Charlotte Dickie graduated from Glenaeon in 2007, after attending Central Coast Steiner School for primary school. Now based in Broome, WA she has used her degree in Communications and Graphic design in working for the Kimberley Land Council, the Northern Land Council and other indigenous organisations in WA and NT.
Here is her reflection on her Glenaeon experience and her career since then:
CHARLOTTE: As I sit and reflect on my Rudolf Steiner Education, I have feelings of appreciation and gratitude for the profound influence it’s had on my life and my place in the world.
My Steiner education nourished me on an emotional and intellectual level, and encouraged me to pursue a career aligned with moral growth and a social conscience, led with a strong sense of creative purpose.
I graduated from the University of Wollongong with a Bachelor of Graphic Design with supplementary units in Aboriginal Studies and Communications. My passion for creativity lies in the form of art, graphic design, photography and a love of the written word.
Throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate years, I worked for a non-for-profit organisation, working alongside Aboriginal youth and young people with disabilities. I was privileged to share their stories, through digital storytelling, with the aim of building capacity and fostering social inclusion and equity.
I have since gone on to forge a career working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Northern Australia, using my creative talents to improve the social and economic outcomes and build the aspirations of our First Nations people in Far North Queensland, the Northern Territory and the Kimberley.
As a child, I was encouraged to discover the world through creativity, and establish a connection to the natural environment, which has enabled me to understand and have an appreciation of natural beauty and an understanding of the interconnected elements of Country and place, significant to our First Nations people.
My role is to design and implement visual compositions to solve problems and communicate ideas through typography, imagery, color and form.
It’s truly the most wonderful gift to use my creative abilities to capture and share elements of the natural world and human society, representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through communications, photography and design.
My work allows me to creatively promote the achievements of Aboriginal people on a national level, document Native Title determinations and trials, design conservation and land management plans and tools, and promote social enterprise ventures.
I absolutely love what I do, and I express deep gratitude for the pathway Steiner provided me, which has enabled my creativity to thrive, and my talents to flourish.
