seconds of their designated time. If our pacing team can help you attain your goal, we will consider the job well done! Iris Simpson Bush, Executive Director of The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon said, “the Spot On Pace Team has been an excellent addition to our race. The pacers provide an excellent opportunity for our participants to acheive their personal goals. At the finish line, we watch the pace teams arrive and I am always amazed by their accuracy. They are indeed “spot on!”
